AN: I gave up on the song chapter. xD
He was going to tell her the day after today.
Hikaru had made that decision when he’d woken up that morning. Haruhi was pressed close to him, though he didn’t remember how she got there. And than, he remembered - she had gotten scared and he took her…and he’d kissed her on the forehead.
He was almost giddy with happiness - too bad he couldn’t remember the taste of her skin or the sensation of her against his lips.
He couldn’t move without waking her up, so he hastily woke her and together they made breakfast (eggs and bagels), had a race back to the room (he won), and than played LIFE (she won - he spent all his money adopting children so he could fill up the other cars, and had unfortunately landed on ‘College - Pay $50,000 per child’ space).
Than, she had said to him: “Hikaru, you seem happier today!”
“What do you mean?” He laughed.
“Yesterday you were sort of distant.”
“Was I? Sorry!”
She laughed - a sound like a shooting star, he noticed. It didn’t come that often, but it was beautiful when it did. “It’s fine!” She giggled again.
He was going to tell her right than, than found his face flushed and his tongue tied in a knot.
“A-are you feeling better today?” He asked, wanting to change the topic to something else.
She nodded. “Yep! I didn’t get you sick, did I?”
Hikaru laughed. “Hah, no. I’m fine!”
“My hair’s growing.”
“It does look longer!”
“I have to cut it.”
Hikaru blinked. “Why? It looks cute.”
Haruhi bit her upper lip and rubbed her hands together. “If it grows too long, people will be able to tell I’m a girl.”
“Oh.” Hikaru was surprised - he never thought she cared that much about staying in the host club. She always seemed exhausted whenever she left, and it couldn’t have been helping her grades.
“Hey, Hikaru?”
He looked up at her. “What?”
“Do you think…if I’d never joined the host club, do you think we’d have been friends?” She blushed slightly and waited for an answer.
His eyes widened in surprise. “Why?”
“Just tell me.”
He couldn’t give the answer quickly - would he have even noticed her? He and Kaoru probably wouldn’t have - she’d still have been wearing her glasses, her hair would still be unruly, and she’d still be wearing those sweaters that did not compliment her body at all.
“Umm,” He started. He didn’t want to tell her ‘No, we’d have probably thought you were a weird, nerdy girl,’ so that was all he said.
“You wouldn’t have, would you?”
Hikaru swallowed nervously. “Probably not.”
Haruhi flashed him one of those smiles (his face flushed slightly and his insides did flips). “Than I’m glad I joined!” She laughed.
Hikaru blushed more - what did that mean? That comment…she was glad? Wasn’t that subtle flirting or something? He smiled. “I’m glad you joined, too.”
“Hikaru?”
“Hmm?”
“You’re face is super red. Do you have a fever?” She leaned over, one hand dangerously close to his open legs, the other pressed against his forehead.
“You’re hot.”
He blushed again - he knew she didn’t mea it that way, but still…”I’m fine, really.”
“Are you blushing, then?”
“No!”
Haruhi smiled and sat back down. “Okay,” She said quietly. “Got it.”
He groaned quietly - did she think he didn’t like her now? Oy, this girl! Giving him mixed signals like this…he wouldn’t be able to take much more of her confusing comments.
The storm was still raging, so from time to time he comforted her - telling her it was okay, he was there - and hugging her. Much as he enjoyed it, he wished the contact was for something other than comfort.
Doing nothing important made the day pass by quickly. Before they knew it, it was twelve and they were both tired.
“Night, Haruhi,” He told her, holding up the sheets of the bed so she could get under.
“Night, Hikaru,” She sighed back, closing her eyes. He turned the light off and soon joined her.

Today, today, today. He woke up, those words ringing in his head quietly. Today’s the day, today, today!
She was up - she had just come in from the bathroom. “Ah, morning Hikaru.” She greeted him happily. He smiled and raised his hand in answer.
I love her.
Than tell her.
I can’t.
He cleared his throat, found his face flush nervously, his mouth become dry again.
“H-Haruhi?”
She looked up from searching in her duffel bag. “Yes?”
He patted the space next to him on the bed, and she sat down.
“Um,” He started nervously, his eyes fixed on the sleeve of her shirt. “I think there’s something I should tell you.”
“What is it?” She asked quietly.
He looked up and his amber eyes met her brown orbs.
“Um, Haruhi,” He began again, even more nervously than before. His palms were beginning to sweat, but he grabbed her hands.
“Hikaru, what’s wrong?”
His brows furrowed slightly, but he took a deep breath and began: “Haruhi, I…I…”
Her hands gripped his harder, reassuringly. “What is it?” She asked.
“Um, I’m hungry.”
She laughed and unlaced her hands from his, leaving them cold without the warmth of her palm. “That’s all? You had me really worried for a second!” She stood up. “What do you want to eat, than?”
Coward, his mind roared at him, coward, coward!
I know, he told it. I know, I know.
He looked up at her, trying his hardest to keep his face steady. “Um, ah…” He scratched his head, his shoulders lifting slightly in a shrug. “I don’t know.”
Haruhi placed a hand on her chin and sat down again. Hikaru watched as her eyes became far and distant, as they always did when she was deep in thought.
“Hikaru?” She asked slowly, as though her voice were just coming out of a long tunnel. He looked up, than realized she was still sort of spaced out. “Yeah?” He answered. Her eyes instantly brightened and she turned towards him again.
“How about donburi?” She smiled. “It’s kind of cold out, and it’s already lunchtime, anyways. How about it?”
Hikaru laughed. “Donburi? That’s fine.”
She stood up and headed for the door, pausing to wait for him, her hand on the doorknob. He stood up and followed her to the kitchen.
The rain was getting harder - you could hear every drop pummel the roof, and it was quite loud.
“Donburi…” Hikaru muttered, picking up a pair of chopsticks and clicking them together. “Donburi, donburi. How do you make that?”
Haruhi took the chopsticks from him and smacked him lightly on the head, than picked up a roll of sushi from the counter behind her. “Here, try this.” She prodded the chopsticks at his mouth, leaving him no choice but to open his mouth.
She popped the sushi in. Hikaru chewed it, chewed it…than swallowed. “Well?” She asked earnestly. Hikaru looked up, a bit surprised. “It’s good.”
Haruhi laughed happily. “It’s my own creation! I mixed a bit of wasabi into the fish, than added soy.” She scratched her head. “Actually, it doesn’t sound so original anymore…”
Hikaru laughed, than stood up. “So, what do we need for donburi?”
“What kind do you want?”
“Hmm…” Hikaru thought about this for a minute before answering, “Oyakodon.”
Haruhi nodded. “Got it.” She turned around, grabbed some ingredients from the cabinets, and started. Hikaru watched her, dumbfounded.
“You don’t want me to help you?” He asked, not wanting to be of no help for his meal. Haruhi only smiled at him and turned back to cutting up the chicken. “It’s fine!”
Hikaru scratched his head, troubled. “Isn’t there anything I can do?”
“Do you want soba?”
“I guess so.”
“Can you make some?”
Hikaru beamed, than nodded. “Sure!”
So together, they began making their lunch, Haruhi patiently and calmly cutting the ingredients while Hikaru, so eager to help, cut the noodles too hastily. “Hikaru,” Haruhi said gently, putting her hand over his to stop him cutting. “Not like that.”
She took his hand and guided it in cutting a couple noodles. Hikaru desperately wished as she smiled at him and went back to her own work that she hadn’t noticed the blush creeping over his face as her light touch met his hands.
Finally, the work was finished and they were able to enjoy their own cooked meal - though the soba noodles weren’t cut perfectly, Haruhi had cooked everything to perfection.
“Haruhi, you’re a very good cook,” Hikaru commented after he’d finished eating. Haruhi smiled, her cheeks slightly pink. “Thank you!”
“You’ve always had to cook for your dad, right?”
“Mm, not always. When I was nine I started cooking.”
“Was your dad not a very good cook then?”
Haruhi laughed. “He wasn’t terrible, but…”
Hikaru flashed her an impish grin, and she burst out laughing.
“H-Hikaru!” She choked between giggles, “You look like an angry cat when you do that!” She burst out laughing again, her face red and her eyes teary. Hikaru looked up questioningly. An angry cat? What did that mean?
“Is…is that bad?” He asked, his voice quiet in surprise. She instantly stopped laughing and looked up guiltily, as though she’d said the wrong thing. “Oh, no, of course not! It just reminded me of a cat with your lips like that.” She fanned herself with her hand, her mouth a small ‘o’ as she breathed in and out slowly.
He smiled again. “Do you like cats, Haruhi?”
She looked up. “Huh?”
“Cats, nekos, whatever you want to call them.”
“Ah, I do.” She looked up again at him, her eyes closed as she smiled happily.
He smiled - although she hardly ever let out her personality other than that bland, normal one that most often showed across her face, she did have an alter-ego, so to speak, that hardly ever reared its head - a slightly more adventurous and funny side.
“Have you ever had one?”
“When I was around five, yeah. His name was just Neko-kun. We found him in the alley behind our apartments, but he ran away after we had him for a year.” She laughed suddenly, covering her mouth with her hand. “Neko-kun? Wow, I’d almost forgotten about that. Was I really that unimaginative?” Her finger trailed to her lips and she looked at him in answer.
“Were you really, I wonder?” He asked. She giggled, leaving him to blush.
It was still raining pretty hard as they walked back to the room, and Hikaru was walking so fast Haruhi had trouble keeping up with him.
“Hikaru?” She breathed, her feet pounding, “What’s wrong? You’ve seemed nervous this whole morning.”
Instead of responding, he just flashed her a smile from over his shoulder. Much as he tried to mask it, Haruhi could tell he was still worried.
Back in the room, they decided to play Scrabble.
“Ah, look, Haruhi! Look what word I can make!!” He pointed to his letters, which were aligned in a row to spell --
“ ‘Penis?’ Is that really funny?” Haruhi asked, looking up from the letter tiles to Hikaru, whose face was red and crunched up in a attempt to stop himself from laughing too hard.
“Duh, it is! It’s a ‘dirty’ word, Haruhi. Don’t you know anything about this subject?” He regretted saying this as soon as the words left his mouth - Haruhi was the last person he wanted t talk about sex with, not with the way he’d been imagining her lately.
“Of course I know!” She muttered nervously, her face red. Hikaru blushed - she looked so cute like that! She looked up angrily and puffed out her bottom lip in an unintentional pout. “I-I took sex-ed!”
He was about to laugh and say something funny to cheer her up again, and then he remembered the promise he’d made that morning.
He had to tell her today.
He’d tell her right now.
