Breakfast was different.
Nami didn’t talk to Zoro, Sanji didn’t talk to Nami, and Zoro talked to no one. Of course, this didn’t stop Luffy from talking to everyone.
“So yeah like…what’s the problem eh?” he looked from person to person comically then to Usopp who shrugged and continued to eat. “Eh? Zoro? Sanji?”
No one spoke and all involved continued to eat or drink their morning tea. Luffy quickly got over it and finished his food, leaping up from the table and leaving the cabin talking about the new day. Usopp was close to follow, wanting to escape the tension.
That left only three. Sanji. Zoro. And Nami.
Sanji finished his food and put the dishes in the sink, lighting a cigarette and leaning against the kitchen sink, surveying the scene. He wondered if it would explode right in front of him.
Nami put down her tea mug and looked at Sanji. “Couldyou please put that thing out? We’re inside and I need to look at maps pretty soon.”
The blond’s curly eyebrow quirked and he lowered his cigarette. He made as if to put it out, then merely tapped ash into the sink.
“You can look at maps in your room Nami. Kitchen’s a kitchen and it’s for cookin’ only. Maybe sex, since you seem fond of that lately, but mostly cooking.”
She flinched and Zoro continued to eat his steak, shoveling eggs into his mouth here and there. It was one of the better meals he’d gotten for breakfast from the cook as opposed to the generic eggs, toast, and bacon. Usually, Sanji gave Nami the good stuff.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about, but I need this area and your smoking is getting on my nerves. It’ll kill you anyway so just stop!”
Tap, tap.
Ash went into the sink and cigarette met pale pink lips again.
“Yer not my mother, so just get over yourself. I smoke where I want, when I want. Now, if you’re finished feedin’ your face, I’ve got dishes to wash.”
They stared at each other and Sanji didn’t even blink. The woman slammed the mug down and flounced out of the room.
The door shut and there was a silence.
One, two, three…. Sanji counted to himself before he burst out laughing, Zoro joining him.
The laughter died off and the cook began to wash dishes, a smile on his lips.
Zoro finished his food more quickly then and added his dishes to the pile next to the sink. He wiped his hands and began drying some of the dishes that were already there.
They fell into rhythm fast, Sanji’s mind wandering to what they could be doing on the Baratie just then. When he heard Zoro’s voice he was brought back to the present.
“Sanji? We’re done.”
The blond blinked. “Eh?” He looked around and saw the green haired swordsman was right. “I guess we are…”
He gave a short laugh and dried his hands. He went over to the fridge briefly and took a quick stock. He’d decide on dinner later, but for now…
“How was the steak?”
“It was good.” Came the gruff response. “Think Luffy wasn’t too upset with his pile of bacon?”
“Luffy’s never upset when it’s food.” He replaced the cigarette that had gone out half way through washing dishes and looked Zoro over.
“Going to train today?”
“Yeah.” The swordsman looked at him and crossed his arms. “You were sleeping last night. Sorry for bothering you.”
“It wasn’t a bother. Everyone needs someone to talk to.”
They stared at each other some more until Sanji looked away to tap ash into an ashtray sitting near by.
“I’ll be at lunch.” Was all Zoro said before the blond heard the kitchen door open and shut. He shrugged and took a book off the refridgerator.
Everyone will be at lunch…idiot…
Zoro trained with the weighted sword, his mind going over recent events.
Why the hell did I say that? Everyone’s going to be at lunch…I should find something better to say to him…stupid Nami. How dare she tell him to put out his cigarette? What a bitch….
He put the instrument down and took a breath, wiping sweat off his face and looking up at the sky. It wasn’t noon yet, but the sun was already very hot.
I’ll take a break now, go to lunch, take a shower, then nap for the rest of the afternoon.
He sat down on deck, leaning against the rail. He closed his eyes briefly, opening them when a shadow fell over him. He opened his eyes and saw a glass of water in front of him, fresh ice cubes inside.
He looked up into blue eyes. What?
“Looked like you needed this. Takin’ a break already?”
Zoro took it and drank it down. It was flavored with some lemon and something else he couldn’t tell.
“Put some vitamins in there. Don’t want ya droppin’ out here on deck.” Sanji stood back on his heels, thumbs in his pockets. His cigarette dangled from his lips as he looked down on Zoro, the towel in his back pocket swaying with the wind a little.
“…arigatou…”
Sanji nodded and they lingered there, Zoro holding the glass back up when he was completely finished.
“It was good.”
“Hn.” Sanji took the glass, the ice cubes chinking as they melted a little. “Lunch is in a few minutes.”
Zoro stood up. “Better go get a shirt then…” He trailed off and carefully crossed the deck to put his shirt on. He knew Sanji was watching him that’s why when he looked up and found the man walking toward him, he wasn’t shocked.
“Hm?”
“Just make sure you take a shower later. Can’t have my dish dryer smellin’ up the joint.”
Zoro barked a laugh and Sanji went around deck to go inside the cabin.
What ever you crap cook…
Lunch was also a quiet affair but with none of the tension the morning had held. Apparently they’d caught some wind and would be approaching Rogue Town sooner than later.
“Awesome! Gold Roger here I come!”
“Luffy, he isn’t going to be there. He’s dead remember?” Name said, sipping her drink.
“I know that!” he said with a small frown. “I just want to visit the gallows!” He finished off his food then and stood up. “I think I’ll take a nap!”
Zoro nodded. “I like that plan!”
Nami spoke up. “Who’s going to fix the water pump?”
Zoro shrugged, pushing his plate away from him. “Not in the job description. We have two anyway.” He stood up and waved as he left. “I’m gonna take a quick bath and crash for a while.”
Luffy nodded. “See ya later!”
Usopp sighed. “I suppose I’ll fix it…still need more parts though when we get to town…”
Nami nodded. “Good, because I’ll want a bath later.”
Sanji rolled his eyes and Luffy shook his head before leaving the cabin. Usopp spoke up.
“You know Nami, I’m not your personal Mr. Fix it. I can show you how to work things yourself and make small repairs. This isn’t in my job description!” he jabbed his finger in the air. “I’m a brave warrior of the sea after all!”
The woman finished. “You mean a lying coward? Sure, yeah, whatever Usopp. Fix the pump. Thanks in advance!” She blew a kiss to the air and left, the caramel skinned sharpshooter blinking rapidly.
“Sanji! What happened there!?”
“I think she insulted ya Usopp.” He put out his cigarette. “Nami’s a real bitch.”
“I’ll say…hope Luffy’s not too mad about what she said.”
“Eh?” Sanji looked at him. “Luffy’s mad?”
Usopp nodded absently and got up from the table as well. “Want some help?”
“Nah, got Zoro doing dish drying these days. Thanks though!”
He nodded and left, muttering about how Nami was inconsiderate.

Sanji watched the oven for a bit then turned back to his book. Dinner would be ready in a good hour and the sun was already going down so he knew everyone was probably hungry. He read a couple of pages, listening to the door open and shut as someone came in.
“Sanji, dinner ready yet?”
It was Zoro.
“Give it an hour. You been asleep this whole time?”
“Yeah…” the man stretched and yawned. “It was great….what are you doing?”
“My job. Nah, I’m reading.”
“Hn.” He sat down next to the man and put his hands on the table. “I saw Usopp and Luffy sitting outside.”
Sanji turned a page. “What were they doing? Playing ‘checkers’?”
“No…something very different. They were watching the sunset.”
The blond shrugged. “Sometimes it’s nice to stop and watch.”
“With your arms around each other?”
Sanji didn’t skip a beat. “Well, you know Luffy’s gay. Does it surprise you.”
“Not much…only that it was Usopp who…started it.”
Sanji looked up at Zoro. “So?”
Zoro shrugged. “I don’t know. How do you feel about that sort of stuff?”
“Who cares if ya like each other? Not anyone else problem.”
The green haired swordsman threaded his fingers together. “So…it’s no one else business if…”
Sanji noticed the pause and looked back up from his book. “If what?”
Zoro flinched. “If nothin’! Forget it! Geez!” He stood up then and walked the cabin and stared out of the window. “Forget it.”
The cook glanced over at the oven and put down his book. He’d better start the side dishes now if he wanted everything to be ready on time. He stood up and Zoro’s attention left the window.
“Zoro?”
“I said never mind!” he barked and stormed out of the kitchen, muttering to himself.
Sanji watched him go and shook his head.
Yeah right…
