“How could I have thought this air was so clean and fresh? Shinji asked himself. The air was flat, stale and now permeated with the odor of sweat. “Mostly her sweat,” he thought. “And sickness.”
And if fear has its own odor, then the air carried that as well.
No matter how hard they struggled to get each of the basic systems back online, others would then fail. Shinji had already made three trips onto the lunar surface searching for parts from the ruined base and doing maintenance on the pod. On Shinji’s fourth attempt, one of the repaired seals on his suit failed while the air lock was depressurizing. He was lucky, if he had been in full vacuum he might have lost his arm… or his life.
When the suit was repaired, Maya insisted that she be the one to make the next excursion. This led to a screaming fight between the two survivors. Maya insisted that she needed to examine the pod so as to be able to direct Shinji in the repair work. Shinji insisted that she was in no condition to try to wear the suit and operate on the uncertain lunar surface, especially with only one usable arm. She thought he was close to exhaustion and was probably wasting time because of his inexperience. There had been additional lunar quakes, milder than the first two scattering the lunar dust again and making visibility poor. The Earth, now in three quarter phase, could be seen, but the details were blurred.
They had good points about who should be next, but in truth both of them wanted to get out of the deteriorating stinking, moist atmosphere and away from each other, even just for a little while.
Normally sunrise on the moon was a sudden thing, there was no atmosphere to scatter the light and create a brightening dawn. But this sunrise was different. The lunar dust seemed to surround the pod like smoke rings of particles finer than talcum powder. They knew that as the dust settled the temperature would rise by hundreds of degrees. The sun, the heat and radiation would fry the suit. But the pod didn’t have enough power to run the cooling systems either – slow death or quick death.
Later, when Maya made her second excursion she found one of her group’s lunar rovers. It was at the bottom of a crevice that hadn’t existed before the quake. It must have been parked near the pod when the quake struck, though there was no sign of the NERV crew. The rear wheels were buried in rubble, but it otherwise looked intact. She could see a way down but didn’t dare try to reach it herself. She returned to the pod.
Shinji was on the cabin floor. He had placed a damp cloth over his face. His nose was still swollen from the earlier ordeal trying to save Maya from suffocating. She did not begrudge him the water he had used, but he had left the recycling/purification device unattended and it had stopped working. The air was warmer and more humid than before. She had spent 6 hours of her life… and his life, nursing the system back into operation. He let it die again from neglect. He knew what he was supposed to do, he just didn’t do it. “Stupid, stupid, careless boy,” she thought, “I don’t care if you kill yourself, but don’t take me with you.” She resisted the urge to scream at him, not that he seemed to care anymore.
Instead she told him about her find. He wanted to go to the rover immediately, not even thinking that the suit’s tanks needed to be fully recharged. He wanted to use the rover to find one of the fully functional survival stations. He would contact Earth and they’d send a rescue ship. “I could go home.” Then he corrected himself, “We could go home, I mean. The other station would have spare suits and I can bring one back to you.” He continued to talk about the rover. Maya pretended not to notice that he was really talking only about his own survival.
She argued, they needed the rover for other reasons…
Another aftershock struck. The module began to shift position, tilting as one of the supporting legs began to buckle…
There was only a limited number the Ayanami clones and no more could be produced.
Maya was not in on the secret of how the clones were actually created or the original source of the genetic material. In fact, she never questioned anything at all about the clones’ existence or purposes. She didn’t know that the death of Rei would activate another clone or the secret of Yui Ikari’s soul. Maya never even questioned why she didn’t question these things…
Although Ritsuko wasn’t the master of memory reprogramming and mind control that her mother was, she was none-the-less the only ‘living’ practitioner in the world. Reshaping Maya’s personality was Ritsuko’s second greatest achievement in CamKill manipulation. Still, it didn’t come close to Naoko’s work on the Katsuragi expedition…
Fortunately, only two clones had been needed so far to give form to the soul of Yui Ikari but with the return of the angels there was no way to know how many more might be needed. And other clones had been used then destroyed in experiments over the last few years including the preliminary work on the dummy plug system.
It had taken over a dozen failed clones to produce the first successful dummy plug test system. There was no reason to believe that these numbers might improve when the second system was built. The dummy plug was a biomechanical system which mimicked a pilot’s consciousness and soul, tricking an EVA into activation. The clone or at least parts of it served as the “bio” in biomechanical. Rei Ayanami spent long hours in Terminal Dogma having her engrams copied and downloaded into her ‘clone sisters’. Some of the clones, for still unknown reasons, destroyed themselves during this process. One had bitten her tongue off and bled to death. Another clone was restrained after being caught trying to bite through her own wrist. Eventually she found a way to stop her own heart. Mindless clones with downloaded Ayanami memories should not have been able to have the will, the intelligence or the volition to perform acts of such complexity.
The process of converting a clone to a biomechanical component had also been too traumatic for some of the experimental subjects. The dummy system could not house an intact clone body. The clone was surgically altered until the brain, spinal column and nerve branches were all that remained before being housed in a mechanical matrix.
SEELE requisitioned several clones for their own, unknown purposes.
A substitute for the clones was necessary.
One of the struts that had anchored the pod to the surface had broken away during the latest quake or aftershock. Another strut on that side had weakened and crumbled. If it gave way, the pod would rip free of the remaining supports and shred the bottom of the hull.
They finally found another use for that damn horse head statue. Shinji had dumped it outside the airlock on his first trip outside the pod. It took up too much room and although it allowed Shinji to snap Maya’s dislocated shoulder back into the socket, it reminded him too much of the damage he’d inflicted on her. With some carefully applied cables and difficult maneuvering Shinji managed to wedge the sculpted stone under the remaining strut to prevent any additional slippage. The pod was now tilted by about 10 degrees, but should remain intact… for the present time.
When he returned to the pod, Maya was asleep. The injector she used to give herself another dose of pain killers lay near her good arm. Shinji stared at her for a long time before picking up the injector. He then gave her another shot, then another.
When the ‘experimental test subjects’ as Ritsuko (and now Maya) referred to Asuka & Shinji, had mated in a supersaturated LCL solution it had produced ten zygotes with human and non-human characteristics.
Two weeks had passed since the test subjects had mindlessly mated. Asuka had been scheduled for an entry plug test without the other pilots “Obviously Ritsuko recognizes my natural inborn superiority as a pilot and needs to recalibrate the equipment” she told a skeptical Shinji. Misato rolled her eyes, “Then why is Shinji scheduled for the test day after tomorrow, hmm?” Asuka harrumphed and tried to come up with an answer. Shinji beat her to it. “Oh, I’m sure that Ritsuko wanted Asuka to go first to establish the maximum plug depth before testing me.” Asuka chimed in, “Of course that’s why! And I’m glad that you accept that, baka Shinji.” Misato smiled, knowing that the explanation made no sense. As if reading her mind, Asuka harrumphed again and flounced out of the dining room.
The Yui Ikari/Ayanami clone line was sterile. The Ayanami’s produced eggs and experienced menses on a regular lunar cycle, but the eggs contained almost no genetic material. However, Ritsuko had discovered that when pilots conceived in an LCL environment, the resulting zygotes bonded to and thrived in the clones’ sterile eggs.
The implantation of the genetic material could not be done artificially, just as the in vitro fertilization didn’t produce the desired results. Another method had to be found.
Maya had won the argument… at least for now. A sullen Shinji had been able to string a cable from the rover’s batteries and solar panels back to the pod. Some of the pod’s original solar panels were found undamaged and also hooked into the system. A data cable from the rover’s onboard computer and relay systems gave them a limited view of the space above the crevice. The rover’s radio had also gone dead but Maya had some hope of using the computer and antenna to rig up something that could send a signal.
Without telling Maya, Shinji had dug most of the rubble out from the rear wheels. Although the rover could not climb back up to the pod, he felt sure he could drive it and eventually come out near one of the other survival stations. Of course he would need to disconnect the generator and panels from the pod… and remove the pod’s spare air tanks to hook up to the rover. Once lunar night came again… Maya could probably survive… He was sure she could live long enough for him to return. It would be better if she slept most of that time, she’d use up less air. Fortunately he had already found additional supplies from the base including pain killers and sedatives.
It was getting very hot. Shinji gave up on additional work on the rover. The settling dust was no longer blocking the sun. “Maya is useless, she won’t listen to reason” he said to himself. “It’s up to me to rescue us.”
Shinji looked up at the Earth. Geography was never his best subject. Maps were confusing, they all tried to show the original and current coastlines. The continents had changed drastically after second impact flooded then drained the Atlantic basin. Since the Earth’s axis also shifted, there were periodic changes as well. “I think that’s Western Europe… funny… What’s different?” Shinji hurried back to the pod as the lunar surface temperature continued to rise. “What was different?”
Shinji’s unconscious mind solved the problem though he wasn’t yet consciously aware of it. There were no city lights on the night side of the Earth. There were no lights at all.
The truth was, Asuka felt strange. Her periods had always been unpleasant, but at least they occurred on a regular schedule. Lately though, her system was seriously out of balance, she felt bloated and there was a deep body ache in her pelvis. She didn’t complain though, at least not about that. She didn’t want anyone at NERV, Dr. Akagi especially, think that she might be having health issues. Gynecological problems might cause her to be grounded.
The discomfort and worry led her to be even more abusive to Shinji than ever. He seemed to have an unlimited ability to soak up mistreatment and misery. His acceptance made her angrier and guiltier at the same time.
“Someday that all that buried rage is going to come out.”
The two survivors of the moon expedition sat morosely in N-LAB3, ECOS1 watching the image of the Earth on the small screen relayed from the rover (which in NERV speak was called NERV Advanced Transportation Hauler ANd Scope or NATHANS, possibly referring to the prophet ‘Nathan’).
The lights were out all over the world. There appeared to be storm clouds covering Japan and much of the Korean peninsula. The clouds had an ugly reddish tint, as if thousands of red klieg lights were scanning the clouds. Maya realized “Those aren’t clouds, that’s smoke.” Japan was burning.
“Third impact” Shinji said with finality.
“Maybe…” Maya responded. There isn’t anywhere near the damage done to the Earth that the second impact caused.
“No damage, just no people left alive.” Shinji almost sneered.
“We don’t know, Shinji. The rover’s camera isn’t anywhere powerful enough to show us surface conditions. The crevice the rover is in blocks part of our view of the Earth, also.”
“And Japan?”
Maya sighed. “Whatever it was that caused those quakes here on the moon has to be related to what happened on Earth. I don’t believe it could have been coincidental. It may also explain why the radios all failed at the same time.”
The procedure used on Asuka was much quicker this time. Again, Naoko Akagi’s CamKill Enzyme Suppression technique was applied to prevent moment-to-moment memories from forming. Again, Asuka was saturated with LCL. And again she was strapped to the same table that she and Shinji had used for their mindless mating, though this time she was anchored more firmly and stirrups used. Special anesthetics were applied and the ten fertilized eggs were removed.
Maya asked, “Will she notice any difference? This is the largest gestation and harvesting of eggs we’ve done so far and suddenly removing so many at once is bound to leave physical effects.”
“No, in fact she’ll feel a little better within a day or so. Her own gynecologist is actually one of us and if Asuka complains he’ll reassure it that it is all due to stress. In fact, since last year while she was in Germany, NERV doctors have been artificially extending and terminating her ovulation cycles. She no longer knows what her normal cycle should be so she is unlikely to ask questions now.”
Before Maya could voice any objections Ritsuko continued, “Once we have a sufficient supply of acceptable Ikari/Langley zygotes, we’ll let her cycles harmonize naturally.” Then, “Assuming this batch meets our needs, we will only need them to produce another forty or so.”
Although the statement chilled Maya, she did not question or criticize the inhumanity of using an unwitting Asuka to breed fifty abominations.
The last part of the procedure was cosmetic in nature. A thin, smooth, delicate, and nearly translucent membrane was invisibly grafted by her labia minora. “See,” said Ritsuko, “We even restored her virginity!
Shinji was scheduled for one more excursion to make a final check of the exterior of the pod. Although the dust had given them a temporary reprieve from the heat and radiation, lunar night was still almost two weeks away. It needed to be a quick inspection.
Something went wrong with the air lock. Instead of a gradual decompression preventing loss of atmosphere, the hatch to surface opened prematurely and vented the lock’s air into vacuum. Shinji lost his footing and was nearly sucked out, almost repeating the disaster at the base. Shinji began yelling at Maya, blaming her for carelessness. Even after he remembered that the suit radio was dead, he continued yelling… and still continued when he realized that she wouldn’t hear him now that the airlock was in vacuum.
“He’s fouled up the safety mechanism,” Maya thought. “Careless, stupid!”
“You screwed up the air exchange system,” he yelled, though he knew she couldn’t hear him. “Damned drugs made you stupid.”
“Are we ready for the implantation of the zygotes tomorrow?” asked Ritsuko.
Maya responded, “Shinji will report to you at 0630 hours and should be fully immersed in LCL by 0715. The LCL drugs including CamKill Enzymes should render him effectively insensate by 0900. We can begin the penile implantation any time after that, it should take approximately two hours and before breeding can commence.
“Have you selected the clones that will be used for breeding?”
“Yes sempai, clones 18, 25 and 28 are currently undergoing memory transfer under terminal dogma.”
“Very good, Maya. Make a note to remind me to call Misato and tell her that Shinji will be spending the night in HQ and he should finish up the tests the following day.”
“Yes sempai, I don’t understand why a second day will be needed for breeding purposes.”
“We’ve never used this penile implantation system on a living test subject before. I suspect that even under CamKill memory suppression, he’ll need 24 hours to recover.”
“Yes ma’am.”
Ritsuko shook her head. “Poor boy, he’s had mindless sex with the fiery redhead virgin of his dreams and doesn’t know it. He’s about to have a four way with identical triplet virgins and won’t remember that either. That’s probably a world’s record, especially since he’ll still believe that he is a virgin also.” Then, more seriously, Ritsuko continued, “The real blessing is that he won’t ever know what we are about to do to him surgically… the world’s first reverse in vitro implantation into a male.”
“And his father, I mean the commander didn’t object to the procedure?”
“As long as it doesn’t affect his ability to pilot the EVA, the commander has given us a green light.”
Maya had been exercising her arm regularly for several days. She had regained a limited amount of mobility, she could raise and lower the arm past waist level and could grip with that hand, but then couldn’t relax the grip. The hand would remain frozen until she used her other hand to open the gripping fingers. There was also a lot of pain, constant pain which only varied in intensity. The discoloration was fading, but her skin color was grey, the flesh was slack on that side of her body.
Shinji’s inspection of the hull lasted only 20 minutes. There were no obvious leaks, the connections to the power supply and tanks appeared to be holding up, though they were obviously makeshift. He mostly stayed out of the sunlight in the shadow of the pod, so there was no way he could check on the rover, but so far the connection was holding, the batteries were recharging and there was sufficient power to melt the ice in the storage tanks. He rapped on the hull three times to indicate that he was coming back in.
The pod had originally been part of a shuttle. The diagnostic controls for the airlock had to be moved when the pod was refitted for surface activity. Maya needed to wedge herself into a small uneven space to work the controls. Even in the reduced lunar gravity, operating the controls stressed her damaged shoulder and arm. Before starting the maintenance cycle, she injected herself with a half dose of pain killers, enough to take the edge off the pain, but not enough to disorient her.
When running diagnostics, the airlock and decompression system automatically goes into manual control. The safety protocols blocks commands to open the hatch when there is a vacuum or low pressure condition in the lock. However, this could be overridden from inside the lock.
Maya heard Shinji rap on the hull two times. Good, that would give her more time to complete her investigation. She suspected that the problem was mechanical rather than software, especially given the age of the equipment and shaking the pod had experienced. Still, she couldn’t yet rule software out. The system could run on manual for the moment.
Maya was impatient, she wanted to get back to remote operation of the rovers systems. She believed that eventually she would be able to set up send a microwave transmission burst to Euro-NERV or the UN.
She heard the inner lock open, then close. He was supposed to wait outside, two knocks, right? “What? Shin…”
There was an explosion, the sound of metal crashing and then the lights flickered and went out.
Shinji’s gauntleted hand grabbed her by the ankle. She heard his voice, muffled by the space suit helmet, “What did you do? WHAT DID YOU DO?!?” He yanked her out of the alcove and in the reduced gravity she sailed across the cabin striking her head and wounded shoulder against the cabin wall. She slowly crumpled to the floor.
