Hey there! This is a new chapter, the last one before we really get into the plot. I don't know what happened with me...Cause originally NEXT chapter was to be chapter One. From where these five chapters sprung to life I don't' know. I think that it had to do with exploring the characters before the angst maybe...But you'll get into the conflict soon enough.
This chapter deepens the nature of the relationship between the four... At the beginning it enters more into a Kurapica POV so we can get part of his story too. Then it focuses again on the boys and Killua's conflict.
Pd- Killua is quite into swearing when frightened, beware! :P
Chapter Five: x I know when you lie x
Fear.
That was the only word that could describe the shooting adrenaline tensing his limbs.
He was in front of a locked door, with the vague notion that someone on the other side was in danger.
He fruitlessly turned the knob.
He couldn't open it.
He saw his own hands struggling with the handle… And heard a scream from the other side of that MTF locked door. That voice was so familiar-
"Please! No…."
He turned the handle. But it would not turn. And the tug war inside continued...the screams were getting louder.
"No! NO!"
"I'll stop if you beg"
Killua stopped. That word chilled him to the bone and he knew its owner. But then the pleading continue…and that other voice was so familiar. It shouldn't be screaming...
"I-I beg you, please don't – no –noooo PLEASE"
He was now fighting desperately against the locked door, clawing hitting, OPEN FUCKING BITCH but it would not budge- his fists were punching the wooden boards but his struggle was drowned by the terrified voice.
"NO AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!"
BAM- he broke the door and rushed inside. A dark figure was lifting a boy against the wall. Lots of electric wires chained him.
Black bottomless empty eyes stared at him.
"Have you missed me, brother?"Cold venom as he laid a hand on the victim's neck. A piercing scream…
Only then did he realize:
Black, spiky hair.
Tanned skin.
Two honey eyes locked to him...Crying in terror.
As he'd never seen them before…
GON!
Killua woke up in the scream... he looked wildly at his side.
Gon was breathing evenly and smoothly.
Killua fell to his back and breathed.
GOD that had been scary…
That had been MTF scary…. Killua shut tight his eyes for some moments. And then he stared at the clock on the night table.
5 am.
Dude.
He tried to fall asleep. But after the ninth toss-and-turn he decided he just wasn't going to be able. He left the bed and stared around their room's familiar messiness: The old pizza cardboard, a sprawled domino game, T-shirts everywhere, Gon's fishing rod, Killua's yoyos, whale island postcards, a dozen of chocolate wrappers... and a miniature fake Star Wars sword. Yeah. And it glowed.
Killua flopped on the floor bored, taking the Star Wars sword on his hands. From his elbow to the tip of his middle finger, that's how long it measured.
You see, Gon's last birthday (almost a year ago) was an awkward experience for Kurapica and Leorio. The former gave him a green T-shirt, not bad. The latter gave him this…
miniature Star Wars sword.
Gon hadn't even known what Star Wars was. And so Killua bought the set of movies and a portable DVD for their travels.
He himself had easily come up with a present for him: a set of beautiful professional fishing baits. Till the present day Gon used them regularly- he thought quite proudly.
It was 5:15 am now.
And Killua could not sleep.
After some time alone in the dark he decided he would get out and explore on his own...
He left Gon a note and took the sword with him-It was their only flashlight. Even though he felt absolutely ridiculous carrying it. They had to get a professional hunter flashlight soon.
He knew himself well. Walking on his own with the cold breeze on his hair always helped him with strategic planning. He needed a solution.
Like now.
Only no answer would come...Not like thinking of grim thoughts was of his preference.
Besides nagging him was another much smaller issue. Yes, he disliked the idea of putting the issue into words.
But he'd known it for a long time actually. What, two months after he met him? How much he...cared for Gon.
Two years after and he knew it was better not to question it at all. He knew exactly what he felt, he'd known for a long time. And it did not distress him anymore; he just...lived happily by Gon's side, receiving the sunlight.
... Until recent events. That made him wonder how maybe Gon would be better off without him.
That possibility had always been this dark paranoia, the far unfulfilled fear. Now it was beginning to settle around him as a dreadful possibility. And yet it would tear him irreversibly just to try it. To leave him... ´
That's how he had stumbled with the cave some three hours later. Yeah, three hours. He had a lot to think...
He was lazily wondering a deserted island they'd explored before with Gon. Not much animal life to satisfy Netero's Mission, that's why they had finally moved on.
And now he was there. With too much on his mind. He felt he was going to drive himself insane...No, ok, concentrate in your surroundings:
Mmmm, Lots to be said on its topographic formations-lots of caves and peaks and risky cliffs. And empty. He knew he was very independent and a loner but hell he wouldn't be able to travel on his own and leave-
Focus.
All covered by moss and the roots of this giant slouched greenery that grew on the islands: Salty- water-trees that they hadn't seen before, not even on Whale Island.
It was beautiful.
And he felt empty...
He wanted to be around Gon. He'd been always there to snap him out when he was distraught. He felt lonely.
And he'd stumbled with the cave, and just entered feeling like a misguided ghost wandering.
And one hour later he realized it'd been a huge discovery.
It took him one full hour to reach the cave's pitch dark end and back, only accompanied by the glowing Star Wars sword. He'd done the trip just out of curiosity. And because his thought was becoming obsessive. Even though he examined the situation from all sides he could not find a solution.
Until he found something so extraordinary he was misplaced of all broodings. They were now equally replaced by wonder and awe and the tingling sensation on his stomach he had to share this with someone. By 10 am he was by Gon's side again, waiting expectant for him to wake up to show him his findings.
Killua brought Gon to the cave and this one in turn brought Kurapica who was followed by Leorio. The albino knew the guys would forget their plans about Pandora when they finally stared at...
This huuuuuge wall covered in ancient drawings he'd found inside! HUGE. Deep into the insides of the earth.
Killua was the head of the Indian line, the place snaking down; the roof getting lower…Kurapica carried the gas lamp.
Suddenly Killua turned left into a wider space with higher ceilings. And immediately turned to his friends, opening his arms
"Tadaaaaaaa! Here we are!" He waved at the stone walls. "Aint I the coolest hunter ever!" a triumphant expression. Gon, you just look! I can swell at every job I dooo-oooo!
His victory thoughts though were interrupted by Kurapica's voice.
"I recognize these" The blond was pale under the gas lamp. He had raised his hand to the drawings, his blue eyes wide. His fingers were tracing the patterns without touching them; as if afraid they would fade. He turned to his friends excited.
"A nomad tribe, friendly to the Kuruta made them. They probably lived once here."
Gon was gaping in amazement. The room was pitch dark but with the gas lamp they could see part of the actual grandiosity... The intricate drawings covered all the walls and ceilings.
"But isn't here, Caribbean islands, far from where you kind of lived?" Leorio asked.
"And you know where we lived because…?" the icy cold reply from the Kuruta left them in silence. Leorio mumbled
"No, I just assumed…" his stance now uncomfortable. He didn't actually know where the Kuruta lived, he just had a nudge it was some place like the highlands…
"Well, as I said, this was a nomad tribe." Kurapica continued as if nothing. "I remember they told us their main belief" He examined the paintings, his eyes now clouded with a long past memory. "You see, they strongly believed they were habitants of the world. Their nomadic life consisted on attempting to travel the entire earth, to try and see it all. Because of that, they would stay for two years in each place, and then move on."
Killua was now resting his back against the cold stones, staring at the high ceilings of patterns painted….
"That makes sense…" he said to himself without realizing he'd spoken out loud. As his friends stared at him he explained "well… it's quite clever, their endeavor." He paused. "You know, this human need, to see everything; yet a human span of life is by nature short…but… a culture is a different thing because it outlives and..."
Leorio and Gon had confused expressions under the light.
"Err... forget it" he had to analyze everything didn't he?
"You got exactly what they were thinking, and quite fast" Kurapica replied confidently to the boy. He then paused to elaborate.
"Have you ever wondered if you could try to read all the existing books in the world, or learn all its languages, or see all of the world's lakes and mountains...? Humans are naturally drawn to know it all. But we can't". Kurapica lifted a finger.
"However as Killua observed, a culture outlives the individual life of each member. It will ritually bid farewell to the elder while welcoming the new one to the traditions. And so the strive of this tribe is clever. By grasping the concept of culture they got closer to a solely human attempt of seeing all…That's what you were thinking no?"
Killua nodded. He'd thought just that, but his mind words didn't have the grandiosity of the Kurapica's speech. He politely sucked at expression.
Gon brightened "That's awesome! Then maybe this tribe one day will manage to visit the entire world…and truly posses the claim of being inhabitants of the world-and-and-and even though each person won't, as a culture they will actually see it all!"
His enthusiasm echoed through the many crevices and fissures of the rocks surface.
"…No... They won't"
There was a silence. And they'd all turned their heads to stare at the blond. Except for Killua. He remained slouched, nonchalantly staring in front. He had intuition for this kind of things.
Kurapica left the lamp on the floor.
"That tribe was also annihilated… Murdered."
A heavy silence fell on them.
Kurapica did not like tense atmosphere he himself had created and so he try to lighten it somehow... "Well… even cultures have a beginning and an ending".
It sounded better in his head…
And he couldn't help it. Kurapica caught himself brooding that oh so known thought...how an entire culture could finally end, when the life of the last one of them finally ceased. And with him all he'd known about them…what could be left…Their smiles and laughter and songs and stories, and history and existence.
Suddenly he felt his feet weigh a hundred tones, rooting him and tilting him forward. As if he carried something too heavy on his shoulders… He usually forbid those assaults of his mind.
Killua meanwhile slowly slouched down the wall.
Sometimes it happened that he felt slightly uncomfortable when they talked about murders, something so akin to his last job...Especially when he could guess what was going on the blonds' mind.
Some corner of his head still wondered to the day how Kurapica could be his friend, him being the ex-assassin he was. And he'd always thought it had nothing to do with him- he was not a good person; but that it had to do with Gon.
That was the reason they accepted him.
He did not demand more though.
Now why Gon had chosen him as a friend …that was beyond quantum physics.
Leorio couldn't help but notice how Kurapica suddenly looked so much more vulnerable... It was rare that he let himself be caught like this...And in those moments, he just didn't know how to react. Or reach him.
"It's quite a thing…" Gon had broken the silence waking all from their dark broodings.
They all stared at the black haired boy. Even the albino timidly lifted his head. Gon smiled and faced Killua
"Humans life span is by nature short no?" Gon used Killua's words as he raised the gas lamp to stare at the drawings "But then we stumble upon these and I think that it's quite a thing that humans, when they can't do it, not even for themselves...then they go ahead and create things that outlive them."
They boy's expression made everyone fall into a different kind of silence.
"Their story, it's all in here." Gon's open hand posed on the wall" it's left for others to piece out" His eyes glowed." And…and what's even more amazing... I believe this people painted these drawings in full knowledge that once they left, it wasn't meant to be stared at by them again"
The boy whispered, almost as if it was a secret. He inhaled in restrained eagerness "...We're so lucky..."
That's when Killua realized it. In those brown honey eyes was lit a fire that could achieve the biggest things: lead the mightiest revolution, and shove aside the highest mountain, unleash the greatest storm and lit an entire city in the dark... yet calm the saddest sea. Rest assured find Gin. It was an epic revelation and he desired to tell him so. Gon... was the real hunter...
… Who else to call to brighten the mood uh? Kurapica was smiling too. He put a hand on the spiky haired boy's shoulder and spoke.
"Gon, you're so right...The history of this tribe runs way long into the past. And we are witnesses.." The blond finally posed his hand on the stone and closed his eyes… he seemed to Nen trace the rocks, because then he whispered amazed
"They're 200 years old"
Wow…
"This is so cool" Gon whispered and all stared in amazement at the colorful drawings.
Being in the dark, in the mists of the crossroads of time…The four together.
It had been truly exciting.

When they returned to the ship for some biscuits and tea by sunset, the captain himself came to accompany them with a bottle of rum. He contributed to the adventure of the cave- he knew the legends involving all the chains of islands and this one as well.
He told about people who once inhabited the small island…
And how they'd been annihilated by the phantom brigade as well… 15 years earlier than Kurapica's own clan.
Though no one dared to comment this last fact to the captain. They all just stared in silence at the blond- who was at the moment apparently interested on his cup of rum-tea.
The captain rambled on how it was a shame to annihilate a clan that was more than 500 years old, and how they'd been finally caught in their nomad travelling very far from that island, and how many other tribes had suffered the same destiny, because there were people out there who thought murder was fun.
Killua had heard coolly all while sipping rum alone.
Kurapica had stayed quiet the entire time. He would only interrupt from time to time to ask politely for more stories.
That night though, after brushing his teeth and getting a shower, Leorio came into the room he shared with the Kuruta to find it empty. Leorio sighed. He knew the guy wouldn't let anybody near for the time being.
01:oo am
In the dark, under the blankets two boys commented about their day sleepily.
They talked about that miniature hourglass they'd found on the beach abandoned before they'd seen the cave. Another rarity added to Gon's treasures. The captain said it was older, much older than the existence of that tribe in that island. It probably had been washed away to the shores and came from a faraway land…
The Star Wars sword lamp was now being used to tent them in their bed, as they lied undercover. They sometimes fell asleep like that and woke up with a dead Star Wars battery.
But for now they chattered and dreamed- as kids must do- on remote countries they would visit...Just to find from where that hourglass came…
And they idly arrayed in between pillows the pictures they would send to Netero of their adventure...
They had to discuss some crucial issues
(NO GON were not sending him the one we're working as teddy bears! why? cause-cause it's embarrassing! No, he won't send us more money if we look pathetic; we have to look professional- that's why we shouldn't send him the one where we crashed that car that wasn't ours, or that one in juvy by accident... you think he'll laugh uh? What about fire us, have you ever thought of that one? That's what I thought. No, that one is embarrassing too! I won't send one with a baby in my arms- why? cause saving babies is embarrassing!)
Gon finally laid on his back, tossing the leather album out their tent, to lie on his back.
"We'll finish tomorrow :) "
"FINAALLY" Killua stretched and yawned
After some minutes of silence Gon's spoke
"Killua, you're still there?"
"Yes I am sir" the albino whispered back, staring at the blanket above. Now probably came one of his startling random night questions so Killua waited.
"Do you know what you expect from life?"
The question gave Killua and absolute depression. He usually tried to pass the day without thinking much of that...
Because of the silence, Gon reformulated
"Or…maybe not expect but... do you know what you want from life?"
He knew he wanted little. Just being with Gon.
"...no, I don't know..." he lied.
"Oh." Gon thought in silence. Killua waited, knowing Gon would finally explain what was concerning him.
"Killu, I think I do know what I want from life." He stared at their blanketed ceiling.
"You know how many people want money, lots of it…or… to be rich! To be famous! To have a career that will make them known or powerful…"
Gon was again doing that old habit game he had, of tracing unknown patterns in the air as he stared at the blankets over them and proceeded.
"Well, I think they need those things to be happy… But I found I don't want any of these. Weird uh? Is it too bad?"
The albino felt amused.
"No, quite not. Actually it's really cool. What do you want then?" there was a brief silence, where they could hear the sound of the sea…
"I can't deny I still do want to pursue my father"
"Of course"
"But…"
Gon gazed dreamily hearing the waves. Yeah… somewhere out there was his father but...
"But I think I'm already happy." He whispered enthusiastically " I think I'm already happy because I'm just happy doing anything along with you. I'm having fun! I don't need anything else it seems" he exclaimed. "No needs for a normal life, or money or a name or a career, as long as you accompany Me." he concluded happily with a wide smile "Thank you! :)"
Killua was startled. Stunned.
He had not been able to follow anything since the first statement. The sincerity of Gon words, his simplicity, his reasoning, his glowing expression as he lied on his back and struggled to take out his socks with his toes.
The albino was befuddled to his inner core.
"BA-KA! Don't say such things it's embarrassing!" abashed voice as he knocked Gon's head annoyed with strength. He even felt slight anger.
"But it's true! Ouch what did you do that for?" Gon punched him. (Yiaaaa!)
After light struggling, and tent attempt over (Faky star wars word sent flying somewhere) Killua flopped on his pillow to stare at the ceiling of their room.
There was a small window there that led to the skies above.
The albino exhaled and muttered.
"... It's cool though"
"You think so?" Gon stared at the starry night on that small patch of ceiling and smiled.
"Yeah. We have the same plan" Killua shrugged
Gon smiled happily, by his side with a "yei!"face.
"Gon, I think…." Killua had begun but interrupted himself to loudly yawn.
"(yaaaaaawn) well...you are the best friend I've only and ever had…" Killua closed his eyes smiling "aaaaand also the best person that I've known… I'm lucky to have met you. "He stated serious and then he stretched widely as he closed his eyes.
Gon was happily staring at the roof
"You know you are too, no? The best friend ever…" Gon said sleepily.
In the darkness Killua frowned… for him it sounded like a contradiction, as if he could be somewhat similar to the kindness Gon radiated. But he logically concluded that as Gon had never had before another friend before he probably didn't know it. He decided to let it go.
"Neh, you are Baka" he said eyes still closed, second guessing the pale boy.
Had it been the silence? Killua sighed and-
"Ouch!" Gon protested as an apparently sleeping boy had knocked him on the head.
"What was that for!" the spiky haired boy, quite vexed, faced Killua
"Nothing in particular" poker face
Gon tried to scowl but failed, chuckling against his will. He couldn't stay angry at the pale boy for more than a second.
"Sssshhhh you'll wake the neighbors!" Killua said half laughing himself…
Gon grinning closed his eyes.
Killua mirrored him… he felt so at peace.
Like he could finally, finally sleep…
But Gon sighed.
"Killu"
"Mm?"
The smaller one remained silent. And turned to face him
"You were lying."
Killua froze.
Again fully awake.
"Before... that bruise of your wrist, you didn't get it scuba diving, did you"
There was this long silence… cause... suddenly Killua's silver tongue lying skills had completely abandoned him. He was left unable to cover this small thing up.
And you know...it's a horrible feeling, that of when you're caught in a lie...there was a silence.
Gon looked at him. The turmoil on those violet eyes...
"It's ok. Really. I won't ask..." He assured his friend. "But... I just know when you lie he he" Gon tried to lighten that expression. He felt slightly guilty. A second ago his friend had seemed to be finally at ease. But he, hyper Gon had to go and stir things up because he just couldn't hold what he'd been keeping in his chest.
But suddenly Killua inhaled. He looked up, tilted grin.
"Thanks"
"Mm?"
"Not giving me away back then to those mother hens"
Killua couldn't add something more. Nor a lie nor the truth.
But Gon just nodded satisfied giggling at the adjective.
In his inner core the albino was thanking Gon so much for not asking. He suddenly felt a spout of admiration. Gon knew him even to the extent of knowing when not to ask, of knowing when Killua wasn't able to answer.
Gon closed his eyes "Well, that's what friends... (yawn) are (yawn) fooor"
He rested so near Killua, the albino could feel him breathing closely to his neck. He seemed at peace with the world.
He decided he'd left the debate on whether he deserved this or not for later. He decided to enjoy Gon's proximity. His warmth.
Slowly he allowed everything to fade to blackness...
But he couldn't... he dreaded tomorrow... He thought and thought and thought how he could have avoided all. What had he done wrong? How to escape the situation? The replay ran in front of his eyes.
How he hated Illumi.
There you go!
