Chapter 6
Though it had been a fairly short trip, Wally had fallen asleep on the ride to Goldenrod. Nimh let him have his rest, and gently shook him awake when they finally arrived.
“Mm... How long was I asleep?” the boy asked, rubbing his eyes.
“About half an hour maybe. I figured I’d just go ahead and let you sleep since there wasn’t much else to do anyway.” He smiled as the younger trainer’s green eyes finally focused.
“This is Goldenrod City? It’s amazing...”
Nimh grinned. “Beautiful, isn’t it?
“It’s very yellow.” The Champion stated, squinting against the sunlight reflecting off the buildings. Nimh laughed.
“Yeah, it takes a little getting used to. It’s a nice place though. Here.” He pulled a pair of sunglasses from the front pouch of his bag, and handed them to Wally. “These should help. I’m used to bright sunlight so I don’t really need them anymore.”
Wally gratefully slipped the glasses on and took another look around. Now that the glare wasn’t making his eyes water, he wanted to get a better look at the city. “Where should we go first?”
Nimh thought for a minute. “Well there’s nothing I really need, so I guess we can head to the park.” He hefted his bag back onto his shoulders and headed north out of the city, Wally tagging along behind him. “Let’s see... It’s Saturday right? I think they’re holding bug-catching contests all day.”
Wally made a face. “Bugs?”
The older trainer grinned. “Don’t like bugs?”
“They kinda creep me out...”
Nimh nodded. “Don’t worry, we don’t have to participate. Just make sure to stay out of the grass. Now stay close, I have a base around here, so we can drop our stuff off there then look around a bit.”
Wally nodded and followed Nimh into the park, occasionally glancing away from his back to watch the other trainers hunting down bug Pokémon in the grass. One cheered as he caught a Scyther and ran back inside one of the buildings to wait out the rest of the contest. The boy made a face then hopped over the fence after his friend.
They walked through the trees for a few minutes with nothing to look forward to but more trees, when Nimh suddenly stopped in front of a large maple with vines hanging down. “Up here.” He said, and climbed up with ease. Wally needed a bit of help getting up, not as used to the work as Nimh was.
The secret base looked pretty cozy. Nimh had covered the hard wood floor with some soft rugs, and sitting in a corner was a cushiony chair. There was also a comfort desk and matching chair against one wall, with Nimh’s laptop and a Torchic doll sitting on top. Wally smiled.
“I like it here.”
