She kept seeing blood on her hands. “It was the right thing...” she told herself. “You will get used to it.” But she kept seeing their faces. Children’s faces. Looking up at her with big eyes. And fangs jutting from their mouths. The screams as she staked them were horrible. She had known these children; seen them in the streets of her village. She knew their parents.
And Mary. Dressed as she had last seen her, looking like the same old Mary; but not. That had been difficult to do. But she had steeled herself and done it because there was no place in this world for vampire children. And they weren’t even true vampires, just puppets to their master.
Killing him was much easier. The merciless bastard was sleeping peacefully, a small smirk on his pale lips. No doubt he thought he was safe as could be. She enjoyed hearing his screams. She envisioned all the people he and his monster had taken as she hammered the wooden stake into his heart; his hands reaching out to choke her. When it was finished and they were all dust, she would not cry. But her hands were shaking. Shaking, even when she came home and changed clothes in her secret place and bumped into Dathan coming into the house. Their little spat was a good excuse for her to show emotion and not hide the shaking. But here she was, safe in her room, seeing small vampire faces and still not crying.
Killing the first beast had been difficult even though it was smaller and younger than Hyaku and its mind powers were not up to par. She had watched D fight Hyaku and listened to his brag about his poisonous blood. D would live but a bite for her would most certainly be fatal. Once she figured out the secret of its blood, she used what she had learned from her father’s science books and figured out the “antidote” to counteract the poison.
These events passed through her mind as she crept downstairs to listen to her brother and D talking. Dathan was telling him far too much about her! Suddenly she was furious and she ran down the stairs and out the door.
Katherine took a few deep breaths of fresh air and calmed herself as she walked toward the orchard. It was a beautiful, breezy day but she didn’t take much pleasure in it. She heard D come up behind her and spoke up before he could. “My brother does not understand me. He cannot understand me. Sometimes, I think he does not want to.”
“What is it you want, Katie?”
She would not look at him but after a pause she answered. “Freedom.”
“Where would you go?”
“Anywhere. Everywhere. I want to see things I have only read about. I want to see the ocean and the desert. The full moon at night on an open prairie. But these things are ‘too dangerous for a girl like me.’ At least your life is interesting, you do as you please.” She finally turned and looked him in the eye. She was herself again, a young lady. “Let me run away with you, D” she said jokingly, “Of course, I am sure you would make a lousy husband for any poor girl.”
But D was not amused. “What is it about me that is so disgusting to you?” Though she had been kind to him during his stay, the snide comments she threw in now and again led him to believe that she, in fact, despised him.
Her expression turned solemn. “Your looks may have won the hearts of many a girl, and landed you in their beds too, no doubt, but can that beautiful face alone stop a vampire? Can those long delicate fingers kill a monster with a snap? In the end, it means nothing. I, too, am cursed with beauty. Everything has been handed to me and that makes me weak. What am I worth, really? So, your beauty does not impress me and judging by what you told my brother, your fighting skills are lacking if a human can defeat a monster that you, a dhampir, cannot.”
Her face was flushed from her harsh speech and she did not flinch as she stared him dead in the eye. She was waiting for him to get angry, but he only looked at her and said, “You have a low opinion of me, Katie. But I wish you good luck and hope that if you taste your freedom one day, it does not turn bitter in your mouth. Good day.” He left her there in the orchard staring at his back as he took off on his horse. Once he was a safe distance away, D couldn’t help the tiny smile that graced his lips. “She has much spirit. I like her.”
“Yes, but don’t you wonder: how did she know that you didn’t defeat the monster when she left the house before you told her brother?”
