As I work my way to my feet from where I was hiding in the vegetation I casually snap a picture in the direction of Ainz and Albedo, not worrying about the quality of the photo, just securing any image of them for the target tracker to keep an eye on them later. Slipping it back away into my pocket space, brushing the dirt off and straightening myself the best possible, I start to casually close the distance to the gathered villagers and their esteemed visitors. Surely Albedo tracks my approach at the very least, but she doesn't visibly react to me, likely her disdain for one more insect no more threatening then the last. As I grow nearer some of the villagers recognized me from the battle and call out their thanks.
A rough outline of how this conversation was to go had been playing through my head for awhile now, but as I grew closer it became harder and harder to concentrate on anything except for the magical aura that rolled off them both in waves. They were very distinct in their own ways. Ainz's was more overwhelming, the flavor far stronger and unsurprisingly reeking of death. The cloud of his mana was thick, charged with a raw feeling of wrongness that seemed to conflict with the essence, yet it felt tightly controlled. He had raw power but that was certainly not all. The items he was wearing were impressive in their own right, the flavor of them was more neutral, but they seethed with power. Every piece of jewelry, his clothing, it all radiated with might. His mask was the only piece I could detect that wasn't practically screaming out its greatness, it was little more then a trinket, whose only purpose was to conceal the skeletal face beneath.
Albedo's aura was overwhelming in its own very different way. The sense of power was still intense, but rather then feeling a hostile presence it was an enticing sensation, welcoming almost, inviting you in. Her scent was alluring, I could see why it was one of the first things Ainz had noticed about her, even if I couldn't quite put my finger on what it reminded me of. Pleasant, unique, and somehow mingled with her magic as if her power itself had a scent. It was a very enticing trap, quite different from the personality that lurked beneath. Her items were impressive, if less numerous, I could only imagine what that axe was capable of.
They were all looking at me. Right, they had asked me my name. "Sylvie Singh." I'd always had trouble with last names, but being a fan of alliteration.. Yeah, I wish I'd come up with something better too. "I am an adventurer, I heard about the bandits who had been attacking local villages and wanted to do what I could. Helping people is always the right thing to do!" As I referenced the words of Ainz's idol Touch Me, I flared my love spot to its full potential with an emphasis on the emotion of trust. My alluring voice backed my words, doing my best to leave a positive impression in whatever form I could find it. Ainz observed me in silence for a second before speaking simply. "Well said."
I was a little disappointed by the response, but Ainz was hard to read, so who knows what effect it truly had.
The village elder begins to offer his profuse thanks to all of us, seeming content to make the claim that without our help the village would have suffered far greater harm, without looking to offend either of us by claiming one as the savior. Soon enough he has invited us all to join him to carry on the conversation inside. Ainz is the first to speak after we have settled into the simple meeting room of the elder who sits behind a table with his wife while Albedo stands guard outside. "I am a hermit who has been studying magic in solitude for some time, but my knowledge of the surrounding area is lacking. Any information you could provide would be helpful." The mayor was happy to fill him in, explaining that they were a border town in the Kingdom of Re-Estize and near the edge of their rivals, the Baharuth Empire to the west. The Slane Theocracy was to the south, a kingdom of human supremacists who I knew had been behind this attack to stoke tension between the Kingdom and the Empire.
Of course I remained mostly silent, the information that I could offer beyond the knowledge of the village elder would be saved for a later conversation. Rather then speak as much as I had originally intended I let my love spot work quietly, building trust without risk of my novice talent at lies breaking the relationship before it began. Or that is the rational that I tried to convince myself of, the truth is that I was absorbed in the power of swirling magics before me, unable to resist the temptation to study them. Ainz was weighing his Yggdrasil coins, trying to determine what value his currency would have here, while his energies flickered in tightly controlled waves around him. As the minutes ticked on something became clear to me, a faint shimmer of color that I had not noticed before, like oil on water. It was a thin strand of color that traced from Ainz's chest outside.. towards the exact location Albedo was surely standing guard outside.
In a flash of insight it became clear, my element of love was showing me the connection between Albedo and Ainz. Understanding what I was looking allowed further understanding as I recognized a flow of energy between the two, a river of energy flowing from outside into Ainz while a noticeably smaller stream flows from Ainz outside. A direct representation of the love shared between them and the relative intensities. Curiosity getting the better of me I casually raise my right hand out as if stretching, allowing it to pass through the stream, I can feel an echo of those emotions. Devotion, passion, love, worship, lust. Loyalty, parental affection, nostalgia. The streams are very different but both pleasant in their own way, a smile curling on my full lips as I let myself drift in the emotions, not my own, but still intense. It was like falling in love, intoxicating, addicting.
The energies coil around my fingers, building up, collecting. Though the energy gathered around my touch the flow didn't seem to diminish, drawing forth water from a river without reducing its source. With a thought the rate of collection intensified as more of the energy flowed to coil around my fingers in an ever brighter glow for several long seconds before allowing my hand to fall back down to my side. The energy danced around my fingers in a shimmering trail, clearly not visible to anyone else based upon their lack of reaction, until I willed it into my pocket space for later examination.
The conversation seemed to be coming to a natural conclusion as the mayor produced a small bag of coins for Ainz and I, his twice the size of mine. If he judged his contribution bigger or if he was paying him double for Albedo wasn't clear, but either way I took the bag with a smile and a small bow of my head in thanks. "This is much appreciated, I know well secluded a village can scarcely afford to support itself most days."
As we were gathering to leave there was a loud and panicked knocking on the door, without waiting for a response a desperate looking villager opened the door and addressed the elder. "Chief, there are more soldiers approaching the village at break neck speed!" The elder's body language spoke of resignation, a deep sigh escaping him. "You don't say.." His attention turned towards us. "Lord Ainz, Lady Singh, I hate to ask more of you.." Ainz stopped him with a raised hand, speaking with calm assurance. "Don't worry, I can handle the situation, please gather the surviving villagers around your house. When you are done come meet me at the town square." "Yes of course, thank you Lord!"
"I will join you, these people have suffered enough today." Before offering him any opportunity to protest I am out the door at a quick march moving forward towards the sound of approaching horses. Ainz follows at an appropriately stately pace, allowing me to out pace him by a moderate distance. It isn't long before a few dozen knights round the hill at a moderate gallop, this time wearing the more moderate earth tones of the Re-Estize Kingdom soliders. At their head is one of the most important human characters in the story line, a large man with a beard dressed in white armor decorated with red bands of color.
He reigns in before me taking a moment to take in my clothing and bearing before seeming to decide that I am fit to receive his message. He speaks proudly, but not unkindly. "I am the Chief Royal Warrior from the Re-Estize Kingdom, Gazef Stronoff. The king has ordered me to hunt down the knights that have been attacking surrounding villages. Your people are safe now, we will do all we can to protect you."
My smile grows as I allow my lures to flare to full effect. This man has the ear of the king, I want him to trust me more then any other. "We thank you for your offer of protection but the knights have already been dealt with. My name is Sylvie Singh, I was fortunate enough to guess correctly on their next place of attack. Most were slain and those who survived have fled in terror. I regret that my timing was not good enough to stop them before the attack, the village has suffered losses and could use any support the king is able to offer in their recovery."
Ainz and the village elder both grow near now as Gazef's attention flicks towards them, a small frown on his lips as he takes in the sight of Ainz. He glances towards the village elder. "Are you the village elder? Who is this man with you? He looks peculiar. "This man sa.." His words are cut off by Ainz as he speaks over him. "No need to worry about that now. It is a pleasure to meet your acquaintance General. My name is Ainz Ooal Gown. I am a simple magic user who stumbled upon this town when it was being ransacked by these knights."
Gazef's eyes sweep between the both of us. Finally his eyes settle back upon me as he speaks with clear respect, honest appreciation rather then formality. "It seems this village was fortunate to have received such assistance. Thank you for everything you've done."
"General!" One of his knights approaches from behind. "We've spotted a large army of unknown origin and they approach from behind as we speak!"
Gazef's reaction is immediate. "Gather the villagers together and setup a defensive perimeter around them while we gather more information." Even as he is speaking I've leapt into the air generating a small sound of surprise from the men as the casual motion sends me several stories into the air to let me see over the local small hills and take stock of what I already knew would be there. Robed men, perhaps 30, surrounding the village at equal intervals with a strange summoned creature beside them. They were a summon called angel something, the exact name escapes me, but they looked more like suits of sleek flying power armor more then an angel to me.
After relaying a brief description to Gazef his response was immediate. "Theocracy soldiers no doubt, looks like they dressed in imperial armor to throw them off." Ainz speaks softly. "As I thought. Does this village hold some significant value?" Gazef's eyes turns towards me in question and I shake my head in dismissal as I respond. "No idea why they are here, I just came to hoping to prevent one more slaughter."
Gazef nods in acceptance of our words. "If neither of you know why they are here, there is only one reason that remains." Ainz understands immediately. "It would seem you are quite despised, chief warrior."
"Indeed. Lucky me, to think even the Slane Thocracy wants me dead."
Before the conversation can go any further I speak up. "Both of you remain here to ensure the village remains safe. I will ensure that the threat is eliminated. And Ainz Ooal Gown.. I'd like to respectfully request that you remain until I return. It should not take long and I have some information that will be of great interest to you in this.. New World." The emphasis on the last two words with a small grin curling upon my lips leaves little room for misunderstanding.
This time the reaction is far more satisfying, audible, a small strangled sound of surprise escaping him as my leap takes me away from him towards the line of waiting summoners.
