Strings
of a Puppet
Of Two Innocents
With Bristol to the west and London to the east, the weather in
Callen is fairly satisfactory. In the winter, being wet and rather
mild, the temperature rarely drops below freezing. Though in the
summer, it is usually pleasant and warm with sunny to partly-cloudy
days. And every now and then a surprise shower can piss on the heads
of the children playing in the street, but still, the weather is
always nice.
Now, with summer nearing it's peak, Rido found himself out on the
back patio more often than not; all thanks to a silver-haired angel
who captured his heart. Believe it or not, most vampires enjoy a
midday walk in the park; provided that they apply a specially
formulated sun block to the exposed areas of skin before heading out;
something Rido was thankful for, because with an active human boy
demanding his attention, who could say no to those innocent amethyst
eyes?
So here he was, under the patio umbrella as the cicada songs filled
the trees surrounding the mansion. Watching Zero flutter around from
one flowerbed to another, twirling with his arms spread out. Giggling
as the breeze blew through his stunningly silver hair. It amazed Rido
that the boy was so carefree.
Zero laughed as he stumbled over a raised stone in the path, nearly
falling. Senri, whom had been silently reading a modeling magazine
under one of the oaks nearby, happened to look up and smiled at the
giggling boy.
“Be
careful, Zero-kun. We don't need you getting hurt...” The
crystal-eyed teen couldn't add, because
your blood would be a beacon to everyone that you're food.
Though the thought alone made Senri crinkle his nose and his fangs
throb. He couldn't stand to imagine the bubbly human boy being a meal
for a greedy and heartless vamp.
Zero turned and grinned at Senri, oblivious to the others thoughts,
then bounced over to the further side of the garden near the storage
shed. It had not even been a full week after Zero was settled into
the Kuran household when Rido noticed the young boy had taken a
liking to the gardens; specifically the rose bushes near the shed.
Watching his little Zero crouch down and gently touch the white and
ruby petals with his pale fingers was a beautiful sight to behold. It
was as if there was a silent bond between the roses and the boy. And
if he concentrated, Rido's sensitive hearing could pick up the sweet
whispers from Zero as he told those blossoming flowers how beautiful
they were becoming. Encouraging them to grow and open their petals.
The innocence was practically rolling off the boy's shoulders, making
Rido's urge to ravish Zero eat at his insides. The young boy just
didn't know how vulnerable he was...
Rido had been nervous about letting Zero wander the mansion without
him. After all, the boy attracted attention without even knowing it.
Being a child made others want to coddle him; being human made his
blood desirable; and being adorable made him the target of lustful
gazes. But keeping the boy at his side at all times would only end
with Zero's growth as a child being stunted and could lead to
underdeveloped skills. If Rido took Zero's childish curiosity away,
the boy could regress emotionally, socially, and physically. And the
apathetic image just didn't fit Zero at all. The boy was human and
needed to grow as one. Rido could do nothing about that until Zero
had come of age.
A tuft of silver appeared next to Rido, pulling him from his
thoughts.
“Look,
Rido-sama! These are for you!”
Two carefully cut roses, one red and one white, were held towards
Rido by a widely grinning Zero, his head tilted slightly making him
look so much like a child trying to please their parent with a gift.
The gesture left Rido's chest tight with inner conflict. Does Zero
see me as a parental figure?
Rido couldn't help but feel a little deflated. The love he felt for
Zero was not the love a parent felt for their child. It was a deeper,
more fervent type of love. A love that, if acted upon now, would be
taboo in many cultures and damned by many religions. A consuming love
that left Rido heated and stirred, in more ways than one...
Zero's grin slowly started to fall when Rido still had yet to take
the flowers, his hand gripping the stems and slowly drawing them back
towards his chest; ambivalent about Rido's hesitance.
“D-Do
you not... like them...?” Zero's crestfallen voice brought Rido
out of his hindering thoughts, eyes softening as they locked with
amethyst.
“They
are beautiful, my love,” A reassuring smile slipped upon Rido's
lips as he accepted the flowers. The relief reflected in Zero's eyes
gripped Rido's heart. Bending forward slightly, the elder tucked a
loose piece of hair behind Zero's ear to peck the boy's cheek. “but
not as beautiful as you, my Zero-chan.”
The reaction was instantaneous. Zero's eyes lit up with joy at the
acceptance of his flowers while his cheeks flushed a wonderful pink
from the flattering compliment. To prevent forcing himself on the
boy, Rido patted Zero's head and told him to go wash up for lunch.
“O-Okay!”
Zero gushed as he hop-skipped across the patio.
As he watched the boy scamper off, Rido couldn't subdue the chuckle
building in his chest. With Zero's arrival, the household's schedule
as well as the nature of it's inhabitants, had done a one-eighty. The
staff, as well as Senri, Kaname, and Rido, have taken on a human's
day and nightly hours. It took some getting used to, but they manage.
Rido still can't put a complete stop to the bouts of gifts showered
upon Zero. It just goes to show that the boy's aura has the affect to
draw people in. Even his guarded and calculating nephew seems to have
taken to falling into the role of a brother to the silverette.
Watching Senri follow after Zero to get ready for lunch, Rido picked
up the roses Zero gave him and placed them in the breast pocket of
his jacket, the length of the stems fitting perfectly.

Mid June 2010
There was only one other time where my heart would swell at the
thought of another. My beloved, Sarah, the mother of my son. Her
disappearance was sudden and without warning. I have given up
awaiting her return by now, for it has been 13 years since then. The
only reminder she left, was Senri. However, the hole she had left in
my heart has slowly started to be filled by the presence of another.
My precious Zero-chan.
The orphaned human boy my entire being yearns for.
The sheltered soul who nearly wept when I hesitated at accepting
his gift of roses.
It has been nearly a month since Zero became a part of my life and
my home. Despite living amongst vampires, he has yet to ask of his
living environment. Something for which I am quite thankful for. How
I would go about answering his innocent questions, I cannot fathom.
For now, I will simply be content to have him near me. When the time
comes, I will do my best to satisfy his curiosity without trying to
sate mine.
Even when I pull him into a heated kiss, he never questions my
actions. I guess that would be the work of my compulsion over his
psyche. With my blood flowing through his veins, my power over his
will has gradually gotten stronger. My word could easily be made his
law. He can not disobey if I activate my Mesmerizing Eye, nor can he
reject what I tell him when I have him under my Commanding Eye. I
have yet to abuse this strong power I have over him, for fear of
inflicting harm on him. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I
lost him in the process.
But taking away his will whenever I want was not done only for my
selfish desires. It's main purpose was to make protecting him easier
for when we travel to Italy. Ashling may be my kin by marital
relations, but by no means can she be trusted. I know that all too
well from past experiences.

Books lay strewn across Kaname's bed. With the midday sun seeping
through the curtains, the brunet found concentrating difficult with
the intense light pouring over his studying material. Every time the
light reflected off a page, Kaname was blinded momentarily and his
eyes were left irritated. Sighing, he pushed aside his studies and
made his way over to his window; the one that just happened to be
overlooking the gardens. With the switch to more 'human friendly'
hours, Kaname spent less time with socializing and more time secluded
in his room surrounded by books. Nocturnal habits die hard.
Shifting the curtain slightly, Kaname caught a glimpse of his uncle
kissing Zero's cheek and patting his head. The sight made the
brunet's stomach tighten, his fangs barring unintentionally. He
watched Senri follow a smiling Zero through the side door. The
burning in his gut left Kaname feeling distraught. The boy had become
so comfortable around his uncle - the same emotionless uncle that
wouldn't spare a glance at anyone not worthy of his time. The same
uncle that wanted complete control over those he considered dear to
him. The same uncle that beat his only son for wanting to become a
male model...
Kaname pushed those dark thoughts away before his control gave way.
Yes, Kaname was worried for the boy's safety. He had every reason to
be. There were many things wrong with his uncle, and even Senri had
distanced himself from the man he calls his father. That is, until
Zero started clinging to Senri like a leech. And everywhere Zero went
with anyone, Rido wasn't too far away. The way he eyed the boy was
unnerving as well. A hidden motive lie deep within those scarlet
pits. It left a bad taste in Kaname's mouth when he thought of just
how vulnerable the human boy was.
Kaname was afraid that Rido had started to obsess over the
silver-haired boy. Anyone who knows his deranged uncle knows that
once he obsesses over something, it never ends well; especially if
the something was a someone. Kaname, if not everyone,
knew the hidden truth behind the disappearance of Rido's mate,
Sarah... A repeat of that incident would be the apocalypse of vampire
society, and the case in present, it would affect humans as well. No
one would be safe from Rido's wrath. That is, if the boy could
actually escape Rido in the first place...
But everything has changed for the better, right? Rido had started to
show emotions - a miracle if there ever was one! And watching a human
child scurry around the mansion was different than what Kaname was
used to, but it added warmth to the vast mansion. Even seeing his
uncle out of his office was out of the ordinary. However, the growing
curiosity surrounding the boy ate at Kaname's conscience. There was
something about Zero that drew people in...
There was no doubting that Kaname was captivated by the boy the first
night he was brought home. His blood smelled honey sweet, but an
underlying scent made his fangs throb and his lust flare. So much so
that his uncle nearly bit his face off when his bloodlust was
reflected in his eyes... Yet, he wasn't quite drawn to the boy's
appearance at first. Rather, there was a seemingly invisible string
that pulled him closer, yet it wasn't forceful... It may not make
sense, but that is the best way Kaname could put the feeling into
words. And now that he had been thinking about it, his bloodlust
wasn't fueled by hunger at all... it was fueled by emotions.
Kaname never felt the urge to harm the sleeping boy during their
first encounter; he was just... curious...
Knock knock – BAM!
Kaname's door burst open, revealing an innocently grinning Zero. The
boy really did bring a lot of well needed light into the Kuran home,
and the brunet could only smile- even if his privacy was being
intruded upon rather rudely.
“Kana-niisan,
lunch is ready!” Zero locked his hands behind his back and
swayed from left to right.
Kaname still felt an empty ache in the pit of his stomach at the
innocent child's nickname. He wasn't used to being called in such a
familiar way. Not even his noble friends called him in such a way.
His murky red eyes landed on the many books scattered across his
bedspread, resisting the sigh that threatened to escape him. If he
didn't clean up now, who knows where the maids would place his books
if he left.
“Ah,
I'll be there in a minute, Zero-kun. Thank you,”
The brunet started when the boy scampered across the room and latched
onto the hem of his shirt, tugging him towards the door. As to not
hurt the boy's feelings, Kaname gave in and laughed at the bold
little human, ruffling his hair and following him down the grand
staircase and into the dining hall. Oh well. I guess looking for
the reference books again later won't be too much of a bother.

Venice, Italy
Golden eyes slowly bled crimson as fangs penetrated the delicate skin
of the young servant boy's arms. Careful as to not inject any lethal
poison, the fangs swiftly withdrew. The two distinct puncture marks
freely released crimson lifeblood. A hum of satisfaction sent a
shiver up the boy's spine, a conditioned bodily response after many
feeding sessions. Rose painted lips descended to the leaking holes,
latching on as she greedily took her fill.
At first glance, the boy could pass as royalty rather than a mere
servant. Instead of rags, he dons a virgin white silk gown accenting
his fair cream skin as well as his feminine figure; his beauty rivals
that of the finest woman for miles, not including the woman feeding
from his arm. Chestnut hair flows freely down his backside and hovers
just above his hips. His deep, forest green eyes were like the rarest
of jade. However, underneath the fine silk and shy eyes, his
seemingly fair skin is marred by dozens of scars- all made by the
beautiful woman feeding from him now. He was her pet; a walking blood
bank as well as occasional bed mate. Despite the obedient slave he
was, he was on the verge of fainting. He had been getting light
headed increasingly quicker during the recent feedings more than
before...
“A-Ashling-sama...
I-I feel... faint...” His voice was soft, just above a whisper;
as expected from a submissive. Ashling's lips released the boy's limb
with a slight 'pop', her tongue swiping across her lips as they pull
into a dark grin. A drop of blood escaping her slick muscle and
sliding down her chin made her look dangerously seductive.
Clouded jade eyes stare at the cascading crimson liquid, unable to
focus clearly due to the rapid blood loss. His breaths were coming a
bit faster than usual and a sudden chill rushed through his body.
Ashling's burning red eyes simmered back to their shimmering gold;
her gaze softening on the clammy, pale skin of the boy. He may be her
servant, but the boy held a soft spot in her heart.
“I
seem to have taken more than you're used to. Forgive me, Lucifer.
Lately, my visions have left me... starving.
I'll request Luna next time. For now, you may rest in my bed for the
time being.” A lace white-gloved finger gently caresses the
panting boy's cheek, his knees giving way as his body slowly slumps
to the ground. Ashling, against her nature, cradled the boy's head in
her lap as Lucifer lay trying to catch his breath. Running her
fingers through Lucifer's chocolate locks, she couldn't deny the
feelings of guilt and remorse at seeing the boy suffering because of
her. Human's may be weak, but the genuine emotions they feel are what
attract her to them. It is, what some might call, a sympathy flaw.
“W-Was
it... that boy again, Mi' lady...?” Ashling's finger's froze
for a second, the soft voice seeming loud in the vast, quiet lounge.
Lucifer rarely asked questions concerning her visions. Lately,
however, after visions of a silver-haired youth now believed to be
Rido's pet, she had been on the verge of losing control over her
hunger, and it was taking it's toll on both her body and mind. If the
visions continued to this extent, there is a high possibility she
would end up killing Lucifer by bleeding him dry...
“You
needn't worry, Lu-Lu. You are relieved from your duties as of now.
Rest, my sweet. I am deeply sorry for my selfish actions,”
Ashling's voice had taken on a sweeter, smoother and more soothing
tone as she kissed the boy's forehead. A peaceful sigh was soon
followed by light breaths as he was lulled into slumber.
Humming an ancient lullaby to help the slumbering boy stay asleep,
Ashling's eyes flicked toward the closed door of the lounge. The
presence of another did not go unnoticed, as Ashling knew who would
be waiting to tend to the drained male in her arms.
Beyond the heavy lounge door, a female replica of the boy inside
slumped against the far wall, her gaze fixed on the ground. Unlike
her twin, her eyes were a lighter shade of green, almost aquamarine.
Unshed tears gave them a surreal yet sad gleam. Her ashen brown hair
was tied back with a decorative pin. Just on the other side of that
heavy plated door, her weakened brother's fatigued state was echoing
across their bond. Until the doors were opened by Ashling, she was
unable to be at her brother's side.

A/N: Well here it is. Not that exciting of an ending –
bit there are many ways this can go now. Many strings are left
untied. Feedback would be nice! Suggestions and requests are welcome!
