“Okay so you’ve only known them for a few months but Shigure, Hatori, Ayame, and Akito have known them for years?”
“Yes.”
“And you’ve come here at lest once a month since your first visit?”
“Yes.”
“And they haven’t been cursed as long as we have so they still have more stories then just the basic ‘animals go to party’ story?”
“That’s right.”
“Okay. I accept that.” Haru said as they reached the front gate. Onwa sat outside reading the news paper and smoking, just like the first time Yuki had come.
“I’m almost done.” He said from behind the paper.
“I have to ask, why do you sit out here?” Yuki inquired.
“I don’t want to smoke around Houseki.” Onwa folded that paper along it’s already present creases.
“Onwa Wutase, this is my cousin, Hatsuharu Sohma.” Yuki gestured to the taller teen.
“It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Haru bowed.
“So polite. It’s nice to meet you too.” Onwa bowed slightly. “Have you met my cousin Riho? She owns a Chocolate store near Ayame’s shop. I don’t get to go all that often.”
“No. Today is the first I even heard of you.” said Haru.
“She’s the ox of our family.”
“Oh, I see.” Nodded the ox. Onwa opened the gate and Haru had the same reaction to all the happy people outside that Yuki did the first time.
“Big brother Yuki!” Houseki shouted with happiness and ran to him. The younger rat got down on one knee and took the girl into a big hug, smiling and laughing a little.
“Good afternoon, Monkey, how are you today?” Yuki stood but still held the girl’s hand.
“I’m good. I had my birthday so I’m five now.” She held up her fingers so he could see.
“I’ll have to bring you a gift next time I come.”
Houseki smiled. “I would like that. Thank you so much!” she smiled.
“Oh, this is my cousin, Hatsuaharu Sohma.”
“It’s nice to meet you,” Haru smiled at the little girl.
“It’s nice to meet you to. I’m Houseki Wutase, the head of the Wutase family.” The girl bowed. She turned back to the younger rat, “Big brother Yuki, come here I have something to show you.” She tugged him toward the pond. “Look at all the baby fishies!”
“Those are Koi fish.” Yari said. She’d been feeding, or attempting to, a squirming baby.
“Do you like the baby Koi fish, Houseki?” Hongo asked.
“Yup, but I like all the zodiac people more.” She smiled.
“If she’s head of house, why do they call her ‘Monkey’?” Haru asked Onwa.
“Because when she pulls on her ears and puffs her checks out she looks like a monkey.” Onwa smiled when Yuki knelt down next to the little girl and told you her something that he could only imagine had to do with the fish because of where he was pointing.
“I noticed the bruises on Yuki’s check and neck. What happened?” the older rat looked at Haru. The teen was as tall as him so eye contact was easy.
“He had a talk with Aki… the head of our family and I guess he got mad.”
“Hmm, Akito still has the temper of a child I see.” Haru nodded. The baby in the basket started to cry. The ear piercing sound caught everyone’s attention.
“Oukan, shh.” Houseki said to the baby.
“Monkey, I don’t think that’s going to help.” Yari said taking the baby into her arms. Yuki walked back to Onwa and his cousin with Monkey in tow.
“I did have something to discuss with you. Perhaps we should go in side now.” The rat said.
“I think your right. Houseki are you staying out here or going back inside?” Onwa looked at the girl. She seemed to think about the question for a bit.
“I’ll stay out here. Auntie Yari might need my help. Baby boars make a lot of noise.” The men said their good byes and headed into Onwa’s house.
“So to what do I owe the pleasure of this visit?” Onwa put a kettle of tea on.
“I wanted to know how long you’ve known Akito.” Yuki sat at Onwa’s little low table. The man sat in front of the teens with a heavy sigh.
“Maybe five years or so. I can see that the self proclaimed demi-god had a conversation with you recently. I hadn’t ever really liked him.”
Yuki touched his neck. “Akito has ordered me to stay at the main house again. I was too young to remember when he was young so I thought I would come to you. What was the former head of your family like as a child?”
“He was very somber, even as a child. I think Houseki is the first happy H. o. F in a while, if not ever. Shiro was completely deranged. I told you that me and my sister get a long now but we didn’t when we where young. The reason we are friends is because Shiro tried to kill her.”
“What happened?” Haru asked, completely stunned.
“My sister, Kadan, the cat, was Shiro’s favorite, like Yuki was and probably still is Akito’s favorite. He would keep her locked in a room until he was ready for his toy. That’s why she was so mad at me. If we weren’t cursed then he would have no reason to single any of us out. I’m not really sure what happened while she was in his tender care. But one day in the middle of winter he went completely crazy. I’d been out with Sachi and Hongo all day and when I came home, Yari ran of to find me.” Onwa looked at the tea cup in his hands. “Kadan had been left out in the snow, bruised, bloodied and completely naked. She was close to death, I still remember checking to make sure none of the vertebra in her neck was broken, picking her up and carrying inside. Shiro got mad at me, saying that he wanted her to die, to be an example. He was irate. Hongo talked him down, but until Shiro’s death, I had to protected my sister and before I knew it, I’d come to respect her.”
“How could you remove the curse?” Haru asked. He had a bad feeling about this.
“The rat has to make a sacrifice to his family.” The ox stole a glance at his cousin. The teen was staring into his tea cup but not really seeing it. His eyes were looking somewhere far away. He knew, Haru realized with a start. Yuki already knew about this. They sat in silence, the three of them, deep in their own thoughts.
“How long has your sister and the others been living in our neck of the woods?” Yuki asked after about twenty minutes.
“A couple years. Not really long at all.” Onwa answered.
“Oh, I see.” Answered the younger rat. Haru had yet to rejoin the conversation. The rats spoke a little more, all of it small talk. Haru excused himself and went outside. Houseki was still playing outside Oukan had long since been taken inside so the girl was playing near the pond by herself. Haru sat on the steps of the Wutase rats’ house watching her. The little girl would pick up a stick and breaking it into perfect segments and lay them out in little geometrical shapes, all the while humming to herself. Houseki looked up at the ox and smiled. Haru smiled back. The girl walked over and sat down next to him.
“You look sad.” She said leaning back on her elbows.
“I’ve just got a lot on my mind.”
Houseki smiled at him with all the child- like innocence a five year old should possess. “It will all be okay.”
“I don’t know about that. After you get a little older, you’ll realize that things aren’t as easy as you’d want them to be.”
Houseki thought about that for a little bit. “But, if it’s not okay then it isn’t over yet. That’s what Yari said. Everything will be okay.”
For the first time since their conversation, Haru looked at the child sitting next to him. The girl looked right back at him. Her dark brown eyes held a youthful intelligence that he knew Akito never possessed. Houseki tilted her head to the side in thought, “You’re worried about big brother Yuki, aren’t you?”
Haru stated, “Um… yeah.”
“I noticed the way you were looking at him. It’s the way Hongo looks at Yari when she isn’t paying attention.”
“Haru, we should get going.” Yuki stood at the door. He smiled at Houseki.
“Good bye big brother.” The girl gave him a hug. “Come back and visit again soon”
“I will.” He replied. Everyone said their good byes and the two Sohma teens made their way to the train station.
“I think I know why you come here at least once a month.” Haru said when they boarded the train.
“They give me peace of mind and some things to think about.” Yuki sat in the seat. Nothing more was sat for the rest of the trip. It wasn’t needed.
