~~~ Chapter 4 ~~~
Electra looked towards the voice and found herself staring into eyes as gray as her own. But while her eyes were dark and stormy, his were cold and wintery. They held no sparkle but they glittered. And as he approached, Electra saw that they were not gray but the palest of blue. His hair, like his eyes, was a cool light color, appearing silvery in the dark and making him look almost ethereal. He was built lithely, but powerfully, with muscles hard from years of fighting, dodging bullets and wielding the katana that he carried.
When he first spoke to her, he had been silently laughing but now, there was no trace of that earlier humor. His cold gaze took her in, trailing over her whole frame, insulting her with his eyes while his lips curved into a sneer. He did not say anything but she saw that his stare shifted towards the men tied up on the floor.
Electra lowered her gun slightly but still kept her aim with the nuzzle. One can never be too sure, especially with someone as cold as this. Realizing that he was the mysterious 'Mr. X', she told him, "I have brought the package."
"And Spike?"
Electra shifted. Why was this man curious about Spike? Could it be that they know each other? Then she narrowed her eyes at him, saying, "When you advertised the bounty, you gave no specifics as to who should bring the bounty head. So why ask about someone who is obviously not as skilled at bounty hunting?"
A half-smile crossed his features briefly before he said, "Well said." And then, he moved towards the two men, Planchet and Triton, and removed his katana from its sheath.
Electra watched his movements with some bit of curiousity, thinking that the silver-haired man would use the blade to slice through the rope. But to her great surprise, she saw that that was clearly not what the man intended as he wielded the sharp blade and slashed across, effectively cutting the two men's throat. Not a sound was uttered as their lifeless bodies slumped and thick blood gushed out from their open wounds, casting the hard ground in dark red.
"What the...?" Electra exclaimed in surprise. She stared at the silver-haired man, her dark gray eyes wide in shock. Her hands had raised automatically, instinctively, sensing the danger she was in. She looked at his face, noting that there was no expression there. Not even anger.
"I have no use for imbeciles," he murmured, staring back at her and at the gun that she carried. If he had been one who was inclined to gesture, he would have raised one brow questioningly then but as it was, he merely stared and said, in that same flat tone, "I would put that down if I were you."
"I thought you wanted them alive" was all Electra could say. And then, regaining her composure, she added with more force this time, "You could have mentioned that you wanted them dead. Saved yourself the trouble."
"Now, now, that doesn't sound like you at all," he said, his tone softly admonishing, then added with deadly precision, "Electra Ovilo." At Electra's sharp intake of breath, he chuckled that same mirthless chuckle he let out a while ago. "Why, of course, I know who you are. There's no mistaking that tattoo and not to mention, you have a bounty on your head, too. Yes, Electra, I know who you are." He said this last bit quietly, letting the familiar address slide through his mouth.
Electra gritted her teeth, trying to keep her irritation in check. When she spoke, the coolness in her own voice did her proud. "You have good sources, granted. But I have made my delivery and I think now is the time to discuss about finances."
That chuckle again. "*'Evermore in the world is this marvellous balance of beauty and disgust, magnificence and rats.'"
Huh?
"You should take my advice, Electra, and put down your gun," he continued. "My men behind you won't be partial to have their leader subject to the nuzzle."
Hearing this, Electra resisted the urge to look around her. She had noticed that something wasn't right when she first entered the warehouse. It was too quiet and the shadows that abound could too easily hide someone who posed a threat to her. She should have listened to her instincts then. This was the second time it happened, when she ignored her instincts, those same base senses that had many times gotten her out of trouble. No more. From now on, she would heed them, no matter how illogical they may seem. She raised one eyebrow at the silver-haired man and said scoffingly, "What's stopping them? They could shoot me right now but my bullet would reach you first. Either way, you die."
He clucked his tongue. "Tsk-tsk. What is death but something that is perchance to dreaming?"
Electra paled. His words caused her to remember a face. A rugged, haunted face. Vincent! "You fucking bastard!" The woman shouted, releasing the safety of her gun. At the same instant, she heard the clicks of several guns behind her.
The man looked at her as though saying "I told you so." Electra was sorely tempted to fire her gun then, just for the sheer pleasure of placing shock on that damnably placid face. In fact, she would do that. What was stopping her? It wasn't like there was anyone waiting for her. No one would miss her if she died. The Bebop crew would go on without her...
In a flash, the man had moved behind her, the cold metal of his katana pressed threateningly against her throat, enough to cause the skin break and cause tiny droplets of blood to trickle. His hissing breath tickled the hairs around her temple as he whispered, "Perhaps it's best if you do not try my temper, my dear. You may find it...unpleasant." He drawled the last word, as though savoring the taste of it in his mouth. Then with a hard push, he forced her into the arms of a man who suddenly materialized behind her. "Place her in the van. Get rid of the bodies."
"Yes, Vicious-sama."
Electra's head whirled at the name. She recognized that name. Could it be...? She looked at the silver-haired man, at the cold sneer on his face, at the listless, pale, blue eyes. "Y-you're Vicious?"
Vicious smiled then and this time, his amusement was genuine. "But of course. I thought that with your intelligence, you would have figured it out by now." Then he affected a sigh, adding, "Then again, I should have introduced myself beforehand. You will forgive me for my lack of manners, Ms. Ovilo."
And with that, he turned around and disappeared once more into the shadows, leaving Electra staring after him with mouth agape.
Frowning, the henchman tugged angrily at her arm. Behind him, several more men appeared, all of them armed. One of them divested Electra of her weapon and led her towards a waiting, unmarked van.
Ah yes finally, Chapter 4 is up. That took longer than expected. Anyway, Chapter 5 will be even more interesting. By the way, I decided to write this in the third person but with Electra's POV so the narration will be mainly about her thoughts on what's happening. Thanks to all who reviewed. BlueVixen, thank you. I appreciate that. Again, thanks all!
