“Come Cho,” Saitou called out, while he stuffed the last of the files into his carry case. Saitou was waiting for another file that he needed to review on his way to Nikko, which he had Cho fetch for him from the file cabinet in the file storage room. “Just hand it to me Cho, and I’ll study it all on my way to Nikko.”
Cho grinned and handed Saitou the file. “It sounds to me like Miss Akatsuki had been very active outside of Japan and probably will be a handful to work with when you meet up with her in Nikko.”
“Apparently you have been doing more than file clerk work, Cho.” Saitou reached out and made a gesture to Cho to hand over the file.
“I reckon I don’t wanna be a ‘file clerk’ for the rest of my career as a police officer—Not with all my talent for sniffing out crime. I figured, why not study the material and give you my input, if you should ever need it, that is.” Cho was sounding more like a hopeful ‘want-to-be’.
“If you desire to be anything more than a file clerk, I would suggest you first learn how to follow procedure, which in this case—is for you to refrain from reading classified material.”
Cho walked over to Saitou’s desk and handed the file over to the stern wolf that didn’t seem to have a smidgen of a sense-of-humor that morning.
“Who knows, maybe you’ll need me on the next assignment, and we’ll turn out to be the undefeatable team that squashes out crime throughout Japan, effortlessly with our unique ‘keeeeeyai’ hocus-pocus!” Cho made a few fancy martial arts poses flinging his arms in the air.
Saitou smirked, “Thank you Cho,” Saitou placed his hand on Cho’s shoulder. “Keep on dreaming—it seems to be good for your complexion.”
“You can bet your pouch of ‘cigar-rettes’ I’ll keep on dreaming. Damn; without dreams this world would be zero excitement and full of shit!” Cho spoke with his usual Kyoto accent, which Saitou had already grown accustom to hearing around his office.
Cho picked up Saitou’s portfolio while the wolf tied his obi around his waist to secure the hakama-shita and the hakama he wore for under cover assignments. The attire softened Saitou’s appearance somewhat, and was less formal than the police uniform everyone associated him with.
Cho took a minute to look at the wolf and was surprised to see the new side of Saitou. “Hey, you don’t look half bad in that git-up. If I didn’t know any better, I would even admit that you’re a handsome sucker.”
The wolf responded with a smirk and a headshake on his way out the office door.
The two police officers made their way to the front of the office and another file was handed to Saitou by one of the investigative police officers that was waiting to catch Saitou on his way out.
Cho rushed to the front door and open it for for the wolf. He bowed. “Safe trip, Fujita-sir.”
Saitou stepped through the door and nodded. “Hmn, Cho, I shall see you in a few days. Mind the fort, I’m counting on you.” Saitou was off to Nikko with his material in hand and hoped that the separation will prove to be enlightening for both Sano and himself.
Cho returned to what was fast becoming his daily routine with the files. “Shit, why the hell am I rushing back here to do this?” Cho sat himself down at Saitou’s desk, leaned back in Saitou’s chair and folded his hands behind his head. “While the ‘WOLF’ is away, this police officer is taking it easy today!”
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Saitou situated himself in the small confinement of the carriage and sat the portfolio on the seat across from him. He noticed his travel bag was up on top of the carriage secured. Saitou also noted that Cho had so far shown himself to be reliable. Perhaps, Saitou would consider putting Cho to the test on the current case.
The carriage began to rock and bounce, indicating that Saitou was headed north, to Nikko. It wasn’t a long journey, just a few hours by carriage from Tokyo. It was a good amount of time for Saitou to get familiar with the new assignment.
Even with that on the forefront, Saitou was aware that ‘preoccupation’ was lurking just outside of his mind’s reach, awaiting Saitou’s permission to usher in.
“I better get to work on this,” Saitou murmured. He reached over and sat the portfolio on his lap to study the material, but he wasn’t able to absorb any of the information. He read through the intro-files for the second, and even a third time, but couldn’t keep the image of Sano’s face from competing with his work for recognition.
Saitou tossed the portfolio on the seat across from him once again and removed a cigarette from its pouch. He knew he had to come to terms with his swaying thoughts about Sano before his preoccupation got the better part of him and hinder his clarity for the mission. Saitou allowed his thoughts of Sano to proceed.
“Hmmm,” Saitou thought out loud in reference to the question Sano presented to Saito last night. “Sano was right when he said that we hated everything about each other, but was he right about love?” Saitou looked out of the carriage window and whispered to himself, “That moron actually said he loved me!”
Although something inside of Saitou stirred when he heard Sano admitted his love for him, Saitou wasn’t about to admit it was true for himself. It did cause Saitou to feel good, but the fact remained—they were both of the same gender!
Lust and sex were one and the same to Saitou, but love? Can it be possible between two men? Obligation, loyalty and even honor were expected, but how would an emotion such as ‘love’ be beneficial for the two concerned? Saitou thought.
Saitou continued to think about it, engaging in conversation with him alone in the carriage as it sped off to Nikko adding more miles between he and the young man who was responsible for stirring so many thoughts, as well as emotions within him.
He exhaled the last smoke from his cigarette then tossed what was left of it out the window. Saitou whispered, “Complicated, indeed…”
Saitou leaned forward once again to retrieve the portfolio that rested directly across from him. It was being a constant reminder that the assignment was pressing.

“Sano, it sure is nice to see you back here at the dojo,” Kenshin said while he was in the process of hanging out the laundry. “It’s been awhile, hasn’t it?”
“Yeah… well, sorry about that, Kenshin,” Sano replied. “Things for me had been… sort of confusing.”
Kenshin bent down to get another article of clothing, stood erect again, and faced Sano noticing that the young man seemed troubled. The frown on Sano’s face along with the droopy shoulders spoke a subtle hint that his friend was uneasy about something.
“Oh? Is there anything you’d like to discuss with me?” Kenshin invited Sano, sensing that perhaps Sano was ready to talk more about what’s been on his mind lately.
Sano looked straight ahead as if in a trance.
“Sano?” Kenshin called out. “Is everything all right?”
“OH,” Sano chuckled, “I bet you must be thinking I’m some sort of basket-case the way I’ve been acting lately, huh?”
Kenshin grinned and squinted his eyes in his usual manner. “I thought it was more along the line of ‘love’, Sano.”
“Huh?” Sano looked at Kenshin with a combination of shock and surprise.
“Uh huh,” Kenshin said, taking advantage of the opportunity. “When I think about it, you had been acting strangely ever since we got back from Kyoto. At first, I thought it was because you were mourning Saitou’s death, as well as recovering from all else that involved Kyoto.” Kenshin’s expression became serious. “One would have thought that you would have been relieved to learn that Saitou was alive. That wasn’t the case with you as I saw it, because you seemed even more disturbed, troubled, and perhaps even frustrated when you realized Saitou was still alive. All of which was a good indication that you were struggling with an issue greater than what you let on. "
“Nothing gets past you, Kenshin. Even if I did try to hide it by not coming around here to the dojo, you still sensed that something was up.” Sano thought back on the whole Saitou-thing and his deliberate effort to keep it all under wrap, even from himself.
“When I gave it more thought…” Kenshin paused to take a moment to observe how Sano was reacting to what he was saying. “…I remember you said something about—not hating Saitou anymore.”
Sano stood there with his mouth open, staring at Kenshin with amazement.
“Kenshin, I don’t know what kind of mind power you have, but it scares the hell out of me to know you were observing me all along!”
“I don’t know if I would go as far as calling it mind power,” Kenshin laughed. “I think my guesses are confirmed on what it was that you ‘did not’ say.”
“Huh?” Sano scratched his head as he tried to take in the meaning.
Kenshin chuckled at Sano’s confusion and explained further.
“You see Sano, it was just a matter of knowing you for so long. That enabled me to decipher your thought and behavioral patterns. The advantage I have in knowing you helped me to determine what kind of situation you were dealing with, or at least have a good idea."
“Hmm, this gets more interesting by the minute,” Sano pinched his chin as though he was figuring things out as Kenshin highlighted some of the things he was observing about Sano’s situation.
“The confirmation, for me was–what you did not discuss with me. That led me to believe that ‘something’ had taken place between the two of you that motivated you to dissolve the bitterness you harbored against Saitou for so long.”
“I have to admit,” Sano said, thinking on what Kenshin just told him. “You and I had gone though some thick and thins, and well…” Sano looked down at his feet, which was another one of Sano’s habitual behaviors that maked it easier for Kenshin to read Sano so easily.
“I guess I can trust you not to repeat anything I told you from this point on?” Sano hinted and looked back up at Kenshin.
Kenshin grinned at Sano. “That you can, Sano.”
Sano hesitated blushingly, glanced up at the sky, and then looked back at Kenshin timidly. “Yeah Kenshin, you are right.” Sano’s cheeks took on a pinkish rosy glow. “I didn’t tell you everything that happened when I went to see Saitou in his garden. I did go over there to punch his face in for keeping all of us in the dark about being alive, but like I told you at the Akabeko, it didn’t turn out that way when I got there.”
“Yes, I recall you filling me in about your confrontation with Saitou up until that point.” Kenshin nodded.
“Well, what I didn’t tell you was…” Sano felt like running away and forgetting this whole thing. Even forgetting that Saitou existed, if that would help Sano escape how he felt right at that moment. Sano almost believed that Kenshin had been standing in the garden with he and Saitou and already knew everything even before Sano disclosed any of it to him.
“Yes, Sano, I’m listening,” Kenshin said urging Sano to go on.
Sano continued with a beating heart that felt like he was about to die with embarrassment. How could I be telling Kenshin all of this? He thought to himself, wanting to dig a hole and bury himself in it, but Sano was determined to spill everything.
“What I didn’t tell you was that, instead of hitting Saitou, I missed a few times and…well… Saitou kissed me on the lips.”
Sano got it out, finally. It was a relief, but Sano held his breath when he got through saying what he had and then looked at Kenshin, expecting the worst. To Sano’s surprise, though, all Sano saw was Kenshin’s typical smile and acceptance written all over the redhead’s appearance.
“Mind you,” Sano quickly added, “it was just a brief kiss, and I left soon after it too.” Sano tried to make what he said not seem so wicked.
“So, is that why you were at the Akabeko when I ran into you yesterday?” asked Kenshin, still urging Sano to go on.
“Yeah,” Sano nodded, “I guess your common sense told you that. It sort of gets more complicated from there too.”
“Sano, is this something you really want to tell me?”
“Hell yeah, I can’t think of anyone else who I can talk to about these things; except Katsu, but all he’d do is laugh at me about it and think I’ve gone homo.”
Sano appreciated the fact that Kenshin tried to offer him a way out from discussing it, but Sano wanted to go on.
“After you left the Akabeko,” Sano continued, “Saitou showed up to ask me a few questions about that guy I knocked unconscious. I guess I had a lot to drink, so a lot of that conversation is a blur to me—Except for the fact that I ended up leaving the Akabeko with Saitou.”
“I see.” Kenshin crossed his arms in front of him. He realized how tough it was for Sano to talk to him about it all, so Kenshin wanted to make sure he was offering the young man his complete attention.
Sano wasn’t sure how Kenshin would receive what Sano was about to tell him. Sano took another deep breath and let everything out and hope Kenshin will still considered him a friend afterwards.
Sano went on… “I asked Saitou if he’d mind if I walked home with him, since it was on the way to my place anyway. Then he blushed and confessed, “Hell, the truth is, I like being around Saitou, and I also like the way I feel when I’m with him.”
Sano drifted from the conversation a little thinking back on the events.
“Anyway, we both ended up in Saitou’s garden again, just like the night before. Only this time the situation was different.”
“Different?” Kenshin questioned. “How so?”
“Well, besides not trying to punch him out like the time before, I told him that, I loved him.”
Sano mentioned that with sadness and looked away so Kenshin couldn’t see how painful it was for Sano to be confessing it all. One thing that Sano held onto with his life was his pride. Being so open and revealing with Kenshin was taking a lot of humility on his part.
“May I ask what Saitou’s response to that was?” Kenshin asked gently, not to quench his own curiosity, but Kenshin wanted to find out what Saitou’s intentions were. After all, Kenshin considered Sano as a very good friend, and the last thing he wanted to see was Sano hurt.
“Well, I was expecting Saitou to throw a fit and kick me out of his garden, but then, that was when the unexpected happened.” Sano hesitated again as he recalled the event. “Saitou drew me to him and he, well…we kissed.” Sano cheeks turned even a brighter hue of rose than before. “We shared a long deep kiss that grew pretty intense.”
Kenshin became more concerned than before when he realized that Saitou initiated the intimacy between he and Sano. “Did you sleep with him, Sano?”
“I won’t lie to you Kenshin. I wanted Saitou to ask me to sleep with him, but he didn’t. Sano sighed with a frown, “Instead—that narrow eyed, dog-face bastard told me he was going away for a few days to work undercover in Nikko.”
Kenshin sighed in relief. The smile on Kenshin’s face reappeared. “Oh? That is interesting, indeed it is!”
“Interesting my ass—I didn’t think so! ” Sano blurted. “I accused Saitou of fucking with my brain, but all he said was—‘His leaving was a good thing’. Saitou mumbled something about, ‘how a man can’t think well when lust is present.’ He also told me that we needed to think about what was happening between us, so that we can prepare for the future–or some bullshit like that. Anyway, Saitou left for Nikko this morning.”
Kenshin was certain that Saitou was not just using Sano, but it sounded to him like Saitou was being careful not to let the horse run before the cart in their situation.
“Sano, you and Saitou have a considerable amount of years between the two of you. That, in itself can make your thought patterns differ from his. What may seem like insensitivity from Saitou, may very well be his ‘wisdom in years’ you heard and his decision for what is best for the both of you.”
Sano about dropped his jaws, “Are you saying you think it’s a good thing and you agree with what Saitou said and did?”
“Think about it Sano,” Kenshin attempted to help Sano to understand. “If the both of you decided to continue to travel on the path that you are on now, it certainly is difficult road to travel. Japan is changing rapidly, and western views are finding its way into our culture. Soon, what may have been the way of the samurai will no longer be acceptable. It is soon coming when what was done by the samurai will be told only in secret.” Kenshin paused and made sure what he said next is emphasized. “This includes the relationship between two men that wanders beyond mutual friendship and crosses over into love’s territory.”
Kenshin and Sano were silent for a minute. It was obvious to Kenshin that Sano was digesting Kenshin’s words. Sano’s contemplative expression, with a hint of deep concentration gave Sano a different aura.
“I never thought about it that way, Kenshin. You and Saitou had been around through the revolution and definitely survived many hardships. Both Katsu and I did too, but we were just kids and was way too young to see how much Japan had changed since you and Saitou been around. I wish that wolf would at least explain things to me like you always do. He’s always such ass hole when it comes to answering my questions. Especially when it involves talking about the past!” Sano frowned and smacked his right fist into his left palm.
“Hey Kenshin?” Sano looked into the ex-hitokiri’s violet eyes.
“Oro?” Kenshin responded.
“What do you suppose I do now?” Sano asked hoping for an answer that would relieve the heart-stress and unrest Sano was experiencing.
“That is for you to decide Sano, but I will tell you–I am very relieved that it is Saitou that you have found favor for.” Kenshin had a serious look about him again. “Saitou and I have had our share of life on opposite sides, but I’ve always respect for that man. He never wavered for money, never let power overcome him, and he always fought for what he believed was right.”
“This means a lot to me, Kenshin. I’m glad we were able to talk. Beside that, I don’t feel like I’m going insane anymore.” Sano said laughingly.
“Kenshin! Sano! I thought I heard voices back here!” Kaoru trotted into the dojo’s courtyard where Kenshin and Sano were standing.
“Miss Kaoru! Welcome back,” Kenshin took a parcel of groceries from her.
“Missy! You seem to be as happy as ever!” Sano greeted Kaoru as well.
Kaoru looked over at Sano and placed her index finger to her chin and said, “Hmmm, you’re probably here for a free meal, aren’t you?”
Before Sano could speak in his defense, Kaoru pointed over to the dojo’s hall and continued to say to Sano, “Nothing’s free these days buddy. If you expect to eat, the dojo needs a good sweeping.” Kaoru said nothing more but giggled as she trotted to the main house.
Sano looked over at Kenshin and smirked, “Looks like the Missy was just waiting for me to show up so she’d have someone to boss around. Must be different around here with Yahiko being away for so long training in Kyoto with your Master, Hiko, huh?”
“Yes, it is good for Yahiko to learn from a great sensei like Hiko-sama, and I think Yahiko is learning what true discipline is for the first time. That is not to say Miss Kaoru does not teach discipline here at the Kamiya Dojo."
“Hey, are you two going to waste the day away by standing around talking?” Kaoru called from the dojo’s main house.
“We’re on our way, Miss Kaoru,” Kenshin reassured her.
“Your wish is my command, Little Ditzy, I mean Little Missy!” Sano shouted back.
Kenshin and Sano enjoyed laughter together like old times.

“Very pleased to make your acquaintance, Mr. Fujita.” Mitsu extended her hand inviting a handshake.
Saitou received her gentle clasp and bowed. “I’m very pleased to make your acquaintance, Miss Akatsuki.”
“Please, since we will be working together, I would like it if you refer to me as Mitsu-san. I believe it will take off the edge for myself. I’m opposed to edges and try to eliminate them as soon as they arise.”
Saitou read into her handshake and mannerisms. Mitsu was heavily influenced by the western culture. It was a good indication that there could be other connections going on with the foreign black market trade in the area. Something Saitou planned to investigate later, but for right now, Saitou’s main goal regarding Mitsu involved getting more information on the leader of the syndicate, Hisomu Horie.
“I hope your trip from Tokyo was a pleasant one, Mr. Fujita–please, come and have a seat with me", Mitsu invited.”
Saitou looked around the room critically as he took a seat on a satin covered settee and noticed the décor shown mostly European although littered with fine oriental knickknacks.
“The travel was quite pleasant, indeed,” Saitou replied. “I thought it best I make this my first stop before registering at the Inn.”
“Well, I’m glad you decided to meet with me first, Mr. Fujita. Mitsu smiled sweetly. May I serve you some tea?”
“I assume the tea will be as delicious to drink, as you are to look at, Mitsu-san,” Saitou let the compliment out smoothly in order to test her.
Saitou narrowed his eyes allowing them to slowly drift from her alluring deep black orbed eyes and attractive soft face down to her equally inviting cleavage that shown provocatively under her scanty loose kimono. If Sano weren’t occupying so much of Saitou’s sexual energies, this lady would definitely be on the wolf’s menu.
“My, my, Mr. Fujita, it looks like we will get along just perfectly.” Mitsu chuckled flirtatiously. “You’re not exactly ‘hard’ to look at either. She giggled playfully and added, “…not yet anyway.”
“Make yourself comfortable. When I return with our tea we can then get started…” Mitsu giggled again …”Started with business, that is.”
Mitsu looked at Saitou for a moment longer to see if there was more to Saitou’s self-possessed exterior that she could pick up on. When she saw nothing obvious she turned and exited the room to prepare the tea.
Saitou was way ahead of her in his discernment of her personal character. The background check on her was thorough enough to aide Saitou in strategically in mapping out a plan using Mitsu as a portal to obtain deeper information.
Saitou’s thoughts didn’t hesitate to embark on a side excursion back to Tokyo–back to his garden–then ultimately back to having Sano right where Saitou wanted him to be—back in his yearning arms. Saitou couldn’t remember the last time he felt so exuberated. Not like that. Not the way Saitou felt when he had Sano near him.
NO! Saitou stopped the recollection before it could go any further. Not fully understanding why he was allowing himself to dwell on it, Saitou caught himself and turned his attention toward the doorway through which Mitsu recently exited to get some tea. Not now! I can’t allow myself to think about this now, Saitou battled with his thoughts for self-control.
“Here’s tea!” Mitsu sang as she carried the tea-server into the room.
Saitou stood up and took the tray from the beautiful woman allowing her have a seat on the settee. Saitou set the tray down on the European tea table and walked over to the opposite side of the table to sit.
“Here, Mr. Fujita,” Mitsu lightly tapped on the settee next to her. “Please sit here.” She smiled warmly not trying to conceal the fact that she enjoyed looking at Saitou.
Saitou sensed Mitsu’s interest and he stopped in mid stride. “It would be my pleasure to do so, Mitsu-san,” Saitou responded as he looked at the inviting woman. Saitou was amazed at himself for not feeling the least bit enthusiastic about sitting next to a beautiful woman who was obviously taken to him.
Mitsu served the tea and passed Saitou’s cup to him. “Shall we begin Mr. Fujita?”
“After you, Mitsu-san,” Saitou nodded and took mental notes as she disclosed the information Saitou needed to take back with him to Tokyo.

“Don’t be a stranger Sano!” Kaoru said as she gathered the last dishes off from the chabudai. Although Kaoru liked to pick on Sano in fun, she cared for him as a brother, and mothered him as well.
“I won’t, I’m sure I’ll be back to earn another meal again soon!” Sano chuckled.
Kaoru laughed and said, “Without Yahiko here, it’s been awfully quiet. I just know you’ll be a big help around here. Not that you wouldn’t be a big help if Yahiko was here.” Still laughing, she took the last of the dishes with her into the kitchen.
Sano stood up from the chabudai, looked at Kenshin and thanked him for everything. “I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you helping me out when I really thought I was going to lose my mind. Beside that, I had a good workout cleaning the dojo. That was good therapy in, and of itself!”
“Think nothing of it Sano, you know where to find me the next time you think you are going insane. You’re more than welcome to stop by anytime,” Kenshin reminded Sano.
The two men laughed together and it was all the medicine Sano needed to get his two feet back on the ground again. Sano left the dojo and started back to his apartment. He approached the little bridge that crossed the creek. He noticed Megumi Takani on travel toward him.
Megumi and Sano’s relationship went way back–almost as far as Sano’s relationship with Kenshin. She and Sano got off on a rather rough start when Megumi’s knowledge of medicine got her into a situation of being forced to make opium. That same opium was responsible for killing one of Sano’s best friends at the time. Eventually, Kenshin rescued Megumi from her circumstances. Sano forgave her for his friend’s death when Sano realized that Megumi was willing to die, rather than live a life as a producer of opium. After her rescue, Megumi turned her life over anew and started working as an assistant doctor, helping people, to atone for what she had done in the past.
“So, if it isn’t the ‘Fox-lady herself!’” Sano teased Megumi as they ran into each other on the bridge.
Megumi takes an eyeful of Sano and realized how much, and how fast he was changing from being a punk, to a very attractive young man.
“Hello you big dope!” Megumi teased Sano in return. “I haven’t seen you since you were VERY ugly! I must say, you’ve improved some. Now, you’re just ugly! ” Megumi held her hand up to her lips and giggled out loud like flirtatious school girl.
“Yeah, yeah, you’re just saying that because you desperately want to play doctor on me and run your fingers all over my body, but you just don’t want to admit it, do yah?” Sano challenged.
Megumi moved up against Sano and reached up to caress his face. “You mean like this, big boy?”
“Don’t start what you don’t intend on finishing, Megumi, or I might have to force you to finish what you start,” Sano playfully warned.
“Ooooo, such a big threat coming from a big boy!” Megumi continued the charade, “What if I don’t want to stop and I just keep this up, or even slide my hand here?” She trailed her delicate fingertips from Sano’s handsome face, over his collarbone and stopped to point at his solid, attractive chest.
“I think I can let that slide, but if you let your hand go any further, I must warn you that I won’t be held responsible for my actions,” Sano continued in the fun.
“Hmm,” Megumi hummed, “decisions, decisions, what shall I do?”
Sano looked down at Megumi enjoying the play acting, but at the same time realized that he would have given just about anything to be right where he was, on that bridge with Megumi—if only, it had been another time in the not too distant past. Sano often fantasized of sweeping Megumi off her feet, taking her in a frenzied ‘no bars hold’ bed venture. Instead, Sano was anxious to continue his walk home and be alone with his thoughts. Right then, Sano realized, that he was missing Saitou.
