Chapter ?: From Trainer to Master
Professor Oak sat in his office studying the form for the Pokemon Master finals. For four years, his adopted daughter Kari had trained hard and traveled everywhere capturing Pokemon and training them to the best of her ability. Now, she would be put to the true test: to become a Pokemon Master.
\"Professor Oak!\" a voice shouted and Ash Ketchum ran in followed by Pikachu, his best friend. \"Hello, Ash,\" he said brightly. \"I thought you\'d be starting your Pokemon journey now.\" \"Nah!\" the ten-year-old boy said. \"I wanted to see Kar kick butt in the Pokemon Master finals.\" \"You just missed her,\" the man said sadly. \"She\'s on her way to Virdian City to prepare. You\'re welcome to travel with me today to watch.\" \"Pika, pika!\" Pikachu chirped brightly and grinned. The yellow Electric Mouse Pokemon was ready to see what the mermaid could do. \"Are you ready, Pikachu?\" Ash asked lifting him in his arms. Pikachu nodded grinning.
Kari sat in the Pokemon Center glancing through the rulebook and sighed. She was a bit nervous about this test and wondered if she could even do it. If she made it, she\'d be the first and only mermaid to make it as a Pokemon Master. \"Kari!\" Nurse Joy called. \"Telephone call for you!\" Kari stood up and walked to the phone. \"Hello?\" she asked. \"Hey, Kari!\" Ash said happily. \"Ash!\" she said in shock. \"I thought you were on your journey!\" \"Not on your life,\" he said grinning on the screen. \"Besides, you promised you\'d go with me, remember?\" \"Oh,\" she said. \"I guess I had my head wrapped up in this battle too long that I forgot.\" \"Pika, pika!\" Pikachu shouted appearing on Ash\'s shouted and waving at her. \"I\'m fine, Pikachu,\" she said brightly. \"We\'re getting ready to go see you tomorrow,\" Ash explained. \"Where\'s Squirtle and Charizard?\" \"I\'ll give you three guesses,\" she sighed. \"I think I catch the message,\" he chuckled. \"Well, see you soon!\" She waved and they hung up.
Squirtle sat outside with Charizard watching some of the Pokemon Trainers practice. Kari walked to them and smiled as she lifted the Water Pokemon in her arms. \"Ash and Papa are on their way,\" she said seriously. They smiled nodding. \"Hey!\" a boy shouted running to them. \"Are you trying out for the Pokemon Master finals?\" \"I am,\" she said nodding. \"My name\'s Ryan,\" he said smiling brightly. \"Mind practicing with me?\" She smiled. \"I would love to,\" she said. \"My name\'s Kari by the way.\" \"I heard about you,\" he said as they walked to a clear area. \"You\'re Professor Oak\'s daughter, right?\" \"That would be me,\" she said proudly. \"Then let\'s battle,\" he said. She grinned and the battle began
Later that afternoon, Kari was eating lunch when a familiar yellow streak ran to them and jumped on the table. \"Pikachu?\" she asked in confusion and glanced up to see Ash and Professor Oak standing there. \"Hey!\" she shouted and hugged them. \"Think we would miss this preformance?\" Professor Oak asked smiling. \"It\'s not until tomorrow, Papa,\" she reminded him. \"I know,\" he said kissing her forehead. \"Have you been practicing?\" She nodded. \"We\'re just taking it easy now,\" she said. \"Besides, I got hungry and so did the boys.\" They nodded smiling. \"Well, we\'re staying at the hotel, so we\'d better get back there and we\'ll be back later,\" Professor Oak said smiling. He touched her cheek as he smiled proudly. \"I\'m very proud of you,\" he said seriously. \"When you came to me four years ago, I never knew I\'d be standing here seeing you heading toward that goal you worked so hard to achieve.\" She blushed and smiled at the same time. \"Thanks, Papa,\" she said and they left.
The next morning, the stadium was packed with spectators and other people. Kari was with the other Pokemon Trainers talking and figuring out where they would be placed. She studied the order to find her name directly near the front of the list. \"Oh boy,\" she said exhaling deeply. \"I wasn\'t expecting this. I thought I\'d be in the back of the line, not the front.\" She sighed and began walking down the hall to prepare for the battle when she noticed three strange figures watching out one of the observation windows at the crowd. One was a girl with long red hair and way too much makeup to last her a lifetime. The other was a boy with shoulder length blue hair and seemed rather laid back. At their feet was a Meowth, who was actually speaking English. The two humans wore white uniforms with the letter R on the front bright red. She narrowed her eyes frowning. It was Team Rocket.
She walked casually past them ignoring the strangoks oks they gave her. \"That girl,\" James said frowning. \"She looks so familiar.\" \"You think you\'ve seen her before, Jimmy?\" Meowth asked in confusion. James nodded and walked behind her when she stopped and turned around. \"May I ask why you\'re following me?\" she said with a hard edge to her voice. \"I don\'t associate myself with losers like Team Rocket.\" \"How\'d you know that\'s who we were?\" Jessie asked in confusion. \"I\'m smarter than you think,\" Kari said glaring at them. \"I\'m not stupid unlike you guys.\" \"I beg your pardon!\" Meowth shouted angrily. \"I\'ll show you who\'s stupid!\" He flashed his claws at her and she backed up slightly. Squirtle and Charizard blocked the Cat Pokemon growling. \"If I were you, I\'d put those things back in your paws and buzz off,\" Kari warned. \"I have to say one thing the these two will attack.\" Meowth knew not to piss them off and did as she said. She flipped her long auburn hair over her shoulder and looked at the Pokemon. \"Come on, guys,\" she said. \"We have a battle to win. We can\'t waste our time with these numbskulls.\" And with that, they walked off without another word.
Kari took a deep breath when it was finally her turn to shine. She stood in her area and looked at her opponent, a strong Fire Pokemon trainer named Bernie. She studied her options and nodded. \"Squirtle, I choose you!\" she shouted. \"And Kari starts off with her Squirtle, of hof her signature Pokemon,\" the announcer said. \"Go, Charmeleon!\" Bernie shouted throwing a PokeBall in the field and the Fire Pokemon appeared. She chuckled lightly. \"Charmeleon, Flame Thrower Attack now!\" he shouted. \"Squirtle, dodge it!\' she shouted. Squirtle missed the attack by inches. \"Now attack with Hydro Pump!\" she shouted. \"Squirtle\'s Hydro Pump has knocked Charmeleon out of the game!\" the announcer shouted in shock. \"Charmeleon is unable to battle!\" the official said. \"Squirtle wins!\" Kari smiled nodding. \"Time to change strategy,\" he said and called forth Arcanine. Squirtle was knocked out of the contest and rested while watching his master fight.
\"I choose you, Onix!\" she shouted as the Rock Pokemon appeared. \"And Kari throws out Onix!\" the announcer shouted. \"Huh!\" Bernie chuckled. \"This match is over and done with! Arcanine! Hit it with your Flame Thrower!\" \"Onix, Wrap Attack!\" she shouted and the Fire Dog Pokemon was in shock suddenly. \"Good!\" she shouted. \"Now use Iron Tail!\" The attack knocked Arcanine out of the match giving the victory to Kari! She was in total shock she couldn\'t believe her ears when they announced her name as the winner. \"I...I won?\" she asked once she found her voice. Charizard and Squirtle ran to her and hugged her as she grinned. \"Onix, return!\" she shouted and looked at the PokeBall. \"Thank you,\" she whispered. The judges wrote a few things down and handed the papers to the officials.
The battles continued until the six finalists stood in a row together. \"Only three of you can become Pokemon Masters,\" the official said seriously. \"The judges have made their decisions and when your name is called, come forward.\" Kari swallowed hard, but stood tall no matter what. The first two names were spoken and a gold medal was given to the winner along with a brand new Pokemon. \"Our last winner is...Kari Oak from Pallet Town!\" Kari was in total shock as she heard the roar of the crowd around her. She grinned and walked proudly to the official, who put the medal around her neck. \"Congratulations, Kari,\" he said shaking her hand. \"You are now a Pokemon Master.\" He handed her a PokeBall and she stood with the other two as they shook her hand.
Ash and Professor Oak ran to her and hugged her close. \"You did it!\" he shouted happily. She smiled and hugged him back. \"I didn\'t t I c I could make it...\" Her voice was cut off by a familiar male voice shouting her name through the crowd. She looked around and saw the familiar spiky hair and handsome face. \"B...Brock?\" she asked in shock. \"Kari!\" he shouted and she ran to him as he caught her in a hug holding her close. \"I\'m so proud of you!\" he said happily and looked at her. \"How did you know I was here?\" she asked. \"Just happened to be in town and found out about the Pokemon Master finals,\" he said seriously. \"It\'s been four years since I last saw you. You look beautiful as usual.\" She blushed as Ash and the others walked to her. \"Guys, this is Brock, the Gym Leader in Pewter City,\" she explained. \"We became rather close on my journey. This is my best friend, Ash Ketchum, my father Samuel Oak, and Ash\'s best friend Pikachu.\" Charizard licked Brock\'s cheek and Squirtle jumped in his arms happily. They missed their old friend.
Two days later, Kari and Ash began a new Pokemon journey together. Brock had to go home to Pewter City to prepare for the Gym Battle between him and Ash. But along with new adventures and new friends, old dangers lay in wait for the friends...
