Kikumaru Eiji walked home with tears running down his face. He hadn’t wanted to leave Tezuka that way, but the words Fuji Syusuke had said to him before the first strike from the tennis racket continued to run through his mind.
“There is nothing you can give him.” Fuji had said coldly, “You are too insignificant. He thinks you will make him happy, but you will never be able to make him happy. If you want Tezuka to be happy, let him go. I can make him happy.”
Eiji had been about to say something, but had been struck by the tennis racket before he had a chance to block it.
Now, as Eiji walked home he knew what Fuji had said was true. He couldn’t make Tezuka happy, no matter what happened, there was always going to be someone after Tezuka because of him. He had had no other choice but to let the captain go. He walked home, not looking up, too ashamed of himself to do anything but drag his feet. He knew that the look that Tezuka had given him as he left would be something he was never going to forget. He couldn’t imagine how he would be able to face school with Tezuka silently pleading with him. This thought made him even more miserable and he didn’t bother wiping the tears away as they rolled down his cheeks. Had he been looking up, he would have been able to avoid the head on collision with the Seigaku team’s regular freshman, Echizen Ryoma who was stopped looking at a sign.
“Kikumaru senpai.” Ryoma groaned, getting to his feet. Eiji looked at him like he didn’t know who he was. He seemed to bring himself out of it a little and hurriedly wiped his face.
“Echizen-chan, yo.” He said, trying to sound like himself. He was worried that Ryoma would notice something.
“Well bye then.” Ryoma said, walking away.
Eiji watched the younger boy walk away, unable to keep a small smile from creeping to his lips.
“Ochibi” He said to himself, shaking his head and continuing his walk home.
His encounter with Ryoma helped cheer him up enough that he thought he could get through his house and up to his room without crying. He got to his driveway and stopped, nervous. He knew his face looked horrible, with the bruised forehead and black eye, but it was now or never.
Echizen Ryoma was lost again. It seemed that no matter where he was going, if it wasn’t to school, to lunch with Momo senpai, or to the public tennis court, he was getting lost. He supposed he should pay more attention to his surroundings when he wandered around. He had been around here long enough that he should know something about his surroundings. This particular day, he had been looking for a shop that Oishi senpai had suggested to get new string for his racket. He walked down the seemingly endless street with his racket over his shoulder, looking for anything that might tell him where he was. He stopped to look at a street sign when he was ploughed over by some idiot. He looked up and saw that it was his redheaded senpai Kikumaru Eiji.
“Kikumaru senpai.” He said, he looked at the redhead, noticing that something was bothering him. The smile returned to Eiji’s face. It was obviously forced there.
“Echizen-chan, yo.” Eiji said.
Ryoma was not getting involved. He still had to find the string shop. He did not have time for this.
“Well, bye then.” He said casually, walking past Eiji and continuing down the street. He wondered what was wrong with the senpai. If he knew anything about Kikumaru Eiji, it was that he was almost always to be seen with a smile on his face, and the Eiji he had just seen had looked ghosted. He had also most definitely been crying. Ryoma pushed it from his mind. He really did not have time for this. As if to remind him that there was no time, a horn honked from the street, bringing him back to the present. He looked up, annoyed.
“Where the hell is this place at?” He said to himself.
“Which place is that Echizen?” He heard from behind him. He turned and saw Fuji Syusuke standing under an awning. Ryoma liked Fuji, but at times the prodigy could be just a little bit creepy.
“Oh, hello Senpai.” He said, wondering what the chances were that Fuji would have turned up now. “I am looking for Yuzumaki’s String Shop. Do you know where it is?”
“Two blocks down, and turn right, a block down on the opposite side of the street.”
The older one looked down at Ryoma, the usual off the court smile on his face. Ryoma had seen first hand what that face was like on the court, and it made the smiling mask seem even creepier.
“Thank you Senpai.” He said, turning to walk in the direction Fuji had pointed.
“You should really carry a map Echizen.” Fuji said, with a little wave of his hand.
Ryoma turned to look back. Fuji’s face looked as gentle as ever, and the Senpai winked. Ryoma blinked and started walking. As he walked, he again thought of Fuji. He always seemed to pop up in the most unlikely places. Ryoma was always seeing him around. More than even Momo senpai who lived way closer. He shook his head, clearing his mind. He wasn’t going to think of his upperclassmen anymore, this was his day away from them after all. He didn’t have time for that.
Eiji’s mother had nearly dropped the bowls from her hands when she caught site of her son’s face. Eiji explained that during practice, a racket had slid from his opponent’s hand and hit him. That seemed to satisfy his mother a little, so she didn’t push the matter, but he received stares from her all night. After dinner, he walked up to his room. He was grateful there was no school again tomorrow. He planned to lock himself in his room all day. He went into his bathroom and grabbed, instead of Saturday’s toothpaste, his favorite flavor to comfort him. As he brushed, he looked in the mirror. Shame filled him again as he looked at the marks. He was such a jerk for leaving Tezuka after he had protected him. Eiji knew that he would always love Tezuka, but he also knew that he would never go back with him. No matter what was said, no matter how much Tezuka pleaded and cried. Eiji would stand firm in his decision. Tezuka just didn’t realize how Eiji was saving him from a life of anguish. When he was done with his teeth, he climbed in the shower. The soap and water stung the wound on his forehead as he washed his hair. He turned the water off, dried off and walked back into his bedroom. Tears began to fall again as he saw the picture of the Seigaku team on his dresser. In the picture, Eiji had been standing between Oishi and Tezuka, his arms around his doubles partner. Looking at Tezuka, he could see that the captain had been looking at him. This made Eiji cry harder. ‘Why do things like this have to be so difficult?’ He asked himself miserably. He picked up the picture and lay it down again, this time with the picture facing down. He couldn’t stand to see his love’s face staring at him. He switched off his light and climbed into bed. Closing his eyes he let the tears flow freely again. He began to drift off, finally ending this retched day when there was a frenzied knock at his bedroom door. It flew open and his mother entered, her face pale.
“What is it?” He asked worried.
“I just got a call from Tezuka Kunimitsu’s mother. He was admitted to the hospital this evening, after he passed out during dinner.”
Eiji’s eyes widened and he let out a small sob.
“I am sure you want to go to the hospital? I will take you if you get dressed.” His mother said gently.
Eiji looked at her for a second, then he reached up and dried his eyes with his hand.
“No, I don’t want to go.”
