Sadik awoke. His eyes were accosted by blinding darkness. He was warm and comfortable but he felt a presence very close to his body. All of a sudden he remembered that his guest, Heracles, had slept in his bed with him that night. A moan stirred Sadik into alertness and he realized that the young man was clinging to him, body pressed tightly against Sadik’s, his legs conforming perfectly to the crook of the Turk’s knees. Sadik was taken aback but couldn’t bear to disengage himself from the Greek’s tight embrace after remembering that he had had a couple of bad days as well as the whole running away from home thing to begin with. Sadik snuggled back into the covers and fell asleep again. The morning sun blazed in thick bars over the Turk’s face and he struggled out of bed, dressing and rushing out the door to go see Grandma, and his adorable new roommate.
He slipped inside and took a seat at the back of the shop, his usual table. The instant he sat down this morning, Grandma was at his elbow, the steaming cup of jasmine tea filled his nostrils. She sat down across from him, her head resting on a frail-looking fist.
“So.” She started, her glassy eyes boring into his own, “Who is it this time?”
“Hmm?” He looked up from the fragrant cup of tea into her searching face.
“I know there’s someone new in your life, who is it?”
“Heh….” He laughed nervously, “There’s no one, really.”
“Don’t lie to me, young man.” She reprimanded. He avoided her gaze. Even though she wasn’t his real grandmother, everyone he knew called her that and no one could escape her reprimands or her inquisitive all-knowing gaze. Sadik sighed.
“Yes, there is someone new in my life.” He blushed slightly.
“Well, out with it then.” She pressed him, wrapping her old fingers tightly around a steaming cup of tea.
“She’s beautiful.” He mused, a slight flush coming to his cheeks.
“Ahh…” Grandma’s eyes flashed, probably thinking of her past.
“Though, I’ve only met her once or twice, I can’t forget her. Her hair is brown and wavy, it smells like sandalwood. She has the most stunning blue eyes, the color of the sea. Her lips are….” He trailed off, enjoying the farce he was playing off. For yes, it was true, he was in love, deeply so, but with no woman. The person he had fallen hopelessly in love with was a man. And now that same man stepped from behind the counter to assist new customers who had just come in through the door. He took their orders and scurried to the back to fill them.
Sadik caught the motion out of the corner of his eye and closed his eyes with a slight smile.
“I see what’s going on here young man.” Grandma whispered, wanting to keep the conversation between the two of them. Her eyes shifted to Heracles and then back to Sadik, flashing knowingly. Sadik was struck dumb.
“He’s the one, isn’t he?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about Grandma…”
“He is, isn’t he? The hair, the eyes, exactly the same as you’ve described that your lady friend possesses.” Sadik swallowed hard. Pushed to his limit. He couldn’t hide it anymore.
“Yes, ok, fine. Yes he is. I love him.” He whispered harshly, “I can’t get him out of my head. It’s like a disease, a crippling affliction. I haven’t even known him a week and I am hopelessly, painfully in love. Grandma, you must help me. What do I do?” The old lady pondered a little while as Sadik sipped nervously at his tea. Finally she spoke,
“Love is something that one feels, not something that one can be forced into. That being said, there is nothing, tea or otherwise that I can give you that can interfere when it comes to…affairs of the heart. This will have to be something that you yourself figure out, my dear boy.”
Sadik hung his head a little as the old woman poured him another cup of tea. He was mulling things over. Finally, he bid her goodbye, called Heracles out to wish him luck at work and turned towards the door.
“Oh! I almost forgot!” Heracles piped up, “Grandma says ‘Hello’!” He beamed at the Turk. “I forgot to tell you so I’m doing it now.” The Greek smiled. Sadik smiled back, an endearing look in his eyes.
“See you tonight, huh?” He swung the door shut with a ding.
Sadik was in the kitchen when Heracles came home, a light rapping at the door startled him a little. He opened the door and admitted his guest. Heracles removed his shoes and sauntered into the kitchen, a big smile on his face.
“Today was good. She really put me to work, but she’s so nice!” He beamed.
“Since you’re going to be living with me from now on, I figured I’d actually give you a key to the place. Also, we need to find you some clothes. I don’t mind you borrowing mine, but we’re going to run out a lot quicker with 2 people digging through my closet every morning.”
“Living with you from now on?” Heracles questioned.
“What?” Sadik turned on him playfully, “You don’t want to live with me?”
“No, it’s not that, I just….I feel like I’m imposing, that’s all.” Heracles looked down, blushing. Sadik left the stove and walked over to his friend. He knew barely anything about this young man but he knew that he always wanted to see him smile, wanted to hear him laugh. He wanted to see and hear him do other things too…..Banishing those thoughts from his mind he spoke up,
“Remember what I had said to you after I saved your butt from Calp the first day we met?” Heracles shook his head.
“I said that no one should ever feel like they’re not needed. And…I need you, Heracles.” The young man looked up into Sadik’s searching face, that sweet smile returning. The Greek beamed and kissed Sadik on the cheek.
“Thanks. I really needed that assurance. Plus, I’m the one who should be saying that I need you. I mean, you were the one who hatched this elaborate plan that got me off the street, that got me this amazing job at the tea shop with Grandma. And speaking of Grandma, she told me to give you this.” Heracles handed over a folded note to Sadik and went to go put his things away. The Turk opened the piece of paper. In Grandma’s swirly clear script he read:
“You’d better take care of that boy. He really cares for you, you know. All he could talk about all day was if you were ok, how you were doing, what you were up to. If you break his heart I’ll personally come over to your place and give you a piece of my mind. He only wants to see you smile. Like you used to.
~ Grandma”
Sadik smiled and refolded the paper, shoving it in his pocket. He checked on the meat and veggies stewing on the stove. Heracles padded into the kitchen, shirtless and worried.
“Sadik, you don’t have anymore clean shirts. We should do some laundry before tomorrow….” The Turk swallowed hard, his eyes glued to that muscular frame.
“I…yes…we….should….laundry…yes…..” He tore his gaze away and turned off the stove. He couldn’t take it anymore. Heracles looked confused and stared into Sadik’s face, wondering what was going on in that foreign mind.
“Heracles?”
“Yes?”
“Do you…like me?”
“I…well…I suppose…I mean, we’re friends, though I haven’t known you outside of a week. But, I guess I do.”
“And that kiss earlier…” Sadik touched his cheek thoughtfully.
“That was just,,umm….”The Greek faltered, shuffling his feet nervously.
“Do you want to do it again? I mean, would you…you know…kiss me again…..” Sadik questioned. He was being very bold and forward. He wasn’t usually like this at all but he couldn’t wait any longer. He had to know….
