CHAPTER 42
"Well, looks like you have a lot of groupies on your side. Doesn't it?" Teru handed Keisuke back the file. The blond flipped open the manilla hued folder once again and let his eyes flow across the chat room logs that had cost him Takumi's presence with a flare of inarticulate rage. Tsuchia had said they needed fan acceptance to get to the professional racing circuit. Yet, because of fans, Takumi had been badly injured and kidnaped.
Kurou's certainty that Takumi would be patched up because Lady Kahori had long term plans for his younger lover kept Keisuke going at all. The plans she had for Takumi made Keisuke sick. Hearing the plans outlined by Kurou about Kahori turning them both into porn stars whether they agreed or not was more than Keisuke could take.
Akimoto held a take-out container under Keisuke's nose. "You really need to eat something. If you don't, you'll be too weak to fight soon."
Keisuke pushed the container and Akimoto's arm away as the smell turned his stomach. The blond resumed reading from the folder he had gotten the day before. The wheat haired racer did not want the meal offered to him. Even if it was usually one of his favorites, without Takumi there was nothing enjoyable about eating. Keisuke had no appetite at all. If anything, the thought of eating made him nauseous.
Tohji sighed heavily. "I know you're too depressed to feel hungry, but Aki's right, Keisuke. You have to eat. It's going on three days since you last ate more than two bites of anything at a time. You've only picked at your meals since you got here. Rescuing Fujiwara-kun's going to require all of your strength and stamina at peak levels."
"Leave me the hell alone! This shit's the reason Takumi's been kidnaped. I'm trying to figure out whether or not that damned cunt's going to try and use Takumi in her sick plans whether or not I'm in the picture. Maybe these logs will give the clues I need to figure that out. So stop interrupting me."
"That's enough, baka." The folder was jerked from his hands. Tohji was looming over him, glaring. The file was handed to Akimoto who stepped out of his reach. "You've done nothing but read and re-read that pile of rubbish since you got your hands on it. I almost regret that Kurou managed to get his briefcase open after Shitamura got all the metal out of his shoulder. Right now, the people that planned this can't use Takumi-kun because he's hurt too badly."
"Give that back, Tohji." Keisuke growled in warning.
"Well, that's certainly not going to happen. Its time for you stop feeling sorry for yourself, Keisuke! You're becoming absolutely useless to Fujiwara-kun! If you love him, then you have to pull yourself together before it's too late to save him from this nightmare." Tohji yelled.
"As soon as Kurou's wound fever breaks, I'll be able to find Takumi! I'll show you how wrong you are about my being useless, Tohji."
Keisuke's rage pushed him up off the couch to stand nose to nose with the black-haired man. His head began to swim even before he was completely standing. Balance was non-existent as his legs quivered. The blond found himself flopping back on the couch with the room tilting and spinning out of control.
"Not very likely, baka! You can't even stay on your feet in this sorry shape." Tohji barked in disgust.
Teru spoke from his seat on the other side of Tohji. "Man, I never thought I'd ever see you such a mess, Keisuke-nī. Then again, I never thought I'd ever see you in love with anyone. Fujiwara must be something else to sink his claws into you so deep. From his picture, I can see that he would bring out your protective side. It isn't like you to get involved with someone that looks kind of weak."
"Teru, Takumi's not effeminate or weak by any stretch of the imagination. Stop making it sound like he's girly, because he isn't. He would clean your clock if he was here listening to you say something that stupid about him. I was the one that chased him, not the other way around. I love him, and that's all there is to it."
"Take it easy, Keisuke. Teru has never met Takumi-kun. Everyone misjudges Takumi-kun badly because he has such a deceptive face, baka. He's also a quiet man which does nothing to improve people's impression of his looks. Even you thought he was weak willed until you tangled with him behind the wheel and in an argument."
"Teru has no idea who your lover is, my friend. It's not like you told him about ignoring your sexy little teammate for the better part of a year and failing miserably every time. He doesn't know about you being a complete basket case when you realized you were in love with Fujiwara-kun. Sure, he's a real mellow guy. But, Teru doesn't know that because all he has to go on is a picture."
Teru shook his head. "If I wasn't seeing you falling apart with my own eyes, I'd never believe it. That's all I meant by saying Fujiwara dug his claws in deep. I wasn't trying to say he's girly, just that I could see you getting protective of him. You really gotta eat even if you don't feel like it, Keisuke-nī. Aki's right about you needing to keep your strength up."
"You might want to give Keisuke-san a ramen cup instead of regular food right now." Shitamura was poking his head through the doorway to Tohji and Akimoto's bedroom. "Anything heavier than that might make him vomit since you were yelling at him for not eating. His blood sugar is probably really unstable. That may be the reason he can't stand up without falling over. Once their blood sugar gets unstable, people tend to get dizzy if they stand too fast."
Keisuke resented that the shifty dealer nursing Kurou back to health was still in the apartment with Tohji and Akimoto's blessing. Learning that Shitamura had bribed members of the Red Suns to act as his spies made him even angrier at the other man. This was not his call to make or he would have kicked the scrawny bastard out of Tohji and Akimoto's home without a second thought.
Akimoto turned to face the other man. "You sure about that, Shitamura? Ramen's not going to get Keisuke's strength back up very fast. He's not in as bad a shape as Kurou. Shouldn't we be getting him to eat more meat and such?"
The smaller man stepped out of the bedroom and closed the door behind him after saying something to Kurou. Shitamura stepped closer, nodding as he looked at the brawny fighter. "I'm sure. His stomach will have trouble handling anything more than that for the first twenty-four hours. People that don't eat anything solid for a few days usually vomit up solid food until their stomachs settle. Make the ramen like normal, then drain the broth off. Give him part of the broth first. If Keisuke-san keeps that down for an hour or two, give him the softened noodles to eat afterwards."
"You know a lot about patching people up, Shitamura. Where did you learn so much?" Tohji asked as he faced the other man.
"My okāsan used to be a nurse. Before the fire, she told me and otosān about cases that came into the emergency room where she worked. I guess I picked it up from her. Listening to her talk about different procedures over meals sank in before I knew it."
"That's illegal. My okāsan's a nurse too, and she never discusses any client's medical problems with anyone outside of the clinic." Keisuke grumbled from his place on the couch.
"My okāsan never mentioned names, or specific things about patients. She simply talked about types of injuries and illnesses that were treated during her shift. She told us about different treatments so she could unwind." Shitamura replied.
"How's your buddy doing, Shitamura?" Akimoto asked as he handed the take-out container to the other man.
"The yelling woke Kurou-sama up. I told him I'd check and make sure Ideguchi's private goons hadn't gotten in." Shitamura took the meal box Akimoto was offering and smiled. "Arigato for the food. I was thinking about running to the corner store to get some more broth cubes for Kurou-sama and something to eat. How much do I owe you?"
Akimoto waved him off. "I'll grab more cubes since I'm going out again. Looks like I have to buy some ramen for Keisuke at any rate. Might as well do both at the same time. Gomen that him and Tohji got too noisy. Tell Kurou there's nothing to worry about. He's safe here."
Shitamura nodded and ducked back into the bedroom with his patient. Keisuke frowned after the man's retreating back. Once the door closed, he spoke in a soft voice that would not travel. "I don't like it that those two are staying here. We can't trust them, Tohji. All the chat logs I've read are from several months ago. Kurou's known that this was going to happen for some time."
"Don't start bitching about that again. I've heard more than enough of that particular complaint. Kurou told us his reasons for not warning you and Takumi while Shitamura dug that lead and piece of seat spring out of his shoulder, Keisuke. He had no reason to believe things would go so sour. Kurou believed they would prevent Takumi from being attacked because he never did anything to deserve it. As for you, well, I don't agree with Kurou's cavalier attitude that you've done enough to deserve whatever was planned for you."
"I don't care about their plans for me, Tohji! Those two knew Takumi was going to be attacked, and they didn't do enough to prevent it!" Keisuke's fury was so pronounced he could not stop his limbs from shaking.
"By the time Kurou, his boss, or Shitamura knew they couldn't stop the attack on Takumi, it was too late to warn you! Kurou-san had no idea his boss would be killed by his own subordinates so they could do things their way! Let it go already!" Tohji stood over him with a hand on his hip as he delivered the equally heated lecture.
Had Keisuke felt better, he would have fought back. With the room spinning, Keisuke was not feeling up to the task of arguing for long. The light headedness continued, making Keisuke's stomach rebel.
"Baby's got a point. Kurou's here to help us find your sweetheart. That's all that should matter to you, my friend. Even if he works for scum, he's at least trying to do the right thing by Fujiwara-kun. Shitamura is too. Cut them both some slack, Keisuke. You know better than anyone that it's possible to change your ways when you want to."
"I thought you were going to the corner market, Akimoto."
Keisuke did not want to give the benefit of the doubt. He was livid over having lost Takumi in such a disgraceful manner. Many of his changes were because of the man he loved. Without his spouse, Keisuke no longer cared whether or not he even existed. Sleep was the only relief he got from the hellish pain of knowing Takumi was badly injured and missing. At least in his dreams, he was still close to Takumi.
"You going to eat the ramen when I go get it? If Shitamura's right, it'll make you feel better. You have to pull yourself together, my friend. If you can't find the strength in yourself to survive a temporary setback, Fujiwara-kun's got no chance of getting free. Then again, maybe you're pissed off that you lost your property. Maybe your pride's smarting so much you don't really intend on taking Fujiwara-kun away from those bastards because of the things you found out from Kurou. I'd really hate to see such a sexy man getting the shaft like that."
Teru growled. "That's going too far, Aki-nī. How the hell could you?"
"If Tohji was in Fujiwara's place, I'd be doing everything I had to so I improved my chances of getting him back. Even if I wasn't hungry, I'd eat to make sure I had enough strength to fight my way through anyone that was keeping Tohji away from me. Getting Tohji back would be the only thing that mattered to me. If Keisuke's going to keep sulking because his pride got hit so hard, instead of putting Takumi-kun's safety first, then he doesn't love Fujiwara as much as he'd like us to believe, Teru."
"That's still a damned harsh thing to say just because Keisuke's not acting normal right now. Saying something like that's damned low for anyone, Aki."
"I'm not sulking over injured pride! Pride's got nothing to do with this. Missing Takumi killed my appetite because I can't handle knowing that he's badly hurt, and there's nothing I can for him. Damn, you're all so fucking annoying!" Keisuke snapped as Akimoto's words dug beneath his skin.
"You know Aki says rather vicious things when he's annoyed. But, he's also bringing up an interesting point. You have always been notoriously cold when it comes to your pride, Keisuke. For the moment, Fujiwara's safe enough because of his injuries. However, that won't last more than a couple weeks because he heals so fast. If Fujiwara gets raped before we find him, is that going to change your feelings for him?"
"Nothing can make me stop loving Takumi, Tohji. I tried everything possible to stop loving him for the better part of a year before I accepted the truth. I know I used to be damned cold-blooded. But, I'm not the same person anymore. Having Takumi's love changed everything. Losing Takumi isn't an option. I'd rather die than never be able to see him again."
"Don't do that. We'll have to answer to Fujiwara-kun after we get him back if anything happens to you. After hearing how dangerous he is, I'd rather make you mad, Keisuke-nī." Teru's quip made Keisuke even more depressed.
Keisuke huffed as he closed his eyes. An image of Takumi's sleeping face formed in his mind's eye. The peaceful innocence of his beloved's sleeping expression haunted Keisuke now that he was missing. Without intention, Keisuke had started to pray.
'Kami-sama, I miss Takumi so much. If you really do exist, protect him for me, onegai? Let me get Takumi back soon. It's been eight days already. Let Kurou be right that Takumi's more valuable to these drug dealers alive. Make sure Takumi's been stitched up and getting the care he needs for his injuries. Onegai, Kami-sama?'

Itsuke stared at the crazy mask wearing onna that had put him in chains. Her voice was icy as she demanded confirmation yet again. "Are you certain?"
"Hai. That's everything Tak ever said about jewelry. He said the necklace Keisuke-san gave him is an engagement ring, . . . well, sort of. The rings and other stuff were supposed to be given to him and Keisuke-san around New Years. He invited me to the ceremony."
Sweat was trickling down his face and neck as Itsuke answered. Kahori wanted to know about Keisuke-san's family legacy. Itsuke could only tell her things he'd been told, which was next to nothing.
Kahori tapped a black lacquered fan on the table top as she watched him. Terrified that she would decide he was lying, or withholding information writhed along Itsuke's spine. He had seen her order people brutally killed since he arrived. Her triumphant tone as she condemned Arai's teenaged onēchan to death because of his failures kept Itsuke awake at night.
Worse, Itsuke discovered, Kahori had captured two other Project D members. Matsimoto and Fumihiro were brought to her torture chamber to watch beside him and Tak. The mask wearing onna must have thought to intimidate them, making them watch while the young onna cried and screamed as she was tortured to death. Instead of terror, Kahori succeeded in pushing Tak into one of his very rare fits of blind rage. Itsuke had always known that Tak was never someone to underestimate once he clicked over. Yet, Kahori had underestimated Tak very badly when she included him in her sickening scheme.
Somehow, despite being half dead, Tak got off the small stretcher he was brought in on. Tak fought off one of the two men hurting the terrified teenager even though his wounds ripped open. Itsuke could still see Tak's fist slamming into the first psychotic brute's face whenever his eyes closed. The blow had knocked out the psycho before he could retaliate. Tak was beaten down by the four other guards in the room. It had taken all of them to bring him down before he could get to the mask wearing lunatic or her twisted buddy, Gouhara. While Tak was unconscious, Arai and his onēchan were both butchered in front of the rest of them.
". . . know about the Legacy, the ring and necklace are only given to inheritors as a complete set. They get the set after they give vows to protect the Legacy's true meaning. Keisuke's family is obsessed that the jewelry only be passed to the next generation in front of witnesses. I find it hard to believe Sobo Ogino would give Keisuke-san the necklaces before the vow's have been given, Kahori-sama. I've seen the Legacy, and was told all about it by Keisuke-san. He can't be right." Mitani was speaking again.
Mitani was unbelievably gorgeous. Raven black hair flowed down her back and framed a delicate porcelain skinned face and perfect figure. Not even the small blemishes on her skin detracted from her perfection whenever Itsuke's eyes landed on her. There was something regal about her bearing even though she was as much a slave as himself.
"Then, where's the ring you're so adamant that shonen's supposed to be wearing? Arai and the others swore they never saw any ring on that shonen's hand. None of them had the ring when we searched their bodies, and possessions. Because you told me Takahashi will kill to retrieve the necklace and ring, I brought the group in for questioning. That only leaves Ideguchi taking it, . . . unless you, . . . or this shonen's lying to me."
Itsuke found himself babbling. "I'm not lying. Tak said the necklace was an engagement present. If you don't believe me, go ask Tak about the necklace. He'll tell you the same thing. I don't know where Mitani-san learned about the Takahashi family jewelry, but I know Tak and Keisuke-san got the necklaces early."
Mitani grumbled. "I know because I spent several months with Keisuke-san three years ago. I know his family. If Ideguchi has the ring, it's going to make it much harder for you to force Keisuke to obey you once he shows up looking for his lover."
From the things Itsuke had learned about Mitani, now that he was in the same cell as Tak, she had once been Kahori-sama's favorite. She had fallen out of favor when she failed to complete a mission to kill Keisuke-san. It seemed Kahori was obsessed with Keisuke-san from the things he had overheard.
"Perhaps you should pray that the necklace is enough incentive to make Takahashi behave then, Akiho. I will not tolerate failure from you." Kahori's tone was even icier as she kept her voice soft. A blizzard would have been as welcome as any tropical heat wave Itsuke thought as he shivered.
Tung Tzu entered, and bowed low to his mistress. "Nani, Tung Tzu?"
"Fujiwara's awake again and demanding more water, Kahori-sama. Should I give him another dose?"
"The tincture's rather potent. I want to control his body, not kill him by giving him an overdose. It wouldn't hurt to put him to back to sleep. Do that instead. Have there been any messages from Gouhara, or Ideguchi this afternoon?"
"Not yet, Kahori-sama. There's still no word about Crow's location from any of your allies." The silk clad Chinaman answered in a blank voice.
Kahori's fan rapped the table hard as her voice gained in volume. "I want Kurou's location found, Tung Tzu. Call Gouhara again and find out where Shimoda's guard dog has gotten off too. Do not come back without that information."
"As you wish, Kahori-sama." Tung Tzu bowed, and left the room with a brisk stride.
The beefy thug standing beside Itsuke started to speak. "Kahori-sama, do you think Gouhara had Shimoda-sama killed to consolidate his power?"
"I doubt Gouhara's behind these murders. Kumagai-sama was very fond of Shimoda-sama's family and Gouhara knows that. Gouhara was ordered to work with Shimoda by Kumagai. Shimoda's wife, daughter, and grandchildren were killed that night. Gouhara knew better than most that Shimoda-sama was the only one capable of controlling Kurou. If . . . he decides Gouhara and I are behind the murders, Kurou will certainly come after us." The irate onna threw her fan against the silk screened partition to vent her anger. "We have got to find Kurou, and whoever killed Shimoda-sama!"
Mitani watched the mask wearing onna with a guarded expression. "Kahori-sama?"
"Not now, Akiho. Finding Kurou and Shimoda-sama's murderers is more important than Takahashi for now. He won't be able to find his lover that quickly."
"Kahori-sama, could Ideguchi be the one that hired the Shimoda-family assassins? I've heard that he's a sadist that loves to do that kind of thing." Itsuke shuddered as he heard the black-haired onna willfully disobey the livid slaver. He was beginning to think Mitani Akiho had a death wish.
"Hm." Kahori turned her head toward the nude beauty. "That's entirely possible. Ideguchi's hot headed, arrogant and had several well-known disputes with Shimoda-sama about Takahashi, and Quai-Tou. Now that I think about it, Ideguchi stands to gain much more than the rest of us with Shimoda-sama dead. Gouhara's the only Syndicate power left capable of hindering Ideguchi's actions. Which means . . ." The onna's voice trickled away.
Itsuke stood where he was, not daring to move. The insane onna's attention was diverted from him which was all Itsuke cared about. He wanted to slink back to his cell and be forgotten by the sadistic bitch in front of him as soon as possible.
"Perhaps I should send a messenger to Lord Kumagai mentioning the possibility that Ideguchi's behind the murders. That keeps us in the Yakuza's good graces. The only problem is that Ideguchi knows about my plans for Takahashi and Fujiwara. It might be wiser to get rid of all the major liabilities I have right now."
Itsuke wondered if he was on the liabilities list she was talking about as he swallowed hard. His jailor asked, "Are you done with this shonen, Kahori-sama?"
Kahori's head turned toward them. Itsuke wished he could vanish into the floor boards as the onna focused on him and his jailor. "Take him back to his cell. The same for you, Akiho. I need to consider my options."
Without a word the black-haired onna stood and walked toward the hidden stairs without a backward glance. This onna walked as if she was dressed like a queen. Her looks had not escaped Itsuke's notice any more than her vicious tongue. Itsuke followed her, trying hard to ignore the onna's nude derriere. He'd been stripped of his clothes recently. Hating the feeling of being stared at, Itsuke kept his hands over himself. Making certain he kept his eyes away from anything enticing about the onna in front of him was difficult.
Itsuke almost slammed into Mitani's back as she came to an abrupt stop. The well cared for little shonen with lighter than normal hair and dark blue eyes stopped a few steps away. He had a tiny tray containing pencils and paper in his small hands. "Hikaru, Kahori-sama is in a very bad mood. She said she needed time to think about some things. Be on your best behavior today so she won't be cross with you. If you get lucky enough, perhaps she'll send you away without your lessons."
"Domo, haha. I'll try to make Kahori-sama feel better by working my hardest to do my lessons perfectly if she tells me to begin."
"I'm sure you'll make Kahori-sama very happy, Hikaru. She's usually quite pleased with you." Akiho sounded very proud of the little boy as she spoke.
As the youngster walked toward the opulent room they had left, Itsuke found himself staring after him. 'Mitani's that little boy's okasān? Dark blue eyes are rare. Come to think of it, Keisuke-san's hair is lighter than most people's, and he has blue eyes too. Mitani knows an awful lot about Keisuke-san. When she said she knew him for a few months, did she mean like that? Kami-sama, is that little kid . . . ? Don't go there, baka!'
Where the thought came from, Itsuke was not certain. However, once it set into his head, it would not go away as he went into the cell he was sharing with Tak. A sudden churning in Itsuke's gut almost made him retch. He said nothing as the jailor put the handcuffs back on him. Tak was awake still. Badly hurt as he was, Kahori had ordered that he be chained hand and foot at all times. Their jailor snapped the wrist cuffs on him and left the cell. The metal barred door closed behind the goon with a loud clinking noise.
"Nani happened, Itsuke?" Tak's voice was soft.
"The head honcho wants to know where the ring to your set is. Somehow, Mitani-san knows a whole lot about Keisuke-san, Tak. She had orders to kill Keisuke-san, but failed."
"Nani? Are you sure, Itsuke?" Tak sat up wincing as his re-sewn gashes were strained.
"Hai." The image of the small boy running around upstairs was plaguing Itsuke. He felt he had to say something about it to Tak, but doing so would hurt his best friend. He had no proof that the little boy was connected to Keisuke-san, only a very uncomfortable feeling.
"I know a little bit about who she is. I now she shot Keisuke in the shoulder a few years ago. She was under orders of some kind from Kahori. Tell me your impressions of Mitani-san." Itsuke was startled by Tak's request.
"Um, well she's really gorgeous, but kind of suicidal if you ask me. You'd think she was a queen or something by the way she acts. Mitani-san flaunts her body, and is always naked. She's really rude too."
"I doubt she has any choice about being naked. We're in the same situation, Itsuke." Tak's voice sounded like he was falling asleep again. Kahori had ordered him knocked out again, so Itsuke knew he would not long be able to say anything to his best friend.
"Tak, there's a little kid upstairs that gives me a bad feeling. He's Mitani's shonen. He looks like he might be as old as five years."
"Five? I feel very sorry for . . . Mitani-san if she has a little kid to protect. . . . From the way Kahori seems to run things . . . it's no wonder Akiho tried to kill . . . Keisuke, even if she didn't want to. I wonder . . . how Keisuke will handle it . . . when he finds out about her little shonen. . . . Maybe he can stop . . . hating her so much . . . because Akiho was desperate to protect her child." Takumi's voice was softer and more airy.
"Tak, the shonen has dark blue eyes and light-colored hair. I mean, I'm not sure, it's just a feeling, . . ." He heard a very small snore from Tak's part of the cell. Itsuke rubbed his head and sighed. Maybe it was better if Tak had no idea that he thought the youngster upstairs was Keisuke-san's.
