A/N: I don't know why but I had SOOO much fun writing this chapter, I can finally get moving some, and I am trying to go for a more realistic story even IF my pacing is still off. I hope anyone who reads enjoys the story as much as I enjoyed writing it!

Ch. 5

The nurse gave me a small smile. I perked up hoping will all my might everything was ok. She smiled at my change of mood as I wiped away my tears waiting for her to speak.

“Your pokemon will be just fine. No lasting damage. Give her a couple of days an she is going to be as good as new. However the reason I want to talk in private is this,” she sighed frowning now. “I looked up your record. Your a champion level trainer. How could you be so reckless. If you ahd gotten her hear even 10 minutes later she would have been done for. What were you thinking?” Her gaze was rather accusatory. I know she gave many people lectures about this, weedle sometimes popped up on route 29.

“To be honest I just forgot I haven’t been on the road in ages. You have my word it won't happen again, mam” blushed a little having kicked myself for the same thing over the past hour. I just sighed as I looked her in eye. “so may I see Riza now?” I swallowed worried I would have to wait. Thankfully she nodded.

“Absolutely! In fact she seems restless. I believe she wants you around.” The nurse smiled giving a small giggle, probably at the massive grin I was supporting. With that she led the way over to riza's room. It was a little small with an equally small bed. I assumed it was for rodent sized patients. Laying on a a pillow was Rizania, her midsection wrapped in a bandage. When we come in she looks up, just before giving me that toothy grin she gave me when we first met.

I rush over to her wanting to hug her so bad, but afraid of hurting her. “Riza... I am so so sorry, this is all my fault if I had planned correctly none of this would have ha-” she interrupted me with a small yip. She stood up slowly sitting back on her rear as she beckoned me forward with a small tiny hand I knelt down by the bed making us I level. My head at the railing. She motioned for me to come even closer. Finally my face was very close to hers an she opened her arms and hugged my face tight I closed my eyes wanting to break into tears.. but one thing stopped me. A tiny little sound.

“I-i-is ike” it was so soft I wouldn't have heard it if she wasn’t right next to my face. I slowly pulled away wide eyed. The nurse had already left. I was alone with Rizania. I blinked unsure what just happened, seeing my confusion Riza smiled. She had grown a little since I Got the tiny fire mouse. She was about the size of my head now. She opened her mouth not making sound her tongue seeming to move around...

“I-It,” her tongue fumbled around it seemed as I couldn't help but stare in shock. “It's..O-o-o-K” I felt a tear streaming down my face. SO that’s why she stayed so silent! She didn't want to speak in her native way. She was listening to me and watching my tongue through her squinted eyes. Finally I wrapped her in my arms as gently as I could holding her close.

“Thank You riza. Thank you so much.” A pokemon who chose to try talking was a huge sign of loyalty. As I mentioned before pokemon were sentient beings, however they chose to let us use them. It wasn’t until recently I noticed How truly amazing they were. The fact Rizania, a young pokemon, chose to take such an effort just to talk like me, meant she really cared for me. It showed commitment an determination. To think she had already gotten that after 2 tries. “your amazing riza, simply amazing” She cuddled close to me as I let her down. Suddenly we both slumped. The whole day was an ordeal, and the fatigue suddenly made itself felt. I sat in a chair near Riza. I am not sure which one of us passed out first.

Riza Got out late the next day after we had eaten lunch, we didn't say much but I got her saying my name an some basic sentences. She was a far cry from talking but she seemed to pick it up quite quickly. SO after eating the nurse came in with a pleasant smile.

“Well Your looking wonderful Riza, I am pleased to say you seem to be perfectly healed. It was rather astounding how quickly you healed actually.” She smiled at me too. Riza seemed proud but stayed silent. We decided for her safety to try to limit talking to when we were alone. Riza just gave that toothy grin of hers. After taking off the bandages she stretched herself out letting out a cute little squeak before her flames burst out exuding a good amount of heat. While she paced to get her legs going I filled out the paperwork The nurse had given me. Standard deal for overnight hospitalization.

“Looks like your cleared to go mr. Ardor” I nodded thanking her for all her help as I offered my shoulder for Riza with her quickly climbing up giving a smile as she settled on it. We left quietly as I had to cover my eyes to the sun having been inside for a day an a half. With a grin we headed to the mart again. I had to pick up some antidotes as well as somethings that I had a very special plan for.

“Alright are you ready for attempt two Riza? I can understand if you don't, We can turn bac-” she clamped a tiny hand on my lip the fur soft on my lips as I looked at her shaking her head.

“I want do this Matt” She had a very soft voice very weak an a little forced but I knew that would change as her body, at the peak of her chance to grow would adapt to almost anything that she an I worked hard on. This was the bets opportunity to get her body to allow for human speech, as well to really get her fire attacks up.

I nodded as we took our steps again. This time a little more cautious, we planned to avoid weedles until she got her ember up to spec. There wasn’t much to train on today, a pidgey here an there but with agility Riza could show off she was able to dodge an knock out quite a few of the tiny birds. SO at about the half way point we stepped into the tree line and set up camp. I got a special charcoal out of my pack after setting up the tent. After getting the fire going we relaxed, me taking out a bowl for Riza filling it with a special food mix. After she ate I smiled grabbing some tongs finding a small burning coal.

“Ok Riza now, It's time we worked on your smoke screen your body can handle fire but IT can't push it out without a catalyst to get the fire burning the liquid in your system that's stored for it. SO I got us some everburn coals. They burn for days an are very small so you can eat them. It will be really warm at first I think but it won't hurt ok?” She nodded opening her mouth as I gently placed it on her small tongue “now before you swallow you will feel like coughing don't. Thats the smoke trying to get out, just wallow it down and it will naturally start coming out of the flame jets on your back.” I bring up my bandana putting on some goggles as well. “OK now swallow Riz”

She gulped it down holding her small snout with her tiny hands as her eyes became pinched together. Suddenly her body seemed to swell just a little bit. I waited worried IF she wants able to do it it wouldn't hurt but it would be very uncomfortable until the coal burned out in about 6 days. Thankfully Smoke started coming out of her back as she let go of her snout looking over her shoulder as the black smoke seemed to just barely leak out rapidly becoming a jet of it soon Even my bandana coudln't completely keep it out of my mouth as I coughed a little bit.

“Ok rizania open your mouth” I coughed again “An take in a deep break of air. It will stop the smoke.” I hear a small sound and soon the smoke became clear. I laughed happily. “Alright GREAT JOB Riz!” she squeaked smiling as she looked at me running up to me jumping into my arms. She was bigger than yesterday already. Almost above my ankle when she was on all fours now when she sat up on her hind legs she was up to mid shin.

“I DID! I DID!!” she jumped about in my arms. I laughed at the innocence of the comment. It was absolutely adorable. I nodded looking down at her. She was warmer than usual knowing I was feeling her body slowly get used to more heat. Nodding I got her attention by squeezing her a little.

“Good you can do that whenever you what, just rememeber where the smoke was coming form in your body and hold her breath for as logn as you need, at first you will have to hold still probably but you got it out really fast I think you will get the hang of moving an using the move. When your ready to stop takign that deep breath. Now, never forget that warmth when you can use ember an evolve you'll never need another everburn again. Your body will start producing its own fire internally and even make a better flame which will later become the equivalent of a flamethrower.” She listened raptly probably once again also watching my mouth form the words.

Over the next hour we practiced the smokescreen as well as getting her ready for producing ember. “You need to get rid of any smoke in your body by thrusting it out as hard as you can out your back until your flames start up again the moment they do is when you have the spark to set of your internal liquid. The goal right now is to shoot that liquid as far as you can. Let it come to your tongue an use the air you have in your third lung as the way to shoot it out ok?”

tonight we couldn’t get it out further than 3 feet but it was a massive improvement for such a young pokemon. We smiled yawning at the same time climbing into the tent It wasn't moment letter after laying back in the blanket that Riza was asleep I scratched her head softly before passing out myself. I didn't dream thankfully.

The next morning we got everything packed up as we got ready to head out. We had to work on the smokescreen in battle hopefully without problem. We got our wish not longer than half an hour later an 3 pidgey surrounded us obviously hoping to make my little fire mouse a meal. I smiled at riz and nodded I put up my bandana an put on my goggles as she jumped into the grass to conceal herself at first. Within seconds she had the smoke going hiding her completely one pidgey made the mistake of diving after Riza.

“Riza tackle it its coming down at you right now. I saw a brief flare of fire as a small screech was caught off from inside the smoke. Smiled, one down. To my dismay however the 2 remaining stayed up in the air out of reach of Riza. We would have to wait for the smoke to clear. These were a little less impatient it seemed. Soon Riza was able to start being seen standing on her hind legs, a sign she wasn't all that far from becoming quilava who often stood on hind legs an moved as well. She let went back down on all fours poised an ready, one pidgey went after her the smaller of the two. Moving out fo the way at the last moment riza grabbed one of its wings almost lifted off the ground as he tugged back words tossing the small bird head first into the ground using all the speed it flew at Riza with.

The last one seemed to hesitate before running off as I smiled kneeling down offering my shoulder to riza. I noticed a small cut on her side which I used a potion to heal up before we moved on. She really was getting bigger rather quickly. The day was pretty subdued as I kept having Riza smokescreen into battle first. For now it was her best defense until she grew larger an battle quicker foes. She was too small to always hodl her own right now and it was her weakest time even if she was growing the faster she ever would. We also worked on her speech some, teaching like I had my baby cousin at times when I babysat. I had a feeling when she evolved I would get to hear her voice a lot easier an her throat would have evolved into something capable of easy speech. The muscles she was using were showing the signs of adapting an evolution tended to enhance all the muscles that were worked the most. I believe the term for those muscles were Ev trained muscles.

We worked closer an closer to where the map indicated Mr. pokemon's house. “Nearly there Riza. Shouldn't be any problems now”

“M-Matt!” she pointed at the ground in front of us. Standing between us and the road were a small group of large weedles, looking ready to evolve like the one who gave Me that big scare. It didn't look like we could move around them.

“Damnit to hell. Riza, I think we may have to try your ember attack a bit early.” her range wasn't great but it was better by far. It could shoot out about 5 yards now. Btu she still hadn't figured out the spark sequence yet. “Alright girl smoke things up” I got ready for the smoke like always as I watched her dive into the grass her flames vanishing as she covered the whole half of the field in black smoke. Was actually rather impressive, I couldn’t quite see her so neither could the weedle, but she could see fine in there I knew. I saw her flame for a mere moment before hearing a definitive splat, one down, five to go. I heard a rasping noise like sanding paper, realizing what had happened “RIZA careful of the string, too much an you won't be able to dodge their stings.” the smoke was starting to clear she couldn't move an hold her breath for that long quite yet. I heard her growling as the smoke finally cleared, there were three more weedle around her as I ground my teeth. She was stuck to the ground the string shot completely covering her as they edged closer an closer. “Riza cover yourself in the liquid it as best you can”

I saw her nod which meant she could move her head fine as she shot the clear fluid on her back and the string. “Now start your flames up girl spark form the outside!” she didn't waste a moment as he body was suddenly covered in flames. Knowing she could take it her body was resistant to fire the strings burned away. The weedle stopped moving retreating a little form the heat as Riza jumped opening one down letting liquid drip from her mouth as suddenly she shot a little jet of flame from it burning the bug to a crisp.

I grinned. She had figured it out. Now we didn't have a thing to worry about. “Burn them to hell girl!” She grinned that grin of hers a sort of wickedness to it as a thin but long jet of flame shot out catching another one burning it to death in seconds. The last one was easily caught by her third flame. No chance. Rizania looked at me happily. I ran to her picking her up hugging her close her back flame curling around my arm almost like tentacle. I held her small form to my face as I praised her over an over. Finally we stopped celebrating as we quickly got back on the road, seeing the large house in the distance. We finally reach it just as the sun was setting, before firmly knocking on the door.
