Part Six: Still Haunted
Tasha watched Hakkai sleep. His tender hand draped limply over hers. With her free hand, she should tease his fingers with little, gentle jolts of chi. His muscles would twitch.
“That’s feels strange.” He muttered. He slowly opened his eyes and looked at her. He mustered a weak smile.
She stood and bent over to kiss him. Her lips seemed warm and soft against his. He felt his muscles melt into the mattress. She gently pulled her face away from him and looked into his green eyes. She smiled and sat back down.
The kiss invoked all sorts of memories, he’d have rather not experienced. He closed his eyes and pulled his hand away from hers. He slowly opened his eyes and looked at his hands…hands that were gloved in blood that he couldn‘t wash away Try as he might, he simply couldn’t get them clean. He shifted his eyes toward her warm pink gaze. He knew he couldn’t allow himself to care for her. Everyone he cares for gets hurt and he didn’t want his bad karma to effect her. If he was going to protect her , he’d have to push her away. He balled his hands into fists and swallowed. “I appreciate all you have done for me, but….” His voice trailed off. Hakuryuu probed hreenreen gaze.
She nodded and slightly smiled, she felt her heart break. “You’re not alone in there are you?”
Hakkai couldn’t keep his composure and speak. He simply shook his head.
“Her?” Tasha softly inquired.
Hakkai squeezed his eyes shut and nodded his head.
She patted his arm as she stood. “I understand.”
Then, explain it to me. Hakkai heard the curtain get drawn back and slide closed. Hakkai looked at Hakuryuu. “As long as her blood is on my hands, I cannot allow myself to love again.” Hakkai broke into a sob and pushed his face into his pillow.
Hakuryuu draped her neck across his and unfolded her wings to hold him. The burn behind her eyes made her wish for tear ducts. Why, oh , why must you keep punishing yourself for what is not your fault? How can I let you know it is all right? More than anything else in the world, Hakuryuu wished to go back in time. I just want you to be happy.
Hakkai slipped an arm around Hakuryuu’s small sleek body and pulled the little dragon in close to him. “Gods! Why does it still hurt so bad?” He whispered, “Somebody kill me.” He eventually cried himself to sleep.
