Part 4:
Our Souls Ignite…
—————
“…When all seems lost in the War of Light, look to the stars, for Hope burns bright.”
After finishing his mantra, Tristan Blake pulled his ring from the face of the power battery. A sense of calm washed over him as he continued to fly over the sea. He took a deep breath and opened his eyes, his attention lingering on the blue ring on his right hand. As he became lost in its soft azure glow, everything made sense. The ring pulsed on his finger, a reassuring presence that sent an unmistakable message to its bearer. All will be well.
“Is that really necessary?”
The annoyed voice came from above him; a fact that would normally be impossible if one ignored the fact that Tristan himself was flying at incredible speeds.
“Ring, tell me,” Draya said, talking into her own power ring. “What exactly was his ring’s power level before Tristan recharged?” The Zoroark’s ring was one of a bright yellow. The uniform that clung to her body matched the hue, steep yellow V’s pointing down and around her neck across an inky black. Her eyes borrowed the shade as well, almost glowing themselves.
[Cursory scans reveal the Blue Lantern’s ring was at 95.046% power before being charged,] the yellow ring sounded off.
“You see?” Draya said, twirling in the air to come face to face with Tristan. She flew upside down and backwards, inches from his face. She held her long mane in place with her yellow aura, rather than let at the mercy of the high winds. “You were fine. What’s with the constant recharging? You’re not afraid of falling into the ocean, are you love?”
“Saying the oath calms me down,” Tristan explained, letting the power battery slip back into its pocket dimension. “It reminds me to think with a level head, to put stress behind me and move forward with positive action.”
“Aww, not even a little nervousness?” Draya pouted, spinning right-side-up. “Not even about what might be below us right now?!”
A giant, yellow Sharpedo erupted from the sea below them, snapping its jaws around the blue lantern before he had a chance to react. Draya held the construct in place with little effort. Though it was in danger of failing if she could not compose herself soon.
“Oh my— Hahaha!” she laughed, circling her caught prey. “Your face!”
When the Yellow Lantern wasn’t met with panic or pleas for freedom, she reluctantly let her conjuration fall into nothing. She scowled, floating over to her human lover and caressed his face with her glowing claws.
“Nothing? Not even a jump scare?” she asked, disappointed.
“Sorry, Draya.” Tristan said, placing his hand on hers. “I’m not afraid of you,” he kissed her, holding the contact as long as he dared. “What I am afraid of is what Ghetsis might do if we waste any more time. Let’s go.”
—————
Earlier…
“What do you mean, ‘he escaped’?” Tristan asked.
Cheren and Alder both seemed at a loss for words. Tristan had just come down from the throne room in Team Plasma’s castle after a heartfelt farewell. Ghetsis Harmonia had finally been apprehended and taken away just minutes before.
“Way to drop the ball, glasses,” Draya chimed in.
“It isn’t his fault,” Alder said. His and Cheren’s clothes were covered in strange burns; a symbol neither Tristan nor Draya recognized. “Believe me, this is about as ‘out there’ as it gets, but he flew away.”
“A glowing orange ring broke through the ceiling and flew onto his hand,” Cheren said, nothing but seriousness in his face. “He then shot into the air, yelling about something that was his.”
Tristan and Draya looked from each other back to Cheren and Alder.
“So, he’s gone?” Tristan asked, sitting on the cold hard floor. “All that work? Everything we went through? It all just— literally flew out the window?”
“I said the ceiling,” Cheren added.
“Not the time, you know?” Draya glared at him. She knelt down next to Tristan and pulled him into her arms. She was vaguely aware that two humans now watching her in her true form for the first time, but she tried to push out of her mind.
“Don’t worry, Tristan,” she whispered into his ear. “We’ll get him. And we’ll make him pay for all he’s done.”
“I know we will,” said Tristan, returning the comfort.
“Look out!” Alder yelled, pointing above the group. A block of rubble came falling from the crumbling ceiling, but something out-sped the heavy stones. Two small objects zipped downward, crashing and flashing into the dark and quiet room. By the time the debris crashed onto the floor, two new Lanterns stood, staring incredulously at one another. The two rings announced their new inductees to their ranks.
[Tristan Blake of Earth. You have the ability to instill great Hope. Welcome to the Blue Lantern Corps.]
[Draya of Earth. You have the ability to instill great Fear. Welcome to the Sinestro Corps.]
“Wait, why did I not get a color? Who the hell is Sinestro?” Draya asked the ring now on one of her left claws. “Did someone seriously think they could rename a color after themselves?”
“Focus on what’s important, please,” Tristan said, putting a hand on his mate. His touch had a soothing effect on her, loosening any agitation she previously felt.
“Cheren,” Tristan said, holding up his ring-hand. “Are these rings like the one Ghetsis escaped with?”
“Yes, but like I said, his was orange.”
“Then these should be able to catch him!” Draya exclaimed, jumping higher than she ever could before. Her ring let her fly effortlessly. “Come on, Cobalt Blue, let’s go catch us a maniac! Let’s see if I can make him scream!”
Draya zoomed off into the sky through the hole the rings made, laughing as she did.
“That yellow ring…” Tristan muttered as he took to the air, “I don’t like it.”
“Tristan! Wait! What is going on?” Cheren yelled.
“I’m sorry, but I think I’m needed elsewhere,” he said. Tristan clenched his fist, letting the ring guide him. “Don’t worry. Everything will be okay!”
—————
Now…
“You know…” Draya said as she flew backwards on her back. Her eyes shined as she glanced at Tristan, who wore a solemn expression. “There’s something else that’s bothering you. I can tell.”
“I already told you I’m not comfortable with you having that ring,” Tristan said.
“Babe, listen. You’re trying to bullshit a professional liar who now has in her possession a ring that lets me see into your innermost insecurities and fears. A liar, I might add—and will, because I love it—that has been emotionally and physically intimate with you. I know you too well,” she flew closer to him. “What’s wrong?”
Tristan saw genuine concern in her face, something he secretly worried might’ve been lost with the arrival of their rings. He smiled, holding out his left hand and showed her something that he had kept hidden from her. A second blue ring floated in an orb of blue energy.
“Another ring? Why’d you get two?” she asked.
“I didn’t. Watch,” Tristan let the shield of energy disappear around the ring.
[Scan initiated… Scanning for Hope]
[Target sentient located.]
[Error!]
[Emotional interference detected.]
[Failed to lock onto target sentient.]
[Relocating to nearest Blue Lantern for safe keeping.]
[Scan initiated… Scanning for Hope.]
A blue bubble of energy silenced the ring.
“It’s been stuck on a loop like that ever since it showed up,” Tristan said. “Somewhere out there, someone is supposed to get this ring. Something is stopping it. I can’t shake the feeling that it’s something bad.”
“You don’t think it’s Ghetsis, do you?” Draya asked. “He sure had some high hopes about his future. Now they’re all gone.”
“I sincerely hope not,” said Tristan. He pulled his power battery back from its inter-dimensional hiding place and placed his right hand to its face.
“In fearful day, in raging night…”
