Hatori, Haru, Kisa and Hiro (because he seemed to be Velcroed to the tiger’s side) waited at the train station for Tohru and Nikkou. The announcement had come over the intercom, fuzzy and muffled, that the train arriving from Osaka was running late due to interference. The ‘interference’ they were talking about was a cow camped out on the tracks. ‘How ironic’ Tohru thought as they waited for the train to move again.
“I hope Sissy remembers me.” Kisa said clutching her hands in front of her chest.
“Of course she does.” Haru said leaning against one of the support beams with his Rayban sunglasses on.
Finally the train pulled in half an hour late. It’s occupants schlepped off single file except for Tohru who still was bright eyed as she looked for a familiar Sohma face. She spotted Hatori first then Haru. She and Nikkou made their way to them and Tohru finally saw Kisa and Hiro.
“Kisa! It’s been so long!” Tohru went to give the tiger a hug.
“Sissy!” Kisa squeezed the older women.
“Are you just going to ignore the rest of us?” Hiro asked.
“Hiro- san How have you been? I almost didn’t recognize you.” Tohru smiled at him. She asked the same of Hatori and Haru. Nikkou waited patiently for Tohru to finish with her catching up.
“This is my son Nikkou Honda” Tohru motioned to the boy, beaming at him.
“Come on… You know I hate it when you mushy in public.” The boy said taking his mother’s bag, slinging it over his shoulder.
Tohru smiled at him, giggling a little, “I can take my own bag.”
“I’ve got it.” Nikkou said following the doctor and the ox.
“The car’s this way.” Haru pointed to the parking lot.
“How old is Nikkou?” Kisa asked.
“He’s nine.” Tohru smiled. “He kind of sprang this vacation on me. But I’m so happy! I missed all of you. And I hear you’re engaged.” Kisa giggled and blushed. Hiro walked behind the two women watching them. Kisa showed the ring that the ram had picked out for her. It was defiantly a real diamond, a solitaire. The band was platinum, glittering on the tiger’s finger. “It’s beautiful!” Tohru breathed.
“Could we hurry please? These bags are heavy.” Nikkou asked. Tohru smiled and rushed to walk next to him.
“I could take my own bag.”
“I said it’s okay. You might trip and get hurt if you carry it.” Nikkou said.
“Thank you Nik- chan, you really are…”
“I told you not to get mushy!” Nikkou said, blushing a little.
“Sorry.” Tohru smiled again.
“Does he remind you of someone?” Haru asked, looking at Hiro.
“He does… but he really loves Sissy. He’s just looking out for her.” Kisa said taking Hiro’s hand.
Kisa and Toru talked almost the entire trip to Kyo’s house. Haru would join every once in a while and Hiro would intercede just to make a little quip. He mostly talked to… argued with Nikkou. Hatori just stayed quiet. He was just happy that Tohru hadn’t changed too much. She was more mature and if at all possible, more responsible. But that was to be expected.
The car rounded the corner that Tohru recognized and soon the Dojo was in sight. Her heart beat faster as she thought about seeing Kyo again and so soon.
“Sissy, are you okay?” Kisa squeezed the riceball’s hand.
“Oh, yes I’m fine. I’ve just been a little over worked lately… so now that I’m on vacation I don’t really now what to do with myself.” Tohru smiled.
Kisa leaned towards her ear. “Are you happy you’ll see Kyo- nii again?” she whispered. Tohru blushed. The tiger smiled knowingly at her. The car came to a stop outside the gate and not only did Tohru and Nikkou get out but so did Haru. Before the boy could pick up Tohru’s bag again, the ox swooped in and took it. Both men turned to the woman, taking note that her hand was out to take the ever popular suitcase. Haru smiled a little, Nikkou looked annoyed.
“Let’s get inside. We’re already late.” Tohru smiled. Kisa got out and gave her a hug saying that she would see the older woman later. Hiro’s send-off was a simple “later.” Haru had already walked off with Tohru’s bag. She and Nikkou followed quickly only to see the ox disappear into a house.
“Hatsuharu?” Tohru poked her head inside the door.
“I’m in here.” He called back. Tohru pulled off her shoes and stepped inside. The interior was very clean, mostly done in white with a few red and orange accents.
“Kyo’s at the Dojo. He told me to drop your things here and take you over there.”
“Is he teaching now?” Tohru asked happily. Haru nodded. Tohru smiled a little, remembering the time so long ago on the roof of Shigure’s house when Kyo had shown her how to throw a punch. Granted, she never needed to but it was still one of her treasured memories. Tohru had thought then that he would be a good teacher. She glanced at Nikkou who was staring at some pictures that were tacked to the wall. Tohru came over to get a better look. One was of just the Sohma boys, Haru with his arm around Yuki, Momiji sitting behind Kyo. One was of Tohru, the boys, Hana, Uo, Haru and Momiji. Another was of Yuki, Kyo and Tohru. Another was of just the girls and the last was of Kyo and Tohru. The woman looked closely, She hadn’t noticed at the time the picture had been taken but Kyo was paying more attention to her then the camera. She lightly touched it and one more picture fell from behind. Tohru gasped as she quickly bent to put it back. But the image stopped her. It was one just of her, which was odd because she would usually get a picture taken with at least one other person. The woman closed her eyes and thought for a moment. Suddenly the memory came flooding back to her.
”Get one just of Tohru!” Momiji said, taking the camera from Uo.
“Hey that’s a great idea.” The Yankee said.
“Oh, no… I…” Tohru blushed.
“You don’t want to be all red for the picture, do you?” Kyo asked sitting on the bench looking at her.
“But everyone’s starring at me…” The riceball blushed harder. “Hey, let me see that.” The cat said to Uotani who retrieved her camera. The Yankee had bought it the week pervious as a gift for herself for holding down two jobs and not going crazy.
“What color is it?” she asked with a smirk.
“Let me borrow it.” He clarified. The Yankee looked skeptical but handed it over anyway. Kyo held the camera in one hand and grabbed Tohru’s with the other. He dragged her away from the group behind some bushes.
“Now it’s only me.” Kyo held the camera to his face while Tohru was giggling and took the picture.
Tohru looked back at the picture in her hand. The edges were worn like it hand been held a lot, the image faded a little. One of the corners had a crease that looked as if it had been bent back then straightened. She looked at the others still on the wall. They all seemed to be in better condition.
“Let’s get to the Dojo. Kyo might be worried.” Tohru tucked the picture behind the others. Something about them made her happy. She reached for Nikkou’s hand and the boy almost took it but dropped his arm when he remembered Haru was still there.
Kyo was currently working one-on-one with a young boy who couldn’t have been more than six or seven. The child had a very serious expression on his face as he concentrated on hitting the cat Sensei’s hands dead center.
“That will be all for today, Kohaku, I’ll see you tomorrow.” Kyo bowed to the child. The child bowed back then smiled.
“Thank you, Sensei.” He said heading towards the front gate.
“I’ll go with him to make sure he stays out of trouble.” Haru said following the black-haired youth.
“He’s so cute!” Tohru said happily.
Kyo shrugged before asking, “How was your trip?”
Tohru opened her mouth but was silenced when Nikkou said, “Long.”
“It really wasn’t all that bad. We got stopped once because a cow was sitting on the tracks. But aside from that it went very smoothly.” The women smiled brightly. Kyo felt himself smile back. Her smile was just as infectious now as it was back then. Nikkou just looked from one adult to the other.
“Food.” He stated before walking back to Kyo’s house.
“Nik-chan!” Tohru called after him.
“No, don’t worry about it.” The cat said. He flushed as he remembered that the dream had haunted him again last night as it had several nights pervious.
“Are you finished for today?” Tohru asked looking at the time on her cell phone.
“Yeah, he was the last student for today.” Kyo answered reaching to take Tohru’s hand. They both blushed but neither made any move to pull away. They walked back to Kyo’s house in a contented silence just to find Nikkou was half done cooking dinner. And it smelled wonderful. Tohru hugged him from behind and mentioned he was a great son only to be kicked out of the kitchen. She smiled at him and left to sit in the dining room with Kyo where a pot of tea waited on the table. The cat had already poured himself and Tohru cups of tea. The third cup sat waiting for Nikkou to come out of the kitchen.
“I um… noticed you still had some pictures from high school.” Tohru said trying to make conversation.
“Yeah I put them up when I first moved in and they just stayed there.” Kyo said looking into the tea cup. The pictures. He must have starred at Tohru’s smiling face a hundred times before putting it with the others. It seemed best to hide the photo from himself. Tohru was smiling in all but one of the others anyway. The only difference was in the only taken only of her she seemed so carefree, truly laughing. A plate was placed in front of the cat and realized that the food was also on table. Tohru was in fact serving the rice.
“It’s nothing fancy.” Nikkou said taking a bite of his rice.
Tohru smiled at him, “But you worked hard to prepare it. We thank you for this food.” The boys clapped with her and they all began eating. Well, Tohru and Kyo began, Nikkou didn’t feel like waiting.
“So you’re going into fourth grade, is that right?” Kyo asked.
“Yeah” Nikkou said around in mouthful. He swallowed. “I don’t really like the fourth grade teacher. She’s really mean.”
“Giving you detention for drawing on the wall is not mean. It’s called discipline.” Tohru handed him a napkin. “Is Master still here? I would like to say hi to him while I’m here.”
“Yeah, he still lives in the same house.” Kyo pointed in its direction. Tohru smiled at the thought of her son being able to meet Kyo’s stepfather. He was practically Nikkou’s grandfather.
“Tohru, are you okay?” Kyo looked concerned.
“Yes, I’m fine I was just thinking.” She smiled at him while making a list of everyone she had to be sure to visit with. Dinner and the rest of the evening for that fact proceeded quietly. All too soon Tohru was saying good night to Nikkou and Kyo. She changed for bed and kneeled on the futon. It had been years since she’d slept one, not since when she first moved in with Shigure and Yuki. That thought carried her to sleep.
