“Don’t just throw her over your shoulder, you know.”
“It would be easier to carry her that way.”
“She’s been through a lot, you know. We still don’t know how she emitted that red light.”
“She’s the key; she’s bound to have some kind of power.”
“But all the same, we should get back to camp, you know.”
“Yeah,” strong arms lifted the barley coherent Kaki carefully and carried her through the forest. Kaki sighed into the embrace and leaned in closer to the warm body. The man stopped moving.
“Hey, you wake?” Tasuki asked softly. Kaki slowly shook her head no, not able to speak. Tasuki chuckled a bit before pulling the girl up closer, gaining a better grip and continuing to the camp. Chichiri had already laid out a blanket for Tasuki to put his bundle on.
“What happened to the girl, Genrou?” Ren, another one of the bandits, asked.
“She got attacked while taking a bath.” He replied.
“So she just needs to relax a little, you know.” The monk added, placing a blanket on top of the once again unconscious woman.
“Yeah, she threw the monster against a tree using the light of Suzaku.” Tasuki told his group. To say they all looked shocked would be and understatement. Shii looked over at the sleeping girl.
“Don’t you wonder who exactly this girl is? Did Miss Miaka ever turn red with the light of Suzaku?”
“Of course, but she always had Tamahome with her, you know.”
Tasuki thought for a moment, “She did, didn’t she?” Chichiri nodded.
“Don’t you think we should get moving, Genrou? The girl isn’t safe here anymore.” Ren asked.
“We’ll leave at sun rise. Right now just get some rest.”
“But what about the girl?” Shii asked.
“Tasuki and I can take turns watching over her tonight, you know.” Chichiri said stretching.
“I’ll take first watch.” Tasuki said quickly. Chichiri hid his smile. He had a very good idea where they were headed. And it would be a good thing to, especially for his fiery friend.
“Okay. We should take four hour shifts, you know.” Chichiri bunkered down against a near by tree, still smiling about the new situation. Sometimes he wished for a love of his own, but his beloved had been so wonderful, just having her was enough. He would carry the memory of the love they shared for the rest of his life and those memories are all he needs. All he can do now is watch over Tasuki’s budding relationship just as he had for Miaka and Tamahome and then again when Tamahome was reborn has Taka. His thoughts drifted to the couple. Chichiri said a little prayer that they both were fairing well.

The former priestess of Suzaku watched her handsome warrior as he slept. She leaned forward and kissed Taka then laid her head on his chest listening to the gentle rhythm of his heart and breathing.
Taka moaned a little before looking down at the young woman, “Miaka? What is it?”
She just smiled, “I was woken up by someone calling me and I felt very happy. I think something very good is happening in the book.”
The man smiled and rubbed Miaka’s check lightly, “The book huh? Who was is?”
“I think it was Chichiri.” Taka looked thoughtful. Miaka sat up and retrieved her shirt from the floor.
“I’ll go make us some tea. Would you like any?” He turned with a smile.
“That would be nice, thank you.” Miaka walked into the small kitchen area, humming while she set to work warming up the kettle. She sat at the little two seater table and waited. Miaka soon found her self thinking about her friends in the book. It was defiantly Chichiri she had heard. What was going on?
“Miaka?” Chichiri’s voice sounded out of now where. The priestess looked up to see the monk standing before her.
“Chichiri!” She shouted and got up to hug him. “Wait,” she stopped dead in her tracks, “How are we able to talk like this?”
“What were you thinking about before you saw me?” the monk asked.
“Well… you and Tasuki and what’s going on in the book.” Miaka said after a moment of thought.
“I was wondering how you and Taka were fairing, you know. I had a feeling that our thoughts are allowing us to speak.” Miaka lightly touched Chichiri’s arm and, confirming that is was solid, gave the monk a big hug.
“How is everything going?”
“Well, Konan has had a recent influx of demons, you know…”
“Oh that’s awful!” Miaka moved back to look at Chichiri’s masked face.
He held up his hand, “Don’t worry, you know. Tasuki and I are on our way to the main temple of Suzaku, along with the key. Her name is Kaki. She’s a lot like you, you know. Tasuki has a crush on her, too”
“I had a feeling something good was happening.” Miaka smiled. Chichiri smiled and looked at Miaka’s attire, or lack there of. The young woman noticed and looked down.
“I’m not going to ask why you’re dressed only in that, you know, but I will ask if Tamahome is okay.”
Miaka blushed, “Yes, he’s going fine. I was actually just making some tea for the both of us.”
Nodding Chichiri said, “I should let you get back to him, you know.” With one more quick hug, Miaka was returned to Taka’s kitchen.
“Miaka?” Taka sat next to her with a concerned look on her face.
“I was right. Good things are happening.” She said with a wistful smile.

“Chichiri, come on, man, wake up.” The monk was forcefully shaken into consciousness. He looked around and yawned. It had been 4 hours already?
“Hey, you okay?” Tasuki looked worried.
“Yeah, I’m fine, you know. I was just having a talk with Miaka. She and Tamahome are doing fine, you know.”
“Oh good.” Tasuki sat next to his fellow warrior. He was beyond tired.
“Go to sleep, you know. We have a long way to go tomorrow.” Chichiri clapped Tasuki on the shoulder before getting up to go sit watch over Kaki. ‘Miaka, huh?’ the fire thrower mused. ‘I am glad she’s okay.’ Gods, did he love her. And he would be lying if he said that he wasn’t a little envious of Tamahome. But truth be told, Tasuki loved Miaka so much that it was enough that she was happy. That thought carried him into the blissful arms of sleep.
