The next afternoon Rei and Hakkai worked side by side, packing things that might be needed for the journey to the West. Most of the morning had been spent with Rei teaching him how to create and hold the fire armor. His was made up of vines but still seemed to be just as effective.
There was a palpable sense of sadness around the inn for most of the day. With two exceptions. One completely expected and one not. Sanzo was threatening to shoot his traveling companions at least twice every five minutes or so along with anyone else who managed to cross his path. That was until Mai decided she'd had enough of it and somehow managed to take the gun away from him. Everyone was fairly certain she only managed it because Sanzo was too shocked by someone not being afraid of him shooting them to do anything about it for a crucial five seconds. She conveniently vanished before he could recover his scattered wits.
Sanzo snorted and swore as he went all over the inn and grounds looking for her. Three hours later he found the gun sitting on the nightstand in his room. Polished and oiled to perfection, not to mention, fully loaded.
Goku padded into the room a few moments later. “Sanzo, do we hafta go now?”
“Yes. Goddamnit, Goku, we've wasted enough time here already,” he said, putting the gun into his sleeve.
“But, Sanzoooo . . .”
“No! Shut your mouth and move your ass. We're going,” he snarled over one shoulder, shoving is smokes and lighter into his other sleeve.
Goku pouted but shuffled out the door, passing Mai as he went.
“Anya's in the kitchen fixing you an on the road snack. That or she's planning to feed an army today,” Mai said with a grin.
Goku bounded down the hallway and stairs in search of Anya and food while Mai leaned in the doorway watching Sanzo pack for the journey.
“What?” he growled, not bothering to look up.
“Do everyone a favor after you finish your Divine mission, oh priesty boy.”
“What's that?”
“Skip going back to the monastery and just come home.”
“The monastery is home,” he said through clenched teeth.
Mai snorted. “You don't believe that anymore than anyone else does. Like it or not, Koryu, your home is wherever those three you travel with happen to be. Since their home is here, so is yours,” she said, turning to go. “Oh, by the way, try to avoid getting killed.”
Sanzo swore at the suddenly empty doorway. “Damn kid is almost as bad as Goku,” he grumbled, shoving the last of his things into the bag. He made his way downstairs to find Rei and Hakkai huddled together at one of the tables, talking quietly.
“Where's the monkey and the kappa?” Sanzo asked dropping the pack in a chair.
“I believe they were saying goodbye to Anya and Xan,” Hakkai said.
“Goddamnit, we're never getting out of here,” Sanzo growled.
“Of course not,” Rei said with a smirk. “Didn't you know it was all an evil plot to annoy you to the point your head exploded?”
Hakkai laughed and Sanzo snarled.
“Oh, calm down. I'll go find them,” Rei said, leanin over to kiss Hakkai. She got up and went to find the other two members of the party.
Sanzo sat down and flipped open the newspaper. “You're coming right back here afterward, aren't you,” Sanzo said.
“It sounds like you're accusing me of some fiendish plot. But yes, that is my intention,” Hakkai said.
“I can't threaten you out of it, can I.”
“Not for anything in the Universe,” Hakkai said with a chuckle and a real smile.
“Fine.”
Hakkai looked over the top of Sanzo's head at Rei, who was returning with Goku, Gojyo and Xan in tow.
“Packed?” Sanzo asked from behind the paper.
“Yeah, your unholiness,” Gojyo said.
“Then get your asses moving,” Sanzo snarled, folding up the paper and stalking outside.
“You boys should get going before he comes back and starts shooting up my inn,” Rei said. “Be careful and know I'll be there if you need me.”
Hakkai smiled. “I know you will be,” he said. “Just remember I love you.” He leaned down to kiss her again, not wanting to let go.
Rei pulled back and took his face in both hands. “I love you too. What you boys are doing is very important, never forget that. Even when it seems like a futile effort.”
“We know.”
Just then Hakaryuu's horn blared and Sanzo's “Goddamnit, get your asses out here,” sounded through the open door.
“Have a safe journey and come home as soon as you can,” Rei said, walking with him to the door.
“We will,” Hakkai said before climbing into the driver's seat and waiting for Goku and Gojyo to get in.
Goku gave Anya one last, sad look before taking the massive basket from her and climbing into the jeep.
Gojyo smirked and kissed Xan goodbye, squeezing her butt as she squeezed his. “Later, babe. Back before you can miss me,” he said.
“Already miss you,” she said. “Hakkai, make sure the only females the crazy kappa gets friendly with are Rosie palm and her five sisters.”
Hakkai chuckled and Gojyo smirked as he bounded into the vehicle.
“Be careful,” Rei called as they pulled away.
“Bye bye, boys! Have fun stormin' the castle,” Xan said.
“Think they'll make it?” Mai asked, coming up behind them.
“It'd take a miracle,” Xan said with a laugh.
Rei watched as Hakaryuu bounced around a corner, trying to hold on to the last possible glimpse of Hakkai. “Fortunately, I believe in miracles.”

Sanzo breathed an audible sigh when they rounded the corner away from the inn. “Finally!” He grumbled, reaching into his sleeve and pulling out his pack of smokes. Only what he pulled from the pack wasn't a cigarette. It was a tightly rolled piece of paper containing five words. Come home safe and soon. He grumbled. “Damn kid.”

Xan leaned on Rei for a moment after the jeep had gone. “Well, General, any orders?”
Rei shook her head. “No. This is something they have to do on their own.”
