Chapter Five
The rain fell heavily to the ground as the heavens above wept openly. Tonight wasn’t a night to be wandering around in but something that he couldn’t quite explain was pulling him to the courtyard.
Conrart was silent as he walked, stopping when he saw a familiar figure standing in the courtyard with their face tilted up towards the heavens above. The clothes told him that it was Zach, but that was impossible. Zach was dead and had been dead for twenty years now.
Unless he was dreaming. Yeah, that made sense. He was simply dreaming of his dead lover because Yuri’s sister reminded him so much of Zach due to her looks and attitude. “I wonder if the heavens are crying because of sorrow or from joy.” Zach said, his voice the same tenor tone that Conrart remembered so well.
“Why sorrow?” Conrart questioned.
The young man looked at the brunette with calm eyes before answering, “Didn’t you feel it when I had that vision?” Zach looked back up towards the clouds. “Of course not, no one ever did.”
“What’s going to happen, Zach?” Conrart questioned.
“You’ll find out in the morning.”
There was so much that he wanted to say and do, but he found himself realizing that there wasn’t enough time. “I’m dreaming, aren’t I?” Conrart asked finally.
Zach smiled a little before replying with a grin, “Yep, but I’m still able to answer questions that you want to answers to.”
Anger flashed in Conrart’s eyes as he thought about everything he wanted to say. “You knew about everything!” Conrart finally said as he shook with anger.
“Some of it.” Zach answered as the rain stopped falling and snow took its place. “I didn’t realize that the new Moah would be a magnet for danger.”
Conrart shivered as the temperature dropped and stared as his breath became visible in the cold air. “We found your journal and there’s now two people in the castle that can read it.” Conrart told the dead man.
A smile spread across Zach’s face as he answered, “I’m not worried. I actually look forward to seeing it again.”
The brunette frowned slightly as he realized that Zach’s voice was changing to a more feminine sounding voice. As he glanced at the man’s chest, he saw two mounds forming beneath his shirt. “I knew that I would die and I didn’t want to tell you what I had seen. I knew that Julia would die and I would have told you but she swore me to secrecy.” Conrart frowned as Zach’s voice kept growing more feminine as his body began to change.
“I don’t blame you for that. I just want to know what’s happening now.”
“Brother, Brother, what do you want to know that my crimson eyes should show?”
Conrart’s breath caught when Zach looked at him, seeing that he now looked almost exactly like Jaela. “She’s your reincarnation.” Conrart breathed. “You allowed yourself to be reincarnated to protect Yuri and His Eminence.”
Zach/Jaela smiled softly before s/he answered patiently as he pointed to the north, “Look.”
Conrart stared with wide eyes at the looming shadow that slowly approached, seeing the insanity that glowed within the creatures eyes. “Did you know, Conrart, that there are actually still Muzaku that despite half breeds like us and even despise those of double-black coloring?” Zach/Jaela questioned patiently.
“You think Yuri and His Eminence are in danger.”
“I don’t think they’re in danger, Lord Weller. I know they’re in danger but it will take time for the danger to make itself known. Even now it manifests itself as a shadow to my visions but it’ll see me and direct its attention away from Yuri and his friend.”
“I’m not losing you again.” Conrart answered as he grabbed Zach/Jaela’s arm.
“Conrart, I’m dead.” Zach’s voice spoke before Jaela’s voice took over. “I’m just the female recreation of his body for his soul.”
Conrart’s vision started to fail him as the snow fell harder and obstructed Zach/Jaela from his view. “Zach!” Conrart shouted.
“I love you.” Zach whispered with echoes of Jaela’s own voice mixed in.
A gasp escaped Conrart’s lips as he opened his eyes and stared silently up at the ceiling. He admitted to having had weird dreams in the past but he was certain that those dreams were nothing compared to the one he had just had.
He was silent as he slipped out of bed and quietly got dressed before leaving his bedroom. Breakfast wasn’t for another few hours but he knew that he wouldn’t be able to get back to sleep even if he wanted to.
His brown eyes widened slightly when he saw Jaela waiting for him with a calm look in her crimson eyes. “Lady Jaela…” Conrart said softly before bowing slightly.
“You don’t need to do that, you know.” Jaela said as she leaned against a wall and looked at him out of the corner of her eye. “If you keep doing that, I’m just gonna call you Lord Weller.”
Conrart smiled a bit before answering, “Of course. Are you lost?”
“No, I just have this feeling that I’ve been in this castle before.” Jaela smiled faintly. “Then something said, ‘Go this way’ and here you are.”
This woman was Zach’s reincarnation? While he could see similarities, he wondered why she somewhat resembled Zach while all Yuri had from Julia was her desire for peace. Was it possible that Zach wanted them to know that he had come back and that he may not have forgotten? “I see.” Conrart said calmly. “Did you sleep well?”
“Well enough. I woke up maybe around one this morning.”
“Did you have trouble getting back to sleep? All you have to do is ask and someone will-”
“No, I’ve just never slept very well. Three hours a night is all I’ve managed since I was sixteen. When Yuri and I were children, I only managed about an hour and a half to two hours a night.”
Yet she managed to survive on such little sleep? Come to think of it, perhaps that’s why Yuri seemed nervous when she hadn’t woken up after a couple of hours. The young man knew full well that the woman just didn’t sleep very often and anything more than the time he was familiar with made him nervous. “What do you have planned for today?” Conrart questioned as they started walking.
Jaela looked thoughtful for a moment before answering, “Not a whole lot, actually. Explore the castle and maybe check out the town.”
“Do you think that Yuri-Heika will let you out of his sight for that long?”
“I’m counting on that damn paperwork of his for that part so don’t tell him.” There was laughter in her voice as if she enjoyed the idea of sneaking away from her brother. “Nah, don’t worry. Yu-nii-chan knows how I am when it comes to places I’m not familiar with.”
Conrart nodded in understanding before commenting lightly, “Yuri never said that he had a sister. Nobody in his immediate family said anything about you either.”
Jaela smiled softly before answering, “After I was taken from them, Bob told them to act as if I had never existed. Well, he told Shoma and Jennifer so it’s safe to assume that they told Sho-nii-san and Yu-nii-chan to act as if I never existed.”
“I don’t imagine that they took those orders with much happiness.”
“I don’t think so. We might not act like it, but Yu-nii-chan and I were probably best friends when we were children.”
Much like Gwendal and Anissina, Conrart mused. The red-haired woman may have scared the living hell out of Gwen, but they were still best friends that bailed each other out of trouble. How often did they bail each other out of trouble, the brunette wondered as they stepped outside into the slightly chilled morning air.
He noticed the woman stiffening beside him when one of the soldiers that was on patrol duty stopped and glared at the woman. “Is there a problem?” Conrart questioned calmly.
The guard looked surprised before shaking his head. “Not at all, Lord Weller. I was just-” The guard looked anxious.
“This is Maoh-Heika’s younger sister. If anything happens to her then Yuri-Heika will more than likely hunt down whoever it was that allowed her to become harmed.” Conrart Informed the guard with a warning look.
“O-Of course!”
Jaela frowned slightly as she watched the guard quickly walk away before moving away from Conrart. “You didn’t need to do that,” she said with a frown. “I don’t mind letting people know that I don’t need Yuri to fight my battles for me and that I’m capable of fighting my own battles.”
Conrart shrugged a little before answering, “Yuri-Heika is my godson and I have sworn to protect him. Because he loves his family, I do what I can to protect every member of his family.”
“Even Shori?”
“Even Shori.”
“Wow, he must have you do a bunch of stupid shit.”
Conrart smiled softly before answering, “He is the next Maoh of Earth. You must feel rather proud having two brothers that are both a Moah.”
The woman shrugged, indifference showing in her eyes as she answered, “If they do something that I don’t like, I’ll let them know.”
Somehow he didn’t doubt that she would. Zach hadn’t been one to let anybody get away with anything and from what he had observed when it came to the woman and others, she was the exact same way. That could be either a good or bad thing although he deeply suspected that it wouldn’t necessarily be a good thing.
Shinou, he prayed silently, have mercy upon whoever pissed the woman off.
