The silence in the room was so thick, it was nearly tangible. After a few seconds, Usagi timidly looked up, afraid to see disgust and anger written on their faces. But she could read nothing but shock in their expressions.
“Seiya? The Starlight? Seiya, Seiya? The one we know?” Makoto was floored. Why was this such a bad thing? Hadn’t he and Usagi been friends?
“And that is why you are so upset?” Ami couldn’t understand why her friend was so worked up over a dream.
“What did he do?” Minako had stars in her eyes thinking about the dreamy idols from their past.
“He didn’t do anything.” Usagi blushed knowing what direction Minako’s mind was probably heading, feeling guilty enough without adding that to the pile.
“So let me get this straight. You have a dream where a guy you used to know shows up and you recognize him. What’s the big deal?” Rei could tell there was something more to this situation, something Usagi didn’t want to tell them.
“But I’m supposed to dream about Mamo-chan.” Usagi whispered in a voice so low and small it was almost inaudible. The other scouts still looked confused, but it clicked for the more intuitive Rei. She knelt in front of her princess and looked up into her face.
“Usagi, Mamoru wanted you to be happy. He didn’t put any conditions on that happiness. And thinking about someone else doesn’t mean that you’re being unfaithful to Mamoru, that you don’t still love him.” At Rei’s words, Minako understood what was going on.
“Maybe your dream is trying to tell you something. That it’s time you moved on from Mamoru. You’re allowed to live your life, Usagi, and that means boys.”
“Maybe to you Minako.” Makoto laughed. “Usagi, why were you afraid to tell us about this? Did you think we wouldn’t understand; that we’d be upset? Like I said, we want you to be happy too.”
The three outgoing scouts were smiling at her with love and encouragement shining in their eyes, but Usagi couldn’t keep her gaze from moving to Ami’s face. She knew Ami loved her too, but Ami had been almost as vocal about her disapproval of Seiya as Haruka had. Well, not of Seiya himself, but of his attempts to win her from Mamoru. Amy had been with her the longest, and her opinion was extremely important to Usagi. The longer Ami was silent, the more the terror built up inside the blonde woman once more. Tears pricked at the back of her eyes. If she lost Ami’s friendship, her respect because of this Usagi would never forgive herself, or the scouts who had forced her to tell them. She was about to run out of the room to shed her tears when Ami spoke.
“Usagi, Mamoru was a good man. We all loved him. He protected us time and time again, and he looked out for us scouts like an older brother. He was part of our family.” She sighed and looked directly into her friend’s deep, blue eyes. “But Mamoru is gone, and he isn’t coming back. You are here, and you have a duty to his memory, to your promise to be happy and live your life. If that happiness is in the arms of another man that loves you, so be it. No one here will judge you for wanting to be loved, least of all me. I think we all understand that need.” Ami felt her own sadness rising in her soul, but she pushed it aside. Usagi needed her right now.
Usagi couldn’t believe it. Not one of her friends thought she was being disloyal in her dreams. It was as if she carried two giant weights on her back and one had been lifted. She felt lighter knowing her friends still loved her, but that other weight was still there: the weight of guilt. Even if her friends seemed to accept that Usagi might be thinking about another man, she could not. Mamo-chan had been her whole world. They were to rule together through the ages. How could one turn their back on that kind of a destiny in only a few short years? Her heart belonged to Mamo-chan; didn’t it?
She was pulled out of her reverie by Minako’s abrupt laughter.
“Oh, I get it. Don’t tell Haruka!” The senshi all began to laugh. Everyone knew about Haruka’s dislike of the Starlights, Seiya in particular.
It was late, the dregs of ice cream sat, melted in the bottom of several bowls. Glasses were scattered about the room. The TV was still softly playing in the background. Ami was curled up in a chair, Rei and Makoto sprawled out on the floor, and Usagi was cradled in Minako’s arms on the couch. She heard the soft, even breathing of her senshi and she knew they were all asleep. Very slowly, careful not to wake her, Usagi lifted Minako’s arms off of her and slid off the couch. She retrieved her unopened overnight bag out of Makoto’s bedroom and slipped into the kitchen. Usagi found a piece of paper and a pen. She wrote a short note, folded it in half, and stood it up on the counter so the girls would see it right away. At the door she pulled on her shoes and coat and silently left the apartment.
It was too late to catch the bus, and Usagi did not relish the idea of walking all the way back to her apartment in the middle of the night, so she pulled out her cell phone and called a cab. Collapsing on her bed fully clothed, Usagi fell asleep just minutes after entering her apartment.
She stood in the park near her childhood home. The park held so many memories, some good, and some bad. The sun shone down on her, warming her skin. Her long bubble-tails blew gently in the wind. The cherry trees were in bloom and their soft pink petals filled the air. For the first time in recent memory, even in a dream, Usagi was completely at peace. The sun filled her soul with warmth and light causing her to glow, just like the true moon that she was. As the wind blew against her face she heard his quiet voice whisper in her ear. ‘Be happy.’
Makoto woke up with a crick her in neck and Rei’s arm in her face. With bleary eyes she scanned the room. The first thing she noticed was the mess. At least she didn’t have any classes today, so she’d have some time before work to clean up. The second thing she noticed was the number of girls in the room. One, two, three, four. One, two, three, four. Where was Usagi? Makoto’s maternal nature kicked in, where was she? She flew into the bedroom, into the bathroom, into the kitchen. Usagi was gone. She was just about to rush back in to the living room to alert the sleeping sailors, but her eyes lighted on the piece of folded paper sitting on the counter.
Dear Mako-chan, Ami-chan, Rei-chan, Minako-chan,
Thank you for helping me, for understanding. I love you, all of you. But even though you all seem to feel it’s time for me to move on, I can’t. Please understand. This is something I have to work out on my own. Don’t worry about me so much. I’ll be fine; I promise. You have your own lives to live, after all.
Usagi
P.S. Don’t let Ami be late for school; she’ll never forgive you. ;P
Sighing, Makoto moved back into the living room, quietly cleaning up the scattered dishes. Minako hugged her arms to herself, the soft clinking sounds Makoto was making filtering through her consciousness and gently rousing her. Something was wrong, missing. She never wrapped her arms around herself in her sleep. What was supposed to be in her arms?
“Usagi?!” Minako bolted upright, searching the room for her twin.
“Shhh. She left a note.” Makoto handed the note to Minako.
The noise woke Ami and Rei who found Makoto sitting on the couch with her arm wrapped around Minako as tears slid down the blonde’s cheeks. They all read and reread the note in silence. It seemed their emergency sleep over had been a failure. At least they were more equipped to deal with the problem in the future.
