Seras was again sleeping after Walter had given her a good stiff shot of Scotch. After she went back to sleep Integra ordered everyone else back to bed as well. Then she stomped off to her office where she impatiently waited for her undead servant to show himself. Soon enough Alucard appeared in front of her. She was none too pleased with the vampire.
"What in HELL do you think you're trying to accomplish?" Integra barked. Before Alucard could get a word in edge wise Integra cut him off.
"Never mind! I really don't care what you were trying to do! I can tell you that you have succeeded in waking up half the mansion by scaring the living day lights out of Seras Victoria!" Integra shouted.
"Keeps them on their toes." Alucard replied calmly.
"I should hang you from yours!" Integra yelled.
"Hmmm, been a while since anyone did that to me..." Alucard mused with a smirk.
"Oh shut up! I have just about had it with these ridiculous antics of yours!" Integra fumed loudly.
"Just about had it? Hmmm, I must not be working hard enough." Alucard replied as he straightened his gloves.
"Look, you are this close from me throwing your ass back in the cellar where I found you!" Integra thundered.
Alucard's amused smirk became a scowl at that statement. "You don't have to get so nasty about it. Honestly I wasn't going to hurt that silly girl. It's not my fault she can't handle it."
"Perhaps she can't handle it because you make it bloody impossible for her!" Integra snapped.
"Her problem, not mine." Alucard replied flatly.
"Well it's going to be your problem if you don't stop behaving like such a child." Integra answered sharply.
"And just how is it going to be my problem?" Alucard asked sarcastically.
"Because I will have you stretched on a wrack, drawn and quartered and then have your extremities scattered to the four winds!"
"That would be rather messy." Alucard said.
"Alucard, go back to your chamber. Don't you dare leave until I call for you. Now..." Integra began in a quiet tone. "GET OUT!" She roared.
The next morning Seras woke up feeling little woozy from the shot of Scotch Walter gave her to help her sleep. She rubbed her head and got out of bed. After preparing for the day, Seras sat back down on her bed and began to think.
"He doesn't want me as his partner. Sir Integra herself said twenty others came before me. Maybe I'm just beating my head against the wall. Alucard doesn't like me. Why else would he deliberately do all these things to drive me crazy?" She asked herself.
"She looked up at the ceiling. "Maybe I should request reassignment while I still have my sanity intact. How can I do my job when he won't let me? This is all just a big joke to him. Damnit, I can't be of any use if I'm so stressed out I have a nervous breakdown." She sighed.
Seras got up and started toward the door. She bumped into her nightstand causing a picture to topple from its resting-place. Seras quickly caught the framed photograph. As she went to set it back where it stood she looked at it for a moment. It was a picture of her as a child sitting atop her father's shoulder. Seras plopped down on the bed as tears began to form in her eyes. She rubbed the glass with her thumbs.
"Daddy, I don't know what to do. How can I work with someone who doesn't want to work with me? He makes it impossible for me to get along with him. I want to see this through. I want to be an able partner, but he won't let me. He want's his old partner back and he can't have that partner. And now he's taking out all his frustrations on me. I wish I knew what to do. I wish you were here right now. I wish you could tell me what to do daddy." She said pressing the picture to her heart. She began to think back to a conversation that she and her father had one day when she came home from school.
Seras walked in the door looking tired and forlorn after a hard day at school. Her father noticed the look on his daughter's face and walked over to her. "What's wrong Seras? Hard day at school?" He asked.
"Well, I've got a group project due at the end of the week, but the girl I've been paired with is just the most uncooperative person I have ever met. She sees this whole thing as just a big waste of time. She doesn't want to take part in the brain storming sessions, nor does she give any output when we do come up with an idea. She won't do any work on her part to help either. I'm doing all the work while she just sits and daydreams. And when I do try to encourage her to help out, she gets upset with me. If I don't get her to do her part we're both going to end up failing miserably on this project. I don't know what to do. I want to make this work, but I also don't want to flunk either. I don't know to do." Seras answered.
"Sometimes Seras we get put with people that aren't always the most agreeable in the world. I remember when I was just a rookie in the force. I was paired with a guy who was a real veteran. He was also one stubborn goat of a man who was a stickler for rules and regulations. Nothing I did was ever right, and when I did do something right it was never up to his standards. Many times I wished he'd just give me some recognition for my accomplishments no matter how small to him they may have seemed. There were nights when I dreaded coming to work because I knew I'd have to put up with his nagging me on every little detail. Nothing I did seemed good enough for his tastes. There came one night when I messed up on a drill and he grilled me for all it was worth. I'd never felt more humiliated and low in my entire life. That night I seriously thought about just quitting my job. Sure I'd have finally gotten away from the source of all my stress and mental anguish, but I'd also have let myself and the rest of the police force down." Her father explained.
"What did you do daddy?" Seras asked.
"After a lot of thinking I decided I was going to try one more time to stick out my time with my partner and give it a chance. And even though there were still many times he nagged me on my mistakes, I kept on going doing the very best I possibly could. That veteran whom I thought was the worst person in the world I could have been stuck with became my mentor and possibly the best partner I'd ever had. He's the reason why I'm the cop I am today Seras." Her father answered.
"I understand daddy. I don't know if I'll pass this project or not, but I'm going to try and make it work with this girl I've been paired with." Seras replied.
"That's my girl." Her father said giving her a hug.
Seras sternly wiped the tears from her eyes and set the picture back in its place. "No. I am not going to give up. Alucard may not want me for a partner, but that's his bloody problem. Sir Integra chose me for this assignment, and I'm not going to give up on it. I'm going to see this through. I'll make you proud daddy. Alucard or no Alucard, I'm going to see this through." Seras said firmly to herself with new found resolve.
An hour later Integra summoned Seras to her office. The Hellsing leader waited while the young agent to enter. Seras walked through the open door and approached Integra's desk.
"First off Seras I wish to apologize for Alucard's outrageous behavior and any undue stress it has caused you. He simply refuses to acknowledge anyone else but Walter as his partner. Second, I realize Alucard is probably much more than you can handle. I called you in here so that if you wish to request reassignment I will grant that request. Do you wish to be reassigned?" Integra asked fully expecting to hear the answer of yes. What she heard nearly floored her.
"No." Seras answered firmly.
Integra fought to keep her jaw from hitting the floor. "What did you say?" She asked in shock.
"I don't want to be reassigned. I wish to remain as Alucard's partner." Seras answered again.
"Are you absolutely sure?" Integra asked skeptically.
"Yes. I realize that Alucard has succeeded in shoveling off others so he wouldn't have to deal with them. Well, he is not going to shovel me off that easily. It's going to take a lot more than his childish antics to drive me off." Seras answered.
"You realize that those antics are going to increase if he can't drive you away as easily as the others." Integra replied.
"I know. But you must understand Sir Integra that my father was one of the best officers in his force. He wore his uniform proudly and died in the line of duty. I feel that I best honor his uniform and his memory by doing the very best I can. If I were to give up on this assignment, I feel I'd be disgracing both. I can't do that. I won't." Seras said firmly.
"All right then Agent Seras. If that is your wish, then so be it. If there is nothing else, you're dismissed." Integra said.
Seras nodded and walked out of Integra's office. Integra sat at her desk still shocked by the fact Seras actually wanted to remain as Alucard's partner. "Either that girl is a glutton for punishment, or perhaps maybe Alucard has finally met his match." Integra thought to herself.
That evening Integra sat at her desk going through her papers. The next few nights were going to be crucial in the operation against The Valentine Brothers. She was secretly thankful Seras decided to keep the assignment. But she also dreaded the awful hazing the girl was going to be in for when Alucard learned Seras was not going to back down. The things he'd done to her so far were just child's play compared to what he could really do. And he could get nasty about it when he wanted to be. She looked up from the corner of her eye to see her vampire servant phase through the wall to the side of her desk.
"I had a talk with Seras Victoria today, Alucard." She began.
"Really? I assume she's requested reassignment?" Alucard asked with a smug grin on his face.
"No." Integra answered.
"She quit?" The vampire asked again. And again Integra answered, "No."
"She's being committed?" Alucard inquired once more beginning to wonder where this game of twenty questions was leading.
"No Alucard. She's decided to remain on as your partner." Integra answered with a secret smile of her own.
"Run that by me again." Alucard said as his eyes widened.
"She's not leaving Alucard. Despite your ridiculous and outright childish foolishness, Seras Victoria is staying as your partner." Integra answered.
"You may return to your chamber now. That is all I wanted to tell you. Dismissed." Integra said waving Alucard away from her desk.
The vampire returned to his chamber still stunned at the news. So stunned that he almost overlooked the nightly ration waiting for him. He shook his head and plucked the blood pack from its icy bed. He opened it and poured himself a glass full. The vampire found himself in thought as he raised the glass to his lips.
"She actually wants to keep going? She didn't quit? That can't be right. She would have quit by now. They always quit. No mere human is strong enough to handle me. What makes the police girl think she's any different?" He thought with an air of frustration.
Alucard set the glass down and rested his head on his fist. "This can't be right. She's just a human like any other human. Only Integra is strong enough to control me. And only Walter was strong enough to put up with me. None of the others could handle what I dished out. What makes this girl any different?" He asked himself.
After a moment Alucard got up. "I will see for myself what makes the police girl think she's so special. Thinks she can handle me does she? Well, I'll see just why it is she hasn't gotten it into her head yet I don't want a partner." Alucard said with a stern frown as he vanished from his chamber.
Seras was in bed fast asleep. Alucard appeared at the foot of the bed looking sternly at her. "All right police girl. Now we'll see just why you insist upon continuing this ridiculous mission of yours." He thought to himself and began to look into her mind. He searched from her earliest memories as a child. So far he found nothing of particular interest. He actually yawned feeling bored at the lack of interesting content. He kept going till he came to her first days at the training academy. He scoffed at the memory of her getting her uniform.
"Oh yes, daddy's little girl wants to make a good impression. How droll." He thought with lack of interest and decided to go back a ways. Then he came to something that caught his attention.
He could see Seras and her father walking home from a restaurant. As they approached her father's car two men approached. Seras and her father both felt something hard and cold pressing against their backs. The men had guns.
"Get in the car. The girl too." One man ordered.
"Sir, please, whatever you want take it, just don't hurt my daughter. Let her go." Seras's father pleaded.
"Shut up old man. Get in the damn car. You girl, get your ass in there before I blow your old man's head off." The other man growled as he shoved Seras in the back seat of the car. He grabbed her arm as she tried to get away.
"You make one move to run you little bitch, and your dad here is gonna get a new hole to breathe out of. Now sit down and shut up." He warned.
Seras found herself being held captive in the back of the car while her father was forced to drive. One kidnapper sat in the back restraining Seras, while the other sat in the passenger side holding his concealed gun just in her father's eyesight. When the gunman turned away for a moment, Seras's father turned on his radio so it would receive every sound that came from within the car.
"You drive where I tell you to drive, or your daughter gets a bullet to the back of her head, understand?" The lead kidnapper growled.
Seras's father had no choice but to do as he was asked. He would look in the rear view mirror at Seras trying to give her some reassurance that they would be all right. She sat deathly still trying to keep from showing her fear. She was terrified that moment fearing that she and her father were about to die.
After thirty minutes of driving the kidnappers brought the car to a stop in a dark alley where no one would witness their activities. The man on the passenger side uncovered his gun and ordered Seras's father out of the car. The other kidnapper dragged Seras from the back seat and held her prisoner. The leader aimed his gun at her father.
"I did three years because of you. Three years! You know how much money I lost on the drug deal you ruined? More than that, my brother's dead now cause of you. Dead!" The man shouted.
"Look, you can do whatever you want to me. Just let my daughter go. She has nothing to do with this." Her father said trying to reason with his captors.
"You're not gonna beg your way out of this old man. I'm gonna make you pay for what you did to me, and my brother's death."
"Let him go! Let my father go!" Seras screamed. The man holding a gun on her father stomped over and struck her violently across the mouth.
"Shut up bitch!" He yelled.
"You're gonna die old man. But first, you're gonna watch the little brat here take a bullet right between her stupid little eyes." The leader snarled.
"No! For God's sake she's only a child! Let her go! She doesn't know who either of you are! Do what you want to me, but let my daughter go!" Her father plead.
"Let's stop wasting time here! Just shoot the bitch so we can ace the old man before anyone sees us!" The other man shouted. The first kidnapper stalked over to Seras as she struggled in her captor's grasp. He held the gun to her forehead. "Sweet dreams baby." He said with a maniacal smile as he prepared to fire his gun.
Seras's father rushed toward the man and spun him around. He punched the gunman in the stomach trying to get him to drop the gun. Seras bit into the hand of her captor and then kicked him right in the crotch. She started punching and kicking him as hard as she could. Her father struggled with the gunman as he tried to wrestle the gun away. But before he could make the attempt the gun went off right into his chest. Seras turned and screamed when she saw her father hit the ground with a sickening thud.
"Daddy!"
The gunman struck Seras on the back of the head. She hit the ground not too far from her father. "Your turn now." The gunman growled as he aimed the gun at the back of Seras's head. But before he could pull the trigger he heard sirens.
"Shit! Cops are after us! How the hell did they know where to find us?" The gunman asked looking down at the body of Seras's father.
"Forget it man! We just killed a cop! Let's get the hell out of here!" The second kidnapper yelled.
"What about the girl?" The gunman asked frantically.
"Forget the bitch! Let's get our asses out of here before we're caught!" The other man yelled. They both ran into the night leaving Seras alone and bleeding from her head. She managed to crawl over to where her father lay.
She laid her head upon his bleeding chest. "Daddy..." She sobbed. "Daddy, come on. You've got to get up. You can't leave me. Daddy please get up! Daddy!" Seras screamed as police cruisers pulled up to the crime scene.
Seras began to stir from her sleep. Her body began to shift and turn restlessly. Lingering in her memory too long he had aroused it from the deep recesses of her mind. "Daddy..." She groaned.
Quickly Alucard looked through her mind for anything that might settle her now restless fears. He found another memory. This time her father was leading her on a small white pony on her sixth birthday party. He brought that memory out to replace the traumatizing one he'd released previous. Seras quieted down once more and went back to sleep.
The elder vampire vanished from her bedroom and went back to his chamber. He sat back down digesting everything he had witnessed.
"She witnessed the murder of her father. She was almost murdered herself. But she didn't give into her fear. She fought back. Even though she was only a child and the odds were against her, she fought back." Alucard said to himself. "Perhaps I have underestimated how strong she really is. She is more of a survivor than I thought."
This night would leave Alucard with a great deal to think about. He looked over at his coffin and sighed. The sun would be coming up soon. He decided he would take the day and rest his body. His mind however would do anything but rest. He was beginning to realize there was more to the police girl than he had previously thought.
