Part Five: The Sheriff Fails

�Oh, my god, Gojyo!� Goku exclaimed.

That was it, everyone was now officially awake. Sanzo�s eyes slowly opened. He squinted at the morning sun. Fighting? This early? I will kill them. He turned his head and saw Hakkai grinning and Goku pointing at Gojyo, mouth wide-open . Gojyo was sitting against a tree with Thea cradled in his arms. Thea yawned and blinked her eyes open.

�Get off it already, monkey. You know I�m not like that.� Gojyo glared at him.

Goku scratched his head and mumbled. �I don�t know, you ARE a perv.�

Thea crawled out of his arms and stood on the ground, stretching.

Gojyo stood up and pointed at Goku. �I�m NOT that KIND of perv, and you damn well know it.�

Sanzo grumbled. �It is too damn early to start this shit.�

Hakuryuu puffed out a small flame, re-starting the fire, and Hakkai began brewing the coffee.

Sanzo looked at Thea. He noticed something catch the light around her ankle. She wore a silver anklet. There was a solitary crystal dangling on it; it was violet.

Sanzo accepted the coffee cup from Hakkai. He sniffed the coffee and took a sip. He looked at Thea. �Where�s Jorja?�

Thea whipped her head around at the sound of the familiar name. �I don�t know, exactly.�

Sanzo watched as she sniffed the air and her sheriff costume suddenly appeared around her. She scanned the group and with her best fake drawl, �Ya�ll juuuust sit tight and keep da home fires burn�in. Let da law take care o�dis.�

She turned sharply and began to walk off.

Goku sniffed the air. He stood up with a jolt.

Sanzo looked at Goku. �What is it?�

Goku scanned the area. �Demons.�

�Damn it! I can�t even get a cup of coffee! This shit is wearing thin,� he said as he checked the ammo in his gun.

Gojyo looked at Thea walking off. �Thea come back here!�

She ignored him as she kept walking. Nobody tells me what to do.

Gojyo started out after her. Goku followed. Hakkai followed Goku, and Sanzo put his free hand against his forehead. Damn it! He stormed off after them. Why can�t we wait until they get to us?

Gojyo rounded a tree and saw Thea go into her �halt pose�.

�Halt! Who goes there? Be ye friend or be ye foe?� Thea said with out a waver in the speech impediment voice.

A pack of demons emerged from their hiding places. One demon spoke up, �I bet they�re tender at that age.� He slithered toward her and grabbed her extended wrist.

Gojyo conjured his weapon as his companions joined him.

Thea�s eyes narrowed, �Touwch me again, scum, and I will kill you.�

Gojyo slowly cut his eyes toward Sanzo. �Oh, my god, she�s you.�

Sanzo sneered. �I was never that annoying.� She�s got moxie, I�ll give her that.

Goku watched her with intensity. �Do you think she has what it takes to back it up?�

Hakkai looked at the little girl slowly being surrounded by demons. �I can�t believe we are taking the time to debate.�

The demon squeezed her wrist and jerked her. With her free hand she conjured a ball of violet chi and pushed it into his groin. With a yell, the demon vanished.

Sanzo relaxed his stance and decided to watch. This should be interesting.

Hakkai let loose his chi ball and it disintegrated one of the demons.

Goku swung his staff and cut through a demon�s midsection.

Gojyo stepped behind Thea and swung his staff over her head. He sliced through two.

Thea huffed, �I told you, let the law take care of this. I�m da sherriff, not you.� A little face full of determination stared up at him.

Gojyo smirked. �There�s too many Thea. You need help.�

Thea conjured a ball with both her hands and threw it at two demons, quickly dispatching them. �I need no one�s help.�

Sanzo scanned the area, there were four demon�s left. �Goku.�

Goku looked at Sanzo over his shoulder and saw Sanzo motioning for him. Goku walked over to him. Sanzo looked into the man-child�s golden eyes. �Stay here.�

�But, Sanzoooo...�

�Stay here,� he said more forcefully. �Hakkai, back off. Let�s see what she can do.�

Hakkai took a few steps back, but remained ready.

Sanzo looked at Gojyo towering over the girl. �Gojyo ---�

�Nothin� doin� Sanzo,� Gojyo interrupted him.

Sanzo knew he wasn�t going to get Gojyo to move. �Just defense, then.�

�Maybe,� Gojyo replied, shifting his stance.

A demon swung at Gojyo and Gojyo moved his staff to block. By the time his staff met the point of intersection with the demon blade, the demon was gone in a violet haze.

Hakkai noticed that her sheriff costume had not wavered the entire time. Such control �.so young?

Thea looked at the three remaining demons. �Don�t worry, Gojyo. I�ll protect you.�

Gojyo laughed, �Gee, thanks.�

She took two steps and glared at one of the demons. She pointed a little finger up at the demon. �Leave, and don�t come back to my town.�

The demon sneered at her.

�You�re making me angry.� Little Thea gritted her teeth.

The demon let out a low laugh. Another demon decided this was his opportunity to strike. He crept up from an angle behind her and reared his arm back. He saw Thea�s shoulder twitch and quickly left this plane of existence. �Ok, now I�m angwry.�

Thea jutted her hand out and grabbed the demon�s leg. The demon dropped screaming in pain. She glared at him; watching the demon drop and writhe. His body took on a violet hue and vanished. She turned sharply and placed her gaze on the remaining demon. She pushed out a fist, turned her palm up and slowly bent and extended her index finger. �I�m not running all over this place chasing you. C�mere and die like a man.�

Sanzo looked at Hakkai. �Not safe for her to go home alone at night?� He finished with a �Hmmph.�

The demon took a few steps back and scanned the group. �What the hell are you?�

She took a solid step toward him. �I�m da sheriff. I�m Thea �da one �.da only.� She threw a ball at him. �And you�re dead.�

Thea wiped her hands as Hakkai yelled out. Hakuryuu heard the yell and took off from the campsite, determined to find Hakkai.

Everyone quickly turned their heads. They had been so involved with watching Thea and trying to figure her out that no one noticed the demons that had come up behind them.

Hakkai was smashed face-first against a tree. Leaves fluttered down as a few small branches fell. A demon held him by the back of his neck as he shoved a spear through Hakkai�s back. The blade slid under Hakkai�s left shoulder blade and through his ribs. Hakkai was pinned against the tree. Hakkai�s body went limp. The demon removed his hand, leaving the spear.

Sanzo squeezed off several rounds from his gun. Goku swung his staff. Gojyo whirled his staff around him and the crescent blade quickly dispatched several foes.

Thea walked over to Hakkai and looked at him. She saw the small dark green circle in his shirt around the spear. �I didn�t protect him,� she whispered as she heard him panting. �I�m a bad sheriff.� Her sheriff costume faded. She began to cry.

Sanzo, Gojyo and Goku dispatched the surprise attackers without difficulty or games. Sanzo scanned the area as Gojyo ran to Hakkai. Hakuryuu hovered in the air, softly peeping.

Hakkai was rapidly panting. His world was black and filled with muted sounds. All he knew was that he was in serious pain, and could not get a good breath.

Gojyo, Goku, and Sanzo looked at each other. They seemed to be waiting for Hakkai to jump into action. The realization sunk into all three at the same time. HE�S the healer. As they looked at the limp body of the comrade that faithfully ran to their side whenever they were hurt, they felt powerless. Everyone of them felt completely and totally impuissant. Hakkai was always there for them, from minor cuts to major wounds, without fail he was there. Gojyo reached up for the spear.
