Chapter 46
‘blackmail’
The day was going to be a beautiful one, autumn sky fine and blue as a robin’s eggshell. Leaves, more of them scarlet and gold every morning these days, rustled and whispered in a morning breeze. Early sunshine brought a kiss of warmth to the earth. The day began, in fact, looking every bit as perfect as the day a young girl was kidnapped in the mountains and sold into slavery.
Just as on that day, she and everyone closest to her greeted it with unsuspecting cheer. Li watched the sun rise from his post on the wall, nourishing the memories of last night and allowing himself a little smile. Much later on Sakura opened her eyes, thrillingly naked beneath her covers, and squirmed with delight.
Ralen had been awake for several hours, making his own plans.
And Yue awoke to the familiar warmth of his slave nestled against his side, chin level with his shoulder. He was still asleep, black hair a scruffy mess, the light prickle of stubble on his jaw barely visible in the morning light. Yue thought it was the most beautiful face in the world, the only thing worth waking up to. Cautiously, trying not to disturb the mattress, he readjusted his position to face Touya directly, his lips just a breath away from a kiss. He didn’t need one, though, not just yet. For now, it was enough to simply lie here and feel his light exhalations. For several minutes Yue did this, until Touya’s lips twitched in a reluctant smile.
“Stop it.”
“Stop what? I’ve done nothing to you, slave.”
“I can feel you staring at me,” Touya muttered, without opening his eyes. “It woke me up. So stop it.”
“No. You belong to me and I will stare at you whenever I wish. But now that you’re awake, I think I want even more.” He drew Touya close to his chest and rolled back over onto his back, helping himself to a luxurious and long-lasting kiss. His slave responded with enthusiasm, but when Yue’s lips started to roam lower, he mumbled a half-hearted protest.
“Is this okay? Shouldn’t you- mmm… be keeping an eye out for the Void?”
“Keroberos is patrolling the canyon,” Yue answered, neatly avoiding the real issue. Touya was unconscious when Keroberos darkly guessed the Void’s future intentions, and couldn’t possibly have heard them talking. He was, however, a smart boy and must have already guessed the danger he’d been put in. As for that so-called ‘solution’ of sending him back to his home village, Yue was not allowing himself to think about it. He would protect Touya, keep him close – ah, yes, just like that! – and keep him safe. It would be fine. In the bright morning sunlight of a such a perfect day, and under the ministrations of his slave’s tongue, Yue let himself forget Clow’s warnings. Touya was his, and he would never lose him.
Higher the sun climbed. Ralen was mysteriously absent that day, appearing neither to take her downstairs for dressing or to her breakfast. Puzzled but pleased, Sakura escorted herself outside to meet with Syaoran and Spirit.
At first it was a bit on the awkward side. Neither could quite look each other in the eye, mumbling their greetings to the grass and blushing pink over what happened between them last night. Sakura turned her attentions on the horse just to ease the tension, stroking her nose and tickling her ears in the way Spirit liked best.
“Hey there, sweet girl. How’s my favorite filly?” She was answered with a friendly nicker.
“She’s outgrown that,” Syaoran corrected, relaxing in the shade. “She’s a mare now.”
“I like filly,” Sakura replied flippantly. “It’s cuter. She likes it too. See how she nudges me when I say it?”
“Unfortunately yes. Two years of training since her birth and all my plans for a fierce combat horse are ruined. Filly,” he snorted. “You really do have the gift.”
“Honestly, Syaoran, I don’t think I do. We’ve been trying all this time and I still haven’t ever been able to communicate a message to you with just my mind.”
“Maybe you just haven’t had a message that’s worth a real try. Maybe when you do, you’ll tap into strength you never knew you had.”
His words intrigued Sakura enough to turn around and finally look at him, distracted enough not to be flustered when she did. “That’s a strange theory.”
“Magic can work in very strange ways. There’s no predicting it.”
“In that case, I don’t suppose it will ever happen. But that’s alright, I’m happy just to be good friends with Spirit. She’s so beautiful.”
Another pleased nicker. Syaoran rolled his eyes. “I guess that’s just as well, because it’s starting to look like you’re the only one she’ll ever let near her other than me. Hey, you want to learn to ride her?”
“Me? Alone?” Sakura gasped. “Do you really think I could?”
“She likes you well enough. Are you ready to sit up there by yourself?”
“Well…” Dubiously Sakura eyed Spirit’s withers, high as her head. “It’s a little scary, way up there. But if you were there to catch me, I’d try. I remember how it felt when she… what was it?”
“Cantered.”
“Right, that. It was a wonderful feeling.” Sakura patted her nose a final time and wandered over to the shade. “Yes, I want to try. I’ll ask Master Yue for permission when I see him next.”
Primly she folded her legs beneath her and spread out her skirt, sitting directly across from Syaoran. The conversation had done wonders to relax them both, and finally they were making direct eye contact. After a short pause, Syaoran nerved himself to discuss It.
“How do you feel?”
“I’m fine!”
“Really? You didn’t look it last night.”
“Yes, really. I was just so surprised, that’s all. It felt strange, but it didn’t hurt.”
Syaoran looked skeptical. “Are you sure?”
“Yes, Syaoran, I am very sure. It made you happy, and because of that I was happy too.” A genuine smile spread across her face, and he managed half of one in response.
“Well, okay. If you say so.”
“Would you like to do it again? Because we can. I’ll do it for you whenever you want.”
Syaoran coughed, somehow managing to look flustered and pleased at the same time. “Not ‘whenever’ I want, I think,” he amended, casting a glance at the castle around them. “But maybe again, sometime. It was really good, Sakura. It made me feel… better.”
She understood his extra meaning. With this, Syaoran could wait indefinitely for the real thing, they’d never have to worry about his physical frustrations again. Now, everything would be fine until he’d freed her.
“Then it was worth it.” Sakura beamed and rolled back up onto her feet, preparing to warm up for dance practice.
After just two minutes of spying, Ralen was bored. He’d half hoped, when peeking out from the doorframe of an overlooking balcony, that he might get treated to a show of unrestrained hot lust. But Sakura seemed more interested in petting the horse than its owner, and when she sat under the trees with him they did nothing more than talk. Eventually she got up again to practice dancing, which was pleasant enough to watch, but Li’s obvious enjoyment of the act was no crime. After an hour of dancing and then more talking – what in the world was fascinating enough to talk about with a girl? – they got up to leave. Ralen was starting to wonder if he’d imagined the whole thing when Li took Sakura’s hand, hastily checking his surroundings, and kissed it. And then, more briefly still, pulled her closer to kiss her on the lips.
It was hardly anything, a mere peck of affection, but it was there. And to Ralen, it was enough.
The beautiful and calm day passed. Sakura had dinner with her brother that night, carefully keeping to innocuous topics like gardening, dancing, and fairy tales. If she let herself think about Syaoran for even a second, after what they’d done together, her brother was sure to notice. And Onii-chan, who was usually bored stiff by such discussions, readily participated in the conversation and asked lots of questions. A more observant girl might have wondered if he was trying to keep certain things off his mind too, but Sakura was not known for keen observation.
“Ne, Onii-chan, I want to ask Master Yue if I can learn to ride a horse. Is that alright?”
“Ride a horse? What do you need to know that for? You don’t have one.”
“But there are lots of horses in the castle stables. Someone would definitely let me practice on theirs.”
“Oh yeah? Who?”
“Uh… Tomoyo would let me practice on her horse when she comes to visit. Or Meilin. I know it. And I think it would be fun!”
“Says the girl who couldn’t stop falling over for a year when she learned to walk.”
“Onii-chan!” Resentfully she poked him in the ribs. “I’ve learned how to be very graceful with all my dancing lessons, you know. I think I could probably learn how to ride a horse very well.”
“Maybe the first time you fall off you’ll change your mind about that. Ah well, I won’t say no. As long as I’m there to catch you.”
Sakura’s smile faltered a bit; hastily she plucked it back up again. “Great! I’m going to ask him, then. I can’t wait.”
“Whatever makes you happy. Little monster.” Affectionately he tousled her hair and grunted when she poked him again, but he didn’t lose his smile. It was really amazing, Sakura reflected, that the two of them could go through so much and endure so many changes, yet still have something between them that would apparently never change.
“Good night, Onii-chan,” she chanted, when dinner was done.
“Good night, Sakura.” Dutifully he dropped a kiss on her brow, and they went their separate ways. Daydreaming about galloping through the forest on Spirit, Sakura hummed and skipped her way down the halls and to her bedroom. With hardly a care in the world, Sakura opened the doors and let herself in, mindful to turn the key in the lock once she had done so.
She turned, and shrieked. Lounging in one of the chairs by her fireplace was Ralen, legs crossed, looking like he’d waiting for quite a while. Her sudden yelp seemed to amuse more than startle him.
“R-Ralen! …sir. You, uh, surprised me!”
“I could say the same to you.” He smirked at her expression. “Now now, what’s that face for? Is my presence here upsetting to you?”
Sakura would have very much liked to say yes, but she didn’t dare. Feet rooted to the floor, Sakura cast a sideways glance at the doors she’d just locked.
“Don’t look away from me, Sakura,” he chided, “that’s rude. Answer the question.”
“Uh… that is, you haven’t had much reason to enter my room before, sir. Is there something that you need?”
“I am so glad you asked. You can start by coming a little closer.” He beckoned with a finger. “Don’t worry about those doors, you won’t need to open them anytime soon.”
Instinct clamored at Sakura to lunge for the doors and run, but she buried the urge and took a small step forward. She was Master Yue’s slave. Ralen was not allowed to touch her. He couldn’t. He wouldn’t.
But just as on that day they first met, the promised protection was not giving her much comfort. Leisurely he examined her as she moved closer, gaze crawling up her body in a way that made her hug her arms around her waist.
“Do you know,” he began, when she stood five paces away, “how long I’ve been here, Sakura? Serving Yue in this castle?”
It was the last thing she could have ever guessed he’d say; perplexed, she shook her head.
“It will be thirty years this winter; also, coincidentally, it will be my thirtieth birthday. I was born here, slave, I’ve lived my entire life working for that creature and almost half of it working as the overseer. It’s a long time, isn’t it?”
Woodenly she nodded. “Yes… yes, sir, that’s a very long time.”
“And I’ve done it well. I’m smart, I manage the budget, make sure the castle’s kept immaculate and up to Yue’s standards, and keep him supplied with pleasure slaves. He relies on me. I’m telling you all this, slave, so you will understand that when I tell Lord Yue exactly what you and the captain have been doing, he is going to believe me.”
It took a second, or thereabouts, for the meaning of his words to hit her. When it did, the bottom fell out of Sakura’s world. He knew, somehow he knew, the one person in the castle they’d been so careful to hide it from, the one person she’d feared more than anyone.
“N-no,” she stuttered, “sir, I d-don’t know what you -”
“Shh, don’t bother. I know all about it, know about the kisses and him sleeping in your room and touching where he’s not supposed to touch. My dear Sakura, do you know what a terrible crime you’ve committed? What happens to slaves like you who touch other men without their master’s permission? Usually it’s a whipping… a public one.”
He licked his lips. Something had stuck in Sakura’s throat, when she tried to speak; nothing came out.
“And do you know what happens to the men who trespassed on someone else’s property? His employer’s property, no less. I can’t imagine what Yue will do when he finds out. Banish him from the castle, at the very least, I’m sure. A pity, so soon after his promotion. Isn’t he trying to support a family back home?”
“Please.” Sakura had found her voice again, somehow. “Please… don’t tell. He’ll lose everything.”
Ralen’s eyes narrowed briefly. “He? What, are you more worried about his problems than yours?” When she couldn’t answer, his lips twisted into a scowl. “Cute. Are you in love, or something?”
“I- we -”
“Fooled me. I can admit it, even if it hurts my pride. I’ve spent a lifetime keeping tabs on what the people in this castle are up to, I thought I was the best. If I’d suspected for even one second that the captain was interested in fucking any girls besides his horse, I’d have kept a closer eye on the two of you. I guess he was just waiting for someone like you to come along; virgins must be his type. What do you two do up here, anyway? You’ve probably gotten very creative having fun without turning that collar black.”
Sakura wanted to close her eyes and cover her ears, block out every nightmarish word that left Ralen’s lips. Her palms were sweating with terror, her heart sputtering away inside her chest. He was going to tell, she was sure of it, and Syaoran’s life would be destroyed.
“I always knew I hated him,” Ralen mused. “I just never had a very specific reason before. I really can’t wait to see how Yue punishes him.”
He braced his hands against the chair arms as if to stand, and a panicked Sakura blurted, “No! No, please don’t!”
“I beg your pardon, slave, but are you telling me to ignore a violation on Yue’s property, property that I am personally responsible for?”
“Please,” Sakura repeated, vaguely aware that she’d begun to shake. “He can’t lose this job – I’ll do anything. I’m begging you.”
Ralen’s lips turned up in a cold, calculating smile that made her throat constrict with fear.
“Anything, you said?”
Dread knotted up in her stomach, but she had no other choice but to nod.
“Anything… it’s an intriguing offer. Perhaps I won’t tell Yue after all. But that’s a favor on my part, and you of all people know that when I do favors, I expect compensation.”
“What do you want?” Sakura whispered.
Suggestively Ralen licked a fingertip. “You, of course. Willing, on your knees, whenever I command it. No complaining, no whining, no hiding behind your brother or that beast – or I tell.”
He stood, and Sakura backed up. In the firelight his face had become like a predator’s, ravenous and eager to destroy. It terrified her.
“B-but that’s not allowed -”
“I know, but the captain’s already helped himself. I see no reason why I shouldn’t get to enjoy the taste as well, especially seeing as how I’m the head of the household and should have gotten you first. That snot-nosed brat stepped on my territory, and it irritates me. Time to take what should have been mine since the third day after you got here. Stop backing away!” Impatiently he snagged her arm and yanked her forward, ignoring her squeal of pain. “Don’t you want me to keep the secret?”
“Y-yes,” she bleated, tears springing to her eyes at the sharp pressure squeezing her wrist.
“Then you will stay still and do as you’re told.”
Firmly he grasped her chin and tilted it up, giving her no chance to escape before he kissed her. Tomoyo’s kiss had always been soft and warm; Syaoran’s rough but exciting. The kiss of Ralen, though, was overwhelmingly slick and slimy, his tongue filling her mouth as if he sought to consume her all at once. Syaoran had once compared him to a snake and that was very much how he felt; even the hands holding her still were cold and clammy.
It seemed a year before he pulled away, and she had to gasp for air. Ralen smacked his lips with satisfaction.
“God in heaven, you don’t how long I’ve wanted to do that, how long I’ve dreamed of this moment. You taste divine.” He frowned at something on her face. “Stop crying, already. You act as if I’m ugly.”
He was ugly, in a way that had nothing to do with his firm square jaw or cornsilk-colored hair. Lecherous eyes and greedy sneers had twisted his good looks, distorting him so horribly that to his petrified victim he looked nothing less than a monster. Frantically she wiped at her cheeks.
“Yes sir. I-I’m sorry.”
“Of course you are.” He pulled away her hands and took care of the remaining tears himself – with his tongue. Sakura couldn’t help it; at the slippery wet touch she yelped in disgust. Ralen growled and clamped down harder on her shoulders.
“Stop it! It’s no use pretending to be a frightened little virgin, Sakura, we both know you’ve already done so much more. Am I so different from the captain? Is he better than me? I don’t believe it, not that boy.”
She didn’t dare answer, but he must have seen it in her face. Dark jealousy boiled in his eyes, along with old, well-nourished hatred.
“Fucking brat,” he swore. “Another price for my silence, slave, you will not see him or speak to him anymore.”
“What?” she cried, and his lips stretched into a cruel smile.
“That’s right. You won’t go outside and play with his horse, you won’t speak to him, you certainly won’t tell him about our new understanding. And you won’t let him touch you anymore, no, because you’re mine now.”
“But… to not see him again…”
“Are you arguing, slave? Do you want me to go to Yue?” Sakura thought her heart would break, but she shook her head. “That’s what I thought. Don’t worry, my pretty new slave, once I’ve had you you’ll forget all about him. I’ll make sure of it.”
He kissed her again, diving even deeper than last time, his hands slipping down from her shoulders to cup and grope her breasts. Every touch triggered a new wave of revulsion and Sakura had to struggle to push it down, almost gagged on Ralen’s tongue before he – finally! – withdrew. He looked pleased at the way she had to gasp for oxygen.
“This is more like it. You do know how to be obedient, when you’re not surrounded by those nosy interlopers. Oh, we’re going to play some wonderful games, Sakura, games that involve you tied to this bed and begging for mercy, games that I will always win and you will always lose.” As he spoke his lips moved under her chin and to her neck, and she had to bite back whimpers when he began licking and sucking. “But that fun can wait, for now, because I’m already so hard I can’t stand to hold back another minute. Get rid of that dress and get down on your knees.”
He tugged at his beltstrap with one hand and shoved Sakura, none too gently, down with the other. Clumsily Sakura collapsed to the rug, body and mind screaming with fresh terror. He wanted her to- no! She couldn’t do it, not for Ralen, not when it was scary enough with only Syaoran.
“I said to get undressed, slave,” Ralen snapped, when she didn’t move. “I’m more than happy to punish you if you really want it, but first we do this. I need you.”
He finished undoing his belt and dove inside his pants with one hand; quickly Sakura averted her eyes.
“Oh, please. I know you’ve seen it by now, there’s no point in pretending modesty. Though I wouldn’t mind hearing it’s a lot bigger than his.” His hand descended on top of her head and tried to shove her toward his hips.
“No!” Panicked, Sakura knocked his hand away and scrambled to her feet, but she wasn’t fast enough. Ralen snatched a fistful of her hair and yanked, almost bringing her to the floor again and provoking another cry of pain.
“Bitch, don’t make me beat this into you. You will do as I say tonight!” He jerked her head back and forth, angry, strong, determined to hurt her. But Sakura was no longer the timid peasant that once cowered under his gaze; someone had taught her how to defend herself against men that would hurt her. Body reacting almost automatically, she grasped Ralen’s hand in her own and twisted, forcing his wrist to turn at an unnatural angle. She surprised even herself at how quickly it happened, how effectively she brought him crashing down on the floor. Ralen opened his fist and yelled at the sudden pain, and Sakura bolted for the doors. She nearly crashed into them, in her haste, yanking at the handles before she remembered the doors were locked. Blindly she fumbled for the key and turned it, but before she could try the handle again Ralen grabbed her arm and threw her half across the room. She hit the floor hard and rolled once.
“You little BITCH!” Ralen bellowed, his face red with fury. “You whore! You’re no real virgin, you’ve sucked his cock and now you’ll suck mine. Did you think you were too good for me? Did you?” When she tried to stand he slapped her, so hard she hit the floor again. A blazing pain erupted on the side of her face. “Pretentious little cunt. You’re no princess, castle or not. You’re a pleasure slave, and your only purpose in life is to be fucked. And that’s exactly what I’m going to do.”
Sakura screamed when he hauled her up off the floor, a high-pitched, terrified scream that only the doomed can produce, screamed and thrashed and struck. Her tiny fists had no effect on his bigger body, though, and he had little difficulty dragging her to the bed. With a grunt he threw her against it and pinned her there, yanking at her dress straps so hard that the neckline tore.
“Go ahead and scream all you want,” he invited, sick joy plastered across his face. “No one will ever hear you.”
It was true, that alone on this floor and well away from either the servants’ wing or Yue’s room, no one would ever hear her actual scream. But the fear and adrenaline coursing through Sakura’s blood had triggered a latent ability lurking somewhere inside her, an ability so strong that when it was released, it sent shock waves of her panic reverberating through the castle.
HELPHELPHELPHELPHELPHELPHELPHELPHELPHELPHELPHELP
It slammed, like a breaking tidal wave, into the minds of the two men who loved her more than anything. Touya heard it, in the midst of making love with Yue, and jerked back from the kiss in shock. Yue blinked at the abrupt shift.
“What’s wrong, slave?”
“I-I don’t…” Bewildered, he stared at Yue and then winced at the second wave, so raw and hard that he had to press his forehead to the heel of his palm. “Ouch! Ow…”
“Toya?”
“Sakura,” he finally gasped, when he cut through the sheer noise enough to recognize her voice. “Sakura, she- she’s scared. She’s terrified! Oh my god…” A little of his own panic kickstarted Touya out of frozen inactivity, and he scrambled off the bed, tugging back on the shirt he’d been in the process of peeling off. A step or two later and he sensed that Yue was right behind him. Driven by her fear, Touya sprinted through the castle.
And Li heard it, just coming into the kitchen after the end of his evening watch. A cluster of the women and guardsmen were gathered about the fire, laughing and chatting, and one of them stood up when he entered the room.
“Cup of tea, captain?”
“Yes, thanks.” The nights were getting cooler, and the warm liquid was a welcome treat. They’d become kinder to him, he noticed, since the attack on the castle, more respectful. His equipment no longer disappeared from the stables. They smiled at him, included him in their conversations, and offered him tea. After all these months, it seemed they’d finally accepted him as captain.
He lifted the mug to his lips and dropped it when Sakura’s shout crashed down on his mind, blaring and frantic. The cup hit the floor and porcelain shards flew everywhere; he never heard the others’ startled yelps. He only ran.
Unlike Touya, Li was prepared for a psychic link with Sakura and recognized her cry instantly, also he had a fairly clear idea of just what it was that threatened her. Even if he hadn’t glimpsed it in her mind he would have known, for it was the one thing he’d feared all along. Desperation and panic lent speed to his feet and he tore through the castle, totally unaware of a bemused crowd of servants staring after him and wondering if they should follow. He ran like he’d never run before, halls and stairways flying past in a blur of white. Sakura’s doors burst open when he barrelled through them, the picture of Ralen trying to rip off Sakura’s dress a sight seared horrifyingly into his brain before he tore the man off her and threw him clear against the wall.
“I will kill you,” he promised him, and activated his sword. He’d only taken one step forward when a sudden weight latched himself onto his arm, though, Sakura disheveled and desperate.
“Syaoran, no. You can’t!”
“I’ll cut his head off for touching you!”
“You won’t do anything,” Ralen corrected, looking shaken but haughty, climbing to his feet and redoing his pants. “You wouldn’t dare.”
“The hell I wouldn’t.” Li lifted his sword again, but before he could move a chill swept through the room.
“What is this?” Yue asked, his voice dangerously cold. It was just like that other time, Li thought, how they all immediately froze.
“Sakura!” Touya brushed past Yue and swept her away from Syaoran’s side, hugging her so close she had difficulty breathing. The past few minutes had brought too many sudden changes, it was all too fast, the room was suddenly full of people. Onii-chan’s hands were everywhere, pushing her hair back from her face, cupping her chin, examining the faint bruise where Ralen hit her.
“Sakura, oh god, what happened? Are you alright? Look at your dress… what the hell happened here?” Without quite letting go of her he turned to face the other two men in the room, his voice dark with accusation. “Who did this to my sister?”
“Toya.” Yue held up a hand, coming to stand by the fireplace. “They are my servants, I will question them. I want to know what happened here tonight, and I want it told quickly and truthfully. Ralen?”
The blonde lifted his chin, almost visibly oozing self-righteousness. “Thank goodness you’ve come, Lord Yue. I’ve just caught the captain molesting your slave, and he nearly killed me for witnessing it.”
“What?” yelped Touya.
“Liar,” Syaoran growled, and his grip tightened on the sword. “You’re the one that attacked her! You would have raped her completely if I hadn’t stopped you!”
“What?”
“Lord Yue, you must believe me. Look at him, he’s the one waving a sword! He threatened to behead me!”
“You backstabbing son of a whore, you deserved it! You hit her and threw her on the bed!”
“Stop!” Yue commanded, and they both promptly shut up. Exasperated, he looked from one smug and confident face to the other, dark and glowering. “This is a very grave situation, Ralen, Captain Li. It seems a terrible crime was committed against my slave tonight, and only one of you is telling the truth. Since the other one will not confess, we will ask her.”
Every pair of eyes in the room turned on Sakura. In the hall too, she glimpsed a huddle of fascinated servants, following the events in her bedroom with bated breath. Everyone was watching, waiting for her to say what happened.
“Sakura.” Her brother again, speaking softly, took her hand and squeezed it. “You don’t have to be afraid, just tell us the truth. Which one hurt you?”
“Come, child, I must punish the man responsible. Tell me who it was.”
Involuntarily Sakura’s eyes flew from Syaoran, looking tense and wary, to Ralen, watching her with just enough of a glitter in his eyes to make her shudder. Thirty years, he’d lived and worked here in this castle. Yue would believe him, he’d said so. Name him and he’d tell everything. Their secret would be destroyed.
“Sakura?” Yue prompted, when a long minute of silence had passed. She couldn’t do it; mutely she met her master’s gaze and trembled. A tiny sigh escaped him.
“Very well. They both go to my dungeons then, and I will personally torture them until I learn the truth.”
“No!” Sakura bolted forward, or tried to, held back by her brother’s firm grip. “No, Master Yue, you can’t! Please!”
“A name, then.”
Sakura hiccuped, and in a moment of heartbreaking clarity, knew she had no choice. Their time had run out.
“It was Ralen,” she whispered, drawn against her will to look at him again. He must have been sure she would never dare name him; the shocked rage gathering in his eyes made her want to shrink into a little ball. “Ralen hurt me, Master Yue. An-and he’s been cruel to me for a long time before this, he watched me undress and made me... do things while he watched. He is the one responsible.”
A few things happened all at once: her brother’s sharp intake of breath, and the grip on her shoulders tightening painfully, a drop in the room’s temperature of a few degrees, and Ralen’s rapid denial.
“It’s a lie!” he screeched, and jabbed his finger in Syaoran’s direction. “She’s been sleeping with the captain for months, Lord Yue! He’s the one that’s violated your property! They’re conspiring to get me in trouble!”
“Liar!” Syaoran shouted again.
“What the hell is going on?” Touya wailed.
“Silence!” Yue barked, looking angry, bewildered, and absolutely fed up with the tangle of lies and accusations. Again he turned to Sakura. “Is this true, slave? Have you been in inappropriate contact with this boy?”
Most humans found it difficult to lie to Yue’s face. Sakura was no exception, and an even worse liar than most. Helplessly caught in his frosty stare, Sakura knew that she had no choice but to open her mouth and admit yes.
“That’s not right.”
The words stuck in her throat before they had a chance to form, and everyone looked at Syaoran. Shoulders dropped in defeat, his sword lowered, he would not look at her. Sakura thought she saw him swallow.
“Ralen has been abusing the slave… and so have I. Everything that I did to her was completely against her will. I-I hurt her.”
Ralen’s mouth fell open in astonishment, and so did Sakura’s. Why on earth would he…
It took a moment, to understand, but when it clicked Sakura’s panic returned in full force. “No!” she shrieked, and lunged to his side, unsucessfully. With an oath her brother yanked her back and fought to subdue her when she struggled. “No, Master, that’s not true, that’s a lie! He never hurt me, I wanted it, I always wanted it!”
Syaoran flashed her a dark look and she thought she could even hear the words in his mind – shut UP, Sakura! She ignored them.
“Only Ralen hurt me, Master Yue, please don’t hurt Syaoran he never hurt me and I love him -”
Onii-chan’s hand clamped down over her mouth, rather hastily, and his other arm pinned her solidly to his chest. She could feel the suddenly rapid rise and fall of his lungs behind her, a faster heartbeat that signaled panic, but right now only Syaoran mattered. Screaming through her gag, she begged Yue to believe her.
If he was listening, he gave no indication of it. Coldly he looked from one criminal to the other.
“Slave, your sister needs calming. Take her and find another place for her to sleep tonight. I will deal with these two.”
Sakura shrieked through her brother’s hand, but Onii-chan just muttered an affirmative and scooped her up in his arms. They were almost out the door when her brother paused, and half-turned to mention one last thing.
“Oh, and you should really stop calling me that.”
Yue looked blankly at her brother, his brow etched with confusion, and impatiently Onii-chan elaborated. “Someone touched her, Yue. Our deal is off. I am no longer your slave.”
Oh
Shit
No
were the words that ran through Li’s mind, in the horrible silence that followed, as Kinomoto shot a final cool glare at his – former – master and left the room. Yue stood frozen to the floor, openly stunned and horrified. He knew it, Li just fucking knew it, that there’d always been something more to Kinomoto’s enslavement, but it never once occurred to him that he and Yue had brokered any kind of deal. He’d become a slave voluntarily, agreed to all of it, on one very simple condition that he and Ralen had both just violated. The temperature in the room plummeted, and a violent shiver ran through Li’s body.
They’d just cost Yue his slave, and when Yue turned back to face them there was such rage, such inconsolable fury crackling in his colorless eyes, Li knew there could only be one fate for them. For what he’d lost, Yue would kill them both.
Ralen died first, in a spectacular blast of light and razor sharp diamonds. Li flinched at the speed and ruthlessness of it, but didn’t move as the body flew back and hit the post of the bed with a solid thunk, crumpling into a torn and bloody heap, eyes still wide open with surprise. Someone in the hall screamed. He did not try to run. What was the point? Breathing nothing more than a memory, Li Syaoran lifted his chin, looked Yue straight in the eye, and waited to die.
