  • Chapter 6

    Written by: Fox

    Notes:

Chapter two of the really odd kind. One more after this and then it’s pure story without inspiration from the Grimm trip!

This story is the original version of Snow White.

I’m a bad kid for not saying this last chapter, but the originals belong to the Grimm brothers. *nods*

Also, Kouchin is the court musician shiki that Tsuzuki has, as is Daion (the pot) and Taimou (the faceless one.). I thought I’d mention this since I couldn’t remember their names and figured most people might not know them by their names either since they’re the least introduced characters. XDD

This chappie is a little spoofier since it involves these three as main roles.

And yes, I know some of it comes off like the three bears, but I swear that’s how the original was!

    ~*~

Tsuzuki grimaced as bright light hit him full in the face, almost like a flashlight had suddenly shined on him. He blinked and slowly sat up, finding himself in a large field of snow. He carefully stumbled to his feet, his body aching as if it had been thrown into a brick wall. He winced and held his side, a particular stitch reminding him that he could still feel pain as he took a careful look around himself through the slowly falling snowflakes.

Around him he saw nothing but snow covered conifers and the occasional twig of a tree coated in the fluffy snow. Nearby a deer stepped carefully out from behind a tree and sniffed at the ground, it’s ears flicking back at forth before it lifted it’s head and bounded across the open space to hide behind another tree.

He watched the deer move and as it crossed behind him he turned and noticed for the first time the large looming castle. In the distance and moving rather rapidly toward was a small white covered male, his large, black hemmed sleeves flapping behind him.

“TSUUUUZUKIIII!” Byakko yelled as he pounced on the taller male.

Tsuzuki grunted in pain as he fell back into the snow. His body still ached and not being able to prepare for the over enthusiastic glomp left him open for the fall.

“Haiiii! Welcome to Snow White!” Byakko said enthusiastically. He blinked down at Tsuzuki from his position above the shinigami, his knees on either side of Tsuzuki’s torso. “I didn’t think you were ever going to get out of Cinderella to see me! You must have figured out the clue really easy.” he said knowingly.

Tsuzuki blinked at him. “The clue?”

Byakko’s eyes widened. “You mean...” he lowered his voice to that of a conspirator’s. “... you snuck out of Cinderella to come see me? Genbu is going to be pissed!”

    Tsuzuki blinked. “Genbu...”

“You didn’t know? This is Genbu’s game! Didn’t Kurikara tell you anything?!” Byakko asked, sounding very scandalized.

Tsuzuki shook his head slowly. “No.. He just said I had to pass the worlds to learn something. But Hisoka is lost too!” He stood up quickly, knocking Byakko off as he did so. “I have to find ‘Soka! He might be lost!”

Byakko grabbed his sleeve. “No! He hasn’t been born yet!”

“WHAT?!” Tsuzuki blinked at him in shock.

“It’s part of this world. Here...” He pulled Tsuzuki toward the castle.

As they walked through the huge door and into the extravagantly decorated halls Byakko turned to look at him.

“So just how did you get here if you didn’t finish Cinderella?”

Tsuzuki blushed. “I... We did finish it.”

Byakko thought a moment, then grinned widely. “I see, Hisoka figured out the answer!”

Tsuzuki nodded as they passed a large silver suit of armor. He sighed. “A demon... But what would that have to do with anything?” he asked, his brow furrowing in frustration.

    Byakko shushed him. “We’re here.”

He pressed open the door that they stood outside of and smiled.

Inside Taimou sat in a plush rocking chair, sewing a small blanket. The corner was torn and she was moving her fingers skillfully as she worked. On her head was a glamorous tiara that sparkled in the fading sunlight. The window next to her was framed in a rich ebony, and seemed to make her happy with it’s deep color.

While she sat there sewing she would occasionally glance up and look out of the window to watch the softly falling snow. Once as she was doing this she didn’t watch the needle as she pressed it through the soft fabric. The needle slipped and pricked her finger, and as she pulled her hand away to suck on the slightly bleeding digit, three drops of blood fell upon the snow covered ledge beside her.

Immediately she thought that the red looked pretty against the white snow. “Would that I had a child as white as this snow, as red as my blood, and as black as the wood of the window-frame.”

As she finished saying this time began to flash and swirl around Tsuzuki, leaving a few important images in his mind. One was of Taimou and Daion in bed together, then of Taimou holding her belly as she looked in a mirror, then finally of Taimou standing and talking to a few other females, her belly gently extended. Then things began to slow and he found himself watching Taimou clutching the sheets as she began to give birth in her room.

Byakko began to bounce back and forth from foot to foot as he smiled at the scene. “You wanted to see Hisoka ne? Well here he comes!” he said brightly.

Tsuzuki couldn’t help his curiosity as he walked over to watch the boy being born. Slowly his head peaked out until he seemed to just slip out and into the waiting hands of Watari, whom was the doctor, and began to scream for air.

Byakko took one look at the crying and curled up Hisoka while Watari washed him off and recited Taimou’s words. “His skin is as white as the snow... his lips as red as her blood that day... and his hair... it looks as black as the window frame...”

Tsuzuki nodded quietly. “He looks more like Hijiri than Hisoka right now.

The exhausted Taimou smiled at the child. “He will be known as Snow White.” she announced quietly. She then slowly slipped into sleep before dying.

Again timed whirled around him and once Hisoka (who’s hair had lightened to have blonde streaks in it) was a bubbling year old, Daion entered being held against the chest of Kouchin. Apparently he had remarried.

She seemed to be a beautiful woman, but her attitude was that of being proud and haughty, and she could not bear that anyone else could surpass her in beauty. Once of the many items that she had brought with her was a wonderful, enchanted, gilded mirror.

When ever she chose to, she would stand in front of it and look at herself. She would then quietly speak to her reflection, reciting the spell to make the mirror speak.

    "Looking-glass, looking-glass, on the wall,
Who in this land is the fairest of all?"

The looking-glass would immediately shimmer and answer her truthfully.

"Thou, o queen, art the fairest of all."

Only when she did this was she satisfied as she knew that the spell on the mirror caused it to only speak the truth.

But Hisoka was growing up, and was becoming more and more beautiful as time passed. When he was seven years old people would comment on how he was as beautiful as the day, and had already become more beautiful than Kouchin herself.

Immediately infuriated at how the people spoke, she went to her mirror.

    "Looking-glass, looking-glass, on the wall,
Who in this land is the fairest of all?"

It shivered and shone as it answered.

"Thou art fairer than all who are here, lady queen.
But more beautiful still is Snow White, as I ween."

Kouchin was shocked, and became envious. From then on, whenever she looked at Hisoka she became physically ill, she hated the boy so much. Her envy and pride grew in her heart like a weed so badly that she had no peace day or night.

Deciding that she wanted him dead, she called a hunter to come see her.

Terazuma arrived, his clothes mostly made from animal skin, and a long knife strapped to his side. Slowly he approached Kouchin and knelt before her.

“You called for a hunter, queen?”

Slowly she turned to him. "Take the child away into the forest. I will no longer have him in my sight. Kill him, and bring me back his lungs and liver as a token."

    Terazuma nodded in obedience.

He would look around sneakily as he walked toward Hisoka’s favorite spot deep in the roses of the garden. Hisoka was sitting quietly among the bushes smiling softly as he watched the multi-colored butterflies flit back and forth, their wings fluttering as they danced from sweet scented bud to sweet scented bud. He reached out and petted a small silk worm gently and chuckled at the soft skin of the worm. The sun bathed him gently and brought out the golden highlights of his hair softly.

Terazuma watched quietly, holding his breath at the beautiful picture the boy made. He then shook his head to clear it of his own thoughts before he silently stepped up behind the boy and grabbed Hisoka around the middle. Hisoka immediately began to flail and opened his mouth to scream, but being weaker than Terazuma and slower to react, Terazuma was able to quickly cover the boy’s mouth and hold him still with one arm before running off to the nearby woods.

Once they reached a clearing deep in the woods Terazuma turned Hisoka around to face him and drew his knife. He hesitated when he noticed tears begin to well up in Hisoka’s beautiful green eyes.

"Ah dear hunter, leave me my life! I will run away into the wild forest, and never come home again." Hisoka begged.

Because of Hisoka’s beauty and gentle nature, Terazuma couldn’t help but pity him. "It’s a cruel fate to have a mother like Kouchin whom envies your beauty more than life itself.”

Hisoka slowly backed away from Terazuma as Terazuma let him go. He rubbed his eyes to clear them of tears. “I’d give her my beauty if I could.”

Tearzuma turned away from him. “Run away then, you poor child." he said as he sheathed his knife. ‘The wild beasts will soon have devoured you,’ he thought. He sighed as he watched Hisoka run off.

Hisoka nodded to Terazuma’s back before turning from him and running off, his slippered feet slipping on the grass every few steps.

As Hisoka rushed away, a young brown bear came walking into the clearing, sniffing at the ground. Terazuma watched it and smiled, thankful for the chance. Immediately he attacked the bear, his knife easily slitting the bears throat, causing it to bleed to death. Carefully he cut out its lungs and liver and took them to Kouchin as proof that the child was dead.

When Kouchin saw the organs she ordered the cook to salt them before she devoured them raw, her hands and silverware coated in blood. She seemed pleased when she finished as she thought she had eaten the lungs and liver of Snow White.

Both Byakko and Tsuzuki looked away as she ate, Tsuzuki’s stomach lurching somewhat at the thought of eating internal organs raw.

Suddenly there was a flash and Tsuzuki found himself with the terrified and alone Hisoka. He reached out only for his hand to pass through Hisoka’s body as he looked at all the leaves on the trees in the forest, and began to softly cry as he did not know what to do.

There was a loud crunch as a deer walked past and Hisoka immediately stood and ran, wincing and crying out softly as he stepped on sharp stones and through bushes heavy with thorns. The wild animals would watch and run past him, but didn’t harm him. He ran as long as his feet would carry him but became exhausted once it was almost evening. He looked around him for somewhere to stay when he saw a little cottage.

Carefully he walked up to the cottage and knocked, only for the door to swing open slowly.

“H-hello? Is someone there?” he called as he stepped in.

Everything in the cottage was small, but neat and clean. In the center of the house was a table with a white table cloth. There were seven small chairs set around the table, and in front of each chair was a little plate, a little spoon, a little knife and a little fork, all complimented by a little mug.

On the other side of the house against the wall stood seven little beds side by side, and covered with snow-white comforters.

Hisoka looked toward the kitchen and was so hungry and thirsty that he couldn’t help but to eat some vegetables and bread from each plate and drink a single drop of wine out of each mug. He thought it might be rude to take all from one setting. He promised to the owners that he would find a way to repay them.

He yawned and looked at the beds. Perhaps they wouldn’t mind him repaying them for a little sleep as well? He went to the beds, but found that none of them suited him. One was too long, another too short... At last he found that the seventh one was right, and so he remained in it, said a prayer and went to sleep.

When night had completely fallen the owners of the cottage came back. The owners were seven dwarfs who spent all day long digging in the mountains for ore and gems. As they lit the candles in the cottage, they immediately saw that someone had been there as everything was in a different order from which it had been left.

The first looked at his slightly leaning chair. "Who has been sitting on my chair?"

The second looked at his plate of food and grimaced. "Who has been eating off my plate?"

The third picked up a piece of his bread with a nibble out of it. "Who has been taking some of my bread?"

The fourth looked at his vegetables in confusion. "Who has been eating my vegetables?"

The fifth picked up his fork and immediately tossed it on the ground. "Who has been using my fork?"

The sixth looked at his knife and shuddered. "Who has been cutting with my knife?"

The seventh looked in his mug and then up at the others sadly. "Who has been drinking out of my mug?"

That’s when the first looked around and saw that there was a little hollow on his bed. "Who has been getting into my bed?"

One by one the five of the others came up and each looked up. "Somebody has been lying in my bed too."

But the last one went and he looked at his bed saw Hisoka, who was asleep in his own. Immediately he called the others over who came running up, and they each gasped in astonishment. They quickly grabbed their candles and let the light fall on Hisoka.

"Oh heavens, what a lovely child." They murmured.

They were glad when they noticed that they didn’t wake him up, but decided to let him sleep on in the bed, the seventh dwarf sleeping one hour with each of his companions as the night wore on.

When morning came Hisoka woke up slowly and was frightened when he saw the seven dwarfs, but they were friendly and asked him what his name was.

"My name is Snow White," Hisoka answered quietly.

"How have you come to our house?” asked the dwarfs.

Slowly and quietly Hisoka told them that his step-mother had wished to have him killed, but that the hunter had spared his life. He talked of having to run the whole day until at last he had found their small home. He then apologized for eating and drinking their food and wine, and for taking the seventh’s bed.

The First dwarf looked at her and smiled as he came up with an idea. "If you will take care of our house, cook, make the beds, wash, sew and knit, and if you will keep everything neat and clean you can stay with us and you shall want for nothing."

"Yes, with all my heart." Hisoka agreed, and thus she was allowed to stay with them.

He busily kept the house in order for them. In the mornings they went to the mountains and looked for copper and gold, and in the evenings when they came back their supper was warm and ready.

Since Hisoka was alone all day, the dwarfs gave her a warning. "Beware of your step-mother, she will soon know that you are here, be sure to let no one come in."

But Kouchin, believing that she had eaten Snow White's lungs and liver, could not but think that she was again the first and most beautiful of all. Triumphantly she went to her mirror.

    "Looking-glass, looking-glass, on the wall,
Who in this land is the fairest of all?"

    And the mirror quietly answered.

"Oh, queen, thou art fairest of all I see,
But over the hills, where the seven dwarfs dwell,
Snow White is still alive and well,
And none is so fair as she."

Kouchin was astounded. She knew right away that the huntsman had betrayed her, and that Snow White was still alive.

Again she started to plan how she might kill her, for so long as she was not the fairest in the whole land, envy consumed her. Finally she smiled as she came p with a plan. Acting quickly she painted her face, and dressed herself like an old merchant woman, and no one recognized her.

Tsuzuki blinked. “No one knows it’s her? But... she has no face!”

Byakko smacked his hand. “Just go with it already!”

The area around them blurred as Kouchin traveled in her disguise as she went over the mountains to the seven dwarfs’ house and knocked at the door.

"Pretty things to sell, very cheap, very cheap."

Hisoka looked out of the window cautiously. "Good-day my good woman, what have you to sell?"

"Good things, pretty things." Kouchin answered, "Stay-laces for your dress shirt of all colors." and she pulled out one which was woven of bright-colored silk.

‘What harm is there if I let the gentle old woman in?’ thought Hisoka as he unbolted the door and bought the pretty laces.

"Child, what a fright you look, come, I will lace you properly for once." Kouchin offered.

Hisoka agreed without suspicion, and stood before her, his arms out to allow the middle of his shirt to be laced tightly with the new laces. But Kouchin laced him so quickly and so tightly that Hisoka lost his breath and fainted as if he were dead.

"You were the most beautiful," said Kouchin to herself, and ran away.

Not long afterwards, the seven dwarfs came home. They were shocked when they saw their dear Snow White lying on the ground, seeming to be dead. They lifted him up, and looked him over. As they saw that he was laced too tightly, they cut the laces. Slowly he began to breathe a little, and after a while came to life again. When the dwarfs heard what happened they frowned.

The first one looked at him. "The old woman was no one else than the wicked queen, take care and let no one come in when we are not with you."

But when Kouchin had reached home she went straight to her mirror.

    "Looking-glass, looking-glass, on the wall,
Who in this land is the fairest of all?"

    And it answered as before:

"Oh, queen, thou art fairest of all I see,
But over the hills, where the seven dwarfs dwell,
Snow White is still alive and well,
And none is so fair as she."

When she heard that, all her blood rushed to her heart with fear. She paced and paced, and with the help of witchcraft, which she knew, she made a poisonous comb. She carefully disguised herself and took the shape of another old woman.

Again she went over the mountains to the cottage and knocked at the door. "Good things to sell, cheap, cheap."

Hisoka looked out the window. "Go away, I cannot let anyone come in."

"I suppose you can look," said the old woman, and pulled the poisonous comb out and held it up.

Unfortunately Hisoka enjoyed having his hair combed and he couldn’t help but let himself be tricked, and opened the door.

Once a deal was struck the old woman smiled. "Now I will comb your hair properly for once."

Hisoka nodded let the old woman do as she pleased, but hardly had she put the comb in his hair than the poison in it took effect, and Hisoka fell down senseless.

"You paragon of beauty, you are done for now," she said and went away.

Fortunately it was almost evening and the seven dwarfs came home. When they saw Snow White lying as if dead they at once suspected the step-mother. They looked over him carefully and found the poisoned comb. They quickly took it out and Hisoka came to and told them what had happened. They warned him once more to be on his guard and to open the door to no one.

Kouchin, at home, went in front of the mirror.

    "Looking-glass, looking-glass, on the wall,
Who in this land is the fairest of all?"

    It shivered and responded.

"Oh, queen, thou art fairest of all I see,
But over the hills, where the seven dwarfs dwell,
Snow White is still alive and well,
And none is so fair as she."

When she heard this she trembled with the force of her rage. "Snow White shall die, even if it costs me my life."

Angrily she went into a secret room where no one ever came, and there she made a very poisonous apple. Outside it looked pretty, white with a red cheek, so that everyone who saw it longed for it, but whoever ate a piece of it would surely die.

When the apple was ready she painted her face, and dressed herself up as a farmer's wife. Once at the dwarves’ home she knocked at the door.

Hisoka put his head out of the window. "I cannot let anyone in, the seven dwarves have forbidden me."

"It is all the same to me," answered the woman, "I shall soon get rid of my apples. There, I will give you one." Kouchin said, placing it on the windowsill.

"No, I dare not take anything." Hisoka replied, not looking at the apple.

"Are you afraid of poison?" asked the old woman, "Look, I will cut the apple in two pieces, you eat the red cheek, and I will eat the white." she said, knowing that the apple was made so that only the red cheek was poisoned.

Hisoka longed for a piece of the apple, and when he saw the woman eat part of it he reached out his hand and took the poisonous half.

Kouchin watched as he bit into the apple and coughed, turning pale before slowly falling to his knees.

She looked at him with a delighted smirk. "White as snow, red as blood, black as ebony-wood, this time the dwarves cannot wake you up again!"

When she asked the mirror at home:

    "Looking-glass, looking-glass, on the wall,
Who in this land is the fairest of all?"

It paused for a moment before it answered.

"Oh, queen, in this land thou art fairest of all."

When the dwarves came home in the evening and found Snow White lying upon the ground, he was dead. They lifted her up and looked to see whether they could find anything poisonous. They unlaced him, combed his hair, washed him with water and wine, but it was all in vain. The poor child was dead, and remained dead.

They laid him upon one of the beds, and all seven of them sat around it and wept for him for three days. After the third day they decided to burying him, but he still looked as if he were alive.

"We can not bury him in the dark ground." Said the seventh dwarf, and they had a coffin of glass made so that he could be seen from all sides. Carefully they laid him in it, and wrote his name in gold letters across the front. It also stated that he was a king's son.

Reverently they put the coffin out upon the mountain, and one of them always stayed by it and watched it, and birds came and cried at the sight; first an owl, then a raven, and last a dove.

Years passed around Tsuzuki as suddenly his clothes glowed. He blinked as e found himself in a prince’s outfit. Byakko smiled and shoved him out of the moving time stream. He looked at Hisoka laying in the coffin, untouched and looking as if he were asleep.

"Let me have the coffin, I will give you whatever you want for it." He blinked as he fell into the part easily.

"We will not part with it for all the gold in the world." replied the dwarf guarding him.

"Let me have it as a gift then, for I cannot live without seeing Snow White. I will honor and prize him as my dearest possession." Tsuzuki replied earnestly.

The dwarves couldn’t help but take pity on him and gave him the coffin.

Tsuzuki immediately had it carried away by his servants. As they traveled the servants stumbled over a tree-stump, and dropped the coffin. With the shock of the bump from the coffin dropping the poisonous piece of apple which Hisoka had bitten off came out of his throat.

Slowly he opened his eyes and pressed the lid of the coffin away. "Where am I?" she asked groggily.

Tsuzuki’s eyes widened and he went to Hisoka’s side. "You are with me."

Slowly he told Hisoka of finding him on the mountain and of the piece of apple that had just come out of his throat.

"I love you more than everything in the world. Snow White, please come with me to my father's palace. I wish you to be my wife." Tsuzuki said quietly, holding Hisoka’s hand, his eyes gazing into Hisoka’s.

“Y-you love me?” Hisoka asked quietly.

    “Yes Snow White.”

Hisoka smiled with tears in his eyes. “I don’t know why... but that makes me so happy.”

Tsuzuki smiled and took them home to his palace. Their wedding was huge and beautiful, the most luxurious and splendid event in years.

But Kouchin was also invited to the feast. When she had finished dressing in her most beautiful clothes she went to her mirror.

    "Looking-glass, looking-glass, on the wall,
Who in this land is the fairest of all?"

    The glass shivered.

"Oh, queen, of all here the fairest art thou,
But the young queen is fairer by far as I trow."

Upon hearing this, she became infuriated. At first she would decided not go to the wedding at all, but had to go just to see the young queen. As soon as she arrived Kouchin recognized Snow White, and she stood still with rage and fear.

Tsuzuki had already had iron slippers put on the blacksmith’s forge in anticipation of Kouchin’s arrival. Quietly Kouchin was led to the forge and the slippers were pulled out of the fire with tongs. They glowed bright red as they were set before her. They wouldn’t even listen to her protests as she was forced to slip her feet into the red-hot shoes. The pain that coursed through her was too much and she couldn’t help but dance around, trying to lift her feet from the shoes without touching the tops of them. Unfortunately the pain was so much that it very slowly killed her.

Slowly realization seeped into Tsuzuki’s eyes as the world melted and blended together around himself and Hisoka, leaving them in an expanse of white. He blinked slowly and then started to crawl toward Hisoka, but a swift and dark glare from the boy made him stay still.

Across from them and looking sad was Byakko.

“Hisoka, Tsuzuki... here’s my riddle: One wants me, the other wishes escape from me. I am dirty and full of malice, but sometimes am mistaken for love.”

This time Tsuzuki answered first, his voice shaking slightly as realization began to sink into his brain. “Rape.”

He looked toward Hisoka and then away before the white faded into black and left him alone again.
