6. It Crushes his Voice
A barely warm cup with the lid loosely dangling over the top was
shoved into his unprepared hands causing the dark liquid to spill
lightly over the side. Matsuda frowned while quickly snapping the lid
into place mumbling something about napkins. “…Thanks.”
Tipping the messy cup her way he nodded and the girl behind the
counter smiled, her whole face lighting up as if no one had ever
given her a simple thank-you. “No problem sir, you have a nice
day now.” Nice day, yeah right. He grabbed a few packets
of sugar and muttered a practically inarticulate, “You too.”
His usual bubbly happiness overtaken by lack of coffee creamer,
napkins, sleep, clues, answers, and solid evidence.
It all started after he parted ways with Agent Eronel, his mood
slowly began to deteriorate. The so-called solved Kira cases
sophisticated loopholes and other mysteries weren’t exactly a
piece of cake to reveal or uncover (if there were any). Eronel
insisted he investigate this Light being alive thing further but…
it was a dead end he knew it. Light was not among the living. It was
truly difficult to get anywhere, especially since he seemed to be
doing all the footwork alone. Matsuda was tired, but he couldn’t
sleep. Since he couldn’t sleep he found himself wandering the
streets at four am craving caffeine. Then there was the problem with
café’s and coffee shops that were open 24 hours and that
problem was; everything! One never knew if they were going to
be cramped inside of the wonderful aroma filled place with hung over
people, cops on duty trying to stock up, or some college kids burning
the late night oil.
College kids, those seemed to be the magic words to the
break down in his already broken thought process.
College kids… they crammed those coffee shops with their
books and laptops, their papers scattered everywhere as they studied
diligently. Light had once started out like that, he had once been a
simple kid… okay maybe he had never been a simple kid
but he used to be an innocent one, not a being besmirched by that
poisonous longing to rule the world and everyone in it. “How
could someone so bright go so astray?” He asked the coffee shop
door, it answered him with a quiet creak as he leaned into it more.
Yeah, he knew he’d desperately draped his mind from these
thoughts for far too long. It wasn’t healthy to study the
what-ifs, the had-beens, and the never was. It was terribly difficult
for him not to and just as hard for him to simply let go. What burned
the most was he trusted Light, L had trusted Light, Light’s own
Father trusted him and they all had been deceived by the bright-eyed
intelligent well-spoken young man. They had been betrayed, his
friends and co-workers died because a madman believed he was God. A
kid he once thought would make a superb detective made a better or
rather worse psycho. Matsuda felt like a failure and he badly needed
to right the wrongs that had been committed. He owed that much to L,
one for saving his life, and two for not believing the detective when
he insisted Light was Kira.
Though, he supposed most of it didn’t matter now and yes no
matter what Agent Eronel had eluded too Light was gone, he saw
that with his own eyes and eyes did not lie. One thing
was for sure Matsuda was very grateful L had stopped him from
shooting the teen even though he honestly wanted to and felt
justified in the action to do so. Sadly these thoughts were not only
bringing him down but they were deeply consuming, obviously they were
thoughts best kept for when he was alone, which he was not, as he
noticed he was still blocking the exit to the quaint little shop.
Matsuda rubbed his eyes with one hand feeling more than a little
perturbed as he stepped out of the foreign coffee shop that he was
’forced’ to go to. His usual one was insanely over
crowded and a spastic caffeine hyped employee kept shouting the shop
had run out of vanilla flavouring or something. Who knew, who cared
he had stopped listening after being in line for 30 minutes and it
hadn’t moved an inch. He took a swig of his new coffee and
almost spit it to the ground in disgust. “Ugh, yuck!” It
was very weak, he preferred his coffee strong. Matsuda needed it to
be strong he’d had a long day yesterday and was sure this one
promised to be just as long if not longer. The investigators
shoulders visibly slumped it was hard working on a case masked in
this much secrecy. It made him wonder if this was anything like how L
operated or felt. Thinking of the dark haired detective reminded him
he had to get in touch with L and discuss Agent Eronel or more so her
need for the Death Note. Matsuda stepped close to the edge of the
curb his thick rubber shoe soles curling over the hard concrete as he
steadied his stance nodding happily at some crazed passer-by who
dared to be up roaming the streets at four something in the morning.
“Eh,” he said to himself, maybe people felt safer with
the death of Kira and such, which sounded terribly ironic
considering. Regardless, that made him feel good, it was his job to
maintain safety on the streets. He tossed the coffee cup in the
nearest trash bin and reached for his cell phone flipping it open and
using speed dial to reach the detective.
The weird thing was he heard the phone ringing before it reached
his ear. Matsuda was pretty sure the sound wasn‘t coming from
the other end of his line either. “Huh…” Tota
Matsuda looked down at the small piece of technology noticing it was
not on speakerphone. He heard it ring again and automatically began
examining his surroundings finding nothing of interest except a huge
SUV parked in front of a hotel diagonal to him. Okay, maybe
that was something of interest.
“Yes?” questioned a monotone voice on the other end
but Matsuda could not find the words to answer as he was immediately
drawn to a figure by the SUV. His eyes widened comically as he
noticed standing there in front of the back door stood a hunched
creature with wild black hair that messily greeted hello to his tired
caffeine-less eyes. There was no mistaking that person, it was the
great and ever elusive detective. Matsuda could hardly believe his
eyes or his luck. The hotel L was in front of was currently
unrecognizable to any the Kira investigation team had spent time at
with the secretive detective, though that did not mean much. It
wasn’t like he had a print-out of the detectives hide-outs,
that wouldn’t make much sense. But…..what was the
detective doing, should Matsuda approach the eccentric man? Maybe
not, maybe he was working.
“Ryuuzaki, hey-” he started, finally gathering the
words to speak.
“What is it that you want?” Matsuda narrowed his eyes
staring at his phone for only a second as if that would help him
decipher what was wrong with the strange man. He seemed on edge and
as Matsuda crossed the street to see what was going on he halted.
Another seemingly taller person got out of the backseat but they were
well hidden by baggy clothes equipped with a hooded sweatshirt. Even
though Matsuda could not see the persons face he felt like he knew
them somehow and an unnerving sensation crawled it’s way over
his skin and resided there. Who is that ?
“You, um… you sound busy.” Gulping audibly he
drifted forward placing himself in the middle of the street and he
knew that would not do, he knew that would draw immediate attention
to him so he stepped back to the curb. There he kept his eyes not on
L but the other person who remained well hidden. Was L working
another case? Was he trying to help someone into hiding… was
he in trouble? What was going on and why did Matsuda feel drawn to
discover the answers, like they were entitled him. “I will…
I can call you back later…?” He couldn’t help but
feel like a total idiot when he talked to L, and he was almost
positive the detective was thinking the same thing of him.
“That would be acceptable.” The soft click of L’s
cell phone reverberated in his ear and for far to many shocking
seconds he was left to listen to dead air as he watched the two men
across from him enter the hotel L’s hand glued to the taller
ones back. Why did he feel as if he were looking at something he
should have never seen, something almost intimate. L rarely (if ever)
touched people and it was jarring to seem him do it in such a careful
way. His interest was thoroughly peaked so he followed them, his
fingers hovering above contact list on his cell. Should he call Agent
Eronel and tell her he discovered L’s whereabouts, or should he
confront L first? It was possible the detective was working a case
and it could compromise him if Matsuda went around calling everyone
in the FBI announcing where L was staying. Putting his back against
the wall next to the hotels entrance he leaned his head to the side
peering into the building stealthily. What would the greatest
detective in all the land do? Matsuda crushed his fist around his
cell phone as he shoved it into his pocket and silently pushed the
doors open to follow the mysterious duo. He was sure L would try and
discover some more stuff on his own first, gather information, get
hard evidence and then report back to his superiors. So Matsuda would
do just that.
-o-
“Ah…” Dashing eyes appeared to glow burgundy as
he examined the scene below from a abandoned rooftop. “There
you are.” Looking down at him set his heart afire
even bundled in thick clothes he looked heavenly. Everything
was falling into it’s rightful place and he would not fail
again. Not this time, not with these angelic powers that suited him
as they would suit any being at the right hand of God. He moved
closer to the edge of the building gingerly stepping over the side,
closing gorgeous eyes he took in the situation, how the harsh wind
felt against his skin and clothes, the way his coat lashed out trying
to escape his body and how fast time dissipated as he tumbled closer
to the earth below. This is what it would feel like to succumb
helplessly to death but he wasn’t plummeting to his doom
he was falling into a graceful flight. There was no better time like
the present, no better time to get ball rolling, reveal his findings
and replace that crooked spined un-perfect detectives life with his
own. L was not deserving to breathe the same air as his God.
Yes, God would be so pleased when he saw him. Surely Kira thought him
dead. He smiled wildly, the cool wind whipping through his hair as he
soared smoothly, a wingless creature skating amongst the dark sky.
He landed hard with a grimace glued to his face, he was still
learning the ropes and hadn’t gotten the landing down
completely but he‘d get it right next time. He was like a
fascinating unbreakable machine able to easily understand or adapt in
a multitude of situations. Steady fingers pushed coal colored hair
out of his eyes as he batted long tree branches that aspired to block
his way with the other hand. He listened with a passing appreciation
to the rhythmic sound of dry leaves and brittle twigs breaking
beneath the pressure of his steps. His heavy coat cleared a path
behind him as he walked resembling something beautifully wicked, a
fallen angel or un-saintly well dressed royalty. The palm of his hand
reached out in front of him colliding with a smooth wet limestone
wall hidden behind twisted knobby vines that were easily guided out
of his way, revealing a cavern of stairs he casually descended down.
A small voice assaulted him before his expensive Italian shoes hit
the last step.
“Tell me you found something worthwhile.” Long hair
was flung over her shoulder as she turned to greet her underling with
a passive face.
“I told you I would and I did, we have L’s location.”
“Perfect.” The petite woman seemed to glide over to
him her delicate fingers brushing his dark hair back into his eyes.
He looked dangerous like this, menacing, in that handsome serial
killer way. She smiled. “And Kira?”
“Of course he is accompanied by Kira. I wouldn’t have
cared to come back and tell you otherwise.” There was a smirk
on his face that she itched to slap but she was too pleased with this
newfound information to bring herself to strike the other man. Lenore
turned away from him clasping her hands in joy and he pushed his hair
back out of his eyes.
Excellent job Mikami.”
“I will not fail God again.”
“Of course you won‘t.” The sudden darkness in
her voice startled him and he wondered what evil plan she was
concocting in that annoying mind of hers. If there was anything that
stood true in their little undead society it was his allegiance with
Kira, he would not let God be hurt, especially by her.
-o-
Light stared on in wonderment at the creature before him who
was daunting but beautiful. The young Yagami wanted nothing more but
those cold lips connecting with his skin again.
“Are… are you alright?” He pondered aloud as
L pounced on him whispering a haunting no in his ear.
Their ride came to a silent halt with L’s frigid lips
against Light’s ear seeming to move of their own accord along
his face, ‘resting’ manically on his neck. Razor-sharp
teeth grazed alongside the teen’s skin. He wanted to bite him,
taste him, own him, claim this God as his own just to let Kira know
there would always be something more powerful than him. His mind felt
like it was glazed with idiocy as he could not conjure up coherent
thought beyond; sink your teeth in and suck. The detective had
not fed in a day and his hunger had now caught up with him, the
teen’s scent spilling all over his delicate senses. He licked
at the spot he wanted to taste baring teeth against the velvety skin
as he attempted to control his out of control urges.
“Do it.” Light commanded making the detective
grin, his knife-like canines barely touching the supple delicacy that
was Light. “Do not speak.” The pale one ordered as he
tried to disconnect his senses. He smelled divine but L refused to be
provoked by the younger one, with a dark smirk he pushed his ’victim’
into the door pressing him harshly against it. Light’s face
shifted from confusion to pain back to something slightly unreadable.
“Light-kun says do it, as if that is the answer to my
question. Is it?” Breathless, the younger one stared at him,
the doors handle pressing uncomfortably into his back making him
wince every so often as he tried to move against the unmovable L. The
vampire detective blinked soulless eyes as he waited for a response
his hand on the teen’s shoulder and neck keeping him at bay all
the while L licked his lips, looking quite starved. “Mmm…”
the vampire moaned attaching himself to Light’s neck, his body
simply demanding it.
“Your…what?” As if dealing with something he
had no patience with the detective rolled his eyes lifting his head
from the smooth neck momentarily admiring all the red marks he’d
left there, to look into his counterparts eyes.
“Not five minutes ago I asked if Light-kun would like to be
bitten by me.” Those almond shaped orbs widened as the corrupt
grin that easily flirted it’s way to his handsome features
could not be helped.
Yes, bite me detective. Make me dead just like you.
The noxious voice unleashed itself all too quick for his mind to
ignore or discard and Light found himself sickly embracing it.
Light knew he was playing a dangerous game but he had no choice he
was Kira and Kira was Light and while the two may not have agreed on
everything they were one and they agreed on this. Decisions had to be
made, his fate was currently in the balance. Would he die by Lenore’s
teeth or be reborn by L’s? The question was absurd, the answer
ridiculously obvious, he would not fail, he would not allow Lenore to
touch him. He was also pretty sure L would do everything in his power
to make sure Lenore got no where near him. Light looked at L, who was
looking at him with that dark critical detective eye of his,
analyzing him, attempting to read his mind with his super sleuth
powers. For reasons unbeknownst to him a painful tremor rippled
across his heart and L‘s hand fell clumsily over Light’s
chest rubbing the ache there. Could the detective hear his heart
beat? Could he feel the trepidation, the confusion, the want,
the desire, the scary emotion that resembled love? There was
nothing Light wanted to do more than open the door and run away,
especially with L looking hungrily at him and he wasn’t sure if
it was from the lack of food or lack of Light. When the young Yagami
had pretended to feel real, he forgot what feelings he had been
faking in the first place.
True, L was outlandishly attractive, in the end he was still his
enemy, he still detested Kira and Kira of course loathed L. Their
love was kismet but also a field of landmines waiting to be danced
upon. It was brainless to be attracted to someone in such a
circumstance as he, but he was. He wanted to make the detective
suffer for doing this to him, making him feel this way, dragging him
along and forcing his company. So yes L, fucking bite me and you
will never win this little game of ours not only will you fail, you
will die. How Light wanted to laugh, he wanted to flip his head
back and cackle madly. Instead he remained stoic as he let his eyes
fall from L’s, trying to stomp on that weak part of him that
cried for help and screamed for honesty. The psycho was torn, torn
between something so extremely complicated he was barely able to put
into words and something that was simple as driving from point a to
point b. There was a part of him that wanted L dead and this other
part that just wanted. That stupid, overly human emotional side of
him that found a kindred spirit in L. But as long as Kira existed
there would always be a wall, there would always be danger.
“I would, I won‘t mind-” Light responded
attempting to seem shy or helpless. Helpless little Kira, unable to
kill and in a crippling situation that only L could rescue him from.
Save me detective, save me and either surrender to my will or your
deadly fate.
L’s eyes roamed over Light’s still form his brain
seeming to crack, all the best parts seeping out to sully the floor
as a vision of a past dream engulfed all that he was. “I
won’t stop following you, now help me pray for the death of
everything new.” The distorted shape was electric like static
as it faded in and out of focus, extending a blurry hand to him. “If
you sting me I won’t mind.” He
remembered it clearly the words were like something lethal infecting
him, like visiting his very grave. The phrase lingered sickly to the
edges of his mind and clung to his ashen skin. “We’re the
virus.” Light’s eyes narrowed in confusion this was not
the reaction he had been hoping for.
“Excuse me?”
“Get out.” His voice was just as stoic as his stone
face and that was just a little frightening.
“What!?”
L opened the door, his capacity for patiently waiting as Light
grasped to understand the simplest things in a prompt manner were
wearing thin, “We’re here.” Light on the other hand
looking seemingly oblivious was not, he cast a knowing gaze through
heavily tinted windows to see, that yes they were there. He’d
known they arrived the minute the car had come to a stop. “You‘re
sitting on my hoodie, hand it to me?” He didn’t remember
where or when it came off, but it was and he was not getting out of
the car until it was on. The detective threw the hefty sweatshirt at
him as he quickly exited the vehicle blocking Light‘s way out
as his cell phone rang.
“What the fuck… move!” He practically
yelled shoving at L’s legs. “You are doing a terrible
job of keeping me safe. The whole fucking world can see your face
right now. I hope you know this.” L stared blankly at Light who
did not try to hide his displeasure and agitation with the current
situation. The vampire said nothing as he moved his unblinking gaze
to his phone and sighed deeply, placing a finger to his lips
inaudibly telling Light to shush. Light decided to either ignore the
order or he just did not care who heard his voice so L instead placed
the thin finger on Light’s lips, which didn’t stop the
motor mouth one bit. “Who is it? It better be me because that
is the only person you need to be standing in my way for!” The
detective raised an eyebrow at this. Light must have been very upset
to speak and act this dumbly.
“Temper. Control it.” The frustrated mass murderer
grit his teeth at L, he was not a child in need of correcting. “It
is Matsuda now if you will please lower your voice.” L heard
Light growl as he flipped open his phone and pressed it to the side
of his head. “Yes?” Matsuda may have been a bumbling
idiot when it came to most things but there was one quality he had
that many of his colleagues lacked and that was determination. That
could be a very dangerous weapon, even in seemingly incompetent
hands. “Ryuuzaki, hey-”
“What is it that you want?”
L carefully moved away from the door and Light took this as his
cue that he was finally allowed out so he did, standing and
rolling his shoulders back feeling more comfortable. L eyed him as
part of the hoodie fell over one of Light’s eyes and he noted
how appealing he found this look as he forced himself to concentrate
and look away. If he didn’t he would find his face attached to
the teens in a matter of seconds.
The conversation with Matsuda was uneventful as L knew it would
be. There was one thing that perked his interest though and that was
how distracted the younger detective seemed to be. It was strange. If
Matsuda called him there was obviously a reason behind it, something
he wanted to reveal to L, yet he was not doing it. Why? What would
prevent him from forming speech? L was truly not interested in
playing games with the younger man as he was engaged with enough of
them at the time. His long fingers found their way to the small of
Light’s back and he pushed the teen forward indicating that he
needed to move towards the hotel. Light turned back cutting his sharp
eyes at L, but walked off in the direction L wanted him to anyway.
Before the detective knew it he was saying his impolite goodbyes to
Matsuda as the other left him with promises of contacting him in the
future, which he was 2 percent interested in.
-o-
Inside of the hotel L stepped in front of Light quickly, as if
becoming his thin, pale shield to ward off any possible threats. It
didn’t exactly set his skin on fire with rage but it was
something akin to that. He was not helpless. That guy was some
piece of work, first he was all over Light, those dark eyes of his
locked onto his neck as he breathed heavily on his skin. Then he was
suddenly pushing him away and telling him to get out of the vehicle
as if the perfection of his perfect face disgusted him. He couldn’t
fucking understand the guy and he really wasn’t a man equipped
with enough patience to try. But he had to if any of this was going
to work. He tossed a carefree look to L, whose hunched shoulders
seemed to straighten as he strode in front of him and the hotel
lights seemed to illuminate that pale, pale skin of his making the
detective look like a delectable creamy milk that he could just
drink… or lick. That skin was marvelous and as much as Light
wanted to pretend L repelled him, he didn’t. It was so fucking
annoying. Why couldn’t he just hate L with a hate so pure even
Satan would have to do a double take? Why did everything have to be
so freaking complicated? In his anger he threw his gaze away from the
stunning detective and towards the elevators. Yes he would think
about elevators… and hotels… ah…hotels, they
could be so bland.
In Light’s eyes the places they stayed at would eventually
become nameless, the feeling of living a life like that was lonely…
dark. It was not a lifestyle he could willingly commit to, yet he
had. Why was he doing this? Was it selfishness, self preservation
that kept him glued to the lanky detective? Surely he could survive
without the aid of the pale one, but in all honesty he did not want
to. He had a plan to put into motion and if it all worked out it was
possible he and L could be together. It was obvious as L gripped his
cold hand around Light’s and dragged him down the practically
barren hallways of the huge hotel that he wanted him, and not just to
keep him safe and…What-the-fuck? He was supposed to be
thinking about hotels. Fucking hotels.
-o-
L stared at his empty reflection and what he saw there was more
blinding than what he did not. It’s all an act, he is still
Kira after all. “What are you doing?” Light’s
voice inquired from behind him. L looked over his shoulder and then
back to the bathroom mirror.
“Brushing my hair.” dry sarcasm filled the air as he
stuffed his hands even deeper into his pockets.
“No wonder it’s always a mess…” L shot
him a strange impotent glare before turning to look at him, leaning
against the sinks counter.
“Did you need something?” Light tried to keep the
dangerous scowl out of his smile and eyes as he stepped further into
the bathroom. Hell yes he needed something. He needed
to understand what the fuck was wrong with L and why he suddenly
stopped making out with him in the car.
“Well sort of.” He frowned. “You see I was
wondering what happened to you-”
“Me too.”
“What… are you talking about?”
“I’m disappointed, I thought Yagami-kun was brighter
than this.” Light grit his teeth and refrained from slamming
the detectives head through the mirror as he stared daggers at the
older man.
“Excuse me?”
“Excuse you indeed. You lied.”
“Okay Mr. usually blunt as a fucking nail to the eye, would
you mind elaborating?”
L’s thumb suddenly attached itself to his lonesome empty
mouth and he sighed achingly loud. “You are different.”
He paused to lick at the worn skin of his thumb as if something tasty
reside there while he slowly brought his eyes back to Light.
“Different from when we talked on the roof. You had inferred
many things.” He sighed again as if this was very difficult for
him to say. “You stated we both had ugly beings under our skin.
I assume you were referring to Kira for yourself?” He waited
for Light to answer but the teen only gave a deft nod of the head.
“Yagami-kun even went as far as to agree with me in the fact
the we are indeed perfect for each other. How alarming. Then
you embraced me. Your words and actions foreshadow dangerous
outcomes. Kira is conniving and I believe unable to love or have pure
true feelings for anything or anyone except his own wants and if
Light is Kira we are destined to be doomed.” Where the fuck was
all of this coming from? Had Light done or said something he was
unaware of , was it something he said while in the car? Whatever the
reason he had to steer the detective away from those partially untrue
thoughts. Maybe the detective thought Kira and Light were two
separate entities, maybe L planted that out of control weed in
Light’s head, and maybe it was affecting his dreams but it
unfortunately was not true. There was no doubt that he was Kira and
Kira was him, he had grabbed that notebook as Light, wrote the names
of criminals in it as Light, and was on his road to a difficult
victory as Light. A god has many names, yet many remain as one being.
It was good of the detective to bring this up, he was in need of
getting his head right. Kira was just a name, but Light… Light
would become God.
But now, now he needed to make L understand he was not backing out
on him or retracting his feelings because he wasn’t, which is
why Light found L’s attitude so odd.
“I am able. If I was not then you would be dead.” L
laughed and Light narrowed those deadly eyes at him. He didn’t
see what was so funny, now that he knew L’s secret it wouldn’t
be that difficult to kill him. All he had to do was shove him outside
at 6 am. Ashes to ashes dust to dust… ha ha. He didn’t
let the smile that consumed his mind touch his face as he reached out
and squeezed the detectives shoulder. He cared for L, but if the
detective wouldn’t bow to his will, they would ultimately have
some serious problems on their hands. “L, I’m sorry if I
made you think otherwise but what I said on the roof that night I
meant. I think we are great together be it as a team or something
else…”
“So will it be you and I against the world?”
What…whoa…was L serious? Was he being
sarcastic? Light did not know and if he could he would pay to find
out the answer. Why wasn’t the investigator easier to read, the
fucking lunatic. Fuck, he wanted to pull his hair and scream.
He had no idea what he was doing anymore he was a little out of
control and it was all L’s felt, all L’s fault for doing
this shit to him and saving him. He should have left him on those
fucking steps to die.
“If it has to be.” Then L smiled.
-o-
Yes Light knew it was stupidly obvious that he felt something for
the vampire detective. He wasn’t sure how deep his feelings
were but he knew beneath it all what his true motive was. To survive,
to win, to be victorious. To do this he realized he might have to
convince L to turn him, in doing so he would or should be ‘safe’
from harm where Lenore was concerned. Quietly he moved from the
kitchen to the living room where L was setting up a computer and he
couldn’t help but smile as much as the sight of the skinny
detective, whose face was ridden with child-like glee as he set up
his machines, made him want to puke. As his eyes painted their way
over L’s form he could not help but notice the detectives neck
was without marks or scars and he wondered if the man would allow
anyone to bite him. It would not do for that perfect skin to go
unmarked for much longer. Suddenly or as if the pale one had read his
mind he frowned and he looked so much like a little boy it made Light
want to hold him.
He wondered if L was sad because he was no longer part human and
unable to walk in the sun. He wondered a lot of things mainly he
thought about what L said, would it be them against the world? Is
that what he wanted and what did L actually mean by that? Was the
super sleuth sincere in his words and feelings, could he trust them?
“Need some help?” L un-startled and always knowing turned
to him and shook his head as he plugged in his laptop.
“This is fairly simple.” Light practically snorted
building a spaceship was fairly simple for L.
“I wanted to tell you something.” L climbed into a
chair and whirled it around so he was facing Light placing his thumb
and forefingers on his face as he waited for the younger one to talk.
“Before we left I had this dream with your Mom and it was
pretty lucid, it felt like it was actually happening.”
“Yes. She has the ability to do that.”
“Meaning?” Light said through his seemingly
permanently grit teeth.
“That is how I knew she was getting closer to us. She can
communicate through dreams, manipulate them, but she is harmless.
Nothing she does in a dream has actually happened in real life.”
Light would hardly call that harmless.
“Oh. You don’t think that would have been helpful
information to know early on?”
“I did know.”
“No L, I meant me… for me to know.”
“Possibly, but the fact of the matter is I am telling you
now and as they say better late than never.”
“You know what just forget that. I don’t want to
argue.” L raised an eyebrow at this and his hand dropped from
his face as he stared blankly at Light. “I don’t. I
wanted to tell you about my dream. It gave me an idea, well actually
you gave me the idea.”
“I was in your dream?” He asked with a weird kind of
goofy smile.
“Yes and you lied, you told your Mother that I no longer had
ownership of the notebook and because of this my blood was useless to
her. Is that true?” Light grinned to himself thinking; if L's
Mother could manipulate dreams why on Earth would she want him to
dream that? She wouldn't, but L on the other hand... Was it possible
the detective could also manipulate dreams?
“Yes.”
“So if I gave up ownership she would leave us alone?”
“No.”
“Come on! Then what? What would happen?”
“She would kill you anyway, she has pursued you for this
long and to deny her what she wants will make her angry and therefore
result in your death.”
“So no matter what I die?”
“In her mind yes. I am here to prevent that.” Light
couldn’t help the slight blush that colored his cheeks at L’s
words. The detective was so adamant in protecting him and had been
since the beginning. It was infuriating and slightly mind blowing.
“Why L?”
“I don’t know.” His thumb was back on his lip as
he stared at the ceiling in wonderment puzzled by his own actions. “I
think it is because I care deeply for Light-kun.”
“Oh.” Light’s blushed cheeks colored even deeper
making him look as if he had make-up on. “What if I gave the
notebook to you, and you took ownership?”
L’s head snapped quickly from the ceiling to Light’s
face. “I do not want ownership.”
“I meant -”
“No matter what she will attempt to kill us both. That is
why we must stop her first. Do not worry.” Easier said than
done and why would she kill them both? Himself he understood, but L?
“Does she want ownership of the notebook?”
“Yes. The Death Note in general will add to her abilities.”
“Why don’t we destroy it?”
“You would allow this?”
“…No.”
“Hmm.” L placed a piece of candy in his mouth sucking
on it loudly as he looked fixedly at Light.
“No, I wouldn’t destroy the only means to attaining my
goals.” His long arms crossed smoothly over his chest, looking
every bit as confident as he was. “You know L I honestly think
I have suggested some pretty valid plans but you keep blowing them
off. In giving up ownership and hiding the note we can still win.
Lenore may want to tear me limb from limb but at least she won’t
get the power from my blood or the book.”
“Light-kun would give up ownership?”
“To live, yes.” And because I know I would get the
book back in the end.
“What about to die?”
“I know it is a possibility but as you said before you’re
going to prevent that from happening. Wouldn’t you agree this
method is safer and makes a lot more sense?” L nodded slowly
taking the candy out of his mouth to lick at it. “You are
causing me to come to some bizarre contradicting conclusions as to
why you really gave me back my death note. I think you knew all of
the suggested options all along and you had this all planned. You
could have done so many other things, you could have just burned the
book and continue doing what you are doing now… keeping me
safe or whatever your perverted mind wants to call it.” He
smiled as L continued to lick at his treat. “Ultimately that
train of thought leads me to believe you have a thing for Kira,
keeping him under your thumb and within your power.” Light
could have added more but he didn’t want to push his luck. L
was more power hungry than he let on.
“Partially true.”
“Would you mind explaining the parts that have been left out
then?”
“I would mind.” Light’s patience was g-o-n-e…
gone, he had none, none at all. He grabbed the collar of L’s
shirt yanking the scrawny investigator closer to him as he growled
menacingly in his face. “You expect me to follow you like some
damsel in distress?”
L removed himself from Light’s grip and smirked. “Light
will follow where I lead him and damsels that are in distress do not
follow they are rescued, they have no means to follow. Does this
explanation suit you?”
“What… no!”
He put a finger on his lip as he spoke. “Come now the
prospect of me rescuing you from the very clutches of your death does
not sound alluring to you?
“No, not at all and I am more than capable of taking care of
myself, without your skinny ass helping.” With one long
finger shaking in Light’s face L calmly answered, “According
to your earlier explanation that is untrue.”
Out of nowhere like lightning to the head, Light‘s fist was
flying out in front of him and connecting with L‘s face making
him fly back into the wall. The detective was quick to react with a
powerful kick to Light’s chest knocking the teen to the floor
where L pounced on him like a tiger eyeing his prey. “Why can’t
you be simpler? Why the fuck can’t you just tell me the parts
you left out or what you mean exactly!!!?” Light’s hands
were on L’s pale neck attempting to asphyxiate the vampire.
When that didn’t work he pushed the detective off of him with a
knee to the gut.
“I…” L rubbed at his stomach then his throat as
if it hurt that bad. “meant that exactly. You got
part of it right.” He was stalking back over to Light, his eyes
glazed with the color of night, his bangs covering most of the
alluring sight.
“I should leave.” Angrily Light crossed his arms over
his chest all while he still lay on the floor. “I should just
fucking leave, this is ridiculous.” Stupid detective and his
stupid eyes. He hated the power this man had over him, it felt like
ownership. Him being trapped here unable to make a move without L
knowing it first. That must be why he found himself flying at L, his
fingers gripping into his shoulders as he commanded with his strength
for L to fall to the floor.
“I can guarantee you will succeed in greeting your death if
you leave here without me.” There it was again that superiority
the other thought he had over Light it made him roughly shove the
other to floor as he sat over his lap leaning in to laugh lightly.
“You would like that wouldn’t you?”
L laughed back though his was loud and crazy. “Listen to
yourself. You can not think past your anger. I would not like it,
that is why I risked everything to save you. I gave up my life
for you.”
“How fucking noble. I guess I am the damsel then and
you are my prince.”
L smiled showing off his long canines. “I guess.”
“What is that supposed to mean? Am I supposed to worship you
now?”
“No. You are supposed to cease your use of words, just
shut-up and be thankful that someone cares that much.” And
Light, he did just that he shut-up leaning forward crushing his lips
against L’s thinking: I will fucking show you who should be
thankful.
A/N: Oi vey Lots of things going on but not enough yummy L vampire
stuff in my op but it will happen, L‘s hungry right? So there
