Chapter 5 – Do you want to die?
The dream changed
again, years passing in seconds as it focused
on an older Walter who was sorting papers on Sir Arthur Hellsing's
desk. For some reason the young man felt restless, his fingers
itching to swing the wires and sever a few ghoul's heads with them.
But the tasks had
already been assigned and while the Hellsing troops
were taking care of a group of ghouls, Alucard was hunting an old
vampire and Sir Hellsing was at a Round table meeting, Walter had
been told to stay at the mansion and keep things in order. Not that
he was generally unhappy with his position as the Hellsing butler,
but on the nights Alucard was out it got quite boring.
Thinking about his
immortal lover caused a smile to spread over Walter's features. If he
had been out to kill Alucard was usually in high spirits when he
returned, the thrill and excitement of
killing brought into their shared bed. Or rather coffin, since they
always met in vampire's chamber.
His mood brightened
by thoughts of Alucard's return Walter quickly adapted his role as a
perfect butler, when the phone on Sir Arthur's desk rang, the voice
at the other end sounding quite frantic. “I understand. The
problem will be dealt with at once.”
Scotland Yard had
raided a warehouse, only to be attacked by vampires. After loosing
quite a number of their units they had finally decided to alert
the Hellsing organization, asking for
assistance in their perilous situation.
They hadn't been able to tell Walter the exact number of vampires
they had been facing, but they guessed that there were at least two
of them.
Walter was well aware
that he should inform Sir Hellsing of the situation and wait for
their troops to return from their
assignment and handle it, but he was way too reckless for that.
Taking on an unknown number of vampires all by himself was risky, but
it wasn't like he hadn't already done that once or twice in the past,
although Alucard had usually stood by as back-up, just for the case
that something went wrong.
Well, his lover
wouldn't be there tonight, so Walter just had to make sure that
nothing went wrong. Fetching his wires and gloves he got into one of
the Hellsing's cars and drove off into the direction of the
warehouse.

The warehouse was surrounded by police cars but all of them kept
their distance, hoping that the vampires would stay inside. The
commanding officer looked skeptical when
Walter arrived all by himself, but after a short discussion he
withdrew his troops and allowed the young
butler to pass.
Anticipation was weighing heavy in his stomach as he approached
the silent building, a small side entrance his goal. Trying to keep
his movements completely soundless he entered the warehouse, creeping
up a set of stairs and looking down at the storage space.
Two vampires were perched on crates in the middle of the room,
staring at the corpses of the killed policemen and obviously waiting
for them to turn into ghouls. Since Walter couldn't spot any other
possible sources of danger he crept back down, wanting to attack the
vampires before their ghouls awoke.
Hiding in the shadows that were created by the rows and rows of
tall crates stored in the warehouse Walter approached the vampires,
not a sound betraying his movements. Stealth was a lesson Alucard had
taught him well, training for hours and
hours until his movements were so smooth that they barely stirred the
air around him.
His two opponents were oblivious to his presence, so he tightened
the wires between his fingers, ready to wrap them around the
vampires' throats and decapitate them. Unfortunately just before he
could move into action low groans started filling the room as the
ghouls arose, heeding their master's commands.
But even that was something Walter could overcome. Mentally
counting the amount of ghouls he was facing the young steward changed
his position slightly, creeping even closer to the vampires. If he
could take them out quickly the ghouls would pose no threat at all,
nothing but puppets devoid of the masters who were pulling their
strings.
His wires sliced through the air, the faint hiss of flying metal
alerting the vampires to his presence. But
before they had time to command their ghouls to attack him they were
already crumbling to dust, their head severed from their necks.
The ghouls stayed behind, hollow uncomprehending eyes staring at
the young butler. Empty shells of human
beings that they were they didn't even fight him as his wires sliced
them to pieces, their minds unable to function without a vampire to
command them.
Looking down at the dust that now coated the warehouse floor
Walter smiled. His recklessness seemed to have gone with the end of
the fight, the only thing he now felt was the wish to return home and
amicably spend the rest of the night with his immortal lover. It had
just been a short moment of carelessness, but the vampire who had
been hiding on the crates above him seized it immediately.
Heavy weight connected with his back, sending him to the floor.
The vampire's solid weight resting on his back rendered him immobile,
his hands unable to throw the wires around the Immortal's neck. Damn
it. Struggling to the best of his abilities Walter tried to get free
but the vampire just laughed at him, bending his head down towards
his throat. He could already feel the fangs
connecting to his skin, a little more force and they would slip
inside.
But then the pressure was suddenly gone, dust swirling down in
front of his face. Rolling over onto his back Walter stared at the
red-clad figure of his lover, the vampire's expression completely
unreadable to him. Without speaking a single word Alucard turned
around and left, not bothering to pick the Hellsing's butler up off
the ground.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~+~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The dream shifted again, now showing the insides of Alucard's
chamber. The vampire was sitting at his table, his expression belying
none of his inner thoughts as the door was slowly pushed open and
Walter entered the room.
Walter was unsure of how to approach his immortal lover, who was
somehow upset with him. True that he had acted foolishly in entering
the warehouse all by himself, but that had been two days ago and ever
since that night Alucard hadn't spoken a single word with him.
Frankly he was sick of being punished with silence for something he
only saw as a tiny slip up.
The thought had barely entered his mind when he found himself
pressed up against the wall, Alucard's face mere inches from his own.
The vampire's whole posture was radiating danger, a slight, probably
unconscious growl slipping from between his
bared teeth.
“Do you want to die, Angel?” Alucard's voice was
filled with the anger his posture had already hinted at, his fingers
digging into Walter's shoulders almost painfully. A slight sliver of
a fear he hadn't even felt while the vampire at the warehouse
attacked him raced down Walter's spine, the fear of dying more
pronounced as his eyes flitted down to the Immortal's fangs.
Shaking his head in denial Walter almost sighed in relief, when
Alucard's grip on his shoulders lessened a little, although the
vampire didn't let go of him just then. This was a side of his
immortal lover he had never had directed at himself before since
Alucard usually handled him with care, keeping his superior
strength in check.
“No? Then why do you go out seeking death?” The
question was laden with so much more than
just anger at the fact that he had gone to the warehouse alone. It
was also an epitome of their relationship,
of the intricate web of death Walter had entangled himself in.
“I didn't go out to...” Alucard's finger over his lips
silenced his protest, the Immortal's mouth ghosting over the shell of
Walter's ear. His tongue flicked out for the briefest of caresses,
sending shivers of desire rather than fear down the human's spine.
“I want you with me forever, Angel.” Alucard's
statement was both a question and an admission. The Immortal rarely
talked about his feelings, but to Walter this seemed as close to a
declaration of love as he would ever get out of his vampiric partner.
But it was also a question and Walter
knew that if he said 'yes' Alucard wouldn't hesitate to turn him. And
he wanted it. Deep inside a part of him was screaming to agree, to
join his lover for eternity. But it was only a small part,
overshadowed by the thought that he still had so much time, that he
was just too young to die. His silence seemed answer enough since
Alucard let go of his shoulders, sitting down on his coffin and
beckoning Walter to his side.
Walter was unsure if something had changed between them or if
everything was back to normal, but Alucard's kisses were just the way
they had been before their argument and so the young man quickly
pushed all thoughts of eternity to the very back of his mind.
