~~~ Chapter 5 ~~~
Darkness.
Her blindfold was pressing down hard against her eyes, making her see strange blue-black spots of light amid the blackness. Her hands and feet felt numb from the tight bonds that tied her wrists and ankles together. But worst of all, she believed she was developing a headache from constant bumping against the floor of the vehicle.
Since her eyes were useless for the moment, Electra used her remaining senses to try to decipher her surroundings. From how the car was moving, it was obvious to her that they were taking a narrow winding road and that the driver they have was speed crazy. Her fellow occupants of the van were quiet apart for some whispers which could not be heard over the wild screeching of the car as it made constant turns. Electra supposed that she was being brought to the gang's hideout, whereever it was. She was still unable to figure out Vicious' purpose in keeping her captive but she'd be damned if she stayed one for long. She'd have to find a way out and soon.
Finally, the van rolled to a stop and Electra felt the door slide open. Someone grabbed her arm roughly, forcing her to find her balance quickly if she didn't want to lose her dignity by ending up sprawled on the pavement. Another car drew to a stop just behind them and Electra heard four men get out. Then she felt herself being dragged away and up a staircase.
"What? Your boss can't afford elevators?" Electra muttered under her breath as one of her captors pushed her up while another one kept a rough hand on her elbow. "All right already. You don't have to push," Electra said through clenched teeth as she struggled to regain her balance, but was unable to. She "fell."
"Shit!" The one who had been holding her elbow exclaimed while his companion hurried down to where Electra lay unmoving at the bottom of the steps. He crouched to see if she was alright when he felt rather than saw Electra deftly twist her body so she was facing him while still lying down. The headbutt she gave him turned his mind to pulp and rendered him unconscious.
Electra made full use of the split-second this afforded her. She raised herself up and with her tied up hands reached for the pocket-sized combat knife she always carried in her boot. Just when she got hold of the knife, the other man reached her and tried to stop her. Electra heard the whoosh of air as he issued a kick and she dodged this one without any trouble. Then she cut her bonds and her hands were free.
She used her now free hands to grab the man's leg as she issued his next kick and pulled him, using his momentum to throw him across the room. After that, she slipped the blindfold from her eyes and cut the remaining bonds that tied her feet together. She knew she only had a few seconds to spare before the others would realize what happened so she quickly searched through the pockets of her first attacker but found no guns. Damn. She looked over to the other man some distances away, debating whether to search him for weapons too or save more time by just crossing her fingers and making her escape. A second passed and Electra made her decision. The knife would have to do.
The place was deserted. Obviously, they all thought that Electra would pose no problem for them. That pleased her and at the same time, it placed her on edge. After all, Vicious did not look like a man to be fooled of so easily. Still, she couldn't help feeling relieved. Perhaps he really did make a mistake this time and underestimated her.
Moving cautiously, Electra kept her back to the wall and her knife tightly clutched in one hand. Her eyes darted towards where the cars were parked. That was her target and it seemed the coast was clear. She ran towards the second car knowing that the door was unlocked. But just for assurance, she checked and was relieved to find that she was right. She opened the door and quickly slid in, not even bothering to check the backseat. Her hand automatically went for the ignition where the key should be if it was still there at all.
It wasn't.
She checked the dashboard and then pulled the small compartment on the car's ceiling. No key. Damn.
"Looking for this?"
Electra nearly screamed when she heard the voice speak behind her. The rearview mirror showed her the pale, cold eyes of Vicious. He was calmly holding up the car keys to her, one eyebrow raised in question.
Electra stared at him, stupefied into speechlessness for a full second before she regained her wits. Her gray eyes turned murky then, making them hard to read. A reluctant smile tugged at Vicious' lips as he dropped the keys on her lap then nonchalantly said, "Then by all means. I was in the mood for a drive anyway."
Electra gritted her teeth and considered wiping out the arrogant tilt to the man's jaw with a slice of her knife. Something of her intent must have shown through her the dormant gray of her eyes for Vicious' eyes narrowed, showing only a glimmer of pale blue through his thick lashes. "Don't," he said, his tone a warning. Then he leaned back against the seat of the car and appeared to stretch. "Drive, Ms. Ovilo. You'll be surprised to find there is much beauty in this wretched world of ours."
Although his whole manner spoke of perfect calmness, Electra knew that there was hidden violence in every action that he made. His whole person emanated a suppressed violence so powerful it was almost physical. Still not speaking, she slid the key into the ignition and started the car. From the rearview mirror, she caught Vicious' eyes staring at her intently before a thin smile appeared briefly on his immaculate face before he closed his eyes and appeared to sleep.
Electra held her breath as thoughts of escape filled her mind once more. Keeping a careful eye on Vicious in the rearview mirror, she gently eased the car out of the driveway. She realized that they were inside some sort of building complex of steel metal casework and shining glass windows. It was an ultra-modern building and its most striking characteristic was a distinctive red sign shaped in the form of a dragon. The symbol registered in Electra's mind. She knew about the Red Dragons of course from her years serving the military but only vaguely. They were a gang who specialized in underworld tactics -- like the Mafia in old United States. So this is where Spike used to work and this man sitting behind me was his partner. Vicious. His best friend. The man who wished to kill him. And suddenly, Electra was stunned as an idea came to her.
Of course! And that was why he seemed disappointed that it was I who delivered the goods and not Spike. It was a trap all along. He used Planchet to lure Spike into a trap but it was I who step into it instead. But why keep me captive, then? He doesn't have any use for me. Electra made a turn and then glanced at the rearview mirror once more. She wasn't surprised to find the too-alert pale eyes staring back at her.
That smile again.
"Curious is the one who is only discovering. It is man's only real flaw and his one true gift," Vicious said.
"Strange is the one who finds joy in riddle-speak. No one understands yet he persists," Electra returned, mocking his propensity to speaking in vague lines.
This drew a chuckle from the man sitting behind her. Then he said, "You have questions. I can see it. Your eyes are like pools with which one can look into and see your thoughts spread out."
Despite herself, Electra felt the tips of ears burn. With what? She wasn't sure. All she knew was that the man was infuriating.
Vicious closed his eyes once more and said, "Ask your questions, Ms. Ovilo. I will deny you nothing."
