Part Six: Family Ties
“Don’t touch it!” a woman yelled. They heard running footsteps.
Gojyo froze in place as he turned his head.
Thea looked through her tear-blurred eyes and sniffled, “Cassie?”
Cassandra, Jorja, Scarlet and Tasha were running toward them.
“The spear is probably keeping him from loosing blood.” Cassie stepped up to Hakkai.
Jorja noticed that Cassandra and Tasha were tending to Hakkai and she glared down at Thea.
Jorja grabbed Thea’s ear and pulled her off to the side. “Young lady! You are not allowed to adventure alone! Don’t you ever make me worry about you again! It isn’t safe for you to be out here!” Jorja looked at the girl’s wet face as large tears fell from her eyes. Jorja knelt down and wrapped her arms around her. “You’re worried about Hakkai aren’t you?”
“Uh-huh,” was the tiny, muffled reply.
Cassie looked at the three men. “Ok, we need to get him off the tree, first. Don’t pull out the spear.” Cassie noticed the small dark circle in his green shirt. The spear had to be keeping blood in his body.
Gojyo Goku and Sanzo manhandled Hakkai off the tree. They were very careful not to pull the spear, but the awkward motions jostled Hakkai’s body. His panting increased; they heard a haunting gurgle from him and wet moans escaped his limp face. Cassie cringed. She knew this just got more difficult.
They laid him face-down on the ground, the spear sticking up in the air. Cassie looked at Tasha. “Get ready to close the wound.” Cassie knelt down and put an ear to his chest. She nodded softly. She wrapped her fingers around the spear and placed on hand on his back. She slowly and methodically pulled the spear. No sooner did the tip clear his skin did dark red blood come rushing out. As he panted, they heard the wet gurgle come from the wound. “A sucking wound, damn.” Tasha acted a quick as possible and began to close the wound.
The blood stopped leaving his body, but everyone knew he was far from healed. Cassie looked at Sanzo. “He can’t heal properly while traveling.”
Sanzo nodded his head.
Gojyo looked over at Thea. The little girl was still crying and sniffling. Goku and Sanzo got into position for an arm-ladder carry and lifted Hakkai. Gojyo bent over and picked up Thea. Thea buried her face into his chest, wrapped her legs around his waist, and put her arms around his neck. She grabbed a fistful of hair and wailed. Gojyo patted the back of her head and softy whispered, “Shhh….” Why do I always meet up with the criers?
Jorja led them to a not-too-far off cave entrance and they eventually found themselves in the infirmary.
Kyla came running up to the group. Cassie had them lay Hakkai on a bed. The others stood back and watched as several women in green swooped in around him. Hakuryuu perched on the bed rail near his feet. Cassie barked out orders like a drill sergeant. The scene turned into a blur of chi and bandages. Eventually the medical dance slowed in pace and Cassie turned and looked at the group. “He’ll be ok. He just needs time now.” She scanned the group. “Standing here gawking at him isn’t going to make time pass any quicker. Now, out! Let him rest.” Tasha grabbed a chair and pulled it next to Hakkai’s bed. She clutched one of his hands in hers.
Sanzo debated staying in the room, if for no other reason than he was told to leave.
Jorja walked up to him. “There’s nothing more we can do for him. He’s in good care.”
He kept his eyes on Hakkai’s body. The man looked so fragile lying in the bed. “I’m not worried.”
Jorja glanced at him. “I didn’t say you were.”
Sanzo looked at her. Jorja looked into his eyes. “I insist that you stay here until he wakes up.”
Sanzo knitted his brow.
Scarlet looked at Sanzo. “Yeah, we’ve decided that men aren’t allowed in any other room than the infirmary.”
Gojyo and Goku looked at the women. Gojyo looked at Sanzo. “You’re not going to have them tell you what to do, are you?”
Sanzo scanned their faces. They’re giving me an out.. ”Like hell.” He mumbled as he strode out of the room.
Jorja turned and walked out after him.
Gojyo felt Thea’s breath hitch against him. Gojyo rubbed her back. “Sweetheart, he’s gonna be ok.” He bent down to put her on the floor. Thea was NOT going to let go of him. She squeezed his neck and tightened her legs around him. Gojyo sighed.
Gojyo tightened his hug on Thea and looked at Scarlet.
Scarlet smiled. “Seems you’ve made a friend.”
Gojyo slowly shook his head. “Yeah, I suppose I have.” He looked at the door leading into the infirmary. “Strange, Hakkai’s the one that’s good with children.”
Scarlet began walking down the hallway and Gojyo walked slightly behind her. He noticed the sway to her hips. Oh my god, look at the view.
Scarlet seemed to know he was looking at her and gave her ass a little wiggle for good measure. She giggled.
Gojyo grunted. “You are physically causing me pain. Do you know that?”
Thea wailed again. Gojyo shook his head, Can I ever choose the right words? They made their way through the hallways and eventually found themselves in the mess hall.
Jorja, Sanzo and Goku were sitting down at the table. Goku had a half empty soda. Sanzo had an untouched-getting-cold cup of coffee. Jorja looked up as Gojyo with Thea and Scarlet came in.
Jorja stood up and stretched her hands out trying to get Thea off Gojyo. “Thea, sweetie, come to me.”
Thea pried her wet face from Gojyo and slumped into Jorja’s arms. Jorja sat her down on the table. Jorja pulled a chair up and sat down; they were almost eye to eye.
Gojyo sat down at the table and Scarlet went to go get them some more coffee. Not that she expected anyone to drink it.
Jorja looked at Thea. “He’s going to be ok. He just needs to rest now. I’m sorry I yelled at you.”
Thea sniveled and her bottom lip quivered, “Jorja?” she said pitifully, “I’m a BAD SHERWIFF! “ Thea wailed. Jorja closed her eyes briefly and wrapped her hand around Thea’s head, pushing Thea into her shoulder.
Sanzo cringed.
Jorja pulled away from the young girl. She wiped Thea’s face dry with a napkin and cradled her face in her hand. She looked into Thea’s eyes.
Gojyo knew that look. He saw that look many times when he was growing up. He saw it, but never received it. That look was reserved solely for his brother. That was the look a mother gives her child.
Jorja smiled. “You’re not a bad sheriff. Any town would be lucky to have you as a sheriff. It’s just that sometimes bad things happen. When they happen, you do what you have to do to make them right. That’s what Cassie is doing now. She’s making it right.”
Thea seemed to calm down at the sound of the comforting voice. “I’m firsty.”
Jorja nodded. ”I figured you would be.” She lifted Thea up and sat her in a chair. Jorja got up and went to get Thea some water. Gojyo got up and walked behind her.
Gojyo touched Jorja’s shoulder. “Where’s the father?”
Jorja turned around and looked at the upset red eyes. “Here, there, and everywhere.”
“Does he even know?”
Jorja looked at him. She didn’t like this line of questioning. “I don’t think that is any of your business.”
Gojyo looked at Thea and looked back at Jorja. “He doesn’t know, huh? Do you think that is right?”
“I told you, I don’t---”
“He’s missing out on her life. She’s missing out on him. Do you have any idea what you are stealing from him? From her?”
Jorja looked down at the empty cup in her hand.
Gojyo remembered Thea calling Jorja by her name, not Mother. “Does she even know you are her mother?”
Jorja turned and began to pour water into the cup.
Gojyo turned around and looked at Thea. “Thea, where’s your mother?” His voice was calm and sweet, but loud enough to carry across the room.
Thea looked at him and smiled. This was another question she knew how to answer. “In heaven.” She was very proud of herself again. Scarlet bent over and gave her the praise she was expecting.
Gojyo whipped around and glared at Jorja, “You told her that her mother was dead? How fucking coldhearted is that?”
Jorja glared back at him. “You didn’t ask the right question. Ask her who her mother is.”
Gojyo turned around and took a deep breath. “Thea, who is your mother?”
By this time, Sanzo and Goku knew something was going on in the water sprite’s mind. Scarlet was beginning to look at little tense.
Thea grinned at Gojyo, she knew this one to. “The Merciful Goddess.” She quickly turned to Scarlet. “See? I pay attention to Tasha. Ya’ll don’t think I pay attention in class, but I do.” Scarlet smiled and hugged her.
Gojyo glared at Jorja, his red eyes seemed to pierce through her. “You gave her a religious answer for her parentage? You are raising her as an orphan? This is time you will never get back. Don’t you want to hear, ‘Mommy, I love you.’?”
Jorja looked down and began to tremble. The water in the cup sloshed over the side. She took a deep breath and strode over to Thea. She put on a smile as she gave Thea the glass of water. She looked at Thea’s smile and did her best to suppress her tears. She tilted her head and looked at Gojyo. “Yes, but you don’t understand. It is complicated.”
Gojyo looked at Jorja. “Who does she think her fath--”
Scarlet spoke up loudly, “Hey Thea! I betcha there’s some games going on in the playroom. Why don’t you go and tell your friends about your big adventure?” Scarlet picked up Thea and quickly went to the door.
Thea looked at her. “But, I’m not done with my water.”
Scarlet sat her down in the hallway.” There’s water in the playroom. Run along now.”
Scarlet watched Thea walk down the hallway. Scarlet turned quickly on her heels and glared at Gojyo. “That was uncalled for.”
Gojyo glared back at her. ”That was very much called for.”
Sanzo and Goku were watching the exchange intently and with curiosity.
Gojyo looked down at Sanzo. “They’re raising her as an orphan.”
Sanzo blinked at Gojyo. “There are a lot of orphans here.”
Gojyo’s eyes widened at Sanzo and he pointed his finger at Jorja. “She is Jorja’s child!”
Goku looked at Jorja. He remembered all the times people would talk about their parents and how he had no memories of his parents. How much like an outsider he felt. How unloved he felt. How much it hurt and how lonely he felt when he saw families out together. How much he knew he had missed out on. “That’s not right Jorja.” Goku spoke in a small wavering voice.
Sanzo thought about his parents, if they didn’t want him then, they certainty didn’t want him now. He remembered the times as a child he cried from the loneliness; the times he was singled out. The cutting words that assaulted his ears and hardened his soul. He looked at Jorja.
Jorja slammed her palm down on the table and gripped her forehead with the other one. “It’s not black and white. It is very complicated. I have my reasons.”
Scarlet looked over at Gojyo and saw the anger in his face. “It’s for her own safety.”
Jorja pulled her hand away from her forehead. “Yes, very few people know.”
Sanzo scanned the faces of the group. He remembered the day by the lake. “Homura. She’s what Homura wants.”
Jorja slowly nodded her head. “Yes, now that he knows she exists.”
Gojyo looked at the group, he could feel the weight of the discussion in the air. He sighed. “Since the information is already out, where’s the harm in telling her the truth?”
Scarlet’s eyes softened as she looked at him. “You can’t just drop that bomb on someone.”
Jorja sighed. “Besides, I have to consider the group dynamic.”
Goku looked at her. “That’s cold.”
She looked at Goku. “No, that’s the truth. We are all treated as equals here, bloodline doesn’t matter. How you live, how you share your knowledge, what you do; that’s what separates you, not your parentage. Thea’s too advanced for her own good. I know that is her bloodline, but I can not have her doubting her abilities. I can’t have her thinking she gets special attention because she’s my daughter. She gets special training because she is advanced. She needs to be ready. One day, Homura will come after her. If that day is tomorrow, I need her to be ready.”
Gojyo sat down. “That doesn’t explain why her father doesn’t know.”
Jorja put bother her hands over her face. God damnit! Why can’t you shut up? Do you really think this is easy for me? Shit! She sighed. “Gojyo ….please….”
Gojyo jumped up from his chair. “Fine!” He turned quickly and stormed out of the dining hall. Scarlet jumped up and went after him.
Jorja sighed. She looked at Sanzo and Goku. “I don’t expect you to understand. Please believe me when I say I have my reasons.”
Sanzo looked at his cold coffee and set the cup down.
Goku nodded his head. “Hey Jorja?”
“Now, is not the time Goku.” Sanzo spoke flatly.
Jorja smiled at Goku. “Sure no problem.” Jorja stood up and went to go make something to eat.
Goku wondered why everyone just assumed he was asking for food. He looked down at his hands.
