Epilogue
************************************************************************
Later that morning, Miaka watched Tamahome and Tasuki out of
the corner of her eye as they secured supplies to their donated horses. She knew that Tamahome had gone to find
Tasuki after he left her last night, but this wasn’t what she was expecting.
They were already looking much better than they had
yesterday. The shadows under their eyes
were gone, and they were back to laughing and talking with everyone. Most of all, they were relaxed, and nothing
seemed to really bother either one of them.
They looked… happy.
But they weren’t holding hands, kissing, or touching each
other, or doing any of the stuff a person was supposed to do with their
boyfriend. They weren’t even being
nicer to each other; they bickered and argued as usual. Just this morning, they got into a
fist-fight over the last sausage (which Nuriko promptly stole while they
weren’t paying attention).
It was… odd.
Miaka began to think that maybe she had been right all
along. That wasn’t how Tamahome had
acted with her when he was in love with her, and she knew for a fact that
was real. So maybe he wasn’t really in
love with Tasuki.
Just then, she saw Tamahome smile mischievously. He looked around for a moment as if checking
to make sure no one else was around before looking back at Tasuki. A look of concentration crossed his
features.
The bandit’s eyes widened and he looked up, unerringly
finding Tamahome. They just looked at
each other for a moment before breaking into twin smiles, just beaming at each
other.
They positively glowed for a moment. She wondered if anyone else could see
it. Then, as quickly as it had
happened, the brilliance faded back down to normal, and the men went back to
their tasks, smiling to themselves.
Miaka quickly looked away, feeling like an intruder. Part of her wanted to run over and shake
Tamahome until things were back to the way they were. For a while there, she had been so much more than a mediocre
junior-high student. She had been
living every girls’ dream: a handsome, caring, romantic boyfriend who wanted
nothing but to protect her, and was strong enough to do it. It was what all girls wanted, wasn’t it?
Now she just felt awkward and generally depressed.
Just then, Nuriko called to her; it was time to say their
goodbyes and go. For the first time,
she wondered if this was how Hotohori felt whenever he saw her with Tamahome,
or even how Nuriko felt whenever Hotohori lavished affection on her.
She had been so wrapped up in Tamahome, Tamahome, and
nothing but Tamahome that she had hurt a lot of people and neglected even
more. It was a sobering thought. She resolved to start thinking more about
other people’s feelings, starting with her seven warriors and including all the
people of Konan that they had to save.
As bad as it hurt, she had to let him go.
She chose to ride with Nuriko on the way to Touran. “Say, Nuriko, can you tell me about the people
where you grew up?”
Nuriko smiled, correctly guessing the reason behind her
question. ‘Looks like she’s done a
little growing up.’ “I’d love to!”
************
I certainly don’t think that the romantic boyfriend thing is
every girl’s dream, but I do think that Miaka believes that. Oh, and sorry for the crappy fight scene,
I’m not too good at those, but I’m working on it.
::Grumble:: Dang it,
I’m not happy with it ending like this.
A little mystery is great, but loose ends get on my nerves, and there
are too many here for my comfort. Looks
like this’ll have to be a trilogy, folks.
-_-;;
Thanx much for stickin’ with me, and hopefully I’ll see ya
next time!
