CHAPTER 49
Keisuke glanced down at Hikaru's upturned face as they stopped outside Takumi's room. After getting kicked out of Takumi's room during their last visit when Takumi first awoke, Keisuke was nervous about seeing his beloved. Takeuchi had declined coming along for this visit. Things would have been awkward with the other man present. They had many things to discuss in private now that Takumi was mending.
With every fiber of his soul, Keisuke hoped Takumi would be receptive to the plan he would be proposing. It was audacious, and almost impossible to pull off. The challenge would test them in ways they had never dreamed. Yet, if they won, nothing could ever stop them from reaching any goal they chose to pursue. Takumi might get angry about some things he had done to start the process rolling. However upset Takumi got, Keisuke felt he had to do the things he had done. Time was essential to making this plan work.
Pushing open the door, Keisuke led Hikaru toward Takumi. "Hey, how are you feeling, my own?" Keisuke asked as he stopped beside his younger mate's bed. Laying on his side, Takumi shifted his head to look at him. Far too pale, and haggard looking from his ordeal, Takumi dredged up a wan smile. Dropping a gentle kiss onto Takumi's forehead so as not to disturb the IV, Keisuke returned his smile.
"I'm remembering naze I hate catheters so much." Takumi's hesitant, deeply rich and soft voice was music to Keisuke's ears. Deprived of Takumi's presence for several weeks, Keisuke drank each sound in with a lighter heart.
"I understand completely." An amused undertone laced his own voice as Keisuke slid into the chair beside Takumi's bed. Wrapping Takumi in his arms was out of the question. Holding Takumi's hand would have to be enough for a few more days.
Hikaru tugged at his free hand with an expectant look. Furrowing his brow in confusion, Keisuke returned Hikaru's gaze. Making a small noise of frustration, Hikaru started climbing onto his leg to get into the chair with him. His expression clearing, Keisuke pulled the shonen up and let him settle in his lap.
"The very first time I saw Hikaru, it was like looking at a three dimensional picture of you when you were little, Keisuke. It really stunned me."
"I bet it did. I saw the resemblance immediately during our raid on that damned slaver's estate. I've been getting to know this little guy since I got you two out of that hell hole."
Takumi gave him a reproachful glare. "He's too young to be using that kind of language, Keisuke! Are you sharing Hikaru's time with, uhm, Mitani-san?" Having been in a coma, Takumi did not realize that people had been systematically slaughtered in the cells next to his own.
Hikaru answered. "Haha's dead because Kahori-sama hit the alarm. Chichi didn't know where to go when he showed up. He didn't get downstairs fast enough to save some people on your floor. The overseers almost got you and Itsi too. They were two cells down from yours when Chichi helped stop them." Listening to Hikaru destroyed the dregs of color Takumi had. Saucer-sized eyes locked with his. Takumi sought verification without words.
"Hikaru's seen murders before, sweetheart. He already knows that we're a couple, and plan on staying that way. I haven't lied to him about loving you and wanting to marry you even though he's only three. Hikaru already understands death, and sexual preferences better than many adults because of how Akiho raised him."
"Itsi and Chichi say we'll be good friends from now on, Tak. Chichi says you're my family too. Are you?" Hikaru asked as he leaned closer to Takumi.
Keisuke had to release Takumi's hand and catch the youngster before he got caught in the IV line. "Careful, Hikaru. That IV has to stay in Takumi's arm. If you tug on it, even if it's an accident, you'll hurt Takumi."
Before Takumi recovered from the kodomo's announcement, Keisuke spoke with conviction to his younger mate after settling Hikaru in his lap again. "We're the only family he has, my own. I can't let my ryōshin raise him after they hid him from me. Finding out about Hikaru while tracking you down really hit me hard. When I confronted my ryōshin on the phone, they admitted knowing about Akiho's pregnancy and hiding it from me all along. Weird as it feels to be a ryōshin, I can't ignore that Hikaru's my musuko."
"Mitani said you knew about Hikaru, and didn't care. I'm glad she was wrong. I couldn't believe you abandoned your kodomo. Mitani-san had very bad opinions of you. She said you were cold blooded, and worse. Seeing you taking your musuko's well being seriously is a relief." Takumi answered, looking unexpectedly sad.
"Before I started racing with Aniki, I was a cold-blooded bastard that didn't care about anything, or anyone. Akiho told you the truth. Changing as much as I have happened because I met you, sweetheart. Before you, I had no reason to let go of my hate, or my hardcore mistrust. Anyway, Obāsan, Ojīsan, and Aniki agree with me that my ryōshin shouldn't raise Hikaru. They're going to help us get custody. . . . That is, if you're willing to accept him?"
Heartbreaking pain was evident in his face and voice as Takumi answered. "Courts in this nation will deny you custody if I'm with you, Lover. Hikaru has to come first. He can't possibly take care of himself, and we both know it. Accepting him isn't the issue here. Society condemning same gender relationships is. As much as I don't want to say this, you have to choose Hikaru."
Fury tainted his tongue as Keisuke answered. "Choosing between you and Hikaru isn't going to happen, Takumi. Believe me, we can find a way to stay together, and keep Hikaru, my own heart. I'll fight like hell to keep you both, and win. I refuse to back down just because narrow-minded assholes say that we're wrong for loving each other. Will you stay beside me and help make this work?"
"I'll do everything I can to make sure Hikaru has a better life. He deserves to be happy. First, we have to find out the odds of success. If it becomes public knowledge that we're together, I don't see any chance for Hikaru to stay with you. After that, I'll know how to answer you." A tightening expression warned Keisuke that Takumi's mind was already made up.
"The public already knows. We're currently the biggest news topic in the nation, my own. I hope you don't mind that we're in the midst of moving out of my ryōshin's house. Obāsan's taken charge of packing our things, and getting our new home ready."
"Nani?" Takumi struggled to sit up straight. Putting Hikaru down, Keisuke got up, grabbing Takumi's wrist and helped him. Pushing a couple of pillows behind Takumi's back, the younger man resettled. "Naze are you having Masako-san take charge of moving our things? I don't understand, Keisuke. If we have a place together, Hikaru's going to be placed in your ryōshin's care no matter how hard you fight!"
"Look, I know it's sudden, but it has to be this way. Right now I'm angry enough that I'd strangle Okasān. I can't return to that house, or be anywhere near her. This time, Okasān crossed the wrong line. The one that has paid the heaviest price is Hikaru. Okasān always hated Akiho, so she turned her back on Hikaru out of spite. I can't forgive that. Nobody in the Takahashi or Ogino family will forgive that for quite some time, Takumi." Keisuke's gaze never wavered as he spoke his honest feelings.
"I understand that you're mad. Yukiko-san's always bossing me around, so I know you've got reasons to feel like this. It's hard to believe that she could purposefully lie about you having a musuko, though. Ryuunosuke isn't the kind of person to do that either. I can't wrap my head around it, Keisuke. Something about this doesn't seem right."
Picking Hikaru back up, Keisuke took a deep breath and began. "Okasān said it was the kēsatsu's job to find Akiho, not theirs. Their main excuse is that the isha san in charge of Akiho's pregnancy said Hikaru would never survive to be born after Akiho vanished from the hospital. He ignored that she was giving birth in five weeks when he made the claim. To keep me from being hurt if Hikaru was a still born, they refused to tell me I had a kodomo on the way. Okasān also admitted that she thought I'd go after Akiho, and marry her. After being shot, there was no chance of me marrying Akiho. I would have tracked her down to save Hikaru's life though."
"You told me that life so wounded Mitani-san that she was insane. After meeting her, I understand naze you said that. She hated to leave her cell. Nobody ever locked it either. Mitani-san never tried to escape. She could have left with Hikaru at any time." Takumi shook his head with pursed lips. "All she had to do was grab clothes, and walk out the front door."
Deciding it was time to change subjects, Keisuke spoke. "I need you to sign onto my accounts, and everything else I have tomorrow morning, my own."
Before he could finish his thought, Takumi was snarling. "You know how I feel about that. If anything, my being on your accounts will make it harder to get custody of Hikaru!" Takumi, for all that he was so weak and vulnerable, still had tenacity.
"During the rescue, I killed one of Kahori's guards. I have to go to some hearings because of it. I need to know that Hikaru's being cared for properly if I do go to prison, my own heart. You having control of my accounts will make it easier for you to keep custody of Hikaru. You'll have the finances to take care of him until I get out."
"Kami-sama. Keisuke, tell me your joking! Tell me you didn't just say that you killed someone, yoroshiku."
"Would you prefer me dead, and you stuck in that hell hole for your own final days? I hit the bastard hard in the lower ribs with a damaged metal bat. His ribs shattered into his lung when I dropped him. He had already killed a couple of people that had volunteered to help get you, our teammates, and Hikaru out of there. I didn't kill him on purpose. We had no idea just how many people we would end up rescuing when we made our simultaneous raids." Keisuke's hands knotted into fists as the memory of the cell rows surfaced.
"Uh oh, Chichi's mad again." Hikaru inserted as he clambered up onto Takumi's bed and settled in a spot where he would not accidentally hurt Takumi. The silent, gape jawed man was staring at him as if he had not noticed. The little shonen tugged at Takumi's unfettered arm to get his attention. "Itsi told Chichi how come you got so sick. He's been mad since."
Long moments passed before Takumi's eyes unglued from his and he looked at Hikaru. "Nani did you say?"
"Itsi told Chichi 'bout Kahori-sama hurting you. He said Kahori-sama made you drink tea that made you sick. Chichi's mad at Kahori-sama 'cause she did that to you. She's always been mean, so Chichi hates her."
"I can't blame your otosān there, Hikaru. Kahori has done very bad things to people that didn't deserve to be hurt. Still, killing someone is a very bad thing to do, even when it's an accident." Takumi's tone was grave as he looked at the small shonen.
"Someone has to stop the sick bitch, my own. She escaped during the raid. The Kēsatsu were almost worthless when I was waiting for them to act. No matter how valuable every scrap of information I gave them, they wouldn't do anything about your abductors. I got fed up once I realized they have so many rules that they can't do anything before they finish tons of redundant checks. I'm glad I called my old brotherhood together, and they helped me kick this drug ring's ass a second time. We barely got you back in time."
"How can you say that, Keisuke?! You're facing prison because of doing something so unbelievably stupid! How could you be glad about that? This will cost you any chance you might have had of getting custody of Hikaru too!"
Angry with Takumi's hard toned censure, Keisuke snapped, "Kahori ordered that minasan in both her prisons were to be murdered and dumped whenever she gave the word, Takumi. She already knew the Kēsatsu were closing in on her operation. Her plan was to sell off as many people as she could to a Chinese slaver, and flee the country. The nightly news reports have told the public that there are records of similar mass murders she's committed in the past. The death toll for her slaves is thirty-one people this time. Five of them were Hikaru's age. Her guards killed nine of my friends, including Akimoto on top of that number. How long do you think Hikaru would have lasted if I hadn't acted when I did? She even killed Arai and his younger onēchan in the most brutal way she could think of, and dumped their bodies offshore. Their remains washed up on a beach. Do you know Kahori had one hundred and forty-three people beside you and Takeuchi rotting in chains at that one property?"
Takumi looked at his hands, obviously distressed. "Itsuke mentioned that there was another cell block beneath our floor. He told me the cells were cinder-block with really narrow doors. He said we were in a huge cell compared to the cells downstairs."
"We found two levels of slave quarters below yours, Takumi. The second facility had one hundred and seventeen people packed into tiny filthy cells that were just like the ones in the mansion she was holding you in. Kahori has half-starved most of the people from both of her prisons, and some are in worse shape than you can imagine. Fumihiro had gangrene in his wounds. The isha sans had to do emergency surgery to save his life. He's going to be in this hospital for several months."
Takumi paled as he listened to the facts Keisuke was giving him. Keisuke refused to give him time to speak as he continued to hammer the situation home. "Kahori hurt you, Hikaru, and several of my friends. I can't forgive her for all the hell that she has put minasan through. Takeuchi's missing two fingers. He'll be the first to tell you that he got off lucky, my own. Knowing that Kahori escaped royally pisses me off. Unless the authorities get her into custody soon, she'll do the same thing again. Stopping her is vital. I'm tempted to go after her just to make sure she never hurts anyone else."
"Don't you dare, Keisuke! Hunting down Kahori will only make life worse for Hikaru. You will go to prison if you hunt her down. You have no excuse other than revenge at that point. That's also abandoning your musuko! Mitani-san accused you of abandoning Hikaru every time I saw her. Is that nani you want Hikaru to believe about you? Stay with Hikaru and take good care of him so the courts won't take him away from you!"
"You know I won't ever abandon either one of you. Takumi! That's an unfair comment if I've ever heard one! Still, we can't let Kahori do more inhuman things to people! That bitch has to answer for her crimes!"
Takumi barked with surprising strength. "Listen to me, Keisuke! Do you remember when I told you I knew I'd see Itsuke again, even though I couldn't explain how I knew it?"
Furrowing his brow, Keisuke nodded. Takumi had a strange way of knowing things that defied logical explanation, the same as some of his abnormal driving skills. More than once Keisuke had teased his amber-haired mate about being psychic. Baffling as some things Takumi said were, he was often right. Taking a deep breath, the blond fought down his irritation. "Hai. You were right about everything you said that night. Nazi bring that up right now? I'll always believe you if you say you know something you can't explain."
"The night we went to Akagi, I knew something was going to happen that would lead me straight to Itsuke. Somehow I knew that you had to leave me there and train. Otherwise, you would die from having your throat ripped out. Preventing that from happening was more important than anything else to me, Keisuke. Everything inside me tells me that you hunting for that sick and twisted onna means Hikaru and I will never see you alive again! Believe me, onegai!? You have to leave Kahori alone, Lover. She'll pay for everything that she's done to people much faster if you don't interfere."
"Naze didn't you say anything if you knew that night? If you knew things were going to go sour, naze didn't you tell me? I would've gotten you the hell out of there before you were attacked." Keisuke demanded as shock and hurt took hold.
"I wanted to tell you everything I felt so much it hurt. Saying anything would mean you dying because there was no escaping the attack. Kahori wouldn't have needed Matsimoto or Itsuke alive any longer. The only way to save minasan was for me to keep my mouth shut. You know I can't explain these weird knowings I get. They don't even make sense to me most of the time. Something told me to keep my mouth shut, or you would die! Your death isn't something I can handle because I love you, baka!"
Hikaru placed his tiny hand on Takumi's arm. Facing his new ryōshin, Hikaru tilted his head and spoke. "Don't be mad at Chichi."
"I'm not angry with your otosān, Hikaru. I'm terrified. Your hot-headed otosān's going to get himself killed, or worse some day if he doesn't calm down. I have to keep him from doing something we'll all regret for the rest of our lives." Passionate, painful emotions were vibrating in Takumi's voice as he looked down at Hikaru. Beyond a doubt, Takumi believed every word he was saying. The effect on Hikaru and himself was profound Keisuke discovered.
The small shonen nodded with unnatural seriousness. "We'll keep Chichi safe. I promise to be a big help."
"I suddenly have the feeling that I'm going to get ganged up on for the rest of my life by you two." Keisuke found himself saying in a half-joking tone.
Takumi and Hikaru both faced him. It was Takumi that answered as he placed a hand on Hikaru's small shoulder. "Only if we all get very lucky, Keisuke. First, we have to figure out how we're ever going to get custody of Hikaru now that our relationship's public knowledge. Finding out whether the court will send you to prison affects Hikaru's future in ways I can't begin to guess. With you facing charges, you may never get custody of your musuko. After we have answers to those questions, we have to get the rest of our lives sorted out. You don't have time to chase after Kahori, Lover. Focus on things that matter. If you want me involved in winning this fight, you have to promise to let Kahori's escape go."
Keisuke grabbed Takumi's hand in his own. Unhappy that Takumi had known of his immanent capture yet chose to keep it hidden, Keisuke felt betrayed. However, he was also grateful that his beloved was still alive. "I hear you, my own heart. Things will definitely be rough for a couple months. Getting Hikaru away from my ryōshin takes priority. We have plenty of backing to succeed. In fact, from everything I've heard, most of our fans want us together. A strange twist that we can figure out how to use it to advantage, don't you think?"
"Where did you hear that, Keisuke?" Takumi was frowning again.
"The same place Kahori heard it, Takumi. From our fans' web chat sites. There's a lot of support for us being together, and it's getting stronger every day. You probably don't know yet, but a huge candle light vigil has been going on across the nation for you over the last ten days. The news hit the airwaves that you were in the critical condition unit at this hospital. The Kēsatsu are having a hell of a time keeping the press, and our biggest fans away."
"How did that happen?" Takumi's voice was plaintive.
"Remember, we're famous, Takumi. That's not going to change so get used to it already. Several of my gangster friends have spoken out about doing the right thing no matter the personal cost to the press. Two came out and said they were swingers and thanked society for making them tough enough to do things the authorities can't handle. Fans have been driving into Tokyo in team convoys for the last three days. They're entrenching to show their support for everything I've done, Takumi."
"My gut says there's something you haven't told me yet." His mate looked thoroughly harassed and sounded suspicious.
"I faced the media the day before yesterday. During their questions, someone brought up the street rumors that led to your abduction. I told them that the rumors had everything mixed up. The public knows that I love you and am determined to convince you to spend your life with me since I realized how I felt."
"Kami-sama, Keisuke? Have you completely lost your mind?! If you had any chance of getting Hikaru, it depended on keeping your mouth shut about us!"
"Admitting that I love you enough to take a bullet meant for you got results. Telling minasan that I didn't want to fall for you, but did anyway, is the truth. Telling the public that you mean everything to me was necessary, Takumi. Minasan knows I'll risk everything to save you because I love you. It also forced Oyaji-san and Tsuchia-sama to accept our relationship, and back our being together."
"Oyaji's here?"
"Hai. He admitted that he was wrong, Takumi. He said that he hopes we get the chance to be happy once my going public settles down. Oyaji-san's finally behind us, my own. I know you'll see him later today, or tomorrow at the latest."
Looking down at Hikaru, Takumi sighed. "Remind me to never let your otosān out of my sight for longer than a working shift ever again. He obviously gets himself into way too much trouble whenever I'm not around. Deal?"
Hikaru smiled up at his exasperated step ryōshin. "I'll help Chichi be good."
Bemused by the pair in front of him, Keisuke wondered how things would turn out. With a heavy sigh, Keisuke knew he was outnumbered now. Hard as it was to win a fight with Takumi, it would be even harder to look a three-year-old in the eye and deny doing anything Takumi felt he should not do. Having a family to gang up on him was unsettling. Somehow Keisuke knew he would adjust to the newest changes in his life.
