Save No. 5 - Blue Game Start (Parte deux)
Puddles dotted the wet grass, and small rivluets flowed along the ground on which the lone trainer walked. The old beaten path by now was far too muddy to use so the young trainer had taken to walking alongside it -between the tall grass and the line of dark mud she currently followed.
thankfully the rain had lessened to a fine mist while she was at rest within the center, and the tranquility that came with the dead of night had been nothing short of welcome. Even the animal calls at this hour had grown scarce although every once in a while a tiny Rattata would dart by, or Shinobu would spot a sleeping Pidgey or a fully-awake Hoothoot.
"Now, there should be a daycare around here somewhere, if i'm correct..." She mused in a tone that befit the quiet scenery, bright eyes glowing from the soft light of the pokenav's map screen. Strangely enough, when the little device was closed and replaced in her pocket, that eerie glow cast in a person's eyes from the device did not fade.... Sure enough after what felt like moments more (but apparently had been at least 15 minutes), the chimmney of a modestly-sized house came into view up ahead, quickly followed by the rest of the lonely residence. A sigh of relief...
"STOoooop! Thieef! Get back hereee!"
...Or maybe not.
Slow steps picked up into a faster jog, just in time to see an older woman slowing down in the pursuit of what looked like a young man in a suit, though it was too dark to discern just what he was wearing but one thing certainly stood out, the R on his back in bold red print. A rocketeer.
The young girl turned in the direction the suspect had run off in with a frown on her face, eager to track that boy down. Maybe she'd be able to have her team pursue him too! But it seemed the older woman wouldn't have this stranger risking her safety in dead of night -especially when they're already gotten away. Infact why was this little trainer travelling at so late an hour?
"Don't fret too much about it dear, it's the thought that counts. Karma'll catch up to'im anyways...You should come inside, it's quite late to be runnin around." The taller lady ushered her new guest inside a cozy, and very roomy household... A staircase to the far left, kitchen near the center and a staircase leading downward to the far right, nearest what she could make out as a sliver of the back wall. After preparing some blankets on the main floor the woman -who turned out to be the owner of the house- and Shinobu introduced themselves, and Sherry was happy to give the girl a tour as well as welcome the trainer's pokemon into the home, since the lady's residence doubled as the daycare she had been looking for on her map eariler. The tour ended with the trainer and caretaker in the kitchen sitting at a round table while the former's trio made themselves comfortable in the living room.
"Maybe that's why that rocket showed up here." The younger one sighed as Sherry nodded in agreement, arms crossed.
"Scoundrel made off with a pretty little totodile, odd colouration and everythin -what you trainers call a "shiny". Real shame really.... It's mother was dropped off by a rich-lookin girl about your age or maybe a year older.... two at best. Told me to take care of her till she could get back and well... just recently her contition's turned for the worse, m'dear."
"That's awful! Is there anything I can do?!" She sprang to her feet then, knocking over the chair in her sudden rise as eyes flashed in the dim lamp-shaded light hanging overhead... To steal a pokemon from a mother -no, two mothers was enough to incense this one, but from a sick mother? No. That, that she could not let sit on her mind and Shinobu made that thought clear not through words but through the stern look upon her face. It was as if Sherry was staring into an older image of this very same upstart.
"But it's okay, it's okay really dear!" The older one began, trying to return calm to that oddly strict face. Coming from what seemed to be such a happy child, it was a tad unnerving..
".. y'see, there's supposed to be a delivery comin in to the centre back in town by midnight, and-"
"-That's perfect! I'll go get it now then, why wait for tomorrow-"
"But it's dangerous out there! For all we know that theif's proably still runnin around AND the center's closed anyway-"
"I was just there! It can't have been that long! C'mon! listen, Sherry... I know i'm being selfish by asking this, but I can't just sit here knowing that they could still be out there. For all we know it could be the same rocket that attacked me eariler... I promise that if anything happens, i'll come right back okay?"
There was a long pause then, each staring hard at the other for what seemed like a good long while until the daycare owner finally gave in with a reluctant sigh, brushing back ginger bangs from a tired face. "Alrighty hon, i'll go give the center a quick call an see if Joy or any of the staff's still in, BUT!"
A finger was then held up for emphasis in the silence that ensued, which she wagged with almost every syllable that followed.
"I want you to go there and come straight back, no 'if's, 'ands' or 'buts', got it? - and hey! No crossin your fingers either you~" That last bit came out in chuckles shared by the two, and in the end Shinobu could only shrug in mock defeat before turning back to the living room, a bright and rightly youthful smile re-emerging upon her features. "Alright everyone, we're going to make a quick pick-up!"
The pokemon, having eaten thier fill were simply relaxing at this point, but thier trainer's call had thier focus back on her. The zangoose raised a clawed digit, casually leaning back on his other hand -or paw, whichever suits your fancy.
"Do I have to keep reminding you that you're still injured? You should let me and Garuda go and focus on resting up."
"I actually agree with you this time... we'll be back before you know it." The mentioned ghastly added. Of course this didn't sit with the girl and an exasperated sigh left her lips, before she moved to put on her coat and shoes. "I really appreitiate the concern you two, but what kind of trainer and what kind of person would I be if I let you do all the work?" Then Shinobu turned toward vulpix, crouching down to place a gentle hand to cheek.
"A trainer and thier pokemon are a team... You wouldn't let me walk right into danger unarmed, so why should I let any of you?"
"Because we've been doing it a lot longer than you think..."
The feline ferret answered in a tone she'd never heard before -well, not from him anyway. He sounded so... Dark... A glance his way and the young lady could see the emotion in those deep red eyes and it was hard to pin down just what it was, but of one thing Shinobu was sure, the longer she stared, the more miserable she felt. What exactly did Zan-kun mean by that? Before the violet-eyed lass could put that mental question into words however everyone was up on thier feet while the zangoose was already moving to stand outside the door, brushing past her without another word. The other two looked on with sympatethic frowns, then turned toward eachother, sure that they knew full-well the subject the white-furred one had touched upon.
"I don't understand... was it something I said?" The trainer muttered feeling like she'd somehow done someting wrong, but when no answer came she shook it off for now and recalled the ghost and fox before closing the door behind her, unaware of the look of shock on the proprietor's face who had just witnessed someone holding fluent conversation with a group of pocket monsters. One of those monsters was standing with arms crossed, a slightly relaxed yet stern look on his features while the trainer pointed her pokeball toward him, ready to return her last partner.
"Alright Zan-kun, back in your poke-- ah?!"
So quick she hadn't time to blink, the zangoose was now standing sideways, one clawed paw covering the hand that held the ball completely in that moment of surprise.
"Wait, you should have at least one of us out to look out for you. It'll be dangerous with wild pokemon and tea...."
Having already heard her fill of safety speeches from Sherry Shinobu was zoning out, becoming distracted by the fact that they were still holding hands. Well actually he was still holding her hand. The thoughts that followed were a bit random for the situation at hand but still fair enough, like just how large would Zan's paw be in comparison to her's if they were held against eachother. Which turned on a tangen toward the thought of playing with his paw-pads.
"I wonder if he'd mind?" She thought, putting away the minimized device before holding up the cat ferret's paw to better toy with.... Until that paw suddenly moved to entwine her fingers with it's own digits along with an exasperated sigh from it's owner, bringing the purple-haired one back to reality.
"... Did you get any of what I just said?" To this Shinobu could only shrug with a sheepish grin on her face, while the ferret gently smacked the palm of an unoccupied hand against his forehead in a classic facepalm gesture.
"Just... Stay close, alright?" He practically sighed out with a concerned frown, giving the trainer's hand a light squeeze for emphasis and then starting back the way they came, following alongside the now-damp path. Outkast glanced down at the joined hands as they trudged along, and while she did all other thoughts seemed to set themselves aside for just one, simple little musing...
"...His paws are really warm."
That thought, as unrelated as it was to whatever they had set out to do, brought a light flush of red to her cheeks in the near inky gloom. Why was she so wrapped up in something this trivial? Weren't they supposed to be discussing the best course of action should things go wrong? Or thier plans for obtaining the Pewter badge? And what about teaching that vulpix a fire move and meeting with that Rai-kun fellow in Cerulean like he had asked of her in that letter? Granted she had a plan for teaching the fox, she'd use it during a battle to get things started -as a good workout's often the best way to get that fire going- and hopefully it would emerge on it's own.
Either way she had better things to think about. But that didn't help her from straying right back to the fact that holding hands in general felt, well, nice. Outkast hadn't realized how cold she was until now... Her partner didn't seem to mind either, and figuring this out helped her relax a lot more. Come to think of it, his hand had gotten a little warmer over time and he seemed lost in thought, which made her wonder what was on his mind...?
Yet, when amythests met ruby eyes they parted quickly, back to being afraid of finding out oneanother's thoughts despite eariler curiousity.
"Looks like we're back in town, the centre's not too far off." The trainer informed and so the two moved to keep up a brisk pace, which changed upon what they spied in the near distance...
"Blissey, double team then double edge while you use reflect on the doorway Chansey. We can't let them get inside!"
At the sight of not only the hooded thief in question, but the center's medical team fending them off and worse yet, that hazel-eyed rocketeer from eariler?! in the midst of a hail of poison pins and the tiny croc's relentless tackles against the barrier the two egg-holding pokemon were doing thier best, but even Outkast from her approaching distance could see the fatigue in thier eyes and by the time she got within battiling distance, she had all but lost her breath as suddenly she fell to her knees, for some reason the girl could swear she could.. feel thier combined tire. But she had to shake it off -the staff needed help. This did not go unnoticed by the ferret who quickly took the young girl's hand and easily hoisted her to her feet with a concerned look -she seemed to be getting a lot of those lately. "You gonna be alright?"
While the trainer collected herself and nodded to him her answer he got straight to work, leaping into the fray to tackle the bee to the surprise of nurse Joy and the offending bandits. "Ah! Shinobu what are you doing here?! It's dangerous --you shouldn't be outside right now!" She called out, hands raising to clasp together in her typical fit of worry. Chansey also called out in agreement, the pokemon's speech reaching the girl's ears once again as if it were regular human speech.
"That's right Shinobu! quickly, you should get inside!" But the trainer shook her head in refusal. "I'm here to catch that punk who made off with the totodile, but I got a bone to pick with this woman too so i'm not going anywhere. Alright Zan, let's help blissey's double-edge with cut!" And that he did, the beedrill sent reeling back after a blow to the midsection from the pink pokemon and a fresh set of cuts courtesy of the white one. The thief's attention was caught by this however and totodile's focus was soon redirected toward the newcomer.
"Get that cat outta the way with tackle!" And the little monster gave a running start to fly into the ferret as a dark yellow blur, just as he turned to see what was rushing towards him. "Ahh! Zan-kun quick -knock him off and use doubleteam." Said fighter did as told with a flair all his own, rolling with the momentum from the water-type's attack, then using that force to kick the creature away toward the beedrill who was currently racing toward the fatigued chansey. The insect had just as little time to react as it's trainer did and both rockets yelled out in frustration upon seeing thier fighters in a heap. But the battle certainly wasn't over yet. The female rocket issued another order, followed by the younger male.
"Beedrill, get up off your ass and let's raid that centre already! start on that reflect!"
"Totodile you too! distract the lot with whirlpool!"
"Wh-what!?" Outkast had to do a double-take then, did she hear that right?! whirlpool?! but that was a move water types usually learned in thier later stages.. wasn't it!?
"Aa-uwha!"
But apparently not, Zan's surprised cry bringing her attention back to witness as he and chansey were now surrounded by the swirling waves of fast moving water... It wasn't nearly the height of an expert's example, but it was tall enough to keep the two from being able to retaliate while blissey caught her breath, leaving the poison type free to do it's master's bidding unchallenged. This wasn't good. "Okay, plan b..." The trainer took out another pokeball. "Okay vulpix, you ready for a rematch? Round two! go!" With a spin the ball was tossed and in a flash the firefox returned, only to retreat into the trainer's arms with a small whimper. "I don't know if I can do this..."
The trainer gently placed her hands against his soft fur, holding the little one's face close to her own with a reassuring smile. "You can vulpix. Trust me, I won't let you down." During that moment, as if her kind words had set a spell in motion the vulpix' doubts and worries slowly but surely started to dissolve in a flood of resolve, pouring out from such a determined human.
" O-Okay... I'll do my best!" And he dashed headlong toward the beedrill. His path was quick to get blocked by the threatening spray of water narrowly missed, and the totodile follwed shortly after in what was surely a build up to another hard-hitting tackle-
"Blissey swipe that pest away!"
-except a pink blur zoomed in to stand between the fire and water types and little gator met with the back of said pokemon's paw, leaving it bouncing off to the side in a a right daze.
"Thanks nurse Joy!"
"No problem, now let's end this. Nobody attacks my sick and injured without a slap on the hand from me." The purple-haired one couldn't help the flash of nervousness that ran through her then, if pummeling the enemy with her staff was Joy's idea of a "slap on the hand" then she'd hate to find out what a full-out beating entailed... "Okay vulpix, just let the heat build up inside you...don't stress about the fire -just use what you know best. Let's go with quick attack!"
"Yes!" The fox called back, thanking the blissey for the assist before breaking into a sprint straight for the bee, who would see but a red-brown blur fast approaching before meeting face-first with the damp ground beneath it.
"Oh, so you didn't learn your lesson the first time? Alright beedrill, fury swipes!" Getting off into a light hover, the bee darted to and fro whilst jabbing at the smaller monster with an almost frantic pace, it would seem that the home party wasn't the only ones feeling the drain -and vulpix was growing aware of it with every missed hit, which was all of them. "You're doing great vulpix, let's turn it around with a few tail whips shall we?" "Yes master!" And the light-footed fox took the opportunity to slowly move in which soon had the tables turning in it's favor, the beedrill stumbling back with it's spikes raised in order to block whatever it could. Things at this point were going so well in fact, that both trainer and pokemon failed to notice that glint in the insect's blood-red eyes. The rockette's angred scowl too, soon turned into a wicked grin.
"Right where we want'em... Beedrill, pin-missle full blast!"
"A-ah.. Oh no! Vulpix!"
And by the time the canine could leap back it was too late, the little fox tripped into a roll admist a hailstorm of needles, batting away whatever it could with it's tail -which it was moments eariler using to press an attack... Surprise with a twinge of fear ran through Shinobu like ice as she witnessed the poor vulpine struggle with getting whatever needles it could out of it's fur, and the bee used this lapse in attention to bat it further away admist both the rockets' laughter. "Tsktsk pipsqueak, looks like your new pincushion's having a little trouble- huh? Hey, you listenin to me or do you want some of this too!?"
"S-shinobu?!" Zan called out, still trapped alongside blissey in the whirlpool, which had been waning some but unfortunately it wasn't enough to attempt escape without putting themselves at risk. All he could do was continue to watch while the girl fell to her knees, arms wrapped around herself as if suffering from some sort of invisible ailment. "Ugh..."
"... what is this stinging feeling? It feels as if i'm slowly burning up from the inside out, but not like fire... more like when beedrill stabbed me eariler!"
"Vulpix...?" She muttered out, looking beyond the grass under her toward the fighter who surprisingly enough, also looked like they too were in great pain. "It... it hurts master, I can barely move. i-i'm sorry I failed you.."
"Looks like I poisoned it this time, hmph. That'll teach the two of you not to mess with your betters. But just to be sure you get the point..." The killer bee hovered slowly past the stunned fox and towards Outkast now, already drawing back the left needle when it stopped in front of her. "Poison sting." it's trainer commanded and the latterpart of it's namesake struck just below the chest once again without further notice, tearing through repaired jacket and shirt to reveal bandages fast turning red.
"S-shinobu..." The white pokemon muttered, a paw raising to clutch his own fur as a jolt of pain rushed through him. blissey sensing his sudden distress moved to place an arm under his free shoulder for support, unable to help but wonder. "Why is this zangoose reacting so...? And that poor vulpix... Wait! The vulpix --it's.." All eyes were on the trainer now save for blissey, who watched as the pokemon seemed to emulate it's trainer's pain... Or was it perhaps the other way around?
Shinobu slowly opened her blood-stained lips as if to scream in anguish, but the sound that emerged did not come from her -it came from the firefox, which is where the rest of the party's attention finally flew to, before everyone dove for the dirt amidst jets of flame spouting from the monster like a sporadic firehose. In an instant panic ensued amongst all, mainly the rocketeers who now struggled to fall back as they frantically called for the return of thier fighters, who were not able to do so so easily from vulpix's now driven -and firey- pursuit. "W-when the fuck did that runt learn to breathe fire like that!? shit! Beedrill return!! return!!" The totodile, suffering from a few burns to the back had a particularly hard time getting around the beserk and still-wailing vulpine, and before it could even reach recall distance the whirpool it supported finally waned enough to let the two trapped pokemon free and the zangoose wasted no time with dealing a swift blow over the weakened crocodile's head, knocking it out. The beedrill was not so lucky compared to it's teammate. Where totodile held a natural advantage over fire the insect possesed the opposite and tonight it would feel the burn it inflicted upon vulpix in the most litteral way possible. The poison type barely missed the brunt of the flames while still gaining severe burns to it's sides, but it's wings were not spared. By the time the hazel-eyed rockette could recall it's partner they were in flames and had to be put out before completing the hasty retreat, shouting curses while silently promising that not only would it not be thier last meet but next time they crossed paths, the rocket member would make that trainer suffer.
Blissey tended to Outkast as best she could, helping the girl to her knees while she pulled out another pokeball, the other hand resting against her head.
"I-I have to help him... he's in so m-much p-pain... He keeps screaming for it to stop..." The pink pocket monster had to do a double-take. Even she couldn't understand the poor fox right now -how was this human able to?! The thought was set aside but promised to be brought to Joy's attention later as the next pokeball practally tumbled from the girl's hand, to reveal the oddly coloured ghastly who gasped in horror at the sight of his beloved friend. Before he could ask though Shinobu shook her head slowly. "Later Garuda.." she wheezed out, blood finding it's way onto the grass from her hacked up coughs. "Please, help him..." She pointed to the vulpix and the ghost nodded with a stern face quite unlike his usual tone, knowing exactly what to do. There would be time for jokes and laughs during a battle, but not tonight.
Nurse joy watched as the ghost manuvered about the fire the fox spat, even fading in and out of visibility when the flames got too close, although it seemed as it if had trouble with that. as it made it's approach inversed eyes lit up and got to work, the hypnosis growing stronger with distance and time until finally the fellow pocket monster keeled onto it's side, sinking into a thoughtless sleep.
The remaining rocketeer tried to make a break for it but was tackled by the cat ferret, the force of the blow knocking off the boy's hood to reveal a youthful face barely older than Shinobu's, but this is not what drew a gasp of surprise from the nurse, trainer and pokemon alike, it was the boy himself... Those eyes, that hair! He looked exactly like...
"Rai-kun?" Joy questioned. The rocket's eyes widened then and all fell silent. It was short lived though and with an unexpected burst of vigour he wrenched himself from Zan's grip and fled into the dark before the pokemon could give chase, leaving the totodile behind.
"It... but it can't...be..." Shinobu sighed, the colours of her suroundings all blurring into a muddy darkness as gravity drew her face into a pillow of grass, the muffled shouts of her name fading from her ears.

AN: My gawd it's been a while... For anyone reading this who started from chapter one, just to let you know the style has changed in more recently written chapters, which you'll see soon as I upload them. This one was written quite a long while ago, and I only touched it up slightly(replacing certain words to make it flow a little bit better, things like that) so yeah, just thought it'd be important to get that out there.
Well well well, not even gotten her first badge yet and our trainer's already gaining enemies! So much for a smooth cross-region trip huh? At least she's warmed up to her pokémon some, namly that derp of a catferret. Seems like there's potential afterall!
