Author’s Note: This chapter came out surprisingly fast due to the fact that my writing helps me get through my troubles. It’s my only escape from reality, and I need to escape as often as possible. Dee and Ryo are my fantasy world, and I’m so proud of everything I’ve written, even if it isn’t the best piece of work out there. I just hope my writing can continue to help me cope with everything. Well, anyway, enough of my problems. Here’s the next chapter. Enjoy!

XZanayu: Don’t worry, Ryo should return to Dee within the next few chapters! Thanks for reading, and thanks for the reviews you’ve been leaving! ^_^
Megan: Thanks for continuing to read! I should be utilizing your idea in the next chapter, so beware! ^_~

Chapter Five
The sharp ringing of the telephone brought Dee out of his slumber. Rubbing his eyes wearily, he saw that it was 9 p.m. ‘When did I fall asleep?’ Dee wondered as he blindly reached for the cordless phone and hit the button to take the call. "Hello?"
"Hey, Dee, it’s me."
A grin spread across Dee’s face at the familiar voice. "Hey, baby, how’re you doing? Everything okay over there?"
"Yes, everything’s fine, Dee. You sound a little tired…did I wake you?" Ryo asked, his voice portraying a hint of guilt.
Dee yawned. "Yeah, but don’t worry about it. If it had been anyone else, they’d be added to my list of people to murder," Dee said lightly.
Ryo laughed softly. "I know. I’m lucky that you love me, or else I’d probably be dead by now."
"You’ve got that right, baby," Dee said as he heard a soft whine from Ryo, causing him to burst out laughing. "Aw, come on, Ryo, you know that’s not true. You’re too damn sexy to kill."
All was silent for a few moments, then Dee turned the conversation to a serious note. "Berkeley hasn’t been hassling you, has he?"
Ryo hesitated before replying, "No, Dee. Don’t worry."
Dee sighed and stood, feeling the need to pace around the room anxiously. "Ryo, I can read you like a book, and I know when you’re not being completely honest with me. Tell me the truth."
Ryo took a deep breath, then said, "Well, he did give me a few suggestive looks earlier, but nothing more. I won’t let him intimidate me, Dee."
Dee felt his fist slam down onto a nearby table as he couldn’t help the rage that was building up inside of him. "God damn it, Ryo! Why do you let that asshole come onto you? You know he’s after you! Fuck!" Dee yelled.
Ryo kept his voice down despite the urge to yell right back at Dee, but he knew that would only cause even more problems, and he sure as hell didn’t need that right now. "Look, Dee, I made a promise. I’m not going to break it. You’re supposed to trust me, remember?"
Dee sighed and ran a hand through his bangs, frowning. "I know, baby. I do trust you. I just want to make sure you’re safe."
"I am safe, Dee," Ryo reassured him. "Look, I should be home within a couple of days. Berkeley and I are going undercover to meet the gang either tomorrow night or the night after. As soon as we have enough evidence against them, they’ll be behind bars, and I’ll be back home."
The black-haired man breathed a sigh of relief. "That’s good to know. I want you back here soon. I’m so lost without you, Ryo. I need you here."
"And I need you too, Dee. From the looks of things, we should be back the day after tomorrow," Ryo said, letting a small smile cross his face.
"Well, I’m off tomorrow, so maybe I’ll just sleep all day and then Friday will get here faster. Then I’ll have you back in my arms and we can celebrate," Dee said slyly, putting much emphasis on the last word.
Ryo laughed. "I think I’d better save my strength for you, love."
"Good thinking," Dee replied.
The two became silent once more. Then it was Ryo who reluctantly broke the silence. "Sorry, Dee, but I’d better get going. I need to rest up and be prepared if something should tplacplace tomorrow."
Dee sighed. "You’re right. It’s best you get some rest. I wish you the best of luck, and just promise me you’ll be careful."
"I will, Dee. I love you."
"I love you too, baby. Call me tomorrow?"
"You know I will. Night, Dee."
"Goodnight, my love."
As they both hung up, Dee couldn’t chase away the horrible feeling in the pit of his stomach. For some strange reason, Dee didn’t think everything would go as smoothly as he and Ryo hoped it would.
Back in New Jersey, Ryo couldn’t chase away the nausea he felt. Thinking it was just due to his nerves, Ryo lay down and tried to get some sleep, hoping it would pass when he woke up the next day.
****
Dee tossed and turned in his bed, trying his best to fall asleep, but finding he just couldn’t. Every few minutes, he would glance at the clock, thinking hours had already passed, but found to his dismay that only 3 or 4 minutes passed at a time. Sighing in defeat, Dee knew he wouldn’t get to sleep anytime soon. It was already midnight, and Dee had been trying to fall asleep for nearly four hours.
Dee got up and stretched, then made his way to the kitchen, hoping to find something to calm his nerves. He opened the refrigerator and peered in, hoping they had some soda in the house or something. His wandering eyes came across a bottle of wine sitting on the top shelf. Dee smiled; he had bought the wine earlier this afternoon for when Ryo returned home. After some thinking, Dee decided he could always pick up another bottle tomorrow. He reached for the wine, figuring a nice glass of wine would do the trick of steadying his nerves.
Sitting on the couch, Dee poured himself a glass and almost instantly downed it, loving the burning feeling the alcohol produced as it made it’s way down his throat. He hadn’t felt this great in so long…it was so great to finally be at ease with everything. He finally found a solution to all the problems that were going on recently.
After his fourth glass, Dee felt the alcohol start to blur his senses, and he found he didn’t mind it one bit. In fact, it actually made him feel content. Before he knew it, the bottle had been emptied, and Dee found himself elated, his troubles far behind him. He was far from drunk, but his mind became numb as the sleep he thought he’d never achieve took over his body.
****
Ryo woke in the middle of the night, sweating profusely. He took a deep breath, and instantly regretted it, for an uncontrollable wave of nausea overtook him, and he jumped up, racing to the bathroom as fast as he could. Before he knew it, his stomach had been quickly emptied of all of its contents. After he was sure he was done, Ryo leaned back against the bathtub, feeling drained of all strength. That was when the sd wad wave of nausea hit, and Ryo found himself vomiting once again, until there was nothing left, causing him to start dry heaving. Ryo rested his head against the lid of the toilet, finding the metal to be very cool underneath his skin. He moaned, wondering what had caused this sudden sickness.
The noise from the bathroom had startled Berkeley, who rushed to the bathroom, wondering what all the commotion was about. He saw Ryo practically hugging the toilet seat, looking very pale.
Berkeley knelt by Ryo’s side, brushing his damp bangs away from his forehead, not liking the slight warmth there. "What happened, Ryo?" Berkeley asked.
Ryo swallowed hard. "Not…not sure. I just feel like shit."
Berkeley nodded. "Seems you have a stomach virus or something of the sort. Do you know of anything that may have triggered it?"
Ryo somehow found the strength to shake his head. "No…I have no clue."
Berkeley reached for a cup lying on the sink, filling it with water and handing it to Ryo, hoping he could at least keep something down. After a few moments passed without incident, Berkeley decided Ryo was safe for now. He helped Ryo stand and led him back to the bed, forcing him to lie down.
"Get some rest, MacLean. We need you in top shape for tomorrow. I’m not going to let you ruin this for us. I’ll go into the extra hotel room across from us, just in case you’re contagious…thank goodness it’s vacant. I sure as hell don’t want to catch what you have. See you tomorrow." With that, Berkeley left, slamming the door behind him, making Ryo wince.
Ryo started to shake as the tears fell from his eyes. "God, I’m going to mess everything up…if I’m still sick by tomorrow, I’ll cost us big time. I know Berkewillwill make me go, no matter what. Hell, if I were dying, he’d probably drag my hospital bed along with him just to nab those assholes." Deciding he needed Dee to comfort him, Ryo somehow managed to reach for his cell phone and hit the speed dial for Dee’s phone, praying his fiancee would answer.
****
Dee jumped when he heard his cell phone ringing. Wondering who would be calling him at this ungodly hour, he glance at the caller i.d. and became startled when he saw it was Ryo. ‘Why is Ryo calling me at this hour? Shouldn’t he be asleep? Oh, God…something must be wrong!’ Dee started to panic as he answered the phone. "Hello? Ryo?" Dee heard crying on the other end of the phone. "Ryo, what’s wrong? Tell me!"
"Oh…God…Dee…" Ryo cried, his breath hitching with every word. "I…feel…so…horrible…!"
Dee sat up. "Why, Ryo?! What happened?!"
"I’m sick…Dee…been vomiting…have a fever…can’t sleep…so scared…" Ryo managed to say between sobs.
Dee swore to himself. He knew with Ryo’s luck that something like this would be bound to happen. ‘And I bet that asshole isn’t helping him one bit,’ Dee thought angrily to himself, clenching his teeth. Before he got too angry, however, he knew he had to calm Ryo down. "Ryo, baby, just try to calm down, okay? Take a few deep breaths…nice and slow." When he heard Ryo calm considerably, he continued. "Ryo, as much as I hate Berkeley, please tell me he tried to help comfort you."
Another cry escaped Ryo’s lips. "He…he won’t come near me…Dee…he’s afraid he’ll catch what I have…doesn’t want to mess the case up," Ryo said quietly.
Dee felt his muscles tense. That man really was a bastard…there wasn’t any other word to describe him. "What do you mean, Ryo? He didn’t try to help you get better?"
"N-no…won’t even sleep in the same room…"
Dee swore. "God, what a selfish asshole. Okay, just listen to me, Ryo. Make sure you have a pitcher of cool water near your bed through the night, just so there will always be something in your system…try to keep the water down as long as possible. If you’re able, take some aspirin to help reduce your fever, but don’t take any aspirin if you feel nauseous. That might make it worse. When was the last time you vomited?"
Ryo hiccuped. "Maybe a half-hour ago…not sure…"
Dee frowned. "Do you still feel nauseous?"
"Not as much," Ryo replied, feeling the tears run down his cheeks once more.
"Okay, baby, then try to take the aspirin. Is it just the vomiting and fever, or are you showing any other symptoms?" Dee asked, concerned for his fiancee’s health.
"No…just those," Ryo replied, his voice shaky.
"All right. Just try to drink plenty of water and take the aspirin. If you still feel nauseous, continue vomiting, or if your fever gets worse, don’t hesitate to call me. Okay?"
Ryo swallowed the lump in his throat. "Okay, Dee. Thanks. Wish you were here…"
"So do I, baby. So do I. Please, just get some rest and take care of yourself. Call me tomorrow mornand and let me know how you're feeling, okay? Sweet dreams. Love you, and please feel better," Dee told Ryo, concern clealacilacing his tone.
"Love you…too…Dee…talk to you tomorrow," Ryo replied as he hung up the phone. After doing as Dee suggested, Ryo lay down and drew his knees to his chest, trying his best to fall asleep, frightened by what tomorrow might bring.
****
Dee lay there in the dark, deeply worried for Ryo. From the it it sounded, he had somehow caught some nasty stomach virus, and knew it was no simple thing. He knew Ryo wouldn’t be well enough by tomorrow to go out on that case. And to think that Berkeley was acting the way he was! He could have at least helped Ryo by giving him some aspirin or something to settle his stomach, but it looked like Berkeley just left Ryo there to suffer.
"God damn it, Berkeley," Dee said aloud, "if you let anything happen to Ryo, I swear to God I’ll fucking murder you, burn your body, and piss on the ashes. Just you watch me. God, Ryo, I’m sorry I’m not there. You need me now more than ever."
That night, Dee cried himself back to sleep, worrying immensely over his love, wishing he could ease his suffering in any way possible.
