Epilogue
The “Great Event” as it became known as, set off a flurry of cause and effect reactions that not even Seguchi could have predicted. Besides going down in the annals of music history as the most popular non concert ever attended, several interesting conclusions came about as a result. Read on to find out what happened in the aftermath.
Bad Luck/Nittle Grasper Record Sales
Tipped off by a not so anonymous call, news reporters and cameramen were able to capture live the most outrageous publicity stunt NG Productions had ever staged—the lyrical wooing of Bad Luck lead singer, Shuichi Shindou, by Bad Luck Genius Guitarist Hiro Nakano and the resulting fight over him with Japan’s leading romance novelist Eiri Yuki. Rights to the live broadcast started bidding wars that to this day have never been equalled. Bad Luck’s subsequent cd release, “Real Men”, which includes the song “So Fine, featuring Ryuichi Sakuma”—sold more than two million copies the first day and doubled that the second. The release, which includes a video featuring Eiri Yuki as a demon and Hiro Nakano as an angel fighting to win the love of mortal Shuichi Shindou has been blamed for the recent population boom in Tokyo and the surrounding area some nine months later…
Suguru Fujisaki
Given full writing and arrangement credits on the best selling song of the year “So Fine,” Suguru Fujisaki, (Height 170 cm, weight 59 kg, Blood Type O, Favorite Food Squid Hot Pockets) was suddenly thrust into the limelight as a genius composer. Interviewed by several magazines including “Composers Monthly,” “Rolling Stone,” and teen rag “Super Cutie Honey Boy,” Fujisaki with his delicate good looks and elfin like features has been quoted as saying that his inspiration for success comes from his family, which of course makes him a hot property with the teeny bopper set as well as several yaoi manga authors…
Little did anyone know that late at night, when the house was sound asleep, Japan’s newest teen sensation could be found under the covers jerking off furiously to his magazine articles while images of him beating the hell out of his so called family inspiration, Tohma Seguchi, with his Japanese MTV Music Award flashed through his head. “Oh yeah, (pant, pant) take that, and that and that….uh, uh, uhh (breathing hard)…ahh… Bitch, you’re going down! Ohhh!”
Ryu and Tatsuha
Ryuichi Sakuma, already a hot property in all definitions of the term in both Japan and America, once again found himself the object of heated desire thanks to a pair of white lace spanking ass pants with diamond cut outs on the side that showed peek after heavenly peek of creamy soft skin. Thanks to the exposure he got (no pun intended) from the release of the live “So Fine Event,” Ryu was tapped to lend his name to his very own line of fashionable club clothes. The first season featured several pairs of similarly revealing lace pants offered in a variety of seductive colors. After only a week of being on the market, there wasn’t a dance floor in all of Tokyo that didn’t have at least a dozen asses (both male and female) bumping and grinding in a pair. So popular were the pants that they actually got their own anime series. Ryu, as head of the fashion line, of course got to bring home samples of each pair, which he modeled in personal late night sessions for Tatsuha every night of the week.
Tatsuha, the recipient of those frequent, late night marathon modeling sessions, had taken to going to temple regularly and offering thanks as well as copious amounts of money in the offering bowl (positive reinforcement was a beautiful thing.) So often could he suddenly be found there meditating thoughtfully, that his father approached him out of happiness and, well, a little concern.
Uesugi-san: “Tatsuha, I’m overjoyed that you’re finally taking a serious interest in the temple…but…I gotta tell you, I’m concerned about the wheelchair, son. You can tell me anything Tatsuha, I’m your father. Are you alright?”
Tatsuha: (slowly removing the oxygen mask so he can speak) “Never better, Dad,” he replied weakly.
Eiri and Shuichi
At first, it didn’t appear that the “Great Event” had done anything to improve the lives of these two sad sacks beyond financial success—Eiri with his latest novel “Demon Lover” and Shuichi of course from the phenomenal sales of “Real Men” and the scandalous video it included. After the initial “honeymoon” Eiri went back to being a snotty, verbally abusive, jackass and Shuichi went back to compulsively obsessing over their relationship. But, upon close inspection, the before and after differences could clearly be seen.
While Shuichi still cried at the drop of a hat whenever Eiri mouthed off, he didn’t spiral down into the depths of despair that he used to. Yes it made him sad and hurt, but no longer did Eiri’s ridiculous behavior make Shuichi think that he was less a person that deserved less love than he was getting. His night with Hiro produced a subtle change in the way he held himself and his posture and the way he thought of his self worth. Eiri, who lived with Shuichi and could see the change in a way that those on the outside could not, adjusted to the differences. Whenever Shuichi stiffened at one of his remarks or Eiri found himself on the receiving end of a nasty flash of violet eyes, he quickly reconsidered his remark and made amends or as time went on, considered what he said before he actually said it. Eiri also never forgot that whenever he was tempted to kick Shuichi out, there just might be a red head waiting in the wings. This fact went a long way to swaying him to new, less rash courses of action.
As each man grew and matured, so did their relationship and their trust in each other. Baby step improvements continued for a long time in such a fashion that no one on the outside could pin point the actual moment when they noticed that Eiri and Shuichi had gone from the wreck that they were to the solid, loving foundation that they had become—an actual happy, loving couple.
After a short period of hesitation and awkwardness, Shuichi and Hiro became faster friends than ever and for a while after “The Great Event” Shuichi picked up the slack and was there for his tall friend when he knew Hiro’s heart was still hurting. Even though, as usual, Hiro never asked for help, Shuichi realized he didn’t have to wait to be asked to give it. Hiro accepted gratefully. Eiri accepted their friendship and eventually was able to take it all in stride, but secretly kept a weather eye open on Hiro just the same.
Shuichi never forgot his night with Hiro and Eiri never asked about it.
Mr. Pantyman on the Third Floor
As it turns out, the panties Mr. Pantyman on the Third Floor found on his balcony the day of “The Great Event” WERE his after all or rather they were his by association. He’d completely forgotten that the little Junior College crumpet he was shagging on the side had a Sailor Moon fetish.
The potted plant where the offending garment had been found was planted in a planter that was large, tall, sturdy and had a large, broad ledge that was just the right height and width to accommodate the slim supple bum of his delectable future accountant. When his wife found out that he had indeed been pretending to be R. Kelly, she contacted a bloodsucking lawyer recommended by one of her neighbors, a nice romance novelist that she met in the elevator one day. The bloodsucking lawyer took everything Mr. Pantyman had, including the errant drawers, which he used as evidence in divorce court.
No longer able to afford the high roller lifestyle, Mr. Pantyman had to move out of his flat and downsize to a one-room tenement.
His future accountant subsequently left him and shacked up with the bloodsucking lawyer, who interestingly enough had a Venus 5 fetish. They got along swimmingly.
Eiri’s Building Management Team
After the publicity and exposure “The Great Event” had given the building, vacant properties there were suddenly hotter than hot real estate. Featured in premium property listings and magazines, they were also featured on the Travel Channel’s Ten Best Places To Live in Tokyo. Prices doubled and tripled within the month as evidenced by the astronomical price a recent vacancy on the third floor commanded.
The Building Management Team, overwhelmed by their sudden success and rise in already prominent stature, sent an expensive flower arrangement over to Tohma Seguchi at NG Productions in thanks and to K, who had persuaded them against their better judgment to have the “video” staged there in the first place, they sent a cheese basket. They’d heard that K was American and someone in the building, a romance novelist who’d lived in America for a time, told them Americans were terribly fond of cheese.
So it was that K was accosted by a 35-pound basket of cheese on his desk one day when he got to work. Even he didn’t see that coming.
Mr. Deliveryman
Immediately after “The Great Event” Mr. Deliveryman was rushed to the hospital with a severely broken nose. His whining and screaming the entire way there, caused an “accidental” dose of morphine to find its way into his veins, which shut him up nicely for a while but in a freak coincidence of genetics wound up exacerbating the damage of his broken nose. Due to the extensive damage done to his schnozz, he was forced to undergo a complete face reconstruction and subsequent nose physical therapy where he was put through three grueling hours a day of nose exercises.
Fed up with life in Japan already and the nose being the last straw, Mr. Deliveryman decided to try his hand at his life long dream of acting. Though he’d been told by numerous people in the industry that he’d never amount to anything as an actor and that he’d be much better off and much happier as a deliveryman or perhaps something in the custodial arts, something for which his acting ability was commensurate, he took “The Great Event” as a sign from the gods and moved to America. There, he changed his name from Toshii Hamasaki to Ben Affleck and “hooked up” with a charmingly cute dude named Matt Damon while goofing off in Boston.
After being given his big break and making a moderate to large splash in the acting industry, he indeed proved to be better off as a deliveryman or perhaps something in the custodial arts—something commensurate with his acting ability.
He is currently looking for work in all three fields.
Mr. Beefbowlman
After threatening to burn the restaurant that’d messed his beef bowl order up “right to the fucking ground,” a new deliveryman was quickly dispatched poste haste with six large beef bowls as well as an additional six as compensation for his horrendous customer service experience.
As the deliveryman left, Mr. Beefbowlman realized that the friends he’d ordered the food for were no longer with him, having left two days before when they realized they weren’t going to get fed as promised. Wondering what the hell he was going to do with 12 entire large beef bowls, he opened one to eat lunch and found out that it as well as the other 11 were all chicken.
Authorities are currently investigating a mysterious fire, which burned a local Yoshinaya’s right to the fucking ground. Foul play is suspected.
Tohma Seguchi
Tohma Seguchi, the eternal girly-man sphinx sat back and watched events after “The Great Event” unfold with great interest. While he certainly couldn’t complain about the humongous boost in publicity and record sales the “Event” had given him, the company and surprisingly both Bad Luck and Nittle Grasper at the same time, deep down he was disappointed that Eiri and Shuichi were still together. He’d thought he’d seen an opportunity to relieve Eiri of a bothersome annoyance and for him to possibly swoop to Eiri’s aid and give him a shoulder to cry on while wooing him tenderly at this marvelous retreat called the Secret Inn. He’d planned on showing Eiri how much more than a shoulder to cry on Seguchi could be and otherwise comfort, kiss and cuddle away his sadness over losing Shuichi and by the end of the weekend, Eiri would have completely given into the Seguchi-Side and all would be right with the universe.
Oh well, at least his flower arrangement from Eiri’s Building Management Team was pretty. And he still had the “Wake Up, We’re Not Here to Sleep” Suite on standby…
On another interesting note, Seguchi asked K one day while passing him in the hall whether those “seeds of doubt” from Operation Woo Shu Breakdown had been planted.
After a second of wondering what he meant, K smiled and replied: “Why,
yes, I believe they were.”
Seguchi: “Really? I saw them just yesterday and it didn’t look like they were in any kind of doubt at all. In fact just the opposite. I don’t remember the point in time where they stopped being the wreck they were to the happy loving couple they are now.”
K: “They? They, who?”
Seguchi: “Eiri and Shuichi. I don’t believe seeds of doubt were planted in them at all.”
K (smiling widely): “What made you think I was ever talking about Eiri and Shuichi?”
K walked away and left Seguchi in the middle of the hall blinking his huge girly eyes in disbelief. Had he of all people just been played?
K and Hiro
The days following “The Great Event” were a mixed blessing for Hiro. On the plus side, his days were filled with frantic activity as the record company moved to capitalize on the sudden flurry of exposure they were getting as a result. Interviews, appearances, talk shows, meet and greets, recording sessions and crazed fan girls (the bags of fan mail for Hiro alone had increased ten fold—an extra mail truck had been put on Hiro detail just to handle it all.)
It all moved in a seemingly never ending blur that filled his waking life to the brim, leaving no room to be sad. His nights however, were hellish. Suddenly alone in a quiet room after not having a moments peace to himself all day long, left space for a torrent of fresh memories to come running. When he sat, he thought of “The Great Event.” When he lay down in his bed, he thought of holding Shuichi in his arms. When he slept, he dreamed of Shuichi driving away from him down a long winding driveway, never to return. Soon, the circles under his eyes became apparent. The fact that he was not eating well followed. Even though Hiro appeared to be in good spirits, joking with Shuichi on the phone in marathon talking sessions at night, stealing Fujisaki’s Pocky and throwing himself into his work, Shuichi became increasingly worried about his friend. After a particularly grueling day, he called his friend who was just walking through the door to his flat.
“Why don’t you come over for dinner. I’ll cook for you.”
Hiro snorted. “Uhh, no thanks.”
“I know, I’ll have Eiri cook you something”
Hiro laughed. “That’s even worse.”
“Listen, I know you’re not eating well, please, I’m just worried about you.”
Tiredly, Hiro smiled. “I’ll be fine. I have some rice balls that I’ll eat a little later. I’m just really tired now, ok? I’ll talk to you later.” Hiro sighed, hung up and dropped his bag. All he wanted to do was go to sleep. Moving toward his bed, he noticed something. His flat, which he’d been neglecting for several weeks now, was clean. Everything was neatly put away and his bed was made with fresh sheets. He opened his closet. All of his clothes were freshly laundered and hung.
“What the…”
He turned around to the kitchen area. That morning it had looked like a hazmat disaster area. Now everything was scrubbed, cleaned and put away and on the table was a place setting for one with a piping hot dinner waiting for him.
Hiro yanked open the fridge. It was filled with food, healthy and nutritious as well as a few choice snacks and beer. He closed the fridge, went to the table and sat down. A piece of paper with three little words everyone should be told at least once in their lives was written on it in small neat handwriting:
“Eat or die.”
Hiro stared in disbelief. He looked around expecting to see K standing right behind him, but surprisingly he was still alone. Scared of the consequences, Hiro ate. It was… good. After eating and cleaning up, Hiro went to sleep in a clean bed and for the first time since “The Great Event,” he didn’t dream of Shuichi.
Life continued in this manner over the next several weeks. Hiro worked like a dog during the day. More and more frequently he would bump into K, who, while never mentioning what he was doing for Hiro outside of work, would always have some kind of interesting topic to discuss with him. Some of them didn’t even have anything to do with firearms. Gradually Hiro began to look forward to his daily conversations with K.
During his nights, Hiro began taking better care of himself. He got out more, going to concerts and movies with Shuichi and spent time just walking outdoors with his thoughts. On the occasions that he slipped up and backtracked into depression, he’d come home to find his flat like before, cleaned and picked up with another threatening note; his table set for one with dinner. He would always go to bed on those nights feeling better and oddly cared for.
Days turned to weeks, weeks to months and months to seasons. Life settled down and became routine until the Christmas holidays rolled around. As usual, NG held it’s annual Christmas Eve luncheon for the employees and bands of NG before closing for the two week break that followed until the New Year. A large conference room had been set up for the occasion. Filled with a huge smorgasbord of international cuisine, it was a happy atmosphere marked by good food, loud chatter, flowing alcohol (a requisite at all office Christmas parties) and of course a Christmas tree with Secret Santa gifts.
Hiro who’d drawn Fujisaki’s name gave him a pair of Ryu’s lace pants in blue. Fujisaki, who’d apparently not heard of the phrase “it’s the thought that counts,” howled in horror when he saw them. Hiro and Shuichi cracked up. Neither of them saw Fujisaki when he left with the box of pants carefully tucked under his arm.
Shuichi had drawn Seguchi, which in and of itself was priceless. Since the exchange was anonymous, Shuichi saw his chance to get a little revenge on Seguchi for helping to plan his break up with Eiri. Shuichi had gone to a greenhouse nursery and picked out a huge two foot tall Venus Fly Trap figuring the bonnie lass would hitch up his skirt and run screaming for the hills when he saw it. When Seguchi opened the oddly shaped package, however, he squealed in girly delight and clapped his lace clad hands together happily.
“It’s beeeeeauuuutiful!!” He cuddled the meat eating plant to him, squishing the very pretty bow which had been attached to its pot.
“I’ll call him Audrey III.*”
Shuichi’s head fell into his hands. “I can’t win, can I?”
Hiro laughed out loud. “Nope.”
Shuichi cursed and went back to rummaging under the tree, trying to figure out where his gift was when he came across a small, square, plainly wrapped gift.
“Here’s yours, Hiro.” Hiro took it and ripped it open.
“What is that?” Shuichi peered at the item.
“It’s a cd.” Hiro turned it over and saw that it was Mint Condition’s latest. On the front of the cover was an office post it note that said simply:
“I think you want number seven, Merry Christmas.”
“I wonder who that’s from?” Shuichi wondered, trying to make sense of the cryptic note.
Hiro smiled, saying nothing. The small neat handwriting told him all he needed to know. He turned the cd back over and looked at the title of track seven. It was called “Someone to Love.” Hiro arched a brow. I think you want someone to love? What was K trying to say?
“What’s it called?” asked Shuichi, craning his neck to see.
“Hey Shuichi,” someone near the tree called, “here’s your gift.”
“OOO!” Shuichi took off forgetting the cd, tunnel vision leading him to his own package.
Hiro looked at the title of the song again and for the first time in many months, his heart began to race. He looked around for K, but he was nowhere to be seen. In fact, he hadn’t seen K for the past week, having begun to miss their conversations. Hiro wondered where he was. Behind him the noise of Shuichi screaming over receiving a pair of Ryu’s lace pants and Ryu screeching with laughter faded into the background.
Hiro raced home, not sure what it was he was expecting. Shuichi had begged him to spend the evening with him and Eiri, not wanting to see his friend alone on Christmas Eve, but being with Shuichi and Eiri on a holiday like this was the last thing Hiro wanted. And though he didn’t tell his friend, he had a sneaking suspicion that he wasn’t going to be alone.
He flung the door open and saw…a dark, empty flat. Hiro turned on the light, thinking there might be a surprise waiting for him. There wasn’t. The flat looked exactly the same as it did when he left for the luncheon earlier that afternoon. He turned around to look at the table. Empty.
“Shit, there’s not even dinner.” Hiro sighed in disappointment. Dropping his bag, he took out the cd and put it in the player. Putting track seven on repeat, he put on his headphones and sat down to listen to it.
He immediately recognized the jazzy syncopated rhythms the band was good for and the sultry vocals of the lead singer. However, instead of the sexy, damn near erotic feeling evoked by much of their music, including the now infamous “So Fine”, this song was sweet and uplifting. Slow and jazzy with lyrics that were plain and sincere, the song sang promises of an offer for real, rich, warm, gentle and giving love if only the listener needed it. The song asked the listener plainly and sweetly to take their hand and be guided to a love that would be giving and true. Hiro closed his eyes and smiled. The song was full of hope. Dare I hope? Can I have a love that’s all mine? The song made Hiro feel good thinking about the possibilities. He sat there listening to it over and over, each time, his smile got wider and wider.
Hiro started and opened his eyes. Something feathery had touched his cheek. K was standing in front of him tickling Hiro’s face with a long stemmed red rose. He was smiling softly, watching him, illuminated by the candles that now lit the room. Hiro looked around. On the table, dinner had been set for two. How long had he been sitting there listening to the stereo--and just how the hell was K getting in???
Hiro turned back to K and was startled again. His usual scruffy shogun ponytail was gone. Instead, his long flowing locks of bright blonde hair flowed freely about his shoulders and down his back, curling softly at the ends. His usually intense blue eyes gazed at Hiro with caution and something else. Hope. Dressed in a blue button down shirt, the color of which matched his eyes and dove gray leather pants, he cut an impressive figure before Hiro--and there wasn’t a gun in sight! The effect was dramatic. K stood still, watching him.
K had been watching over him these many months, waiting for him to realize that Shuichi wasn’t the only man around, that Shuichi wasn’t even the best man for him. He’d let Hiro make his mistakes and given him time to grieve through his pain, all the while he’d been just a step away in case he stumbled or fell. Never pressing and never letting Hiro know of his feelings, he hoped that one day, Hiro would come to notice him as more than just his gun toting manager. Was today that day?
K held out his hand to Hiro, held his breath and waited.
Hiro took off the headphones and looked up at K. He remembered the first time he’d come home to find dinner set for him on the table and how content it’d made him feel to know that someone was watching out for him for a change. He remembered times when he’d seen K at work and they’d shared great conversations. He also remembered feeling that K was never far away, even if he didn’t see him or speak to him, that he felt like K was watching him, taking steps to make sure he didn’t stray too far from the beaten path, and was standing ready to pull him back if he didn’t pull himself back in time. Without realizing it, thoughts of Shuichi had been replaced with K. He knew now that while he and Shu would always be the best of friends, a relationship between them wasn’t right for him. He needed something a little…different. Hiro smiled.
“I think I took your hand months ago and just didn’t realize it.” Hiro finally replied.
He stood and took K’s hand. It was strong and sure. He allowed K to pull him close, tilt his chin upward and kiss him with parted lips, slowly, warmly and thoroughly.
“Did you like your Christmas present?” K asked softly after they broke.
“Very much, but, I didn’t get you anything.”
K smiled. “That’s ok. I’m sure I’ll think of something.” He kissed Hiro again, deeply this time, but just as warmly.
Hiro smiled to himself, melting into the kiss. He was sure K had already thought of something. He was nothing if not a forward thinker.
End Story.

Miko and the Secret Inn
Miko stood back and surveyed her handy work. She’d just changed the name of the “I’ve Been Seduced and I Feel Fine” Suite to the “I Didn’t Get What I Wanted, I Got What I Needed” Suite. She’d just finished hanging the new door plaque when two of her customers passed her on their way to check out. Blondie and Red’s heads were bent close together in soft conversation. Red was smiling and Blondie’s arm was around his shoulders. Each carried a small weekender type bag.
She was glad it worked out for Red. She’d known after seeing him and Blondie that day in the parking lot that she’d be seeing them again. She was right. But then again, when wasn’t she right?
As she turned to go back to the reception desk, two new guests just checking in passed her on the way to their room. They unlocked the suite next door and the tall, lanky, spiky haired brunette went in. His doe-eyed blonde companion started to follow, but stopped to read the nameplate on the door.
“Wake Up, We’re Not Here To Sleep Suite.” He frowned and turned to Miko. “I don’t get it.”
“I’m sure you’ll get it sooner or later.” Miko replied.
“Hurry up and get in here Ginji, we got work to do!” Spiky called from inside the room. The blonde went in.
“Hey, Goldilocks.” The man popped his head back out.
“Who, me?”
Miko smiled…well…almost. “I think you’ll get it sooner, rather than later.”
Fade to black.
