„This is the Way. Your daughter has treaded off the beaten path; thus she will be torn asunder by the beasts in the uncharted void. No deviation will be tolerated; no trespassing will be forgiven. For we are the All-Convert; we are one, we are many. All shall abide by the Way”
A flash of red light… as if through closed light. The mind stood there, unable to make sense of the scene she’d just witnessed…

In the Geo-front, there are only two people who think they know exactly what all the rooms in the facility contain; from your everyday life-saving coffee machine to the deadly, awe-inspiring behemoths that stood between humanity and the raging monsters that were known as angels. To most they are known as Evas.
To one, they are more.
To another, they are even family.
In his usual position upon the command tower, Gendo Ikari suppresses a yawn.
“Fuyutsuki… these images are authentic, I take it?”
The grey-haired sub-commander nodded gravely.
“Yes. It seems Nerv-2 has disappeared from the face of the earth. Timing and power correspond to our expectations, and that means we’re well along the way to finding the truth now”
He fell silent once more. Nothing else needed to be said. Gendo Ikari did not waste his words.
Maybe the work had gotten to him. Maybe his brain just couldn’t take 45-hour-nonstop cogitation as well as it did when he was young, maybe it was just a trick of the light.
But Fuyutsuki could have sworn that Gendo Ikari had smirked as the repeated telemetric video images depicted the destruction of 100 billion dollars worth of hardware, as well as two thousand living souls.

The two girls both woke up with a start, panic twisting their hearts as the dream seemed to choke their breath away. Lying panting on Rei, Asuka clutched hold of the blue-haired Hangetsu; her eyes filling with tears as the terror slowly got washed out of their systems. The two held on to each other as they shed the tears, not knowing where they had come from.
Finally, they both calmed down, minds slowly coming to grips with reality again.
“Did…did you just see what I saw?”
Asuka mumbled it into Rei’s neck, her ear pressing against Rei’s cheek.
“Yes… I can’t tell if it really was just a dream… it seems more like… a memory of some kind”
She felt the redhead shiver.
“I was so scared! It felt like I was going to die! Oh, god, Rei…”
She tightened her grip again, thoughts of horror threatening to break out her tears again.
Rei ran a hand through the red strands, kissing her gently on the neck.
“I doubt the vision can harm us.. at least not now. It felt like something from… but no, that’s impossible”
Asuka looked up at her, her face marred by a small frown. She moved up until she could meet Rei’s eyes, still staring off sideways.
“What? What is it Rei?”
The red eyes flickered back to her, then closed as she sighed almost imperceptibly.
“Do you remember what I showed you last night? We sublimed to the Plain. That is where our souls can coexist directly with each other, and spend the time we have together more efficiently”
Asuka nodded, a slight blush telling her exactly what she remembered.
“The Plain is our radio ether, so to speak. We project our souls to it as soon as we have connected, and thus are able to find each other in it. We recognize the pattern by intuitive recognition”
Asuka sat up, not fully understanding. Rei crossed her hands over her chest and stared into the blue orbs of her bedmate. She just couldn’t take her eyes off those perfect, blue orbs. How ironic that a being practically impersonating all that would be associated with red could have such a contrasting window to the soul. It fascinated Rei, the layers of depth Asuka’s personality frequently displayed so often contradictory, and yet so very true to Asuka Langley Sohryu.
Asuka began to grow impatient as the blue-haired Hangetsu’s pause stretched on.
“Ahem!”
“Oh, I apologize”
“’S all right. You were struck by my overwhelming beauty, is all. Lesser beings have-mph!”
She was silenced by a pillow to the face.
“As I was saying, the Plain lets us connect. To those we recognize; in other words, those we love… but I think this was a connection that goes far back to the beginning of our… kind, I think. This could or could not have something to do with our current engagements with the beings that we have tagged as Angels. We heard something concerning a daughter of some entity; also the All-Convert. I have no direct memories of either. It is… frustrating”
She closed her eyes, the frown now deepening again.
Asuka patted her thighs gently.
“Ah, well. That’s a mystery! And mysteries like to be left alone. Now, how about we actually get up, hmm?”
Rei lightened up a bit as the redhead jumped out of bed and stretched, yawning widely, arching her back in a joyous concert of cracking bones.
“AHHH! God, what time is it anyway!?”
She glanced around the room, searching for a clock or something. She noticed her clothes, scattered around the apartment. She smiled at the memories. Then, something caught her eyes.
“Oh shit! How are we going to tell the others about us!?”
She pounced down onto her cell, opening it to read missed calls.
23 missed calls.
All from one number.
“ARGH! Misato’s going to rip me a new one!”
She hit send, then glanced at Rei, who had crawled to the edge of her bed, sitting upright, her legs tucked underneath her.
Asuka threw her a look that screamed help, but all she got in return was a non-responsive, blank look.
Panicking slightly, she bit her nails as she waited for someone to pick up.
Three rings.
Four.
Five-
“Katsuragi household. Ikari speaking. ”
Her breath hitched. Her heartbeat quickened.
“Hello? Who is this?”
“Shinji, it’s me! Asuka!”
“Asuka! Oh god, where are you!? We’ve been looking all over for you! Misato’s nearly pulled a search warrant for you, you know?”
“Uh… wow.. sorry. I’m at Rei’s place… I’ll be there soon-“
“Rei’s place? Oh. Um…. Well, I’ll tell her when she gets up. Uh, is something wrong? You sound nervous…”
The redhead felt her chest knot up. Biting through her fear she rallied herself and answered
“Uh… yeah I’m fine! What could possibly be wrong with me!”
Somehow it sounded a little hysterical to Rei, but she reasoned her counterpart was somehow unsettled by the situation she was in.
Why? Was this all too much to bear?
Rei then thought about telling it to her superiors.
Was Commander Ikari going to accept the relationship? Or would her affiliation affect the ability to pilot Eva 00?
The thoughts made her very, very uneasy. For now, caution seemed to be the word of the wise. She decided that until her path was set clear for her, she would have to keep her status qou. Her next test should decide if the two of them would reveal the relationship to the closer affiliates and co-workers, their superiors and friends.
All this, though, depended on Asuka’s choice of words in the next twenty four hours.
She decided that if they had to, she’d stand behind Asuka Langley Sohryu until she could no more. Opening her eyes, she was slightly startled at something.
“Okay, bye---“
Asuka hung up on Shinji, still flustered about the whole situation.
Rei stood and walked silently over to her, laying a hand on Asuka’s naked shoulder as soon as she reached her red haired partner.
“You seem tense, Asuka. Is there something wrong?”
Asuka still stared at the phone, her free hand still fidgeting with her lower lip. She looked up at Rei, then saw Rei’s eyes dart down then up again. Glancing down, she saw her flaccid penis hanging down from her crotch.
She blushed slightly.
“Sorry. Still don’t have the control thing sorted out yet…”
Rei smiled. “No, I suspect you have it in control well enough. You are conflicted about it, but I believe it has something to do with Ikari, am I right?”
Asuka looked at her bewilderedly, then gasped in shock as she realized what Rei was implying.
“What!? No! Rei, I love you! Not.. not him!!”
Rei moved her hand up to Asuka’s face, resting a thumb on her lips. Asuka grasped it and kissed it as Rei spoke again.
“that is true. My affection to you is more than returned by yourself. However, your heart yearns for something else as well. I can tell…”
Asuka blushed deeply and averted her eyes. Then she pulled Rei into a deep, strong embrace. Tears began rolling over the Germanic girl’s cheeks, softly dripping on to Rei’s shoulder.
“I’m sorry! I really love you, Rei! I can’t imagine being without you… but… but he…”
“In the light of what happened with the twelfth angel, I can assure you my heart was weighted heavily for the entire time he was lost. I am as concerned for him as much as you are, Asuka. I...”
She blushed there too.
“…I cannot ignore the feelings I now harbor for him. It is strange… I did not know what it was until recently. Your confession to me was… surprising, to say the least. And to my… creator…. I have confessed the same thing…”
Asuka pulled away, looking at the red orbs of her love.
“You… you feel that way?”
She took a step back. It seemed strange to Asuka. She had confessed to Rei, ashamed of her unability to love just Rei, and no one else. To open her heart, let her in, and share this feeling between the both of them. Just the both of them. But her heat yearned for the dark-haired boy, and she could not do anything to stop those feelings. But to her, love was supposed to be singular.
“Asuka…”
“I’m sorry, I-I have to go…”
Rei saw the redhead’s stance slip, saw her begin to retreat again… into that shell. As she hurriedly put on her clothes, Asuka never met Rei’s eyes.
“Asuka I-“
“Bye!”
The redhead just upped and left Rei standing naked in the middle of the room.
“What have I done?”
She didn’t know what had just happened. They had both confided in the other, and Rei had hoped the two of them would connect better that way.
But she had run… why? Because she loved someone else?
Asuka was sad about that…
She quickly realized that this could tear them apart. And she could not bear the loss of a loved one. Not again.
Throwing on her school uniform, she hurried after Asuka, five minutes later.

Shinji Ikari was a boy of many talents.
He was able to fight giant, unholy monsters known to the world as Angels.
He was also a rather compliant, capable housewife.
This was a blessing to his guardian, as well as his co-residing coworker. Never before had their washing been so well-ironed, their food so well-prepared. Right now, he was taking the trash out of the apartment and getting rid of it.
I wonder what Misato’s doing right now…
Her room was empty, and no amount of searching could find the radical woman. Seemed fine to him, as she usually teased him while he tried to install some resemblance of cleanliness in the place, something he both cherished and hated. It usually meant she was busy, and the last incident had some serious fallout in the paperwork section.
The joys of bureaucracy.
Somewhere in the administrative building of the UN, a member of the most powerful organization on earth sneezed, but that has nothing to do with the story.
As Shinji dragged the bags to the containers, he heard two sets of rapidly approaching footsteps.
“-ska, wait! I know what you feel, I really d-“
One set stopped.
“You don’t get near me! Stay away from me! All I do is hurt people! And I can’t stand that any longer!”
Asuka! What-
He stopped heaving the bag up, morbid curiosity keeping him absolutely still as the girl heatedly threw the sentences at the other person.
“That is not true, Asuka. You did not hurt me-“
“I did! I just can’t be happy with what I have: God damnit, I have the gall to want more! How can I be so selfish…”
He heard the Germanic girl begin to sob, softly.
“Rei… I love you-“
He almost dropped the bag. Rei? And Asuka? How…
“- and I can’t do this to y-“
A sharp slap. Silence.
Asuka… loves Rei… but how..
He slowly dropped to his knees, his legs beginning to shake for some reason.
Rei’s voice was calm, steady, but hinted just ever so slightly that her feelings had been disrupted. Weird, because Shinji never thought of her to be so expressive as she sounded. She always seemed calm, collected, strong…
“Asuka Langley Sohryu. I made a promise to you, last night. I promised you I would show you happiness, that I would be there for you whenever you needed me. I still hold to that promise. Right now you are making a mistake… a mistake that will bring all our past joy and happiness tumbling and crashing down around us. And I am here to stop that from happening. I love you”
With that, Rei gently turned Asuka’s head to face her, looked her deep into her watery blue eyes and planted her lips softly, but firmly, over the other’s. Asuka knew she was right, and as Rei’s tongue slipped over her lips, she greeted it like the sorely missed lover it was. She let herself fall back against the surface behind her, allowing her to concentrate on Rei instead of her balance.
Rei’s hands slid into her mane, curling her hair and sending small stings down her scalp as she tugged slightly. They lost themselves in the passionate kiss, both hearts leaping to the reunion after the short but painful fight they had just gone through.
Shinji couldn’t make sense of what he heard. Curious, as well as cautious, he stealthily crept nearer to the edge of the containers. He heard a bang as something hit the metal wall, and his concerned curiosity forced him to look around the corner…
What are they doing to each other!?
Rei had Asuka’s face tightly locked to her own at her lips, and they looked like they were chewing… each other…
Is that what a kiss looks like?
He noticed where Rei’s hands had crept, almost flashing Asuka’s panties to him. Then it finally dawned on him that in front of him were two passionately kissing lovebirds. In love. With each other.
He left the rubbish there, setting it down softly next to the container. Then he hurriedly sneaked away from the two, giving them some time alone to each other. Because if what he’d seen on tv was true, then the two would certainly kill him if he peaked. ¨
Of course, a certain dou would kill him if they ever got whiff of him running and not staying to watch. But they were not there now. And somehow it just seemed… wrong. The whole thing.
He ran all the way up the stairs, for some reason. When he reached the top he was breathing raggedly, and tears flowed down his cheeks. His lungs felt like they were on fire, and as he reached the door into the apartment, he almost missed the opening switch that swept the door aside for him. Inside, he collapsed onto the floor, down on his hands and knees, and tried to get his breath back. The tears still flowed. He realized that he was crying. Sobbing, even almost howling his anguish as the memory of the two girls he had always respected, always protected, the two who had helped him in return…
Locked in a kiss that spoke in such a clear manner to even Shinji Ikari that the two of them were not doing this for a dare or a joke or forcing it upon one another. It screamed Love, Desire and Trust. It marked the two of them as bound to one another, for better or for worse and for the rest of their lives.
I should be happy for them…
It seemed right… it seemed as it should be. He always wanted Asuka and Rei to connect well. But now…
Asuka would rather love a girl than me! And Rei….
Rejected. That’s what he felt like. That’s what he had always feared; the cold stab of… almost betrayal after having hoped for that beyond hope.
“Why… Oh why!? I’m so disgusting!”
His arms buckled, followed closely by his legs, and soon he lay curled up in a pathetic featal position.
After some time, he crawled into his room, shut the door and shakily reached for his SDAT. The only thing in this world that had not brought him pain, hatred, disappointment and tears.
Barely seeing through his tear-filled eyes, shinji fumbled with the electrical device until he finally managed to plug both earphones in and hit play.
But the music didn’t soothe.
It didn’t relieve him of the memory, the pain, the gut-wrenching anguish of seeing his hopes dashed so entirely.
The tears flowed unhindered, the sobs shaking his small frame as he relieved their words over and over, unable to let it lie, unable to forget.
Why didn’t I stay within my Eva? So much pain… so much pain!
After what seemed an eternity, his eyes were dry, his throat was sore and his mind pulled itself from this world. No longer able to cope with it, Shinji’s body shut down and granted him merciful sleep.
Dreamless, however, it was not.

Asuka forced herself to part from Rei, who insisted on keeping on, mewling as Asuka nearly pushed her face away.
“Not… not here… people will see…”
Rei, crazed by the feeling sloshing around her abdomen, took a while to realize she was talking. Reigning in her wildfire, she breathed deeply a few times, then stepped back a pace.
“Although our… additional abilities cannot be seen by others unlike us, I agree that our public consumption would lead to questions I am as yet unready to answer”
Her breath was still heavy, and her speech was dragged down by it. Asuka knew what to do, though.
“Quick, let’s get inside…”
Grabbing Rei’s alabaster hand, she ran off towards the house. Then she slowed, stopped…
“Asuka… what-“
“I think we’ve been seen…”
Rei glanced in the direction Asuka was pointing, and realized there was absolutely nobody there.
“Who? I cannot see any-“
“No, not now… the trash bag… it.. it’s bound…”
Asuka’s hand started to shake.
Rei didn't seem to understand. it was just a trash bag to her.
"why is this so important-"
"No one ties the bags... not here... no-one except..."
her head flicked to and fro, looking for the culprit's white shirt. or his stupid yellow t-shirt... or his damn shorts... god... go...
"God.. damn it..."
Rei had to hold her as she lost control of her legs. Something was wrong, and she suspected she knew what.
"Asuka... Asuka! Why are we here?"
Asuka turned her tear-stained eyes to the blue-haired Hangetsu. "What.. why we.."
"You know just as well as I that we came here for one specific reason. Why are you so ardent on avoiding him?"
Asuka averted her eyes, looking down onto the pavement. Even now the thought of the two of them being seen by him of all people was like lead in her stomach… it felt like being nauseous… sick..
"..why… why do I feel… why do I feel guilty, Rei?"
Asuka's exes flicked to and fro from her left to the right, searching, pleading for some kind of answer.
Rei pulled her close, laying Asuka's head onto her shoulder, a hand on her messed up mane of hair.
"that I cannot answer you.. I deeply regret that. You have to answer yourself, Asuka. You are the only one who can solve that problem. I can help, but only by pointing out what you yourself already know. And I think we should confront him, just to verify our suspicion. I will help you, Asuka…"
Gently, she lifted the redhead up, pulling away from the girl. Smiling softly, she wiped away a tear from Asuka's cheek.
"I would appreciate it if you would refrain from crying. It does not suit you well, Asuka…"
The Germanic girl sniffed. Running a hand through her hair, she gave a half-hearted laugh.
"You know, I never knew I would ever let my hair get in such a damn mess…"
She sniffed a ther armpit.
"puah… and my body… shit, I need a shower…."
Rei smiled. Then, a small, almost undetectable smile grew on her face.
Asuka caught it, though.
"what?"
The smile evaporated almost instantly.
"I think we should both elevate our level of cleanliness.. for everyone's sakes. And then…"
She gently but surely turned Asuka around, and began to push forwards.
"… we will rid you of any doubt you may still have. I can promise you that. I am not the only one who loves you with all their heart, Asuka.."
Still slightly hesitant, Asuka let herself be guided up the stairs, an almost everlasting journey to her, and then inside the apartment. A flick of Asuka's eyes and a relaxing of muscles told Rei what she was supecting all along.
"He's not here…"
