Chapter 6: Back to the Vatican
As the group crept out of the lab, they were greeted with the first struggling rays of sunlight. Alex felt a sudden wash of relief seeing the light. Alex stared at the beautiful shades of rose and purple, thinking quietly how much it resembled the tones of a fresh bruise. As they left Alex pulled the gates shut and threaded the chain through the chainlink as nicely as possible. It was only a few hours until her boss, a government overseer, was due at this site to monitor her progress in the dig. As she rose to leave she took one last look at the place where her lifelong goal had finally been achieved.
“So, are you going to tell us why those notes are so important, or do we have to guess?” Leon’s curiosity broke the tense silence.
“Well, I need to finish reading them to make sure I understand them completely before I tell anyone anything. I just need a few days back at my hotel room to analyze her data and then I should be able to tell you the full story.”
“Negative. Returning to your hotel poses too great a risk to your safety. It is recommended that you return to the Vatican where you can be monitored.”
“I agree with Tres, you aren’t safe alone, especially since none of us know exactly how important this information is. We know that Cain aims to capture you and that means you are not safe alone.”Abel’s look was stern and left no room for argument. Alex chuckled at his attempt to be hard on her.
“That’s nonsense. I will be fine on my own. When I’m finished I will come to the Vatican and ask for the exterminators.”
“Alexandra, this is no joke. The Rosen Cruez Orden has destroyed an entire city just to enrage me.” Abel had her by the shoulders and she could feel his anxiety as he held her at arm’s length.
“Oh come on--”
“Do you remember Barcelona? One of Cain’s lackeys did that with a weapon he called the Silent Noise. Isaac Fernand von Kämpfer killed thousands while smiling at my despair. I will not let him get a hold of information that will allow him to create another weapon as deadly as the Silent Noise, and more importantly, I will not let him take you.” Alex blushed at his words
“All right. Then where to?”
“Come to the Vatican with us. We can protect you there and when you are done with the notes we can get you an audience with Lady Catherina.” Alex sighed, loathing the thought of haunting the Vatican for the next few days, but the pleading in his eyes won her over.
“Lead the way.”
Abel took her hand, making her blush furiously and Esther pout childishly. William, Hugue, Vaclav, and Leon exchanged scandalized glances. Tres noticed the mood shift among his companions, but struggled to comprehend what had caused said shift. It wasn’t long before they reached the Vatican, just in time for morning prayers. Alex marveled at the mind boggling scale of the buildings as the others rushed to various destinations within the main building. Esther showed her to the women’s dormitories before rushing off to make morning prayers. Esther promised to retrieve her when prayers were over, but Alex had her doubts. Since her first meeting with Esther she had felt jealousy and anger flowing from her every action like a noxious gas. So, Alex decided to wait until she heard other sisters returning to see if Esther returned as promised. If she didn’t, Alex was prepared to explore on her own. Besides, Esther would probably be searching for Abel and forget all about her stuck here in an empty dorm room. Which was fine with Alex because it wasn’t like she was interested in Abel or anything.
Alex waited patiently, pacing the empty room she had been left in. Soon enough she heard sisters entering the dormitory and gave Esther another ten minutes. When the rest of the dorm quieted and Esther failed to return, Alex gathered her shoulder bag and clutched the notebook at her side, slipping out of the dorms. She walked down corridor after corridor, looking for a quiet room or a library. Then the thought occurred to her: how many bibles does it take to fill a library? Would they even have a library here? She sighed mentally as she garnered more scandalized stares on accord of her attire. Could no one get past leather? Was there a quote against black leather in the bible?
Her angry questioning was suddenly halted as she came across a sort of study hall. There were priests and sisters at long tables, hunched over various old dusty looking volumes. She entered and took a seat in the back corner, as far away from everyone as she could get. No one paid her direct attention though she could feel eyes scalding her from every direction. She cracked the notebook from page one and began reading, immediately lost completely to the world around her as she read. It seemed like only moments later when her consciousness buzzed with annoyance. Her inner monologue began reading in French. One thought halted the lingual pile-up : what the hell?
“Mademoiselle?” Hugue gently laid a hand on her shoulder, his voice the softest whisper.
“Hugue. I’m sorry, were you calling me? I was reading...” Alex quickly realized that instead of responding verbally to Hugue’s soft calling she’d instead switched mentally to French as if he could hear her. Her mind wandered trying to remember when she’d slept last.
“Mademoiselle, we have been searching for you for almost two hours.”
“Two hours? Good heavens, has it been that long? I’d swear to you I was only here a few minutes.”
“Father Nightroad would like to have lunch made for you.”
“Father Nightroad?” Alex’s eyes ached from reading in a perpetual state of shock.
“Abel.”
“Ah. Well, I’m sure Esther has caught up to him, and I’m also quite sure she’ll be more than eager to eat with him.” Hugue smiled at her electric tone.
“If that were the case I would jump on the opportunity his lunacy would leave me and I would take you to lunch myself. However, I believe he has shrugged Esther off for now and he wishes to receive you.”
Yeah, I wouldn’t mind receiving him either.
Alex blushed brightly at her own thought. Hopefully God wasn’t listening always. She followed Hugue, tucking her arm in his as they walked. People started giving the two of them a wide berth. She didn’t mind it a bit now that she had a guide who belonged rightfully in the church. Their chatter wandered back into French and they began discussing the more famous works of art in Rome. Alex was so enjoying their conversation that she was almost sad to see that they’d arrived at their destination. Until she saw Father Nightroad’s bright smile. She briefly wondered if they would agree to share her if a second Armageddon was in sight. Hugue kissed the back of her hand, gracing her with a slight smile as he took his leave. Abel tried not to show his irritation.
“Alexandra, you gave us a bit of a fright.”
“Us? Doesn’t seem like I’m welcome by anyone but you.” Alex smiled sweetly at a rather tragic truth. En garde.
“Well, Hugue seems to welcome you quite warmly, something he never does.” Abel smiled at Alex. Touché.
“Yes, well not any more warmly than Esther would welcome you.” Alex ducked her head, cringing at the sound of her own blatant jealousy. Abel grinned at her comment.
“Welcome me where, Alex?”
“Dunno.” Alex scuffed at the floor with her boot. Abel took a step closer to her, letting his hand rest on her shoulder.
“Alex, if you’re uncomfortable here, you can go. I didn’t mean to start such a pointless conversation. We both have admirers and that’s our own business. I can tell you are hungry though, and I am starving as I skipped lunch to join the search for you. I’m not a great cook, but I can make some decent sandwiches. I was hoping you would join me.” Alex relaxed completely, looking at his gentle smile, framed as it was by impossibly smooth skin. She pulled the notebook to her chest, her arms crossed over the notebook and nuzzled into Abel’s shoulder. He wrapped his arms around her and inhaled her scent.
“A sandwich would be great, Abel, thank you. You are so sweet. Sorry I was so... bitchy about Esther.”
“All is forgiven Alex. So long as you don’t say anything to Hugue.” Alex laughed and pulled away slightly to gaze up into his face. Abel winked at her. Alex blushed and Abel laughed outright at her shyness. With that they sat down in the massive kitchen and began eating. Alex hadn’t even realized how famished she’d been until food was stuck directly under her nose. The two lingered over their food, flirting and chatting. It was early evening when Tres came in for another “status report” and Alex reluctantly excused herself to return to the library. Tres accompanied her at the request of Abel and she began pouring over the notebook again, Tres ever vigilant at her side.
