CHAPTER 50
Bunta stalked into the hospital elevator with his best friend from highschool following on his heels. Keiichi was a silent reminder to remain calm when he saw his son, yet Bunta found it difficult to swallow all that he was finding out had transpired. Everything he hoped Takumi would accomplish in life might yet be reduced to shattered remnants of a dream. All the time invested in training Takumi to become an invincible driver was getting wasted. His son had almost died in an inconceivable place at the hands of criminals. More information came to light each evening during news broadcasts. The slave compounds Keisuke's gang attacked were getting investigated by the authorities, and government.
One motive for Takumi's abduction had already become an established fact in this criminal case. Mogi's connection to this nearly fatal attack was now a confirmed fact. Her criminal friends had sought coerced compensation for the drugs they lost after she tried to kill Takumi and Keisuke earlier that summer.
Despite his personal disgust with their relationship, Bunta knew Takumi was only alive because of Keisuke's devotion. To the core of his personal foundations, Bunta believed gay relationships were inherently wrong. Yet, if not for Takumi choosing that twisted lifestyle, his son would have permanently vanished off the face of the earth without a trace. Keisuke had fought a very well organized crime syndicate to find and get Takumi back. Without Keisuke's emotional attachment driving him to radical lengths to find Takumi, over one hundred people would still be missing, or dead.
Project D fans seemed enamored with the idea of Takumi and Keisuke getting together. Arguing against their relationship was pointless outside of ramming the reality of Takumi's condition down their throats. Fan debates over Takumi and Keisuke at the triad of major fan websites were to blame for his son's present illness and injuries. Project D fans were partially responsible for putting Takumi and Keisuke into this hospital. Fame had an active role in Takumi's life and death scrape. His son had paid the an even heavier price than he had warned them could happen if they stayed together. The hardest part to swallow was the knowledge that he had never considered the possibility of Takumi's growing popularity and increasing fame could result in such a deadly emergency. His ignorance of possible consequences infuriated Bunta more than anything else.
Bunta was torn between his deeply held beliefs, and the circumstances thrown into his lap by this newest crisis. Part of him felt he had to accept Keisuke remaining the love of Takumi's life. The rest was irritated by the circumstances that had almost killed his son. Keisuke had gone so far as to admitting that he was in love with Takumi to the media. Bunta reluctantly gave his unwanted pseudo son-in-law full credit for having iron clad balls. If nothing else, Keisuke continued proving beyond all doubt that he would never back down in the face of society's sanctions against gay romances. Keisuke was as devoted to Takumi as he was to Kimiko. In spite of how she abandoned them for a wealthier man, Bunta's heart had never wavered in his missing his ex wife. It appeared that Keisuke was the same as himself in that respect.
An evidence review panel was being assembled to examine all evidence collected by the police, and government agencies. Military personnel had been dispatched to keep both slave compounds locked down to prevent evidence tampering. Heavy police presence at each hospital insured the victims safety as they healed.
"Bunta, how do you plan to deal with Takumi when we see him?" Keiichi drug him from his jumbled thoughts.
"I'm not going to yell at Takumi over this, Keiichi. It isn't his fault that he was targeted by sick bastards. He's also an adult and old enough to figure things out on his own. I said my piece about his choosing Keisuke a few months ago. It's up to Takumi to decide whether to risk another hospital stay once he gets out of this one. The evidence points to his popularity getting him abducted. Can't fault Keisuke for Takumi getting hurt, so I don't plan to talk about it with my musuko."
"I'm glad. I was afraid you planned to interfere with those two now that Takumi's been found. We owe Keisuke a great debt because he found and rescued Takumi." Tsuchia replied as the elevator lights blipped at each of the floor levels.
He turned to frown at the famed driver. "I don't have to like their stupidity, Keiichi. However, I know better than anyone that Keisuke kun is the only reason Takumi's alive. Damned punk is even crazier about Takumi than I ever was over Kimiko. Considering everything, I can't be opposed to them getting together. According to last night's newscast, Project D fans are part of the reason Takumi was kidnaped. Criminals abused him to make money off of his fans. Takumi was almost murdered because of his popularity. My training program all these years is part of the reason Takumi's in this hospital. Nothing else matters with that kind of proof slapping me in the face."
Keiichi nodded. "It's a pity that things have become so dangerous for Takumi because of Project D fan sites. However, knowing that fans have an unusually strong acceptance for Takumi's unusual romance might be beneficial for his future. I can teach him how to safeguard himself in the future, Bunta. We need to have faith in Takumi's determination to survive, and return to racing once he recovers. With the fans supporting Keisuke kun's public declaration, they may get slots in the pro circuit because of all the high level publicity Project D is getting at the moment."
Bunta grunted, "World's changing and I don't know that I like it. Don't plan on holding my breath that Takumi's going to get into the pro's when this is over. He may never be able to race again since this happened to him. He may be crippled for life, Keiichi."
The elevator bounced to a stop, doors opening to disgorge them. The pair of men walked up to the nurses station. The world was changing, yet in this case, change had nearly killed his only son Bunta felt. Handing over his driver's license to the nurse on duty, Bunta kept his responses to a minimum. He signed in to visit his son, and got Keiichi clearance with the security detail. Once Keiichi was signed in, they headed toward his son's room in silence. The door was open when they found the room number. Keiichi placed a hand on his shoulder in a silent gesture of support. Keisuke had warned them that Takumi looked terrible the previous night. He stepped into the room and noticed that Keisuke and a toddler were already present.
"Oyaji san, glad you could make it. Takumi fell asleep a few minutes ago. We were just about to head out." The younger man looked tired as he picked up the toddler. His arm was in a sling, so he only had one arm to keep the toddler secured.
Takumi looked worse than Bunta had imagined was possible. None of his blindly drunken fits of violence when Takumi was younger had ever resulted in his son getting so badly hurt. Bunta felt like he was looking upon a stranger. Hollowed eyes and cheeks were proof that Takumi was starved. Dark bruised, deeply concaved lids barely fluttered over protruding, tight skinned cheekbones. A grayish tinged pallor colored all of his son's visible skin. The sheet covering Takumi's torso concaved abruptly at his waist. An IV tube was imbedded in his son's arm. Bunta found it hard to stomach the image in front of him so turned to look at Keisuke. Takumi's savior was holding onto the small child as he stood to leave.
"Who's brat are you babysitting?" Bunta groused while stepping closer to his son's bedside.
"This is Hikaru. My ex girlfriend, Mitani, was one of the prisoners in the maximum security compound. This is her musuko, . . . and mine. I didn't know about him until I broke into the slave compound to rescue minnasan. I'm trying to get my head wrapped around everything that my ryōshin hid from me for three years."
"So does this mean you're going to marry your ex to legitimize your musuko?" Bunta could not keep hope from tainting his voice.
"Mitani's dead, Oyaji san. Even if she wasn't, there's not a chance in hell I'd ever marry her. Hikaru was given to my ryōshin before he was born because Akiho tried to murder me three years ago. She was the same as Mogi, so the courts ordered her to spend her life in an asylum." Keisuke's tone was hard edged.
Keiichi unleashed a soft whistle. "You certainly know how to get into trouble. Don't you, Keisuke kun?"
"Takumi has already changed all of that, Tsuchia san. My troubles have always involved onnas. This mess isn't any different. If not for Takumi's disappearance, I never would have known about Hikaru. My ryōshin said they were told by Akiho's isha sensei that she would never give birth so they didn't bother to tell me she was pregnant. I thought she was unable to have kodomo. To be honest, I'm not certain of all the details yet. Ojīsan is getting the original court records for me. Once I have a better handle on this situation, I'll fill you in on the details, Oyaji san, Tsuchia san. I've got to take Hikaru back to pediatrics now."
Bunta nodded with a soft grunt of assent. Keisuke brushed past him on the way out of the room. He had plenty of questions about the small child in Keisuke's arms. If Keisuke ignored his son in favor of staying with Takumi, their relationship would crumble. Yet, Bunta knew Keisuke well enough to be sure the younger man would fight to keep the toddler and do the right thing by his son. Most likely Takumi would get hurt if Keisuke did fight for custody of his child. Laws never changed half as quickly as public opinion.
Either way, Keisuke had painful choices to make. Having spoken to the press about his being in love with Takumi was going to insure he never got custody of his son. Perhaps that was the reason he had made the decision to publically announce his interest in Takumi. Bunta would not put it past the hotheaded fool to make such a snappy decision.
"You alright, Bunta?" Keiichi asked from his side.
"Just thinking. Keisuke's really screwed himself by coming out about loving Takumi. I don't understand that shonen at all. He is making things a lot harder on himself by saying anything at all."
"Seems to me that Keisuke's protecting Takumi kun any way he can, Bunta. He never acknowledged that Takumi returns his feelings during the press conference. I think Keisuke's determined to take any negative backlash onto himself."
A tired and slurred voice interrupted. "Keisuke doesn't know the meaning of failure. He's determined to get custody of Hikaru, and keep us together."
Stepping closer to the bed, Bunta looked down at his son. "So you're awake, musuko. How do you feel?"
"Like shit." Takumi muttered softly.
Bunta's lips twitched. "You look like you've been through the ringer. I heard you needed a lot of surgery to put your guts back together. You plan on making this a habit?"
"I hope not. Keisuke gets damned annoying when he's being overprotective." Takumi managed to answer.
Leaning closer to catch all of his son's comment, Bunta could not help but snort. "Damn punk better take good care of you from now on, or I'm going to kick his ass. I'm getting fed up with visiting you in hospitals, musuko."
"Gomen, Oyaji. Seems Tokyo Prefecture hates me for some reason." Takumi forced out of his mouth.
Keiichi spoke. "I don't think Tokyo Prefecture hates you at all, Takumi. You seem to have the problem of being too well loved by all the wrong people, cousin. A large crowd are standing around in the cold outside this hospital burning incense and candles while praying for your full recovery. I'd say you're learning the hard way that fame sometimes has a bitter price attached."
Bunta watched as Takumi's eyes fluttered open and he turned his head to look at the foot of his bed. "Tsuchia san, I'm not very famous."
"Not understanding your fame is the biggest reason you're in this hospital bed. You need to start paying close attention to everyone in your surroundings because you are famous, Takumi. It is time for you to learn caution, and how to hide your identity in public. Big framed sunglasses and wearing a cap can prevent people from easily recognizing you. I'll buy you a cap and shades before you get released." Keiichi informed Takumi with a stern gaze.
"Keiichi's right, musuko. Don't argue with him. Your fans, and Mogi chan's crazy stunt are the reason you're in this hospital bed. Trying to deny the situation won't change the results for you or any of your friends." Bunta snapped at his glowering son.
"Fine. How long are you staying this time, Oyaji?" Takumi asked in a surly voice.
"I'm heading back the day after tomorrow. I told the resort about the situation and arranged for another shop to deliver tofu to them for a couple of weeks. The kitchen staff sent their wishes for your speedy recovery, Takumi."
"You should've stayed at home, Oyaji. The shop barely covers the monthly bills. You can't afford to lose the resort contract to your competition. I'm sure Keisuke can keep you informed about how I'm doing." His son growled in a slightly stronger voice.
"Knock it off! Your too sick to lecture me about bills! Let me worry about my own business." Bunta growled back immediately.
"Someone has to watch out for you, Oyaji. At least I give a damn about whether you're doing well or not." Takumi snapped.
"Take it easy you two. Everything's fine back home, Takumi. Minnasan is worried about you since you almost died. Bunta had to be here because you're in such bad shape. He's staying with me, so all of his expenses are at a minimal. "
"Oyaji didn't have to come here to look after me, Tsuchia. It isn't like he can afford my medical bills. Those are my responsibility anyway."
"Keisuke kun already has everything covered. He filled out all the paperwork when you arrived. If it wasn't for him, you'd be dead right now, brat." Bunta grumbled as he dropped into the visitor's chair.
With a heavy sigh, Takumi replied in an exhaustion slurred voice. "You'll never accept that we're together, Oyaji. You're wasting your time if you came to give me an I told you so lecture after disowning me."
"Neither one of us are going to lecture you about Keisuke, Takumi. Bunta and I aren't here to change your mind about committing to him. Believe it or not, we're on your side, and want to see that you recover from all the brutality you've recently experienced."
A soft grunt escaped Takumi's throat. Bunta knew his son was too tired to continue speaking. Rising from the chair, Bunta swiped a hand over his son's head. "Go to sleep, musuko. I'll check on you later this evening after you've gotten some sleep."
