Omi came home later that night to
find Ken and Brianna cuddling on the couch watching a movie. The teen dropped into an armchair, sighing
heavily. “I have something of a problem.”
Brianna
lowered the volume, Ken grumbling softly in her ear. “Shush. It’s a DVD, you
can watch it again later. What’s wrong,
Omi?”
“We have
our senior trip this year, and they won’t allow me to go on it without a parent
or guardian’s signature.”
“I thought
we could sign for it? Aren’t we
considered your family?” Ken smoothed
Brianna’s hair down so that he could look over her head at Omi.
“Unfortunately,
while you can be listed as family, you’re not legal guardians.” Omi’s gaze dropped to his feet. “Persia was legally my guardian, but since
he’s died, he can’t sign anything.”
“You really
want to go on this trip?” Brianna’s
soft words made the boy look up at her, his eyes filled with that painful look
each of the assassins had when thinking about normal life. “Right.
Well, then it’s simple. We’ll go
downtown tomorrow.”
“Downtown?” Ken and Omi stared at her, neither fully
understanding.
“It should
be a simple civil process, seeing as how Omi is old enough to decide. Then all I need to do is sign some
paperwork, and I can legally be Omi’s guardian.” Brianna shrugged. “I
looked into it a bit when I found out that Jade was coming to Japan. The time may come when I need to do the same
thing for her. Her parents aren’t
very…involved.”
“You would
do that for me?” Omi held his breath,
hardly daring to look at Brianna, though his eyes kept darting back to her
face.
“I told
you. We’re family.” She rose, clasping his hands in hers as she
leaned down and pressed a kiss to his hair.
“Stop worrying about it, and go finish your homework. We’ll go first thing in the morning.”
Omi tried
to thank her, but the words caught in his throat. He nodded, swallowing back the tears that threatened, and hurried
from the room. Brianna watched him go,
her heart quaking slightly in her chest as she realized how much the simple
gesture had meant to the boy. Ken’s
arms came around her, and she leaned back against him, tilting her head to
smile up at him.
“Thank
you.” Ken affectionately nuzzled her
neck, not wanting the artist to see the emotion in his own eyes. “That…that’s really nice of you.”
Brianna
reached up to put a hand on his head.
“No, Ken. It’s not nice of
me. I’m as desperate for a family as
any of you, and the idea of being able to do something to bind us further together
makes me happy.” She twisted in his
arms, offering him her lips with a slow smile.
Grinning, he kissed her, his hands sliding over her back to hold her
hips.
Pulling
away, he brushed hair out of her eyes with one finger. “It’s getting late.”
Glancing at
the clock, she nodded. “You’ve got to
open tomorrow, right?”
“Yeah.” He shifted, using one hand to hitch his
jeans into a more comfortable place on his hips. “Yohji and Aya probably won’t be home tonight, Brie-chan. They’re on mission reconnaissance.”
“Oh.” She stood uncertainly next to him, studying
her bare toes. “I – “ She blew out her breath. “Can I stay with you then?”
“What?” Ken’s eyes widened, and he ran a hand
through his hair.
“I don’t
want to sleep alone. Can I stay with
you?” She traced an arc in front of her
on the carpet with one bare foot, feeling more awkward than she had in days.
“Oh. Uh,
yeah. I mean, sure.” He nodded, too quickly, and swallowed. “Are you sure you don’t want me to just stay
in your room? In case they get back in
time to join you?”
“No.” Her words were a whisper of sound in the
quiet apartment. “I’m fine with staying
with you all night.” She met his eyes,
a tender smile curving her lips.
“Besides, Aya and Yohji have each other. They’ll be all right.”
Ken nodded
silently, and motioned for Brianna to go.
He followed behind her, after turning the lights off and checking to be
sure the doors were locked. She was
already in the bathroom; he could hear the water running as she brushed her teeth. Quickly, he stripped to his boxers and stood
uncertainly in the middle of his room.
Before he could decide what to do, Brianna was there.
“Ken-kun?” Her voice broke the quiet and made him jump
nervously. He laughed, rubbing his hand
through his hair.
“Yeah?” He turned to see her silhouetted in the
light from the hall, her expression in the shadow until she stepped forward,
shutting the door behind her, and he realized she looked nervous. “What’s the matter, Brie-chan?”
“No…” She
shook her head, taking another step towards him. Suddenly, she threw herself into his arms, her hands sliding
around his waist and her face pressing into his chest. She relaxed as he held her, and she turned
her head ever so slightly to brush a kiss to his skin. “There.”
“Where?” Ken’s voice was rough, and he cleared his
throat. “I mean, what was that about?”
“I don’t
know.” She shook her head, hair
tickling and making him chuckle. “I
just…didn’t know what else to do.”
“Bed. Especially if you plan to get up and take
Omi downtown tomorrow.” He tugged her
with him as he moved to the bed, falling backwards onto the dark blue
comforter. There was a minute of
crawling under the covers, of moving pillows and adjusting bodies, and then Ken
reached out and turned the lamp off.
They relaxed into the darkness, and Brianna scooted closer, resting her
head on Ken’s pillow.
“This is
nice.” She smiled as he twined his
fingers in hers.
“Yeah.” Closing his eyes, he breathed in the soft
perfume that seemed to follow the girl everywhere. Turning his head and burying his nose in her hair, he muttered,
“You smell good.”
“Mm. Thank you.
I think.” She laughed, moving
restlessly next to him as he shifted again to nuzzle a kiss to her neck. “Ken – “
“Yeah?” Kisses trailed across her skin as her breath
fluttered into a gasp. Groaning, Ken’s
tongue rasped across her throat. “You
taste good too.”
“Ken – “
She rolled to her back, arching her back as she pulled at his shoulders. He moved over her, his mouth trailing down
to nibble at the flesh just over the neckline of her nightshirt. Before she could say anything else, he swept
the pajamas off over her head, dropping his mouth to lick across her breast.
“You asked
for this.” He panted a little as he
watched her face, his hands busy pulling her underwear down her thighs. His hand trailed back up her leg, teasing
across sensitive skin and making her squirm.
He kissed her, hard, nearly bruising; not angry, as Yohji had been the
day before, but almost desperate. She
dug her nails into his back, tongue bumping his as he invaded her mouth. “You asked to be here.” He pulled back, left her just long enough to
shed his boxers. His fingers dipped
into her, his smile widening as he felt dampness. “You want me too.”
She nodded,
lunging up to devour his mouth, the same desperate need reflected in her
eyes. He rolled to his back, bringing
her down over him, and slid into her with a moan that she echoed. “I want you, Ken.” Her hands braced on his chest, she began to move, his hands at
her hips helping her find the rhythm he wanted.
They fell
asleep wrapped around each other, neither noticing when Aya and Yohji glanced
in, hours later, to be sure that Brianna was there and safe.
Brianna had
thought it would be an easy process; take Omi, go downtown, sign papers. Unfortunately, no one wanted to be left out
of this process. The general vote was
to close the shop for the morning, so that they could go as a group.
Which was
how she ended up walking into the government building with all four assassins
in tow. As she explained what she was
there for to the young woman behind the counter, they stood at her back,
silently watching as she procured the forms needed. The clerk’s eyes kept darting to the handsome men, and finally
Brianna had to smile at the silly situation.
It only
took about fifteen minutes to finish all the paperwork and turn it in; another
twenty minutes of waiting anxiously for a manager to go over the file and call
them into his office. An older man, he
smiled kindly at Omi and Brianna before glancing curiously at the other three
men. “Ootori Tsuzuki. Pleased to meet you.”
“Thank
you. I’m Brianna MacLeod, and this is
Tsukiyono Omi.” She smiled as they sat
down, the other men leaning against the wall of the small office. “Don’t mind them – they’re the rest of our
family.”
“Ah.” Ootori adjusted his glasses and looked back
down at the paperwork quickly. “It
seems that everything is in order.
MacLeod-san, your visa is in the process of being granted residency
status, which is the only requirement missing.
Tsukiyono-kun, I’m sorry that no one contacted you after your guardian
died. The only excuse that I could
offer was that there was a great deal of confusion after the Takatori
incident. I’m glad that I can grant
this charming young lady the legal right to help you.”
“Really?” Brianna bounced in her chair excitedly. “Oh, thank you so much.” She turned and hugged Omi, who was smiling
hugely with tears in his eyes.
“Thank you
so very much, sir. I appreciate it more
than you know.” He beamed at the man
over Brianna’s shoulder.
Ootori
signed the last of the papers with his chop, and offered the sheaf to
Brianna. “Congratulations.”
“Thank
you.” She bowed as she accepted them,
and then the little group filed out. As
they stood in the elevator, she sighed in relief. “I’m so glad that went well.”
“Why
wouldn’t it have? You told us last
night that it’d be easy.” Ken frowned.
“I don’t
have a job anymore, Ken-kun. That could
have affected my residency negatively.”
She shrugged. “But apparently my
residency is going to be granted anyway, so it didn’t matter.”
She didn’t
catch the glance that Yohji gave Aya over her head.
Brianna
went into the school with Omi to talk to the administration about her new
status; the others waited in the parking lot.
Yohji favored Aya with a mock-glare and crossed arms. “So what did you do for Manx?” Aya shook his head. “No, really. She’s still got enough power in Kritiker to make something like
that push through. So what did you have
to do to get her to?”
“Nothing.”
“Nothing?” Ken laughed. “No way. There is no way
that Manx would have helped another woman get to stay near you without you
doing something extraordinary.”
“She did it
before I asked.” Aya shrugged.
“Wow.” Ken fell backwards in his seat,
stunned. “I wonder just what she and
Brianna talked about that night, that changed her mind.”
Yohji shook
his head. “I have the feeling that it
was watching Brianna fuss over us. Manx
is a soft-touch, no matter how she seems.
And it’s painfully obvious that Brie-chan loves us to pieces.” He grinned, pushing his sunglasses up a
notch. “And why shouldn’t she? We’re perfect.”
Aya just
snorted, and ignored the rest of the conversation.
