The three “shinigami” walked up to the first house on their long route. Ryuuzaki kept encouraging Raito to walk faster, as they had only limited time. The detective reached out a long finger to push gently at the doorbell. A few moments later, a very plump lady in a pumpkin costume answered the door, smiling brightly. “Trick or treat,” Raito grumped and L whispered stoically.
“Happy Halloween!” The woman reached into her candy dish and was about to put some treats in the two men’s paper bags, when she stopped short and stared at them, “Aren’t you a bit old to be trick or treating?”
“Yes,” Raito frowned in the same instant that Ryuuzaki smiled, “Absolutely not.”
This confused the lady more than anything.
“Please, we have a long way to travel tonight,” L shifted nervously on his feet.
“Oh. Um. All right then, here,” she gave them both the tiniest handfuls of candy she could manage.
“Thank you very much,” the older man said, but he had already begun dragging his handcuffed friend to the next house.
Looking over his shoulder, Raito noticed that the much younger children who had just reached the woman’s house received several large handfuls of candy. “Well that’s not very kind, even if we are too old for this.”
“I expected about the same reaction as that from most people tonight. It is very disappointing, but she is very lucky that she decided to give us some candy.” L did not need to glance back to know what had progressed.
“Oh no,” Raito moaned, “Please tell me you’re not planning to actually play tricks on people.”
“Certainly I can come up with much more exciting tricks than pelting houses with unborn chickens or bath tissue. So as to save on time, I have thought up several different tricks beforehand, so that we can swiftly move from house to house without delay.”
“Whyyyy?” the Yagami boy begged, straightening one of the horns on his costume.
“It is called trick or treat, is it not, Raito~kun?”
“I suppose so…”
Ryuuzaki did not answer. He was too busy saying “Trick or treat” to the owner of the next house.
