Chapter 5: At the Dojo"Kenshin!" Kamiya Kaoru, the dojo master, shouted from the steps, brows creased and meeting at the center of nosebridge. She had seen the beautiful woman who accompanied the red-haired swordsman and Sanosuke and her jealous nature acted up again.
"Ah, Kaoru-dono," Kenshin greeted, his tone calm. "We ran into a little trouble today. We need Genzai-sensei's ministrations." He and Sano reached the steps of the dojo and both of them laid down Kino's unconscious form on the wooden floor. Megumi followed them and stood silently to one side.
Kaoru was looking her up and down, eating her up with her eyes. She noticed that the other woman was older than her by a few years but she was very beautiful. There was something deep and tragic in her dark brown eyes that held hints of gold, making them look almost luminous. Her skin was pale like ivory but it looked soft and pliant. She had a great body too, waist narrow and breasts high, even under the confines of her robe. Kaoru became so engrossed with her study of the other woman so that she did not hear Sano speak at first.
"What?" She asked when Sano was all but shouting in her ear.
"I said, where's Genzai-sensei?"
"Did somebody call my name?" The old doctor suddenly appeared in the doorway. He was followed by two tiny girls with wide, bright eyes. They were Kaoru's dependents, the doctor's grandchildren -- Ayame and Suzume.
"Oh good, you're here, Genzai-sensei" Kenshin said.
Spotting the unconscious man on the floor, the old doctor quickly bent down. "What happened?" He inquired softly.
"The lady here thinks it's poison but we can't be sure," Sano replied.
A minute later, Dr. Genzai confirmed Megumi's diagnosis. He quickly ordered Kaoru to go out and look for the herbs he has listed to make the antidote. Kenshin busied himself by fetching water from the well and boiling them. The doctor continued to minister over Kino who was slipping in and out of consciousness. Left with nothing else to do, Sano took Ayame and Suzume to the backyard to distract them from what was happening. Already, the younger one, Suzume was whimpering a little when she saw the alarm written on Dr. Genzai's face. The older one, Ayame was not as affected but her face was sober.
When the silence for a few more minutes, Sano suddenly seized on an idea. He grinned and said invitingly to the two girls, "Who wants to ride on my back?"
Suzume's eyes instantly lit up and she was first to declare, "Me! Me! Wanna ride Sano's back!"
Sano chuckled and placed himself on a crouching position to allow the little girl access to his lean back. "All right. Careful now, Suzume-chan," he said as he stood up. Then he turned to the other girl, patting her head gently. "You're next, Ayame-chan."
Suzume was having the time of her life, the events of only a few minutes ago quickly forgotten. She humped up and down Sano's shoulders, bouncing her tiny heels hard against his chest. Sano pretended to get hurt and grunted loudly. Suzume seemed to find this funny and continued with her antics.
Suddenly, a gentle presence made Sano pause. He turned to find that the young woman was slowly approaching him. A tentative smile creased her beautiful lips when she saw that she was being observed. Sano grinned and winked. "Hey," he said.
