AN: So sorry for the long wait for an update. There is another story I am working for my Bleach fandom that suffered too, between being sick, holidays and writers block. I finally managed to get moving on that story again, and now this one is coming back to me too. Writer's block is the real demon here. Grrrr. Anyway, hope you all like the chapter.
And to rowenpoe. Yes, I would love it if you did some art based on my story. I would certainly love to see it. I unfortunately can't draw to save my life, so it would be nice to see someone doing art for it. I had no way to contact you to give you the go ahead, so hopefully you will read the newest chapter and get my message. :)
Chapter 6
Waking was a slow process for Hakkai the following morning. His eyes would open, only to slip closed again. He wasn't exhausted, just completely comfortable where he was. Between awareness and half sleep, he realized he was still in the room he had met Sanzo in. He could still smell the remains of incense and burnt candlewicks. It was a calming place. He just didn't understand why he couldn't remember anything from last night. It was just like before.
The nightmare had tried to make an appearance. That much he did remember. Once again he was thrust into that dark castle of death, but before it could even begin to escalate, a light had arrived. Sanzo had stood before him, taking the knife from his bloody hands. He had no voice when he tried to speak to Sanzo, hysterical and in a panic that the priest would think him a monster for seeing what he had done.
Sanzo did not react in any such way. Instead he had reached out to Hakkai, hands taking his own, and when Hakkai had tried to protest, he realized there was no need to. He wasn't covered in blood anymore. He was clean, shed of the filthy clothes and crimson mess. In a fluid movement, he was pulled close against Sanzo's body, the priest just as nude as he. There was no fear left, only passion and sexual desire. Sanzo took away his nightmare, all the while saying the words... I'll purify you.
Hakkai sat up slowly as he recalled the dream, body aching with the pleasant soreness of sexual activity. His eyes widened. It had only been a dream. His body couldn't feel like this after just having a dream. He looked down at his arms to the vines, and his face burned. Had the vines....played out what he dreamt? His faced burned hotter still. He'd had a sex dream about Sanzo.
"Oh my," he whispered.
It wasn't unusual to have a fantasy dream. He was a man after all, and had them before on occasion, but it had never involved a man. And Sanzo, of all that he could have dreamt of. He was the highest rank of priest there could be, and he imagined Sanzo doing...things. Hakkai squirmed and felt the heat of arousal in his belly when visions of the erotic dream came back to mind. He shook his head and tried not to think about it, but the images were persistent.
Shamefully he thought of what his vines must have done. To have pleasured himself in such a sacred place. What would Sanzo think? He looked at the cursed vines and trembled slightly. Those marks in the orchard haunted him still, and these spells of blank memory were making it worse. He had done something, he was certain of it. He would have to confront Sanzo and get an answer this time. He started to rise when the door slid open.
"You're awake," Goku said, holding a tray of food in his hands.
"..Yeah...Where is Sanzo?"
"Out, but he didn't say where though," Goku said and brought the food in. "He just told me to make sure you ate something.
"Oh."
"You okay, Hakkai? You look like you're upset."
"I'm fine. Head just a little fuzzy from waking up." He looked at what Goku had brought him, but he didn't feel very hungry. He was more interested in talking to Sanzo. His sudden disappearance made him more suspicious.
"You gonna eat?" Goku asked, staring at the food.
Hakkai chuckled. "I'm not really hungry, Goku. Help yourself."
"Awesome!"
Goku dug in and Hakkai sat thinking more. He looked around the room for any clues, but there was nothing out of the ordinary that he could see. He replayed last nights events, as far as he could remember, and then just drew a blank.
"Hakkai, you sure nothing is wrong?" Goku wiped crumbs off his chin and watched him.
"I'm not really sure, Goku. I keep...getting blank spots in my memory."
"Like how?"
"During meditation apparently. I wake up and can't remember anything."
Goku swallowed a bite. "Mn...I got blank spots." Hakkai looked at him. "Like before, when I couldn't remember how I got imprisoned in the mountains. And when I lost myself those times.." He touched the diadem on his head. "I don't remember any of that, just flashes here and there sometimes."
Hakkai nodded. "I guess you do understand what I'm going through."
"Is Sanzo helping you though?"
"Yes, I have been sleeping better."
"Well, maybe for now don't worry about the memories so much and concentrate on getting better." Goku smiled brightly.
"That's good advice." Hakkai smiled soft, but he knew he couldn't do that. Sanzo knew, and Hakkai would get it out of him. "I'm going to take a bath." Hakkai stood. "Thanks for the...food."
With cheeks stuffed, Goku nodded. "You're welcome."
Hakkai headed for the bath. Talking to Sanzo was more urgent, but that would have to wait now. He went about the task of getting the bath ready and hummed to himself. He stripped down and stepped in, the hot water soothing his muscles as he lowered down. He became aware of the soreness in his lower region again and he shook his head. Best not to think about what he did for his own sake. He already felt embarrassed enough.
He washed, letting the hot water relax the tension away. He thought about Gojyo and wondered how he was doing. After what Sanzo told him, he was hoping that he was keeping the house in order now. He tapped his claws on the side of the tub. Maybe the tension wasn't completely gone after all. He couldn't just sit here at the temple again for another day, and with Sanzo gone.... Hakkai finished washing and got out of the bath. He made up his mind. He would go talk to Gojyo.
~*~
Going home was one thing, but convincing himself to leave the temple was another. He made it outside and near the path that lead back towards town. He stood there for several minutes, just staring at the trail. He hadn't been expecting it to be this difficult. Over time he had become comfortable with his body this way, but that fear to walk boldly out into the open was still there. The minus wave was still too fresh in people's minds. He was doubtful the wound would ever completely heal.
Birds chirped in the nearby trees, their song catching on the light breeze. It was a lovely day, sunny and a clear blue sky. Perfect for a walk. He just needed to move his damn feet. He wishes Sanzo were there so he could perhaps give him his limiters back, but that was highly unlikely. He hadn't given them back yet each time he had asked since he'd arrived that night.
"You aren't a coward," he muttered to himself. That got him moving and he headed off, though at a leisurely pace. At least it wasn't a wet muddy mess this time around. When he finally got to the edge of town he slowed up even more. Maybe Gojyo was out. It was possible. He wasn't the type that sat around at home all day long. It was just another excuse to not go further, and he knew it. He had to do this. It was part of the process. He couldn't very well hide in the temple forever. Hakkai walked on.
The aroma of fresh baked bread and other smell of cooking filled the air. Shops were opening, and the day was already coming alive with customers. On a morning like this, he would be out shopping. At least that was his normal routine up until now. He braved ahead, walking along the road. Some looked twice, others avoided looking at all. Those that knew Hakkai best smiled and waved like it was just another day. He was recognizable enough to them, and they were not afraid. It gave him some hope.
His appearance wasn't without some disturbance. A young mother with her child saw Hakkai and picked up the little girl and ran, screaming when Hakkai raised his hand to say it was okay. He watched them disappear around a building as his hand lowered back to his side. He was not angry with her. He felt pity for the woman, because with that reaction, she must have lost loved ones when the wave hit. He had to admit, even by youkai standards, he was a strange one with vines that he could move at will, and sometimes when he was not aware at all. It was the not aware part that bothered him.
He picked up the pace after that, heading for the house to get to the whole point of venturing out. He walked up the path that led to the small dwelling, and felt a familiar presence. It wasn't a friendly one. Banri. Hakkai remembered him very well. It was hard to forget someone so unpleasant. He was confused as to why Banri was here after using Gojyo and nearly getting him killed, and why Gojyo would even allow the crude man to. It was too off to make any sense.
Hakkai moved to the cover of the trees to circle around, feeling secure that he hadn't been near enough to be seen. He stepped lightly through brush and leaves, eyes focused on the house, using nature to keep himself hidden. He listened, but heard nothing coming from the house. His sense of urgency increased when he could feel Gojyo in there too. What the hell was going on?
Hakkai felt, before he heard, two more energies coming through the woods in the direction of the house. He ducked and waited, knelt down to keep out of sight behind a large tree. It was two youkai, both male, and both unsavory looking. Their perception was weak, and they were oblivious to his presence. All the better for him. Neither of them were in a hurry and they stopped to have a smoke.
"I don't get why Banri wants to hang around."
"Guess he's sentimental," the other answered and chuckled. "He always had a soft spot of Gojyo."
"Well, Gojyo ain't got a soft spot for the boss, that's for sure. Red had murder in his eyes as soon as he set eyes on him."
"That's true." The thug laughed and inhaled from his cigarette. "Besides, I think 'ol Banri is waiting for that other one to show up. Says he wants to settle a score for the punk being so rude to him when he came to see Gojyo last time."
"We could be here forever then. He told us that dude was long gone."
"Nah, Banri could tell Gojyo was lyin."
Hakkai's claws dug into the bark of the tree as he listened to them. From the sound of it, Gojyo was being held inside the house against his will, and all over Banri's unwarranted need for revenge. It was a petty reason, but that was just like Banri. The son of a bitch didn't have a sliver of honor, and he sure as hell didn't know what true friendship was. His claws dug deeper into the wood, fingers curling with the pressure.
"What you think he's gonna do to the guy when he finally shows up?"
"Beat the hell out of him most likely, maybe even kill him. Depends on his mood at the time, I guess." He chuckled. "Though he did say he was a pretty fucker. One of those proper types. Whatever he does, he'll probably tap his ass first."
"Banri is a crazy fucker," the other said and they both laughed nervously.
Hakkai had heard enough. He leaped so fast that neither one of the youkai notice he was there until it was too late. Hakkai landed a hard punch on the first ones chin, and the youkai's body crumbling to the ground in an unconscious heap. The other barely had time to make a sound as Hakkai shot out several quick vines to bind him, his hand clamping rough over the offenders mouth to keep him from yelling for help. It all happened in mere moments. He pressed the youkai against a tree, eyes cold.
"I know a little bit about crazy myself," Hakkai whispered and smirked, maneuvering a vine around his throat. The Youkai's eyes widened and he hysterically fought the tight hold. "Be still," Hakkai hissed. He let off the pressure, but kept the vine where it was, pressing his hand harder over his mouth.
"Mrphh."
"I can't understand you, and I'm not moving my hand, so just listen." The youkai attempted a nod. "I'm going to ask you yes or no questions," he whispered. "Blink once for yes, and twice for no. Understand?"
Blink
"Good." Hakkai glanced at the unconscious youkai and wasn't worried that he would wake anytime soon. "Is Gojyo hurt?"
Blink. Blink.
Though his face looked unsure. Perhaps he had gotten roughed up a bit, but no serious damage. Still, it angered Hakkai enough to tighten the bonds around his body another fraction. The youkai yelled against his hand, but it was far too muffled for the sound to carry.
"Was he hit?" Hakkai asked.
Blink.
"Are Gojyo and Banri the only two inside the house?"
Blink.
"I thought so, but I wanted to test to see how truthful you could be." The youkai whimpered against his hand and looked like he would just about choose anywhere to be other than where he was right now. "Are there any others around, in town perhaps, that are with you too?"
Blink. Blink.
"For your sake, I hope you are telling me the truth. It is youkai like you that make me hate what I am, but at least I know I have a humanity that you can never possess." The youkai's eyes narrowed only slightly. "Is Banri armed?" he asked, continuing his interrogation.
Hesitation.
"That's too much thought. It gave you away. He's armed."
The youkai sighed. Blink.
"Not surprising." Hakkai looked at him. "Must mean you and your friend here have something too." A vine slipped to the one on the ground and searched until it came up with a knife. It wasn't very threatening by blade standards, but youkai rarely used weapons. Their bodies were more than enough to inflict damage or death. He then searched the pinned youkai and came up with the same style knife. Both the blades had the same symbol on the hilt. Four small stars with a snake in the center. "This your gang symbol or something?"
Blink.
"So all members get a shiny knife, huh?"
Blink.
"That's precious," Hakkai muttered, keeping the knives wrapped in the vines. "This goes against my better judgement, but when you and your friend wake up, I suggest you get as far away from here as you can, and don't come back." He punched hard and the youkai's body went limp in the vines. Hakkai let him fall to the ground and he looked at them both for a moment. The two were so young, and already their lives were taking a terrible road. Maybe this would wake them up.
Hakkai couldn't put this off any longer. He looked toward the house past the scattering of trees and still saw no movement. He again circled around to head through to the back. He ran toward the house on the side where there was just a small window, and less of a chance to be seen. He could still sense Banri inside, and as he neared the door he could hear muffled voices. He touched the knob and turned it slow, cracking the door open barely an inch.
"Why are you lying to me, Gojyo? I thought we were friends."
"Yeah, you're just my best fucking buddy," Gojyo voice dripped with anger and sarcasm.
Hakkai heard the distinct sound of a fist hitting flesh, and the soft grunt of pain that resulted from it. He peeked through the door and saw Gojyo spit blood on the floor. He was tied to a chair and his face was covered with bruises.
"Dammit, Banri. You gonna act like a ragging bitch just cause I don't want to be part of your gang anymore?"
"You know it's more than that! That little shit pissed with the wrong guy!"
"You can hold a grudge, I give you that much," Gojyo muttered and spit again. "Though I should be the one holding that grudge, since you ditched me with those fuckers so you could make a clean getaway."
"I told you, I got delayed."
"Sure, sure," Gojyo muttered.
Banri grabbed up a bottle of whiskey and took a drink, pacing back and forth. He kept glancing at Gojyo, expression full of loathing and contempt. Hakkai searched for options, and the best he could come up with was rushing in and attacking. His speed in this form was more than adequate for the task, but when he saw the gun on his belt he hesitated. He wasn't expecting to see a gun, but a knife, maybe even a sword. The only gun he had ever seen up close was Sanzo's. What if he managed to pull it and shoot? A stray bullet could hit Gojyo.
Chirp.
Hakkai looked quickly to his side where he was hunkered down and saw Hakuryu. He looked happy to see him, and his wings flapped as his little head rubbed against Hakkai's hand. He pet the small dragon, eyes back to the men inside. His clever little friend had the sense to keep out of sight, and most likely had flown off to get him and they missed each other.
"Good boy," he whispered.
Hakuryu didn't chirp again, mindful of the situation, but his neck pushed out, little head looking around to see what his master was watching. Hakkai could see Banri was getting more agitated by the moment, and him drinking was escalating it. The youkai yanked the curtain aside to stare out the window. He was obviously waiting for those other two to show back up.
Sorry, but that won't happen, Banri.
Hakkai looked down at Hakuryu and sighed. Time for making a plan was dwindling away. Soon enough Banri would realize something happened, and he may take it out on Gojyo. Hakuryu knew that look from his master. He was about to fight, but he wasn't worried, his master was strong.
Hakkai leaned closer. "Hakuryu, go try to find Sanzo for me, okay?" The dragon rubbed his head against his cheek before he took flight in the direction of the temple. He didn't feel like he needed the help, but it was a good excuse to get his small friend away from harm.
"What the fuck is taking them so long?!"
"Maybe they got delayed," Gojyo said dryly. "I heard from a asshole once, that can happen sometimes."
"Shut the fuck up!"
"You asked."
Banri growled and brought his hand back for another blow, but stopped when Gojyo looked at him with cold contempt. The youkai chuckled and lowered his hand as he knelt down in front of Gojyo.
"Gojyo, just tell me where he is. That's all I'm asking here."
"And what would happen if you found him?"
Banri smiled. "Just ruffle his proper feathers a bit, that's all. Bet he'd even like it."
What a sleazy bastard. Hakkai shifted lightly, looking at the knives his vines still held.
"You can tell me, Gojyo. You tap that? He is a pretty little bitch from what I remember."
"You know me, Banri. I'm all for the ladies, but I will tell you this.."
"Hm?" Banri smirked.
"If you came within a foot of him, he'd rip your cock off and shove it down your throat," Gojyo said with a smirk.
Banri sneered and stood, hand up again for a strike. The knife impaled his palm and the youkai cried out in surprised pain, eyes wide on the blade embedded through his hand. Crimson dripped over his pale skin and onto the wood floor.
"Fuck!" Banri fumbled and grabbed the hilt to wrench it free, but screamed again when a second blade struck his upper left thigh.
"I thought you might want those back," Hakkai said pleasantly as he walked in the house. "Me being proper and all, I like to return things."
"Damn, Kai, about time. I was wondering how long you were gonna hover outside and watch me bleed," Gojyo said and smirked.
"I'll fucking kill you!" Banri grabbed for the gun with his free hand.
Vines shot out and wrapped around his wrist, yanking his arm back and away from the weapon. Another slide over and circled the gun to pull it from it's holster and over into Hakkai's waiting hands. Banri struggled with a yell, looking at Hakkai with murder in his eyes.
"You're gonna pay for this!"
Hakkai tilted his head. "Am I? I'm not the one bound up and bleeding."
"Thanks for the irony, Kai," Gojyo said with a snort.
"I do apologize, Gojyo. That was rather cold of me to say in your current condition.
"This isn't over! You hear me?!"
"I think it is," Hakkai said. "Your friends are out for the count and you're trapped now."
"Cocky bastard," Banri said with a obscene grin. "You think you're so fucking smart, don't you?" His impaled hand lifted, the red warmth of his blood a slow but steady flow. "You're not so smart." Drops of his lifeblood dripped over a stretched vine that was keeping his body still.
Hakkai felt the effects almost instantaneously. His vision doubled and his legs felt unsteady. There was no pain, but something in Banri's blood was sapping his strength. He lost control of his vines and they slackened and fell to the floor like the dying stems of a plant. He was too shocked to even be confused as he fell to his knees. It was happening so fast, this strange form of attack. Panting, he looked up and saw Gojyo yelling his name, but his voice sounded miles away.
"Like that?" Banri asked, gritting his teeth as he yanked the blades from his flesh. "I got that little trait during the minus wave."
"Wha..." Hakkai's lips didn't even want to work properly to speak, and his eyelids felt overly heavy when he blinked to try clearing his vision.
"What the fuck did you do to him, Banri, you son of a bitch!"
"He's higher than a kite right now. Awesome yeah?"
"You're sick!"
"Maybe a bit, but sometimes you have to be to survive," Banri said and dropped the bloody knives on the floor. He yanked the curtain off the window and started ripping strips off to bind his hand and leg, going about the process with practiced speed.
"Kai, can you hear me, man?"
Hakkai blinked again, head bowed down, barely holding himself up with arms that felt like rubber. He could hear Gojyo, but it was like he was under water, his voice dulled. He tried to answer, but his voice wouldn't work, lips working pointlessly. He tried to move a hand and his own weight finally was far too much, and he fell against the hard floor, the wood cold against his hot cheek.
"Comes in handy really. Some punk tries to get the better of me, manages to cut me, and boom, splash the red stuff on their skin and it's fly time." Banri retrieved his gun and holstered it. The knives he picked back up and tossed on the table. "They're so fucked up, killing them is almost sad sometimes."
"Son of a bitch!"
"Wasn't sure touching those freakish vines with it would work, but lucky me, huh?"
"Don't touch him, or I swear I'll kill you, Banri!"
"Sorry about this, Gojyo, but the only ones dying are gonna be you and the princess here." He leaned over and roughly flipped Hakkai over on his back and smirked. "But first, I'm gonna have some fun, and you get to watch."
"Banri!"
"Shhhh, can't you see how relaxed he is?" Banri lowered and straddled Hakkai's waist.
Hakkai wanted to bury his claws in and rip Banri apart, but he failed to even lift his hand off the floor. His fingers twitched, his eyes blinked, and his heart was pounding in his ears. It was too hot in the room. Far too hot. Banri ripped open his shirt, but it was still not enough to cool his fevered body. Gojyo was yelling something, but he couldn't make out the words anymore. Why was it so hard to think? Hakkai whimpered when something hot and slick surrounded one of his nipples. He couldn't move his head to look, so his eyes had to do the work for him. Banri's vile tongue was flicking and circling around the rising nub.
No! Stop! Hakkai gasped, lips working to yell what his mind was screaming.
"Don't worry, bitch. I'm gonna give you a good time before the end." Banri chuckled and sat up to pull his shirt off over his head. He tossed it away and looked down at his prey. "You should have never messed with me." Hakkai closed his eyes and waited for the worst.
"Die!"
The gunshot blast reached his ears like nothing else could. Hakkai opened his eyes, his drugged mind trying to comprehend what he was seeing. Banri was still grinning, eyes opened in shock. There was a hole in the middle of his forehead, the wound wide and gaping, blood and bits of brain dripping sluggishly down his face. The horrid vision disappeared as Banri's body finally realized it was dead and fell over beside him with a sickening thump.
Hakkai vaguely heard his name being yelled by two voices, both frantic. He couldn't answer, he didn't try. Sanzo was there above him, reaching out. Hakkai wanted desperately to reach back, but his limbs would not budge. Sanzo looked so upset, it was a strange thing, that worry and...sadness in his eyes. Those beautiful amethyst eyes.
