CHAPTER 44
"Go help Fujiwara and Fumihiro! They stuffed them in a van. They just left a couple minutes ago." Hiroshi's pain wracked words harried Keisuke morning, noon, and night. Failure gnawed at Keisuke's mind. He had arrogantly told Oyaji-san that he would get as ruthless as necessary to protect Takumi when he faced his angry in-law. Now, his arrogant words had come back to flog him with a vicious soul shredding sting as he missed Takumi with everything in his heart.
Losing Takumi had somehow striped his existence of meaning. Every ounce of energy Keisuke could muster focused on getting Takumi back. Keisuke had lost the center of his world. Three weeks had passed since they had taken Takumi from him. Keisuke had disintegrated into a state of subdued panic. The worst nightmare began when he read Kahori's proposal. He had to find Takumi before they Syndicate did something unimaginable to his beloved spouse in retaliation.
A roller coaster of listlessness, emptiness, depression, fear, and furious emotions controlled Keisuke by turns. Fear and fury warred for control most of the time. Sleep was not an option unless Keisuke dropped from exhaustion as the days ground on. Eating was something done with mechanical precision whenever Shinsei, Teru, Tohji, or Akimoto handed him something. He shoved it into his mouth, tasting nothing at all. Keisuke's mind remained fixated on where they had taken the love of his life.
Hiroshi, Kashiwazaki, Nakajo, and Sagina told the kēsatsu Arai Umito was involved in the abduction. His home was the first place they searched for clues. A grisly surprise had been waiting for the kēsatsu. Several envelopes with her ripped off finger nails, and several finger joints with detailed orders proved Arai was also a victim.
Several cases began overlapping and unfolding like dominoes falling into an ever expanding design. Arai's nightmare had started one month after Mogi had shot them both. Inside one day, the number of missing people with ties to Project D was upgraded from three, to five.
Corpses of Arai and a badly disfigured girl were found washed up on the coastline at the end of the second week. The authorities broadcast the information on the nightly news. Detective Sugano informed the entire team that their families were targets and ordered that they go to America.
Ignoring his family's pleas, Keisuke refused to join them. His ryōshin argued that he should still race, even if Takumi was dead. Even Ryosuke had given him a similar argument. Enraged by their attitudes, Keisuke told them he would not quit searching until Takumi's body was found. If he left Japan, Keisuke would never see Takumi alive again.
The blond used public phones when he checked in with the kēsatsu. His gang had found a few clues which he passed along to help the authorities find Takumi faster. Detective Sugano made an agreement with him that if Keisuke gave them such valuable leads, the kēsatsu would allow him to remain at large.
Everything came together once Kurou delivered the file. The blond contacted Detective Sugano and explained about the ghost web site and everything learned from Shitamura and Kurou. Rules of kēsatsu investigation constrained the detective's actions on several levels Sugano told him during the conversation. Those rules limited how, or when the authorities could respond to anything he had uncovered. The authorities could not produce quick results to insure Takumi's safety Keisuke concluded as he slammed down the receiver. It would take the kēsatsu much too long to save Takumi, Fumihiro, Matsimoto, and Takeuchi. Finally, Keisuke was getting closer to the answers.
"There's something far more disturbing to Kahori's agenda than she's been talking about. That old hag is obsessed with you personally, Takahashi. I have my doubts about Fujiwara only being abducted to insure the Syndicate gets paid off. It's ultimately about getting her hands on you, and controlling you any way she can."
"Naze do you think that?" Keisuke stared at the injured enforcer sitting on Tohji's couch.
"Kahori paid someone to remove Mitani from the hospital. As if that was not odd enough, the rumors we heard shortly after that claimed that Mitani was pregnant and required constant care after Kahori abducted her. Normally, she would have killed Mitani before she could turn Kahori in. Mitani also returned to Kahori a very different person, or so I've heard. It isn't like Kahori to raise an infant, yet that has obviously happened. We do know Kahori's been plotting ways to control you ever since she got Mitani Akiho back, Takahashi. Shimoda-sama thought it might concern your popularity with the onnas. With you as one of the studs in her stable, Kahori stands to make a profit."
Akimoto scoffed, "Akiho's a two-bit whore who can't have kids. Keisuke has never been stupid enough to knock someone up. He always used solid protection with all his girlfriends to prevent that from happening. Besides, Akiho needed surgery because her guts were screwed up. There's no way Keisuke's got a musuko, especially by that flaky bitch!"
"Shimoda-sama had doubts, but, without a positive identification on the child, who knows whether Kahori was telling the truth, or not? It's a fact that Kahori was parading a small child around claiming he's Takahashi's when she gave us the folders that night. She also had Mitani with her at the meeting. Mitani stopped fighting her handlers when Kahori threatened the shonen she had in her lap. Kahori claimed she would use that very young shonen, Mitani, and a drug to control Takahashi." Kurou's emotionless reply shook Keisuke. His or not, the thought that a very young child would be a hostage made him ill.
Otosān had warned them that there was very little chance of Akiho carrying a pregnancy to term because of damage to her uterus. It was not a problem with getting pregnant, only of carrying the child to term. The complications she would face made it a life threatening situation best avoided. With miscarriages being a ninety percent certainty even if her pills failed, Keisuke had been relieved of any worries by the diagnosis. However, there was a possibility his otosān and the specialist had been wrong.
The surgery advised was supposed to put Akiho's uterus back into place. Without the surgery, Akiho would always suffer as the last ligament that held her womb was greatly strained by her cramps every month. That was what they had told them. Because of the medical prognosis, it was inconceivable that Akiho had actually given birth. Yet, with a ten percent chance she could get pregnant and carry to term being the other side of the diagnosis, an unimaginable possibility faced Keisuke.
Keisuke frowned. "As far as I know, Akiho's uterus was too messed up to carry to term. Otosān's medical staff said she needed to have it put into some kind of cradle. Her other option was having it removed. Of course that would have messed up her hormone levels so was the less desirable option. As messed up as the gynecologist and otosān said she was, I don't see how Akiho could have given birth. I never heard she was pregnant either."
"Shimoda-sama was investigating Kahori's claim when he died. Whether or not he got answers to the child's lineage is unknown to me. Once we get to Tokyo, I'll double check with his connections to see if they found anything out. The shonen could be a fake. However, he has blue eyes. Minasan knows that's a rare bloodline trait. His lighter hair color could be a dye job, but eyes can't be faked that easily."
Keisuke felt his own eyes widen as his gut twisted. It was not possible. His ryōshin had dealt with the trial while he was in the hospital. Enough witnesses had been present that the courts had not called on him to testify. The trial had progressed rapidly due to the nature of the offense. 'Kasān had told Keisuke that a psychiatrist examined Akiho and judged her mentally unstable. He knew a judge sent Akiho to a secure mental hospital where she would hopefully get well. That had been her sentence for trying to kill him. If Akiho had been pregnant, they should have told him. His ryōshin went to court in his place, and were the only ones who knew the truth.
"Without medical care there's no chance of her surviving, dear. Our court appointment is meaningless now." Keisuke stopped as he heard his otosān's soft, yet firm words. He was standing in the hallway wondering at the sad tone he heard. Who was going to die?
"Oh! I can't believe her! Akiho's jeopardizing everything! Nani is she thinking? Does she want to die that badly?" Okasān's voice shocked him. Her rage was real.
Keisuke had no idea what Akiho had done, but knowing her, it had to be bad. As if the thought had conjured it, his shoulder twinged. The blond rubbed the newly healed appendage with a frown. He had gotten out of the brace a few days before. It was still stiff from inactivity.
"She's desperate, Yukiko. Insane or not, Akiho's acting like any normal onna by finding a way to escape in this instance. Most onnas would respond the same way to receiving the court order. We should have expected her escape from the medical facility. Although, it's a tragic loss, it can't be helped."
"If there's any consolation to be found, it's that Keisuke won't have to suffer. I won't have him hurt any worse by that little tramp. She can't possibly survive without medical aid, and he won't have to be told about this mess she caused."
"Nani do we tell Keisuke then?"
"We only tell him that Akiho has escaped. I doubt he can handle the rest right now. He's only been home four days. We agreed that if everything went well, we would tell him everything. You agreed to that condition since getting our hopes up was a bad idea from the beginning. Since Akiho has done this, there's no point. It can only make our musuko even more bitter if he finds out this way."
"Yukiko, although I can't argue with the court's judgement on how he lives his life, Keisuke still deserves to know. He should have known from the start."
"Naze? You said it yourself. Akiho has no chance of surviving now that she's escaped the hospital. Keisuke doesn't need to know about the court order, or anything else. He wasn't ready for this burden to begin with, Ryuunosuke. Maybe our baka musuko will finally begin to get his life together, and clean up his act if he's unaware of this. The last thing he needs is to go out looking for that tramp, and you know it."
Keisuke snapped out of his reverie. "I need to make a long distance phone call. I have to talk to my ryōshin about Akiho's trial. They should have the answers we need."
Akimoto nodded. "I'm sure it's got to be a load of bull shit, my friend. It's a damned low blow though."
"I can't be sure. Right after I got out of the hospital, I overheard my ryōshin talking when they thought I wasn't around. They admitted that Akiho had escaped from the hospital when I confronted them on their weird conversation. They said that she was very ill, but wouldn't say anything else. Having children held a very strong probability of killing Akiho. I remember Okasān snarling that her escape was a suicidal move. Otosān said some court order made her react like any other onna in the same spot would."
Tohji grumbled. "If this shonen was yours, you would have to know about him long ago. The judge would have given you custody since Akiho was written off as insane. That means the judge would have given you the child if there was one."
"Considering Takahashi's involvement with gangs, a judge would not have awarded him custody of an infant anymore so than Mitani. They would see both as unfit because of their lifestyles." Kurou pointed out.
Shocked speechless, Keisuke could only sit in his chair and replay the memory in his mind. His ryōshin had looked very guilty when he walked into the living room asking about their conversation. It had seemed odd back then. Now, it seemed downright sinister. They told him that Akiho had escaped from the hospital. They had given him the impression that her mental illness was bad enough to kill her. In his heart, Keisuke had known they were hiding something. At the time stress had exhausted him too much to care. While Akiho remained out of his life, Keisuke was content to forget all of his blunders.
Keisuke clenched his fists. A blunder was an understatement if Akiho had been pregnant. As much as he hated to admit it, Kurou made a valid point. His lifestyle was unquestionably unfit for raising children by society's standards. Would the authorities inform him about the pregnancy considering he was not married Akiho before they sentenced her? His life had consisted of almost daily violence when they split up. Being a swinger made him even more undesirable to the masses. And yet, he was also from a wealthy family with the influence and power to get custody any time they wanted it.
If he had a musuko, then the shonen affected his relationship with Takumi. Although he had no idea whether or not it was true, that thought sent a chill racing down Keisuke's spine. Ignorance was no excuse to give his spouse. After being abused, and abandoned so often, this development would appall Takumi. Worse, in Takumi's eyes, he would feel he had been lying all this time. How would he face Takumi when having a child would hurt the man he loved, so profoundly?
A child's existence caused problems no matter how he looked at the situation. Ignoring his responsibility would certainly infuriate Takumi. Taking responsibility would mean he could not be with Takumi. He would also have to raise a musuko he had not known existed. One thing was certain, if he had a child, Keisuke knew he had to take responsibility financially at the very least. Like it or not, Keisuke had to get the youngster out of this Kahori's hands unharmed, whether or not the shonen was his. The rest would have to wait.
Keisuke realized he needed to contact his ryōshin for answers. Had they hidden something this important because they decided he could not handle the responsibility? Okasān was definitely capable of such an underhanded betrayal. Keisuke felt he had every right to be furious if that was the case. He recalled her saying he would hunt Akiho down if he found out. Okasān would have been correct about that. Keisuke knew he would have hunted her down and taken any child of his away before she could damage it.
"Tohji, can I borrow your phone to make a long distance call? The sooner I get answers, the faster we'll come up with a plan."
"Sure. Use the one in the bedroom if you like."
Keisuke got up and stalked into the other room, slamming the door behind him. Taking a deep breath to brace himself, he jerked the paper out of his wallet with the contact number on it and dialed. Six rings later someone answered the phone. "Hello?"
The accent was strange so it took a second to process the greeting. Recalling that he needed to speak in English, Keisuke responded. "Hello, is this the Singing Wolf residence?"
"Sure is. This is Twylah. What can I do for you?"
He got the gist of her reply fast enough. "I'm hoping that Takahashi Yukiko, or Ryuunosuke is available. Is either one of them there? This is their son, Keisuke."
Her voice slowed measurably. "Well hello there. Both of 'em is sitting at the dinner table. I'll go get 'em right quick." He heard a thumping sound and wondered if the onna had put the phone down. Although he still had difficulty with the dialect, he was certain the onna said they were in the house, sitting at a table. 'Em seemed to mean them if he had understood correctly. How the onna would pass on the message to his ryōshin was uncertain. Perhaps Sammy was also there so could translate for her.
As Keisuke began to wonder whether anyone would pick up a familiar voice spoke. "Moshi moshi."
"Okasān?" Relief and irritation blazed up within his mind.
"Where are you? Are you all right, musuko?" Excitement and relief laced her statically, crackling voice.
"I'm fine. Look. I really need you to tell me something. It's very important that you tell me the truth too." Keisuke glared at the headboard as he spoke with force into the receiver. His anger was getting hotter the longer he thought about that conversation he had overheard.
"Nani, musuko?" Pops and buzzes echoed along the line from her end.
"Was Akiho pregnant when they put her into the mental hospital?"
"Na, . . . naze are you asking me something like that out of the blue?" The alarm in his okasān's voice solidified his certainty.
"Someone that's been helping me find Takumi got information that Akiho, and a child that is supposed to be mine are with Takumi. The drug syndicate I stopped from taking over Akagi when I was a gangster is behind minasan's abductions. I need to know if there's any possibility this information's valid. I have to know the truth!"
He heard a feint sob on the other end of the line. Muffled voices that he could not understand followed. Keisuke unleashed a tsk of exasperation, and snarled in a chest deep tone. "Okasān?"
"Keisuke?" It was otosān this time.
"Naze won't okasān answer me?"
"Nani? Okasān burst into tears, musuko. Has Takumi-kun died?"
"iie, we found out he's alive. I asked Okasān if Akiho was pregnant when they sentenced her to do her jail term in the hospital? From Okasān's reaction I have a bad feeling she was, and you both knew about it!" Keisuke did not bother hiding his anger as he snarled into the receiver.
"Oh. Uhm, hai, musuko. When the judge sentenced Akiho, they gave Okasān and me full custody of the child even before it was born. With the complications she was having, it didn't look like she would give birth, musuko. We were not confident the child would be born. We decided to wait until we knew the little one would survive before saying anything. How did you find out about that?" His voice was calm and steady.
"To hell with that answer! I had a fucking right to know about this long before now, otosān!"
"Akiho escaped from the hospital. Without medical care there was no possibility of her carrying the child long enough for a live birth, Keisuke. We had no reason to doubt her attending physician's experience."
"He was wrong, Otosān. To be blunt, the bastards that kidnaped Takumi, Fumihiro, and Matsimoto also claim to have Akiho and, . . . my musuko." With those snarled words Keisuke felt his world crumbling. He forced the rest out through clenched teeth. "This drug syndicate has them all as hostages. They've made very certain I know they will use the shonen they claim is mine to force me to cooperate, otosān. I didn't believe he was mine so I called you. They've had him and Akiho for a while. From everything we've found out, they took Akiho from the hospital. She didn't escape from it, Otosān."
"I don't understand. Naze would they take Akiho from the mental hospital?"
Keisuke took a deep breath and began trying to encapsulate everything he knew. "The drug syndicate that I kept from taking over Akagi's streets sent her to break up my gang. The leaders thought she'd blow the whistle on them even though they had her younger onēchan as a hostage. They had to get Akiho back to keep her quiet. Instead of killing her because she was valuable to one of them, and pregnant, they paid someone inside the hospital to get Akiho out. They handed Takumi over to the same person that has Akiho, Otosān."
"Have you info, . . . this?" Another strong pop and buzz broke part of his otosān's sentence up. It was not hard to guess the question asked.
"Detective Sugano knows most of it. He even knows about the ghost site online that's targeting Project D fan chats and charging fees for a damned yaoi manga that features me and Takumi. Detective Sugano told me it will be several weeks before he can do anything with the information. This group needs us both to pull off their sick money making scheme."
"Musuko, I know you don't want to hear this, but, . . . I think you should to come to America. Let the kēsatsukan handle this situation. You've done more than enough to satisfy anyone. The authorities have a better chance of saving them all, . . . now that you know about your musuko. Too much is at stake, Keisuke."
"Shut up! The last thing you want is for me to be anywhere near you or Okasān. I'm way too angry to listen to this right now. You hid this for way too long. I'm going to get Takumi, and my, . . . musuko away from these bastards. You make sure the paperwork you were given for his custody is still good." With that furious parting shot, Keisuke slammed down the receiver.
Enraged did not begin to cover Keisuke's feelings. For three years he had been blissfully unaware. Now, everything he held dear was falling apart. A bitter snort made it to the surface. He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose.
