Ryuk was bored. He couldn’t stand being the only real shinigami in this masquerade, especially because no one, except Raito, could even see him. Though, even he had to admit, the detective’s costume was so perfectly Rem that if the human were just a bit taller, it would’ve been difficult to tell him from the real thing. To amuse himself, Ryuk was making faces at random children. He wished Raito would give him just a piece of the Death Note, so he could tap the kids with it and actually scare the crap out of them. The teenager’s answer was obvious though, random screaming children would only make Ryuuzaki think there was a death god nearby and raise his suspicion. It was exceptionally disappointing, because Raito and L had not even gotten a single apple the whole night. The death god heaved a sigh.
“Is Halloween over yet?” Raito moaned, tossing his rather empty bag of candy over his shoulder.
“Not even close, we have made wonderful time this evening.”
“Great.”
“But, unfortunately, I have only one more house planned on my route. Perhaps this one will give us a reasonable amount of candy.”
“Doubt it.”
“Smile this time. It might help.”
“…Doubt it,” Raito rolled his eyes.
Ryuuzaki lifted his finger again to push the doorbell. He quickly elbowed the younger man in the ribs, forcing him to paste a false smile on his lips as well. As the door was opened by a very old and mostly bald man, the young men sang out, “TRICK OR TREAT!”
The man stared at them for several moments, before hissing, “I hate Halloween! Get the Hell off my lawn, before I shoot you!” He slammed the door. Unfortunately for him, the detective was several thoughts ahead of him and already had a foot in the door. The man blinked in confusion at the fact that he was still staring at these two hooligans instead of at the back of his door.
“I must warn you, sir,” L looked at him with his emotionless stare, “If you do not give us treats, we will be forced to trick you.” He seemed completely unfazed by the pain in his foot.
“Get off my lawn, or I’ll call the cops!” he shook his fist.
“Very well. You have chosen,” Ryuuzaki slipped his foot out of the way, and the door closed with a bang.
Raito had already sat down on the steps of the porch, his head held in his hands, “Fine. What are we gonna do?”
Ryuk suddenly looked up with interest, a trick of some sort, especially when dreamed up by possibly the two smartest people on earth, definitely promised to be fun.
A smile played across the sugar-crazed man’s face, “Oh, Yagami~kun. You know me better than that. I have saved my most intricate plan for such an occasion,” he tugged on the chain, “On your feet, Raito~kun. There is much work to be done. Can I trust you?”
“Trust me with what?” but he gasped as he felt the cuff disappear from his wrist.
“It will be more useful to me to have you off the chain for this trick. We will accomplish this a lot faster, if we can travel more than a short distance apart.” Raito had not even seen him take out a key, and already the handcuffs had disappeared as well.
“Don’t worry. I won’t run away. I have no money for a plane ticket and have every desire to return to Japan.”
“Wonderful. Then let us begin.”
