****Three Months Later****

“What do you think?” came the soft voice.

Sanada looked up and nodded. The pale green color looked excellent on him, though he thought Yukimura knew this when he picked the shirt.

“I like it.”

The youth nodded and headed back into the dressing room, shutting the door. Sanada looked back down at the papers he was looking at. He’d told Yukimura they were job applications and some of them were, but most were bills. Hospital bills, rehab bills, medicine bills. They’d moved recently as well, so Sanada could removed Yukimura totally from that old life, but now...another problem was rearing its head.

Money.

He didn’t mind. He could work two jobs, three jobs even, to pay all this debt off. His parents had gotten wind of what he was dealing with and told him he could come home to live at the dojo even, but he’d declined.

He’d live his life as it was.

With Yukimura.

They couldn’t afford a shopping spree, but Yukimura deserved it. Sanada thought it’d be better for him to have new clothes now that he could fill them out. Not only had Yukimura gained weight, he’d been successfully clean for a good while now and his happiness overshadowed any debt Sanada might owe.

Yukimura came out again in a red button up shirt. It was the color of blood and combined with the tight jeans the boy was wearing, Sanada had to remember to breathe.

“Like it?”

“Yeah...I do.”

The boy smiled, rubbing the back of his head. “Too bad, it’s really expensive. Why can’t we go shop where it’s a bit cheaper?”

“You said you wanted to come here.”

Yukimura blushed. “I know...but...it’s expensive.”

“Not if we buy everything. Do you really want that?” Sanada pointed to the shirt.

He nodded and Sanada got up. “Then we’ll get it...” He kissed the boy on the mouth and indicated he should go change into his normal clothes. Yukimura disappeared into the dressing room again and Sanada got out his wallet. He could probably charge it and get away with it for a little while until he had to pay.

Yukimura came out again with the shirt and the green one, looking sheepish until Sanada took them both. They headed to the counter and paid, leaving.

They went to the car, the other boy worrying as it took a few moments to start, and headed back home.

“...Genichirou?”

“Yes?”

“...Is it okay?”

“Hm?” Sanada looked at him briefly. “What?”

“...Money. Is it okay?”

The man nodded. “It’s fine. We’ll be fine.”

“Because I could get a job -.”

“You shouldn’t have to.”

Yukimura looked out of the window. “Well...I need something to do. I’m lonely.”

Sanada wanted to growl and instead his grip tightened on the steering wheel. “I’m sorry I have to work so much. It’s just so we can have better things.”

“...I don’t have anything to do.”

His grip tightened further and he looked at him. “Well, please deal with it. I don’t want to talk about this right now.”

Yukimura picked lint off his pants. “We need to talk about it. We need to.”

“Why? I think I’m doing a good job -.”

“You’re doing everything! Why can’t I do something? I’m capable of things!”

“Yes, I think we know that.”

“...What’s that supposed to mean?” he whimpered.

Sanada ran a hand through his hair, wishing he had his hat. “Look, it doesn’t mean anything. Let’s just go home.”

When they made it home, Yukimura disappeared into the bedroom, but that didn’t stop his cries from reaching Sanada’s ears. He cooked dinner and did his best to ignore them, but it wasn’t working.

Dinner was ready and he called out to tell the boy so but he didn’t show at the table. He went back to the room and found it locked so he had dinner by himself, saved Yukimura’s portion and staked out a place on the couch. He couldn’t understand why this was so important. What did Yukimura working have to do with anything?

****

His first job was negligible. He did what they told him too and it was easy. He was very good at sharpening swords even if he knew these would probably be bought by Gaijin collectors and not deserving warriors.

The second job was his passion. Not only did he love doing Kendo himself, teaching children was wonderful. Especially the passionate ones. They all had different reasons, the rare kid who wanted discipline, a few boys who wanted to impress parents or girls, the kids who were made to come. He loved them.

So when he drove home, he’d had to bang on the dash board a few times to get the damn thing going, he was in amazing spirits.

Sanada opened the door and called out cheerfully.

“Yukimura?” He went in and set some bags on the counter, heading to the bedroom. The door was open and he went in smiling.

“Seiichi, I -.” he stopped dead.

Yukimura sat on the edge of the bed, staring at the dresser. Set out in a neat line was a syringe, a heating implement and a small baggy. The youth looked up at him.

“Sanada...”

He snatched up the waste basket and went over to all of it and threw it in the trash. He looked at Yukimura, nothing but fury in his features.

“You...”

Yukimura just started crying, covering his face. “I’m lonely! What am I supposed to do huh?”

“DAMN IT!” he screamed, leaving the room and slamming the door.

Sanada left the building and got into the car, slamming the door. He drove and drove until he found a place to dump the trash and kept driving.

**

Yanagi was busy. He had to make rounds and have a meeting and a million other things, but right now, he had to listen.

“I don’t know what I’m doing wrong? Why isn’t it working? He was sitting there staring at it like it was the only thing he could do! This means that it’s my fault Renji! I left him alone and he got hooked on that shit!”

Yanagi gripped his shoulder. “That is bullshit and you know it. It isn’t your fault. It isn’t anyone’s fault. Look, if he’s lonely, spend more time with him!”

“How?!” Sanada looked at him. “I work two jobs and I’m about to get a third. Do you know how much debt we have? Do you? It must be nice to be a doctor, making all that money you’ll never have time to spend, but I’m just a normal guy!”

So that was it. Yanagi looked at him. “Then I’ll help you.”

“Oh yeah, that’s what I need...more charity..” He got up. “Look...sorry to even bother you okay...I just needed to get some things off my chest -.”

“It’s not charity Sanada. You’re right when you say I don’t need that money. I’m barely home. I could just...give you some.”

He shook his head. “Look...forget it. I’ll think about it, but really, you can forget it. Tell Jackal I said -.”

Yanagi smiled. “We’re not together anymore.”

“What?”

“Tennis all the time and on call all the time leaves little time for well...anything.” He shrugged. “Bunta’s a lot better equipped to handle it all anyway I guess...I think they’re in Europe now.”

Sanada nodded, taking Yanagi’s arm and hugging him. “Sorry.”

“I’m a little too busy to care you know? But if you need anything, you let me know.”

They looked at each other and Sanada got an idea. “Yeah...I do need something.”

“Hm?”

**

Yukimura watched the window. The view in this place wasn’t much, but he could see the complex parking lot and a little of the neighborhood and the sun came in real nice sometimes.

Sanada wasn’t home yet. It was nearly eight.

He wiped his eyes again and crossed his arms. He hadn’t meant to. Really. He wanted Sanada to know that.

The front door opened and he rushed out of the room to see Sanada dragging a black cage behind him.

“...Gen?”

He looked up and smiled. “Come hold this for a second.”

“Huh?” he went over and held out his arms, receiving a black puppy. It licked his face immediately and Yukimura laughed suddenly, shocked.

“Genichirou?”

The cage was inside and Sanada put the food and other supplies on the kitchen table. “It’s a boy so name him appropriately.”

The puppy was squirming so Yukimura set him down, squatting and hugging his knees as the puppy sniffed around.

“He’s cute...”

“It’s an Akita.” Sanada put the cage in one corner of the living room and put in the bedding. The food and water bowls were already out and the man moved before the puppy could run out of the apartment.

Yukimura ran after him. “Tomo stop!”

He gathered the puppy in his arms and Sanada came over, ruffling the dog’s ears. “Tomo?”

Yukimura blushed. “Tomodachi...”

He nodded and Yukimura took the dog away to see the rest of the house.

Maybe he wouldn’t be so lonely anymore.

****One Year Later****

Sanada looked at his belt and down at Tomo who was wagging his tail like everything was alright.

“Seiichi!”

The youth came into the room, smiling when he saw the dog. “Tomo-chan!” he held out his hands and the dog ran to him.

Ignored, Sanada turned around. “Yukimura.” He pointed at his chewed belt. “Tomo needs to be trained.”

Yukimura was still coddling the dog, pinching its cheeks and kissing its nose.

Sanada saw that he wasn’t going to win so he just tossed the belt down and went to get a new one.

“Genichirou! Pick that up!”

He sighed. “Yeah yeah...” He picked it up and Yukimura left the room, Tomo at his heels.

After getting the dog a year ago, Yukimura’s whole personality and out look had improved dramatically. He’d let his lover get a part time job and found that with Tomo around, Yukimura half way didn’t want it because he didn’t want Tomo to get “Lonely”.

It was refreshing to be able to experience the person he’d fallen in love with in highschool again. He still worked two jobs, but everything didn’t seem as hectic as it was before as an “anonymous benefactor” was paying off his debts as well.

He’d have to tell Yanagi to quit it again when they got together next week.

He finished dressing and went out to the living room, Yukimura fussing over the food Tomo didn’t eat.

“You have to eat this. I have to leave Tomo.”

The dog just wagged his tail and Sanada rolled his eyes. “Let’s go. He’ll eat it later...”

Yukimura nodded, coming after him, looking over his shoulder. “Okay...”

They left the house and Sanada drove Yukimura to work first, asking him to have a good day at the library and left to his first job.

Even as he stopped, dreading the sale of good Katana to Gaijin collectors, he figured it would be all right. Even the foreigners loved their swords. And if you loved something enough, it would always be alright.

Of course he learned that love didn’t guarantee an easy path. It took work, it took time, it took patience. It took admitting when there was a problem and when things were wrong.

He’d learned this through Yukimura and his addiction.

He’d learned it through his own.

And he loved that too.
