Chapter 5 – Kidnap
Soubi walked into the house, noting that the lights weren’t on, assuming the Zero’s and Kio weren’t back yet but not feeling anything out of the ordinary.
“Ritsuka?” he questioned as he pushed open the bedroom door, his foot crunching on something in the darkness. He looked down as he flicked the switch. His body stilled, turned cold as his heart stopped in his chest and his breath caught in his throat.
The room was empty, the blankets strewn across the bed and onto the floor, pills scattered everywhere with the bottles, the water spilt on the floor with shards of smashed glass…and blood. His hand acted alone without thought then, calling Kio. No answer but…he could hear it ringing.
He tried to keep calm, to breathe as he followed to noise back through to the living space. It wasn’t that big an apartment, the door and fake wall around the bed had only been added to give Ritsuka privacy. He pushed the outer door open, slowly, fearing the sight to greet his eyes. Kio lay slumped against the railing, Youji’s body thrown across the washing machine and Natsuo half down the stairs. He went to each, checking they were breathing, checking they were alive. Kio looked up at him when he touched him.
“Sou..chan. Ritsuka, they took Ritsuka!” he forced out.
“Who Kio? Who took him?” he asked quickly. He didn’t have time but he knew he had to take care of them before he went after Ritsuka but Kio was shaking his head.
“Don’t know them,” he said and looked around confused. “What happened?”
Soubi sighed and pulled him to his feet. He was the least hurt and Soubi knew it was likely Zero had protected him. Youji coughed as Kio fell against the washer. “Soubi…it was Beatless. Natsuo…”
Soubi looked down the stairs and left Kio to stand alone as he picked up the broken fighter and brought him back before picking up Youji and then taking the pair of them to the kitchen. He started to patch Youji up first as he would be able to patch up Kio afterwards.
“It’s good that you feel no pain,” Kio said with a half-smile, wincing as he sat himself down. “Wish I could right now.”
“You don’t,” Natsuo said matter-of-factly and held up his arm. There was a long, deep gash in it that was leaking blood too fast to be good. “I can’t feel this, imagine if I died because I couldn’t see it either?” He looked away. “Youji, how is it?”
Youji smiled “Nearly done. It’ll be fine…but Ritsuka.”
All eyes turned to Soubi then and Kio frowned. “He took an overdose, we made him bring it back but it was already in his system. He was out of it Soubi, he only remembered you’d left him alone.”
Soubi had stilled in his ministrations of Youji’s hand when Kio had spoken and before the silence could stretch Youji hit him on the head. “It’s your fault!” and there were tears in his eyes. But Zero didn’t cry. “You hurt him! You made him take too many pills! Stupid Soubi!”
Natsuo didn’t say anything as Soubi tied off the bandage on Youji and started to clean his wounds. There was nothing to say. “He’s gonna be slaughtered,” Youji muttered as he swept over to Kio and started to help clean him up.
Soubi picked up a needle and thread and started to quickly sew Natsuo’s arm. “Where did they take him?” he asked, not looking up. He was well aware it was his fault. He was supposed to protect. That was the order. His absolute.
“Don’t know. Call him. I'm sure they will answer.”
“Soubi…” Kio started. He knew that look, had seen it before when the elder Aoyagi had told Soubi that something was his fault. “It wasn’t- there was nothing you could have done.”
“Quiet Kio,” Soubi muttered though there was bite to his tone. “He sent me to find information. I found some, but the cost was too high. I found Beatless, and the other Zero in a spell battle. I should have known something was wrong when they withdrew but I didn’t think.”
He looked up. “I’m going to find him.”
“We are coming too,” Youji said. “He tried to protect us, even wobbling around like that and…well he wasn’t supposed to move so if he’s in trouble he needs us.”
Soubi nodded once and flipped out his phone.
---
“Seimei?” his breathing was ragged, each movement no matter how slight wracked his body with pain. “Seimei why…”
“He isn’t here anymore Ritsuka. He had things to do.”
Ritsuka looked up at Nissei and frowned. He didn’t feel well, his head spinning and his side was throbbing where he was sure he had pulled the stitches but none of that mattered because his hands were tied to a pipe on the wall.
“Where are the others?” he asked then, forcing his eyes to focus on the room he was in. It was small and dark and didn’t seem to have any windows or features he would be able to use to determine where he was. But it was quiet. Too quiet to be in the middle of a town. The others weren’t there. “What did you do to them!?” he shouted and strained against the binding on his hands. His anger took over from the pain for a moment. “What-“
He stopped as Nissei struck his face. “Be quiet,” he hissed and looked around in what Ritsuka was sure would have been fear if he could think of anything that Nissei need be afraid of.
Ritsuka tasted blood. He had hardly noticed since he was so used to the taste now. He looked up and met Nissei’s dark eyes. “Soubi will come,” he said as the pain caught back up with him. “Soubi will..”
“We’re counting on it Ritsuka,” he said with a smile slowly spreading across his face. Ritsuka tried to fight it, to protest against hurting Soubi but he fell into darkness.
--
Kio watched the door of the apartment. Zero lay on the sofa, struggling to sit up but healing well. Soubi had just left them, after a huge argument that it would have been better to have all three of them go to find Beatless. He sighed.
“Do you think he can win?” he said and then turned when there was silence. Zero were looking at him with narrowed eyes. “What?” he breathed, shocked.
“Beatless are a hard pair to defeat. Lacis is the fighter, Dai the sacrifice. They have been paired since they were three or so.”
“Their fighting style is not good for Soubi. Especially without Ritsuka. They play with the very air you breathe Kio. They can get inside you without any trouble and rip you apart,” Natsuo finished as Youji took his hand. “But we have to believe it. Otherwise there is no hope for Ritsuka.”
--
“Soubi. Stop.”
The voice went through Soubi like lightning and his muscles locked. He wouldn’t have been able to move even if his life was about to end.
“Seimei,” he breathed, hardly letting the breath pass his lips.
There was a chuckle behind him, a light thing that never belonged to Seimei in the past. “I have Ritsuka now, he’s safe with me, more than with you Soubi. You failed to keep him safe.”
Soubi flinched as if stung, the words were like whips. Punishment was needed for his failure and he knew Seimei would give it. Pain erupted across his back and a hiss drew out of his lips even though he clamped it down almost as soon as it happened.
“He will be staying with me Soubi. Beatless will come to you with further instructions.”
Soubi was alone then, waiting to see if the order would be rescinded, if he would be able to move or not. Darkness came slowly and nothing happened, people had stopped to ask if he was alright but he had reassured them that he was merely waiting for someone. As darkness fell he fell to his knees, his hands digging into the ground. The decision was made. Soubi wasn’t forbidden from rescuing Ritsuka, Seimei had just said he was staying with them. He needed help if Seimei was involved, he couldn’t hurt Ritsuka again like before.
He pulled out his phone and dialled Zero.
