CHAPTER 46
"Keisuke. It's a relief to see you're still alive." Ryosuke's voice sounded as tired as his gaunt face implied.
"Aniki, you shouldn't be here. This is a dangerous situation." Keisuke grabbed a chair and sat as he spoke.
The spiky haired blond was upset about his brother's presence. Ryosuke was not capable of dealing with the kind of violence that drug dealers could unleash. Because they were targeting all of Project D, he was in danger. The last thing Keisuke wanted was for his brother to become a hostage. With so much to do, and too many people to save, protecting Ryosuke was impossible. Adding another victim to the list was not an option.
"Someone has to keep an eye on Sammy-san. She's already in grave trouble in America over killing Mogi." Ryosuke's lips thinned. A furtive glare was shot toward the onna who was introducing her friends to everyone in slow Nihongo.
He felt a hand drop onto his shoulder. "Ne, Keisuke-kun, this is my otosān, Russell Singing-Wolf, and my friends' Kelly Kincaid, Gus Lind, and Jake Kershaw. They came along to help. All three are hard-core in a fight, the same as me and otosān."
"Uhm, domo for the introductions, Sammy-chan." Keisuke nodded with a frown.
"I'm going to get something to drink. Anyone else here want a soda?"
"We're fine, Sam. I'd like to talk to Keisuke." Ryosuke intervened. Keisuke noticed his eye brow twitching. Things were not going well between Sammy and his brother. Few people annoyed Ryosuke, yet it seemed Sammy had for some reason.
"I thought no charges were being pressed over Mogi's death. Sammy's attachment to the Embassy was supposed to negate that possibility, Aniki. Was she wrong?"
His brother's eyes closed and he sighed heavily. "There were no charges, Otouto. That isn't the problem. Sammy-san's got a large record of fighting drug traffickers, and other criminals outside her jurisdiction. Killing Mogi was an addition to an unsavory record of using extreme force. Her ideals about when or how someone should kill are distressing. To be honest, she's bordering on a serial killer's mentality by modern medical views."
Keisuke felt his lips twisting into a grimace as he listened to his brother's comments. Sammy's situation was bad, but not his main concern. Finding out his brother's opinion about their ryōshin's underhanded actions was more important. "Sammy-chan's a grown onna, Aniki. You can't baby-sit her since she's an adult. Sammy said you were here because of being so angry with our ryōshin that you had to leave."
"That is another problem, but less important, . . . for the moment. If Sammy-san helps you get Fujiwara back, and anyone else dies, the authorities may lock her away as a serial killer, Otouto." Alarm was skating along his spine as he looked at his brother's very serious expression. Hearing something of this nature was unexpected.
"Lets hope nobody dies when I find Takumi and my musuko. I'd say you fighting with our ryōshin is pretty damn important too, Aniki. I'm kind of shocked that you got mad enough to leave. I have a reason to be pissed off. Minasan knew that I have a kodomo, but never bothered telling me." Keisuke snarled softly.
"We were both ignorant about the situation. However, I don't believe this is the place, or time to discuss that particular problem. You have every right to be angry. Learning that you have a musuko like this is unacceptable. I understand they always had legal custody, but did nothing three years ago when Mitani vanished. That also angers me because it was their responsibility." Ryosuke spoke in a soft, lethal edged voice.
"I'm getting him, Takumi, and minasan they abducted back. These bastards aren't getting away with turning my family into pawns, Aniki. I learned the truth a few days ago. Part of this situation with Takumi vanishing is because I stopped the same drug Syndicate when I was an active gangster. The syndicate coerced Akiho to break Walking Man's hold on Akagi's streets. The syndicate used her younger siblings as hostages to make her comply. They abducted her from the mental hospital to keep her from telling the authorities about how they killed her younger onīsan when she balked at killing me."
Ryosuke paled as he listened. Keisuke was unhappy about telling his brother, yet felt that bringing it out into the open was better. Little possibility existed for this staying hidden once he tore the slaver's domain apart to get everyone back. The truth was going to come out, probably through the nightly news and newspapers. Once he got Takumi and his musuko back by force, he could not stop disturbing facts from surfacing. Saving Takumi and his kodomo was his responsibility, and Keisuke would carry it out no matter the personal cost.
"Nani?" Ryosuke's voice was a thread of sound.
"I'm not finished, Aniki. A slave trader is involved that became obsessed with me because of how Akiho changed. It seems she has Akiho who has been rebelling ever since. which started her fixation. Kahori, this slaver of sorts, is the one that has Takumi, and my musuko hidden somewhere here in Tokyo. She's apparently well known in the prostitution industry. She's been making a fair amount of money with a yaoi manga featuring Takumi and me since we launched Project D last spring. This is too weird for me to even get my head around so I know you must be reeling from all of this."
Akimoto set a glass next to him. "Here you go, Keisuke-nī. It's just soda, but I figure you probably need something. Long time no see, Ryosuke. From the look on your face, I bet you're having a hard time getting this mess. You want something to drink? My treat?"
Ryosuke shook his head. "Domo, Akimoto, but I'm not thirsty. This is a lot to grasp. Part of me wants to believe I'm hearing about some movie plot, instead of reality. Only Keisuke could manage to get into this much trouble."
"We've got Keisuke's back. We'll get your racing team back in no time, Ryosuke. Walking Man's much stronger now. Nothing's going to stop us from doing the right thing. We'll run these drug dealers right out of Nihon. You, Keisuke, and Fujiwara will be racing in America soon." Akimoto was grinning as he spoke Keisuke noticed.
"I doubt Takumi will be in good enough shape to race, Aki. I'm assuming they have drugged him already. If that's the case, nobody's racing anywhere. I can't run off to another country before everything's cleared up anyway. There's no time for racing in the schedule, and that's a fact. These problems don't have an easy solution." Keisuke answered.
"Leaving us with the issue of Sammy-san's presence causing problems." Ryosuke looked over at him again.
"I don't understand naze you're so worried about Sammy-chan, Aniki. She's a bodyguard and supposed to do the things she does." Keisuke frowned at his brother.
Another voice, deep and guttural entered the conversation. "My musume is a warrior that does not compromise her principles. Her choices anger the white man's government because she follows the tribal code, not the hypocrisy modern governments practice for keeping peace between nations. She kills the unforgivable without fail. Because of being true to my people, the white man's government claims that she has something wrong with her mind. A thousand years ago, the white man's government would call her a hero. Now she is considered a problem for upholding a warrior's code."
Keisuke looked at the older man sitting close enough to Ryosuke to overhear their conversation. "White man's government? I don't understand."
"Russell-sama refers to the American government. Tribal reservations are considered miniature countries under forced appropriation by the United States. On reservation lands, Sammy's actions fall under tribal laws, not standard American. Outside reservation borders, her actions are under American laws which sometimes differ from the tribal laws she adheres too." Ryosuke explained.
"I see." Keisuke changed the subject. "Nani is with this Jordan character that Sammy-chan mentioned? She mentioned something about a contract that doesn't involve saving my musuko, Aniki."
Russell answered. "Jordan is a group of freelance mercenaries. They work under contract for the private sector. Cutthroat is the best description of the group's policies. Robi hired them to find minasan faster than the authorities can, so you could be in the Iron Will. He is trying to be helpful. Scum and pirates that barely follow law fills Jordan. That is the reason my musume came to help. Jordan must be kept in check if you are to get your kodomo out alive."
"Sounds like a bunch of wanna be Black Market punks to me." Akimoto butted into the conversation. Russell's lips twitched toward a smile as he nodded.
Keisuke stared at the older man across from him. It seemed odd that Russell referred to Robi with masculine pronouns. "Matte. I've met Martonelli Robi-san. She offered to sponsor Project D in the Iron Will race."
"Robi-san is a hermaphrodite, Otouto. Robi, however, cycles between the male and female dominant hormonal changes associated with each gender in Robi's body. Right now Robi is in a male dominant hormonal swing so Russell-sama is using male pronouns to distinguish that fact. Only one gender that their body contains dominates most hermaphrodites. Neither gender dominates year round for Robi."
"Whoa. Is that normal?" Akimoto asked with obvious curiosity. Keisuke was trying to comprehend the idea.
Russell explained. "Sometimes Robi is an onna to the core of being, and sometimes Robi is a man. It has always caused difficulties. Kami-sama's touch makes life difficult for Robi. My musume is one who can accept Robi. Because of her acceptance, Robi goes overboard to keep Sam happy."
Ryosuke spoke. "That's naze Robi-san was saying that anything Sammy-san wants, she will get. Most people have trouble dealing with Robi's split gender issues, and react badly. Sammy-san reveres hermaphrodites for being Kami-sama's chosen. She's not plagued by confusion with Robi's personality swings because of religious views."
"So how do we keep Sammy out of trouble, Aniki? This is my fight. Also, shouldn't Robi have asked us before involving freelance gangsters in finding minasan?"
Akimoto sounded glum. "I'd say that telling Sammy-san to butt out is going to be rough. She's not one to back down once she decides, if you ask me. She busted my chops hard when all I did was give her compliment on her great ass."
"You insulted her as I recall, Akimoto. Sammy-san had every right to put a fist in your face over how you complimented her. It was rude." Ryosuke's tone was dry.
"Minasan knows I have a hard time controlling myself. Comes with the territory of being a nympho. That's one reason I get into so many fights. If I'm fighting, I'm not thinking about how hot people are." Akimoto answered
Keisuke snickered. Only Akimoto could believe something that outrageous. The sad fact that it was probably true only made it funnier. Ryosuke was looking at him with a sardonic lift to his brow. "Gomen na, minasan. It's just that in Aki's case, he may be right."
"Point taken. At any rate, Russell-sama is the one who knows Sammy-san best. Any suggestions, sir?"
"I'll keep her out of trouble. There's a good chance this won't go sour. Asada's a wily old bastard. He has a strong sense of moral right and wrong too. The Yakuza isn't like America's mafia. It maintains a very high moral standard by comparison. Wrong is wrong in this crowd's mind set. Depending on how the old timer takes the file, we will settle everything in a day, perhaps a week at the most. They won't hold it against you since someone wrongfully attacked you in the beginning of this mess."
Keisuke grumbled. "An outstanding drug debt from the kēsatsu seizures exists. Worse, I've fought with this drug ring before. I didn't agree with their scum bag ways then, and I'm determined that I will stop them. The problem is that the Yakuza may decide that Takumi and the rest of us owe them for the huge amount of money lost in the seizures, Russell-sama.
"Naze should the Yakuza Overlord decide that you have to repay a nasty cartel that lacked discipline and security." Russell asked.
"Because of my previous fight with this Syndicate. I've caused problems that infringed on their profits before this shooting incident with Mogi. Fighting the Yakuza on top of these drug Enforcers to get Takumi and the others back is the last thing I want. If that happens, we're in for a much nastier fight than we already have on our hands to get our friends back."
A new voice entered the conversation. "Ojīsan has only tolerated drug traffickers and dealers in the past because people want their products. His tolerance has worn over thin with this latest spate of disasters. You have no need to fear retaliation against yourself over this, Keisuke-san. Bad press has been placed in front of the public far too often because of this drug syndicate."
Keisuke tilted his head upward to see the new speaker. Asada Kiyo stood next to his shoulder. When the man had walked up was unknown. Russell and his brother had not warned him, though they could both see him coming. It was an unsettling thought. Had he unwittingly offended a Yakuza agent because of his words? Takumi could not afford for him to make any mistakes.
"Asada-san, I can only hope that's true. If anyone needs punishment to satisfy the past, it's me. I take full responsibility for my actions and orders from a few years ago. Minasan else is innocent, especially the small komodo that they have taken as a hostage. Putting a small komodo in chains is the act of a coward that has no honor I think." Keisuke could not hide his frown as he spoke to the captain of team Roaring Falls. Yakuza or not, Kiyo was still a fellow street racer.
"Ojīsan will agree with your sentiment. A word of caution before meeting Asada-sama, Keisuke-san. Control your anger. We have not done anything. We also know how many men came with you from Gunma. That was not a wise choice under the circumstances."
"My friends followed me here to get my teammates free. They intend to stop the drug Syndicate again, Asada. Our fight never involved your people." Keisuke made certain his voice traveled to the ears of the two men standing behind Kiyo.
Their mode of dress, and demeanor tipped him off that they were higher ranked Yakuza guards. Keisuke meant his words. They had not come to fight the Yakuza, only the drug traffickers, and slaver to get his family and friends out of harm's way at all costs. On this issue, none of them would be backing down.
"So, you really have made Ideguchi's subordinates suffer before. Kurou said as much when he was giving his report to Ojīsan. An interesting hobby you have, Keisuke-san. Not many engage organized crime rings for fun." Kiyo sounded amused.
"I didn't say it was fun. We did it because those bastards were hurting innocent people. If they took their anger out on their addicts, we would have left them alone." Keisuke pointed out.
With a chuckle Kiyo waved him to follow his lead. Keisuke got out of his chair and brushed past the other two men with Kiyo. He stuck close to the other street racer as they moved toward the back of the dimly lit bar. In a few moments Keisuke was facing a much older and distinguished looking man in a business suit. Kurou was standing nearby. He noticed the slight nod Kurou gave him as he stopped beside the table.
"Asada-sama, this is Takahashi Keisuke. Takahashi Keisuke, Asada-sama." Kiyo made introductions. With a flourish of his hand the old man told him to have a seat. With a jaded eye Keisuke noticed the folder he had gone through several times sat on the table before the Yakuza's highest ranked regional overseer. It rankled that Project D fans had unwittingly put Takumi in jeopardy.
Noting his eyes, the older man sounded thoughtful. "Kurou said you have been most helpful in getting this file into my hands. For that I owe you domo."
Looking up, Keisuke's eyes collided with Asada-sama's. "It's nothing, Asada-sama. Walking Man had to come here to finish our latest fight with this drug ring anyway. They've hurt innocent people before. They're doing it again. It has nothing to do with your people in our eyes. Kurou agrees something needs to be done about this group. That is naze we helped get that folder to you. The Walking Man gang has to do something about them, sir. We accept that this is our problem to solve."
"You have courage, Takahashi. Kurou says you are also a great fighter. However, I am afraid that Kurou is correct that I need to be involved in gaining control over this syndicate also. Kurou's suspicious that Kahori has been breaking our laws, and I do need to make certain of the truth. The news coverage of your teammates abductions give me reason to involve myself already. This file confirms much. Do you understand?" The old man's tone had a hard edge Keisuke did not particularly care to hear.
He replied. "Hai. I do understand your position. I hope you can understand mine also. This bitch, Kahori, has my very young musuko, and my friends in chains, sir. I have to get them back no matter the cost to myself. I have no other choice. The longer she has them, the worse shape they'll be in when I get them out of there. This group should have the chops to face their enemies, not take innocent people hostage to win. Minasan waiting down the street faced them before, and won. We'll gladly face them again to protect the innocent."
A snowy eyebrow rose as the old man regarded him. "Spoken like a true samurai. I knew nothing of any komodo. How old is this shonen?"
"He is around three-years-old, sir. Kahori abducted Mitani Akiho from the hospital she was in shortly before he was born. I only found out a few days ago that Kahori has them. I've heard that Kahori intends to use them as leverage to force me into chains for her sick little prostitution racket. I understand she'll do whatever else she pleases with them once she has me." Keisuke had no idea of his son's birthday, or even his name.
"Kurou said this plan is to regain the massive losses from a recent drug seizure they suffered. I'm not certain I see how this scheme could generate so much income."
"Project D has a very large fan base that Kahori is using to make her filthy money, Asada-sama. Rumors about myself and our downhill-specialist being together helped increase her profits without a doubt."
"Rumors that I understand are true. However, that is not my concern. This situation is complex to be blunt. With the possibility of Yakuza laws being broken, this becomes my problem also, Takahashi. It will take time to insure things are straightened out."
"With all due respect, Sir, we don't have a lot of time here. Project D did nothing wrong, but was attacked by my teammate's ex-girlfriend for some Black Market fence's twisted amusement. This Quai Tou nut job was the one that left the information leading to the busts in his car. Your grandson killed Quai Tou that night to bring things under control. Shouldn't your people factor that into this situation before we get handed any outstanding drug debt?"
"You make an excellent argument, Takahashi. However, I must insist that anyone crossing the Yakuza get punished. I will have your cooperation. I will insure that no one has harmed your friends and family. You have my word of honor that I will make certain of their location effective immediately. From there we will continue with our investigation into this Syndicate's behavior, and make certain we have punished the wrong doers."
Keisuke took a deep breath to keep from exploding. He controlled his voice with difficulty "I understand, and agree for the most part, Sir. However, my fight with this Syndicate started three and a half years ago, Asada-sama. I believe they will get rid of minasan if they get wind of our talk today. You lose your proof if that happens. Too many innocent lives are at stake. If not for the lives involved, I'd back off without another word. I have no problem cooperating with your people. My objection is to waiting for results when I genuinely believe minasan is running out of time. Would you consent to sending two or three people you trust to act as your witnesses today before the Syndicate realizes I'm in town? That way you get your needed proof, and I get my friends and family to safety before anything goes wrong."
The old man seemed surprised by his proposal and adamance. Yet to Keisuke, this was not a case of being willfully stubborn to satisfy injured pride. Takumi's life was on the line, and nothing would stop him from saving his beloved. All Keisuke could do was pray that Asada would meet him halfway.
Kiyo spoke from his shoulder. "Part of this mistake is my responsibility, Asada-sama. I invited Project D to race against my team. Quai Tou's doxy attacked them in front of me, and I did not recognize the Syndicate connection before the authorities had already removed the drug evidence. Takahashi also makes a valid point about Kahori dumping or killing minasan before we can do anything if she learns of this meeting. Takahashi Keisuke sounds sincere about cooperating with us also. Perhaps we should take his proposal seriously, and move before the Syndicate can hide any double-cross."
"With this folder that Kurou delivered, they are unable to lie. Someone ignored Kumagai's orders, and Shimoda is dead. I have every right to destroy them and I will, grandson. Minasan will obey my rules." The old man looked at him. Keisuke knew he was treading in dangerous water, yet he found himself grinding his teeth and returning the stern gaze.
"Only your well-meaning intention keeps me from boxing your ears, Takahashi. Better yet, you speak with the conviction of a samurai warrior. All of your points are similar to those a samurai would make which is a good thing. Obviously, you're sincere about saving your friends, even if it means irritating me to get the job done. Foolish because you are still young perhaps, yet refreshingly honest. I know you do not mean to be disrespectful, so I will agree to your proposal. You will return to your companions at the restaurant and wait for Kurou, my grandson, and a couple others who will go with you. Is that acceptable?"
Keisuke felt so relieved he was tempted to crumple in a heap. The wheat-haired racer stood. Giving the old man a deep bow, Keisuke answered. "Hai. Domo arigato gozaimasu, Asada-sama. Domo sumimasen if I caused offense without knowing it. It was not intentional."
"I thought not. Now, I have things to put into action. Kiyo, show Takahashi and his friends out. We have things to plan. Kurou, come here." With those words the old man turned away. He followed Kiyo toward the exit with a quick side trip to collect Akimoto and the others. Seeing Sammy and her friends stand up and follow was a surprise about which Keisuke had no chance to ask. He would get answers soon enough.
