CHAPTER 47
Looking around the hotel parking lot where his gangster friends, Yakuza officers, and several of Kurou's enforcers were gathering, Keisuke felt a heavy burden settle upon his shoulders. Keisuke was aware of how courageous his highschool friends were. Roughly half were bisexual or gay. Their degraded and ostracized lives gave them the strength to survive most fights. They would tax all of their survival instincts fully before nightfall he feared. Perhaps it was still enough to see them through the hell they had volunteered to face.
Keisuke glanced at Asada and the others who were also leading the assaults on various red-light district houses, and the two slave compounds around Tokyo. Although he had lost sleep along with Keisuke, Shinsei, Akimoto, Kurou, and the Americans, Kiyo looked disgustingly lively. Having sent his group to this hotel after getting their weapons listed, the fighting force seemed well rested. However, the leadership was tired from making battle plans until one in the morning. Part of Keisuke wished they could begin this assault the next day so he could sleep. Most of his being wanted to get this over with, and Takumi restored to his arms.
"Listen up minasan." The gangsters and miscellaneous others closed ranks and faced him. "There are three places where Project D's missing team may be found. Because we have no choice but to split up and hit all the sites simultaneously, we've created teams for simultaneous strikes. Shinsei, Akimoto, and I have the lists of names. Once you know which team you're on, we will give further instructions."
Russell Singing Wolf stopped beside him as Akimoto began calling out names. "I told Gus, Jake and Kelly to round out two of the groups because they know advanced emergency medical. Sam and I know enough first aid to be of use saving lives. We'll be in your group with Asada. Kelly and Jake will be in the second with Akimoto and Kurou, and Gus is with the third group that Shinsei and Matsui are leading."
"When did you decide this?" Keisuke looked at the rawboned copper skinned man.
"This morning. Asada has to be the one that hits the max security country estate. Gus can handle the various red-light district's whore, and slut house raids. That's the least likely spot for your friends to be found, or for serious injuries. Kelly and Jake can handle the mid range security facility injuries that may happen in the suburbs." Russell explained.
"You think the big country estate is where we'll find Takumi and the others, don't you?"
"Of Kahori's three domains, it's the best place to keep someone well hidden. However, I think your friends are split between the mid range and the high security compounds. Asada's our ticket to getting inside the high security facility. Kahori will let him and his associates in because of his Ojīsan. Asada can make sure security measures are fouled up long enough for us to get inside without the worst case scenario happening."
"Nani if Takumi and the others aren't in either place?"
"Yakuza backing means we will capture Kahori. That's the fastest way to keep your friends alive no matter where they're located. With her in Yakuza hands, her people will produce minasan in good shape to insure they get their employer back. She's their meal ticket so they need her, Keisuke-kun."
Ryosuke walked over. "Keisuke, we should let the kēsatsu handle this raid. Doing this could put you in prison."
"Forget it, Aniki. We have to cooperate with the Yakuza. Otherwise our teammates will die, or be sold as slaves before the kēsatsu can even act."
"The only one you're worried about is Fujiwara." Ryosuke snapped.
Before Keisuke could answer, Russell turned to his brother. "Involving the authorities prematurely guarantees all your friends get disposed of like your onīsan said. Is that really nani you want?"
Ryosuke paled. "iie. However, I disagree with this choice because it breaks the law. Vigilante behavior can only make things worse for minasan, and ruin Keisuke's chances of following his dreams."
Keisuke argued. "Asada will call in the authorities once we get control of the estates' security, Aniki. We will turn over Kahori to the Kēsatsu. The authorities will charge her for all of her crimes. Asada-sama is turning over the file Kurou brought him this morning. He's doing that to make certain all the charges stick."
Asada's voice cut off their discussion. "All right, gather round, minasan. In the interest of expediency, Asada-sama is having me deliver a meeting notice to Kahori-sama. Each team's Yakuza representative is carrying an identical notice. That's our ticket into each facility. Once inside, my associates and I will begin putting up resistence to buy you time to get in. Singing Wolf-sama has borrowed an armor-plated limo from his Embassy to remove the heavy gates so you can subdue Kahori's men. Our group has trained Enforcers, and Yakuza bodyguards to deal with any gunfire. Let Kurou's and my men deal with shooters whenever possible. I want the fewest number of cars used. Some of you will ride in the limo. The rest of the cars will follow Russell-sama's limo into the estate and take down the guards before they can fully arm themselves if possible. By swarming the stronghold, we're attempting to get people onto all the different levels of the mansion before Kahori slaughters her prisoners. Speed is essential for this plan to work. Our objective is to keep minasan alive."
Ryosuke put a hand on his shoulder. "I wish you would reconsider going, Keisuke. You cannot handle the condition Fujiwara may be in if he's still alive, Otouto. Let someone else handle this raid."
"I'm going, Aniki. Whether Takumi's in a hospital before I see him, or I rescue him personally, the outcome's the same. This is something I have to face anyway." He gripped his brother's arm for a moment and stepped toward the waiting cars. Nothing would stop him from doing everything he could to save Takumi and his unmet musuko now. This was his responsibility. He dropped into the limousine's back seat and waited.
Russell, Samantha, and one of Kurou's men got into the front seat. Gingo, Maruyama, Teru, Ryota, and Azuma settled in for the ride in the forward and back facing rear seats. Asada's Evo 3 headed onto the street. Russell followed the tricked out vehicle. Other cars followed them out of the hotel lot. With a heavy sigh Keisuke closed his eyes, ordering himself to stay calm.
Taking a nap during the trip was not Keisuke's plan, yet before he knew it, Teru was shaking his shoulder. "Asada and his goons just went through the gates. Russell-sama should get a call from Asada soon. Hope this excuse that he's delivering an invitation for his Ojīsan does the trick."
"The file Kurou took the Yakuza proves Kahori's playing dirty, so she'll be behind bars by evening with or without the meeting excuse." Keisuke replied.
The limousine pulled away from the curb. The heavy vehicle's acceleration surprised Keisuke. In moments the sleek machine pulled a serpentine feint and hard over into the estate driveway. Going roughly sixty-five when it hit the heavy wrought iron gate, the limo ploughed through the thick bars, ripping one side off its hinges. While the gate's fully hinged, yet twisted and half-buckled side recoiled wildly back toward the street, the first sedan slid between the warped entryway. Other cars were ploughing through the damaged barrier.
So far everything was going as planned. If their luck held, they could probably get inside before the overseers of each level began butchering people. The massive limo skidded sideways as Russell hit the brakes and turned his steering wheel hard. Before their doors could open when the car stopped bright flashes of sparks began jumping off the surface of the vehicle. Seeing bullets ricochet off the armored plates churned Keisuke's stomach although they told him to expect it. Opening his door, which was away from the hail of bullets. Keisuke crouched as he left the vehicle with a metal bat in hand. The others were following him out and taking cover beside the car.
Several loud reports from Russell's gun ended the shoot out. Keisuke and the others raced as fast as they could toward the mansion doors. Several large dogs came tearing around the building intent on attack. Skidding to a halt with his bat at the ready, Keisuke caught the first massive beast square in the chest before its fangs could reach his throat. The animal screamed in pain as it flew backwards. He heard more gunshots but refused to take the time to see who was doing the shooting. More yelps and a couple of human screams caught his ears.
Taking down a second vicious dog, Keisuke charged up the stairs to get inside. The doors were shut and locked he discovered. It took himself and Gingo tag teaming the doors with all their weight and strength to get inside. Ryota and Teru were hard on their heels as the group spilled through the doors.
Once inside, things turned ugly. A loud snapping noise and a flash of hot air grazed Keisuke's cheek as Gingo's mid-section exploded. Dropping and rolling to the side barely kept him from the same fate as Gingo crashed to the ground. Teru and Ryota seemed fine as they had also dropped and rolled behind the heavy couches on each side of the foyer. Maruyama was down, clutching the stump of an arm on the foyer floor.
Moments later the sound of gunfire from the outside took down the person near the staircase. Russell and Sammy entered followed by the rest of their group. Asada was nowhere to be seen. Keisuke heard shouting from deeper in the house on this level. "Ryota, Teru, Azuma, go upstairs with Sammy-chan. Make sure we're clear. Minasan else, follow me."
With those words, Keisuke charged past the downed gunner under the staircase and raced toward the shouts in the deeper interior. Asada had to be toward the back of the building. Two hallways intersected in which prisoners or other guards might be found. As Keisuke came abreast, he slowed, snapping more instruction. "Six split off to secure this area. The rest stay with me."
Already their numbers were down to eleven as the six divided and took both hallways. If this dash revealed many more hallways to lock down, Keisuke wondered if there would be anyone left to get to the lower levels in time. Perhaps he should have only sent three to the upper level, yet he knew that would mean two teams per side to take care of the large number of rooms above. Forcing the thought aside, Keisuke slammed on the brakes as he came across a heavy wooden door. The shouting was coming from the other side. With Russell stopping next to him Keisuke grabbed the door knob. It refused to turn.
"Its booby trapped, get back!" Russell had his arm and was jerking him backward before he realized there was a keypad on the wall. A moment later a heavy cloud of powder and a sharp bang was rocking Keisuke's senses. That was another close call he had not expected. Getting back up, Keisuke coughed. He had been several paces ahead of the rest of the group. As the rest trotted up to him, Russell muttered, "Jackpot. Let's give our allies a hand." This time he took the lead, and Keisuke let him.
Dying was not an option if he was going to save Takumi. Not wishing to push his luck, Keisuke stuck close to the copper skinned man. He seemed to know his way around. Around another corner and they faced three big fighters with weapons in hand. Keisuke dodged the left fighter's sword and brought his bat into play. Dropping that guard was impossible because of the speed of the other fighter's blade. Parrying the razor edged weapon made striking back impossible. Concentrating on holding his own, Keisuke had no choice but to give ground to the other man.
Kan came to his aide and managed to get in a hard blow to the swordsman's solar plexus as Keisuke used his bat as a buffer. Pivoting on his heels, Keisuke used his badly damaged bat to clip a second guard in the shoulders. The last was already down thanks to Russell. With a snapped command to tie the trio up once they were under control, Keisuke headed into the next room over.
Kiyo and his team were fighting over some kind of computerized system with four more guards. They had dropped one of the trio and blood was pooling around his place on the carpet. Kiyo and his other associate were barely holding their own.
Jumping into the fray, Keisuke's bat slammed into one of the four's upper back and snapped in half. Although the bat end broke off, his swing was hard enough that the guard flew into the closest wall and crumpled at the base. Stepping sideways to evade the retaliation of the guard closest to his position, Keisuke almost ate a throwing knife literally. It grazed his cheek on the way past. He heard a groan come from behind.
Dropping the mangled remains of his weapon, Keisuke ducked another knife and spun to see who was hurt. Eida had a throwing knife sticking out of his shoulder. Realizing that the other man could no longer fight Keisuke grabbed his bat and shoved him toward the exit. With a nod the other gangster slipped into the other room where it would be harder to hit him a second time.
Re armed, Keisuke spun back around looking for the unseen knife thrower. It took a moment to find the nook concealing the other man. Lunging with all of his might, Keisuke evaded the next two knives, catching the coward in the side with a hard punch that caved in his ribs. The other man gagged as he sank to his knees. Blood gushed from his mouth as his hands came up to wrap around his torso. Keisuke did not take the time to think about the meaning of the blood. He was too busy to wonder. Kiyo and the other Yakuza member were in front of the keyboard cursing.
"Nani, Kiyo?"
"This is the main security center for this complex. Kahori hit a button and jumped through that door before I could stop her. It's not standard issue by any means so if I touch anything I could wind up killing us all. I'd bet the witch has the door booby trapped so we can't get to her without casualties."
Looking over his shoulder, Keisuke growled. "Kan, get Teru and his laptop now!" The wiry man charged out of the room.
"How long will it take him to hack into this system do you think?" Asada asked, looking grim.
"No idea. We've got several badly injured fighters already. Nani else are we going to face once we get these two doors open I wonder?" Looking around the room, Keisuke saw Russell hunkered down next to the wounded Yakuza fighter, his backpack in hand.
"This one's a goner. I'll give the other two first aid while we wait for the hacker to get down here."
Keisuke turned away as Russell stood. Turning back to the console Kiyo was studying, Keisuke felt his hands clench tight. "Is it time to call the Kēsatsu yet?"
Kiyo turned to look at him for a moment then nodded. "Considering we don't know where that door leads, I'd say it's not a bad choice. If that door is an escape route, the authorities can catch Kahori on the road. We require an ambulance or two also." Kiyo grabbed his phone and dialed.
Keisuke began to study the room itself. Stopping before the door Kahori had not used, he began making a catalogue of details. At a glance it looked like a normal hardwood door. No keypad was visible, yet the console made that unnecessary. If the other door was an emergency exit, then this door lead to Takumi and the others. No obvious signs of tampering were evident.
Still, after the near death experience earlier because he grabbed a door knob, Keisuke was being cautious. Every moment counted and he knew it as he double checked the jambs and wall. Nothing showed itself. "Hey, Kiyo, is it possible that this door isn't booby trapped? I don't see anything that looks off. Even the knob looks very normal."
In moments Asada was beside him also investigating the door jambs and door itself to see if there was a trap. "It does look clear from this side, however, we're talking a slaver here. The trap could be on the other side. There's no way to be sure until your hacker gets into the system. For all we know, opening this door might detonate some pretty harsh poisonous gas or worse, a strong acid that will kill anyone imprisoned below."
Lifting a hand to swipe through his spiky mane, Keisuke groaned. There was no way he could risk it. Before his hand got to his neck the door was flung open. A small girl was barreling into him before he understood the situation. Caught off guard as she collided with his crouched body they sprawled on the carpet.
Releasing his bat, Keisuke grabbed the squirming child. She began shrieking with a wild look on her face. The only thing Keisuke understood was the girl was yelling for Kahori. The rest was not Nihongo.
Kiyo grabbed the girl by the shoulder and forced her to face him. The other Yakuza witness that was still alive, dropped down and began speaking to the girl. She was babbling again but it seemed the other man understood her.
"Russell-sama, we have an emergency." The older Yakuza officer was screaming. Russell Singing Wolf popped back into the room a moment later. Keisuke found himself grabbing his lost bat and following the small girl. She ran down a set of stairs into a garish looking room. Other children were cowering beside a traditional table. Yet Keisuke had no time to pay attention to them. The other girl was racing between large privacy screens and between furnishings.
They hit another flight of stairs and the tiny child stopped dead in her tracks shaking like a leaf. Screams were reaching their ears. "The overseer's killing prisoners below. Let's get him taken out now." the older Yakuza officer bellowed and flung the door open. "Bring the girl because there will be at least one level below ground. She should know the way."
Keisuke grabbed the girl around the waist and hurdled down the staircase, the little girl shrieking and fighting his hold. He heard other heavy treads behind him as Keisuke plunged down to the next level. Holding cells straight out of some cops and robbers' movie lined the room. Bedlam and screaming made it impossible to hear anything his companions yelled. Several cell doors were ajar already. A man leapt from one cell lining the corridor with a bloody short sword in his hands. Keisuke dropped the little girl and charged at the man that was crouching in front of him. His bellow was louder than the screaming victims as he brought his bat forward to defend against the wakasashi blade.
A sharp pain ripped down the length of Keisuke's arms before he could dodge the second attacker that he had not seen on the other side of the cell block. Realizing too late that there was a second killer on this floor, they now caught Keisuke between two armed murderers with nowhere to go. For a split second Keisuke thought his reckless charge had cost him his life when the overseer behind him shuddered and fell over. The other man missed as he lunged at Keisuke, who slammed his body back into a cell with his bat barely parrying the blade.
Another loud report from a gun put the other man down. The little girl was pointing toward the end of the room and chattering at the older Yakuza officer again. She looked terrified and awed simultaneously. Keisuke started toward the direction she pointed as the room began to calm down. "Keisuke, matte!" A familiar voice brought him up short. Takeuchi's voice was again yelling at him. "Tak's over here! He needs an isha-san badly!"
Two cells down from his location Takeuchi's arm poked through the bars on the left side of the room. The youthful street racer looked haggard as Keisuke stopped in front of the cell. Shocking to see, Takeuchi was naked. So was Takumi while laying on a small bed. Several men pushed past Keisuke as Takeuchi stepped back.
"Yet Kwai." Takeuchi bellowed. The tiny girl slunk closer to the cell. "Keys, Yet Kwai. Get the keys!" Takeuchi was gesturing toward the lock in his cell door miming the act of turning a key inside the lock, speaking slowly to the child. "Fuck. I wish I knew Chinese right now!"
Keisuke turned on his heel, striding back to the dead men, and flipped over the one sprawled face down. This was the one that had come out of that side of the room's cell. A set of keys was in the dead man's hands. Tearing them free Keisuke returned to the cell and began shoving different keys into the lock. On the fifth try he got the right key. With a sigh of relief Keisuke yanked the door open. Not certain of how to deal with the tiny girl, Keisuke pushed her into the cell in front of him. "Takeuchi, make sure this door doesn't close."
Keisuke stepped next to Takumi's prone figure, and dropped onto his haunches. Before he could shake his beloved, Takeuchi was talking. "They drugged him and he had a really bad reaction to it, Keisuke-san. It's been five days. Tak keeps having seizures and stops breathing so I've been making him breathe again. That's the only reason he's alive right now. We have to get him to a hospital!"
"Ambulances are on the way, Takeuchi. I'm getting you out of here right now. Where's minasan else?"
"Down on the next level as far as I know. I'm only up here because that Kahori bitch wanted to remind Tak that she had no problem torturing me to make him obey." Takeuchi held up his hand. A heavy piece of fabric covered the misshapen remains. Keisuke felt like he was going to be violently sick.
"First things first. Let's get you out of here." Ignoring the pain that lanced down his profusely bleeding arm, Keisuke pushed his arm beneath Takumi's body and got a firm hold on his lover. Lifting Takumi off the bed he swivelled to face the cell door. In moments he was striding down the corridor toward the staircase. Yet Kwai stayed with them Keisuke noticed as they went up to the next level. Yet Kwai shot past him and Takeuchi. She was talking again, yet seemed much calmer than she had been.
Ryota stepped into the big gaudy room a few moments later. Keisuke was relieved to see him. "Hey, Ryota, there's a bunch of people in holding cells below this level. The stairs are that way. Take the keys and start opening their cells." Ryota came over and took the key ring from him. "Another set of keys is in the other dead man's hands below. You'll need them to open some cells."
"Looks like you got nailed, Keisuke-nī. Better have Sammy-chan look at that wound. The first ambulance just arrived. The Kēsatsu are also arriving. Should we let them open the cells? I mean, just in case they need to do it to keep us out of trouble?"
Keisuke frowned. He had not thought about it as he grabbed Takumi, yet Ryota had a point. "I hadn't thought about it, but you're probably right." Ryota nodded and headed back the way he had come at a trot.
"Where's Haha?" The sound of a youngster's yelling turned Keisuke's head before he got seven steps closer to the other door.
"Fuck. Mitani's cell was at the end by the stairs. Hikaru's got to be kept up here, Keisuke-san." Takeuchi was already stepping past him and headed toward the trio of children standing near the table. One had lighter colored hair and was shaking as he glared at Yet Kwai."
Something prompted Keisuke to follow Takeuchi toward the small group. Dread and anticipation were flooding his veins as Takeuchi stopped and slid down on his haunches, grabbing the shonen's arm. "Don't go downstairs, Hikaru. You can't go down there. It isn't safe for you."
Turning blazing dark blue eyes on Takeuchi, the youngster tried to jerk out of his hold. "Where's Haha? Kahori-sama hit the warning bell. I heard them go off. Where's Tung Tzu since he's the overseer on Haha's floor?"
Keisuke had no doubts as he looked at the glaring shonen. This was his and Akiho's musuko. "You have to listen to Takeuchi, Musuko. The Overseer was killing everyone below when I got down there and stopped him. Akiho's only chance is if we can get an emergency team downstairs in time."
The other child, another young girl began crying as her little hands covered her face. Yet Kwai patted the kimono wearing little girl. Hikaru's hands balled into fists as he looked up at him. Keisuke kept his voice calm yet firm. "Come with us for now. We need to find blankets and other things to put people in so they can get out of this prison, musuko."
"Haha said you would come for that man. Looks like she was right." Hikaru's voice was bitter.
"They told me your okasān ran away from the hospital. Otherwise, I would have saved you both when you were a newborn. I know you have no reason to believe me, but that's the truth. I found out about you and Akiho a few days ago, musuko." Keisuke did not evade the shonen's angry glare. Nor did he lie to the youngster. In all honesty this youngster had every right to hate his guts and Keisuke knew it.
Takeuchi spoke to the boy again. "Hikaru, Keisuke-san means everything he's saying. He has no reason to lie to you. If Keisuke-san says he had no idea you and your okasān was here, then he didn't know."
"Bring your little friends along, Hikaru. We need to get out of this hell hole and start getting you and the others checked out. Hopefully haha is still alive, but we really have to go now." With that command ringing in the air, Keisuke began walking again.
Takumi's dead weight was not as much as he remembered it being. In fact, Takumi looked to have lost a lot of weight during the few weeks he had been missing. At least his wounds looked to have been cared for during his imprisonment. Staggering down the final stairs into the courtyard a few minutes later, Keisuke was almost grateful for the chance to hand Takumi over to someone else's care. A kēsatsukan began asking questions almost immediately that Keisuke had to answer. The trio of children stayed with him as he explained that Yet Kwai only knew Chinese to the officer. He put a hand on Hikaru's shoulder telling the officer who the shonen was.
Most of the situation was turning into a blur as Hikaru stayed next to Keisuke's side. Several other ambulances were arriving. A medic was tending his arm, and he grabbed Hikaru's arm when they told him to get into the ambulance. He placed the child he had not known about in his lap as they headed toward the closest hospital. Where the day would end, Keisuke had no idea. All he knew was that Takumi was in serious trouble, and he had met his son that looked just like himself in childhood photographs.
