Elsa Gray ran down the center of what had once been a busy street. Now, the buildings on either side were piles of twisted brick, cement, and steel.
The only vehicles that navigated the streets this close to the center of the Chaos Zone were military, police, and construction. The soldiers and police officers that patrolled these areas were used to her by now. They even waved at her as she passed them on her morning jog. Haruka had reported similar greetings on her route.
The few random monsters that had survived the elimination of the Chaos Field and still survived were handily defeated by sudden appearances of sailor Senshi. None of the policemen or soldiers ever connected the morning and evening joggers with their fortuitous escapes from death.
Ever since the Chrysanthemum Festival, and her own full realization of her identity as Sailor Titania, Elsa had known a sense of peace and belonging that had eluded her for her entire life. She was accepted, and even loved in a familial fashion. She now had several ‘cousins,’ most of which were more than willing to comfort her at night, either just with a cuddle, or something more physical.
Since the kidnapping of Aster and Lucinda, Elsa had been giving comfort, usually to her primary.
Haruka only showed her devastation at Aster’s loss to her satellites and lovers. The rest of the Senshi, especially the Inner Senshi, had no idea how lost she felt without Aster. Even Michiru and Nathan could barely keep her focused. They needed to find a way to rescue the two cousins, or all of the Planet Warriors might fall apart.
The only thing holding everyone together was Usagi. She made sure that everyone was taken care of, that those with jobs went to them, online classes were attended, and that self-imposed duties, like the twice-daily jogs through the Chaos Zone, were performed. At the end of each day, she would disappear for about an hour with her partner, Thomas. Then she would reappear only to disappear again with Setsuna. Elsa always saw signs of tears in Usagi’s eyes at these times, but she also saw tears in Thomas and Setsuna’s eyes. Everyone missed Aster and Lucinda.
Once again, Metalia had known how to strike at the heart of the group, and take it away. Aster was the center of more than one universe and Lucinda was soul-bonded to Aster’s partner. By taking both of them, most of the strongest Senshi and Kishi were crippled.
Mamoru, Vincent, Takagi, and Sean went through the motions of doing their duties. Usagi and Thomas were more indecisive than they had ever been. Usagi desperately needed to lean on someone, but her partner had lost his primary as well, and her husband had lost his partner. Haruka was weakened as well, leaving only the one Senshi that never let anything distract her: Setsuna.
Lost in her thoughts, Elsa rounded the remainder of a building and ran full-force into someone, sending both of them to the ground.
“Gomen nasai,” she said, climbing to her feet at the same time as the man she had run into. “I was not paying attention.”
“That’s all right,” a hauntingly familiar voice replied. “I was looking for someone.”
Elsa raised her eyes reluctantly to see the face of the man she had collided with. Her blood ran cold as ice as she recognized the features of Jadeite.
“No!” she cried, backing away from him.
“Titania,” he said, holding out one hand. “It’s me.”
Elsa reached up to the hollow of her throat and turned the microswitch on her transmitter. Now, all of the Senshi and Kishi would hear her.
“You won’t catch me that easily, Jadeite,” she said, still backpedaling furiously. “Hyperion is dead. You can’t fool me.” She reached behind her and felt her henshin wand drop into her hand. As always, once accepted, the wand would appear at its owner’s need. She brought the hand forward, wielding the wand as if it were the hilt of a sword.
The man before her took a step forward, his face sad.
“Titania, please,” he said. “It is me, Hyperion.”
“Titania Satellite Power Transform!” she cried, feeling the wind whip around her and her fuku form on her body in place of her clothes as the power of her satellite sang through her veins. When the winds passed, she stood revealed in her midnight blue fuku with forest green bows at breast and back. Like all female satellites, she wore knee-high boots and elbow-length gloves of the same color as her bows.
Before either of them could say or do anything else, the sounds of running feet heralded the arrival of Sailor and Kishi Uranus and Kishi Oberon. The two Uranus fighters stopped between Titania and her opponent, while Oberon stopped directly in front of him.
“Go away, Jadeite,” he said. “I can feel the negative energies from here.”
“Speak for yourself, Nephrite,” he hissed in return. “How dare you masquerade as Oberon. I will kill you for that.”
“Masquerade?” Oberon cried, incensed.
“Wait!” Sailor Uranus said. Both men turned and looked at her.
“You said you are Hyperion,” Uranus said. “Prove it to us.”
“If my primaries were here, it would be simple.” Toshio replied. “However, there are other ways.” He reached up and touched his forehead just above the middle of his eyebrows and exerted a bit of power.
When he removed his hand, the planetary symbol for Saturn blazed there, accompanied by the Roman numeral XV. He then reached up to the necklace that always hung around his neck. He pulled it off, to have it turn in to his kawanaga. He felt his power bind to him and his clothing change into his armor.
“Hyperion!” Titania cried, and then launched herself into his arms, burying her face into his neck.
“Interesting,” Oberon said. “I was under the impression that I was the only one of the four of us to survive, yet here you stand.”
“I remember you running yourself through with a sword,” Hyperion said. “How was I to know you had survived?”
“I remember you contemplating your entrails,” Oberon countered. “Normally, it would not be possible to survive that, either.”
“Then is it possible,” Hyperion began.
“That the others survived, as well?” Oberon finished the thought. He raised hopeful eyes to his fellow guardsman.
“If the others survived as well,” Hyperion said his arms firmly around Titania. “They will come to Tokyo.”
“We just have to wait,” Oberon replied. “In the meantime, welcome back, Hyperion. I am sure that Sailor Mars will be pleased to see you.”
“Once we get past the ‘Jadeite’ problem,” Hyperion said, smiling. “Perhaps I should go like this.”
“Indeed,” Oberon said. “How will you with Titania clinging to you?”
“I still have the powers that Metalia tried to bribe me with,” Hyperion said. “She can show me where you live, and I can take us there.”
“Intriguing,” Oberon mused. “I, too, still have the powers Metalia gave me. I wonder if the others will, as well.
“Only time will tell,” Hyperion said. “In the meantime, why don’t you take us home?”
“Done,” Oberon said. He threw his arms out in a dramatic gesture, and the five of them promptly found themselves in the yard of the Chiba/Fushida compound.
Almost as soon as they arrived, they were surrounded by Sailor Senshi and their partners. Hyperion looked around anxiously, until he saw Endymion and Sailor Moon approaching. He released Titania and sank down to one knee.
Of Endymion’s guards, Hyperion was the researcher, the cool observer, the one who could analyze a situation. He was equally at home in a ballroom, a throne room, or a battlefield. He could analyze them all and give Endymion a correct course of action. He never allowed his emotions to cloud his judgment, even when someone he loved was involved. Hyperion fought with the precision of a surgeon, and the grace of an artist. Watching him fight was like watching a sculptor or a musician
“My Prince,” he said. “I kept to my Oath. I refused Metalia’s offers, and would have ended my life if she had not used her magics to keep me from dying.”
“So, Oberon was not the only survivor,” Endymion said dully. “I wonder how many others there are.”
“Hopefully, all of us,” Hyperion said. He would have said more, but he was interrupted by the approach of Sailor Mars, followed by Sailor and Kishi Saturn.
Hyperion looked at his Guard Partner, face-to-face for the first time in ten thousand years. He stepped forward automatically, coming to a stop less than two feet from her.
“Hello, Rei,” he said. “It’s been a while. Are you still seeing visions in the fires, even though the fires on Mars are out, or did you finally set your hair on fire?”
Sailor Mars’ face registered doubt until he asked her the question. He had always teased her about seeing visions in the fire, claiming that she would set her hair on fire one day.
“The fires on Earth are just as good for visions,” she responded. “Although they aren’t nearly as good for anything else.”
Hyperion smiled at her, reached out, and then drew her into his arms. She tensed for a moment, and then relaxed against him, gazing up into his eyes. They both felt the connection that they had never thought to experience again.
“Minami is whole once more,” Hyperion said. He looked up to see Oberon take the hand of Sailor Jupiter, and to see the looks of longing on the faces of Sailor Mercury and Sailor Venus.
“They’ll come back,” he told them. “I am sure of it now.”
“They better,” Sailor Venus said. “The four of you may be our only hope of getting Sailor Sol and Sailor Terra back from the Dark Kingdom.”
“We’d like to hear your story,” Sailor Moon said. “Why don’t you come inside.”
She detransformed and led the way into the house. She got tea together for everyone, and then sat down and looked at Toshio expectantly.
“I hardly know where to begin,” he said. “I was here, on Earth. There was a political situation happening in one of the minor kingdoms, and Endymion needed my analysis.
“I was in a field office,” he said. “I was scheduled to meet with representatives of the king. I didn’t even look up from my desk when someone came into the tent. The next thing I knew, something had me by the arms, and I was looking at Beryl. She smiled at me, and then we were somewhere else. I couldn’t feel Deimos or Titania anymore. I couldn’t feel anything.
“The youma holding me strapped me to a wall. It pulled a table over to where I could see it. The table was covered with implements that looked like they were designed to cause pain. While I was staring at it, another youma came in with Oberon, and strapped him to the other wall. We just looked at one another while they checked their instruments and our restraints.
“They didn’t ask us any questions. They weren’t trying to get information. They just wanted to see how much pain they could cause without us passing out, or without killing us. They tested out limits, until we were screaming and crying, and then begging them to stop.
“A woman came in. I’d never seen her before. She was beautiful, if inhuman. She looked at me, and then she smiled. ‘You’re mine, now,’ she said. ‘You just haven’t realized it, yet. The only thing that will stop the pain, is if you disavow your former allegiances, and swear yourself to me.’ I heard Oberon roar in outrage. I told her that I would die first. I struggled against my bonds, and they gave out.
“I grabbed the first blade that came to hand. It was about nine inches long, certainly long enough for what I had in mind. I shoved it into my belly, at the side, and I slit my body all the way across. I fell to my knees, and looked down at my entrails, piled on the bloody floor. I heard a youma bellow and I looked up. Oberon had freed himself, and he had gotten a sword. It was stuck through his chest. I saw it vibrate with his heartbeat. He looked at me and smiled as he sank to his knees. I passed out. I expected to die.”
He paused to draw a shaking breath. Vincent handed him a highball glass of whiskey. He smiled gratefully at him, took a long drink, and then continued.
“I woke up next to an odd chamber. The woman was standing next to it. I looked down at my nude body, and saw a scar that crossed my belly. ‘You are a fool,’ she said. ‘I told you that you belonged to me. You will not die until I permit it. Put him in.’
:”The creatures holding me wrestled me into the chamber. I fell asleep. While I was asleep, something tried to invade my mind. I found that I could keep it out by concentrating on Endymion, and Titania, and Deimos. When I woke up, I was led into an audience chamber. The woman was on a throne, up on a dais. She looked down at me and asked me where my loyalties laid.
“I told her that my loyalty was to my prince, now and forever. She didn’t expect that. She looked furious. She got up and walked down the dais very quickly. I was certain she was going to kill me.
“She stabbed one of her nails into my arm. I’m not ashamed to say that I screamed. I felt something snap, and she pulled her nail out, with some flesh and a piece of bone attached to it. She waved the other hand, and another one of those chambers appeared. She threw the meat and bone into the chamber, and it started pulsing, and growing. She turned back to the youma guarding me, and she told them to lock me up.
“They took me to a cell. They shoved me in and locked the door. The cell was empty, except for a framed glass on one wall. It turned out that the glass was a mirror. She made a copy of me, and the glass showed me everything that my copy did.
“She had him capture Deimos and Titania. She had him kill them, in ways that … I still can’t contemplate. She had him torture and kill other Satellites. She sent him to attack Saturn, and destroy the people there. I saw the battle on the moon through his eyes. I saw him go to visit Lucinda and Aster and their brothers.
“That was when I knew that he really was a part of me. He loved Yoshi as much as I did. Metalia did too well. She copied some of my emotions as well. She copied so well, that Yoshi bonded to my copy as if he were me.
“That’s the weakness that the Shitennou have. They’re too much like their originals. If you can get Sol and Terra back, then you can get Kunzite and Zoisite. Get one of them, and the other will follow. Kunzite will be the hardest. Zoisite is the more easily led of the two.
“After they were defeated a few years ago, Nephrite came to get me. He took me in front of Metalia, and she blocked my memories. Nephrite dropped me off in San Francisco. I built a life there, and I didn’t remember anything, until I saw the news footage of you pushing back chaos. Then, I remembered everything. I thought I was the only one. I never dreamed that Oberon survived skewering himself through the heart.”
“You’re back, now,” Hotaru said. “We’ll get Atlas and Janus, too, and then we’ll get Sol and Terra back, and then get the Shitennou out of the Dark Kingdom.”
“Right,” Usagi echoed her. “Nothing to it. We just have to figure out how.”
“We have the second-best strategist back,” Vincent said. “That should help.”
“Just one problem, Goldenrod,” Haruka said, her arms wrapped around Michiru. “They not only have a copy of him, they have Sol, too.”
